your workout forecast basically before 9:00. after that it really starts to heat up quickly and we'll see the temperatures at noon already in the 90s. here is a look at all of our highs today as we reach up to 102 degrees in anantioch. oakland, 86. 80 in san francisco. cooler weather in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? things are in flux. the map will show you that overall we have green sensors as you would happily expect. we are looking at slowing in the south bay as we zoom down to where it says san jose north 101 holding steady up to 880 where the slow zone is. we saw that kicking off over the last 20 minutes. meanwhile we'll get a look at the toll plaza. back over to you. mike, thank you. breaking overnight in the south bay a busy night for san jose

police investigating several crime scenes with the crimes all happening during the curfew hours. bay by's kris sanchez is live for us in downtown san jose to show us and talk about what happened early this morning. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus. activity that happened during what was supposed to be those quiet curfew hours overnight. let's start you off where we now know there was a fight inside the 7-eleven store just off campus before 1:00 this morning. san jose police now confirm what witnesses told us they saw which is that several people were stabbed. police found two men with stab wounds there at the scene near the convenience store. one of them died at the hospital, but police say two other men managed to get themselves to the hospital on their own. they have nonlife threatening stab wounds as well. homicide investigators are at the active scene. i am here at a different scene where san jose police are also

investigating the shooting of a suspect by at least one san jose police officer. this happened in the area of north 8th and east mission. there was a hit-and-run collision that was related. we will let you know more details as soon as we get them. look at what else is happening after the curfew order was in effect. all of these folks were not supposed to be out of their homes. the driver in that audi put on quite a sideshow as onlookers saw fireworks, people riding bicycles close to all of that action near the protest at san jose city hall. officers did arrest one driver and several other people. just a reminder san jose's curfew order remains in effect at least until sunday. can be called back earlier if need be. if the evening hours are anything like last night that's not going to happen. curfew is in effect from 8:30 at night until 5:00 in the morning.

you're not allowed to be outside of your homes unless you are an essential worker. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, kris. speaking of those curfews most of them have expired including all of contra costa and alameda counties as well as san jose and san francisco. sfpd took 20 people into custody for violating the curfew orders but protests were mostly peaceful. demonstrators in free throw month last night took a knee for nearly nine minutes of silence and solidarity with george floyd. in the amount of time police pinned him to the ground. they marched to city hall and then to the police station. in marin they sat on lawns and speakers addressed the crowd. in oakland, protests stayed mostly peaceful. police report no arrests or citations. some 300 people marched through downtown oakland. one organizer told us that he would like to see a lot come

from the protest. >> restart that. either get rid of them or you keep paying them but we're not going to pay them. we can police our own rally. >> the rally ended at 8:00 when the curfew kicked in and most of the crowds dispersed. >> organizers plan to gather out-of-a starbucks on blossom hill road and march to the library. on the pep ins la a demonstration outside of san mateo city hall that will get under way at 5:00 tonight. san francisco's district attorney is reportedly dropping charges against a black teenager after reviewing cell phone video of that arrest. many are comparing it to the knee tactic used on george floyd. "today in the bay's" jackie ward is with us with those developments.

>> reporter: in the video released you can see an officer kneeling on the back of a teenager's neck. we are about to play that video. this may be tough for some of you to watch. "the examiner" first reported the district attorney will not be pursuing those charges. back in january 19-year-old busby was accused of threatening his neighbor and resisting arrest. from this angle the video shot by a bystander with a cell phone it shows an officer doing what san francisco district attorney boudin said resembles what happened to george floyd. after personally reviewing the footage boudin is not pursuing the charges. yesterday he proposed a resolution urging the civil service commission to never again hire officers who have a history of excessive force, history of the officers in this case is unclear, but the knee is listed as one of many so-called personal body weapons listed in the sfpd use of force policy. >> our priority is not to find

temperatures reaching triple digits. it looks hot outside as we look at san francisco. happening today cooling centers across the bay area are opening up just in time for the warm weather. in the east bay you can head on over to the concord senior center to cool off. in santa clara county health leaders are using libraries like the one in saratoga. and in san jose five community centers opening including mayfair community center. all of the cooling centers will open at 1:00 p.m. to find a cooling center near you just head to nbcbayarea.com. certainly people are going to need a little bit of relief. you can already feel the warm morning out there. are we going to get any break at all? today will be really hot and tomorrow, too, but less intense. today is the peak of the heat. we have a heat advisory this morning that continues until this evening. and you want to make sure you're drinking lots of water, check in

on your friends and family and always look twice in the back seat. we're looking at temperatures this morning for some of us that are already starting out warm. 55 degrees in san jose. it's 58 degrees in livermore. this is our time to let the house cool down, open up the windows before the heat really starts to build because we may set some records today especially as we check out a record high in concord as well as oakland. in other spots we will be very close. i'll have more on this and we'll talk more about the weekend cooldown coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching the cameras for different reasons, watching the commute. it is building in patches. you see mostly green. the pattern you shouldn't be surprised. at the bottom of your map a little slowing, a little bit of yellow. speeds coming down towards 50 and 101 at 680 and 87, a little slowing just past downtown. more slowing for the nimitz, down through hayward out of san

whether we're talking credit cars or car loans or credit to retailers to buy inventory, credit really makes the economy hum and it is a bad sign when credit starts to move away. several banks saying they will no longer offer heloc. wall street seems to be sort of ahead of all of this. the markets rose yesterday. the dow industrials up better than 200 points. warner music starts its first day today. mark zuckerberg still dealing with an angry workforce. he held an all-hands audio meeting wednesday trying to explain why facebook allows president trump's post about shooting and looting when twitter does not. "the new york times" noted one employee asked, quote, why are

the smartest people in the world focused on contorting and twisting our policies to avoid antagonizing trump? zuckerberg called president trump to tell the president it was a harmful tweet but ultimately decided to leave it up on facebook. yesterday a number of facebook employees walked off the job again in a virtual walk-off because they're not in the offices because of the pandemic. speaking of the pandemic lots of graduations got canceled n. fact my youngest was supposed to have a commencement last weekend. so i had the idea to call one of the most prolific graduation speakers and he and i maybe could write a graduation speech together. steve is a longtime entrepreneur, a professor at stanford as well. we created the outline of a speech we would give to a virtual class of 2020. you can hear us craft it on sand

hill road. you won't hear the usual stuff like the potentials are boundless and the world is there for your taking because they are graduating into the worst economy in several generations which means the jobs aren't out there but there are opportunities to define yourself. with we graduated our parents said, go get a job. if you can't get a job, maybe you can do something for yourself and define who you are. >> that's what happens. you're told to go to college and then when you leave you get a job, but that's not necessarily the case right now. the creation of new companies, new inventions we could see. >> rye. >> that's a possibility. we've seen it before. >> and challenges, learning to overcome challenges and that growth. i think all of us have experienced that in one way or another and it's so important for us to never stop learning.

>> thanks, scott. >> we all need to be a little inspired. jay-z is using more than his music. he's pushing for justice. the rapper and his company taking out multiple full-page ads in newspapers across the country. the ads reading in dedication to george floyd with a #justiceforgeorgefloyd. it quotes dr. martin luther king jr.'s 1965 address in selma, alabama. the ads are signed by jay-z and the parents of sons who have died at the hands of police officers. quite moving. trending this morning a video of meghan markle is resurfacing where she is opening up about her experiences with racism. >> in 2012 markle was part of a video campaign for the nonprofit erase the hate. she actually talked about how she feels not being accepted as

a bi-racial woman. >> my life has felt like being a fly on the wall and some of the slurs i've heard, the really offensive jokes or the names. it just hit me in a really strong way. >> that video was actually shot -- >> before she had children. she also expressed hope that they would grow up in a society more open-minded to a mixed world, it's getting new traction in light of everything going on in the recent demonstrations we've seen. quite moving. >> i think this time is really revealing a lot, a lot of people are unaware how to start the conversation. trying to help out here at nbc bay area. we're going to have a conversation that will be thursday, tomorrow, at 6:30. jessica aguirre and i will lead the conversation and we'll have people within the community speaking about what we're going through right now, why are we

is starting to heat up. much cooler air will be coming in. jumping into the 90s by noon into the rest of the afternoon as we head to 96 degrees. some of the hottest spots for the inland east bay will reach up to 102, even 103 degrees. up to 99 in oakland, reaching 86 and san francisco reaching 80 degrees. we'll see a backing off tomorrow but along with that chance of rain we'll get some gusty winds and a strong ocean breeze that will keep our high temperatures in the 60s and 70s. as we talk about the storm system moving to the north of us, keeping an eye on the tropical system cristobal that

may develop over the next couple of days, move into the bay of campeche and closer to the gulf coast states. this is something we'll be watching the next few days, the possible development of a tropical system across the southeast. 90s tomorrow and then 70s for friday. this weekend is going to be so nice. watching the commute, how is it looking for drivers about to head out? the high temperatures, reports of a fire. we would see smoke drifting around as we faced down to story road. out to the maps you see that the traffic is loosening up. the arrow showed where it was slow.

talking about it. here it is and there the heat goes. again, it seems like every week we get these really big spikes and we get a live look outside in walnut creek. let's check out our temperature trend. it's going to be in the upper 60s to start. by noon, 90 degrees heading into the upper 90s today and a few of us will hit 100 degrees. more on this and a weekend cooldown coming up in a few minutes. lighter than yesterday and lighter than last week for sure. over to the bay bridge toll plaza where we do not have metering lights registered on as far as the chp report. a live look shows that folks are slowing on the approach to the toll plaza and you do see the fastrak lanes and a few lanes in front of that with slowing, the

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us in downtown san jose to get us up to speed. >> reporter: hi there, marcus, one of many active investigations going on with post curfew hours. start you off near san jose state university with what we know now is a deadly stabbing. it started with a fight inside that 7-eleven store right off campus. if you know san jose state, it

was 1:00 this morning. san jose police confirmed what witnesses told us they saw which was that several people were stabbed. police say two men got themselves to an area hospital with nonlife threatening injuries but two men were found stabbed there at the scene and one of them later died at the hospital. >> he wasn't even responding. he just looked like -- on his chest. >> reporter: san jose police are also investigating the shooting of a suspect by at least one sjpd officer north 8th and east mission. another hit-and-run incident nearby that police say is related to the suspect shot by police. we'll continue to ask for details in the case.

restrictions being lifted across contra costa county. welcome news to a lot of folks there. >> reporter: covid-19 cases and hospitalizations are no longer on the rise here in contra costa county and the city of walnut creek and all eight hospitals in the county have at least a 30-day supply of ppe. because of that health services is allowing other businesses to reopen starting today. take a look at your tv screen. a rundown. business offices, though the county is still urging you to telecommute if you can. outdoor services, services that don't require close customer contact. child care and cam ms for children with the understanding that kids must be in groups no larger than 12. curbside pickup at libraries. and protests up to 100 people will be included. we spoke with business owners but a number of shops are still

boarded up because of the george floyd protests. however, here is one resident. he has reservations about the next phase here in contra costa county. >> i think it's good. businesses have to restart some time. we're still in a pan defensemen ek and have barely gone through the phases. i don't want to go for money and get people sick. >> reporter: reopening soon here in the county, religious services can resume june 15th. the county is consulting with the state about reopening outdoor dining and swimming pools. 37 people in contra costa county have died from covid-19. a small percentage of the 1.15 million people who live here. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. 6:37 this morning. the pandemic has everyone hoping for a vaccine but some believe herd immunity may slow the spread of the virus.

dr. maldonado, epidemiologist with stanford university joins us live. thank you for joining thus morning, dr. maldonado. >> good morning. >> i know for a lot of people herd immunity, talk to us about what that is. >> well, herd immunity is people in a community who have already developed resistance to infection to keep it from spreading to other people who may not have immunity to that disease. it is like a buffer. >> have we seen that work in other infectious diseases? is that where we've seen it before? >> protection against disease and the way you can do that is by getting the disease, getting

sick or getting the vaccine. we don't have another way so we need to stay away from each other as long as the disease is in the community. >> we know herd immunity works but will it work with coronavirus. the theory about former w.h.o. officials that the virus could be seasonal and we could see a drop before we get a vaccine. what does that look like? >> it's hard to know. four of them are normal cold viruses and they do come every year and we don't build up long lasting immunity. reexposed and reinfected. >> a lot of unknowns with this virus.

areas it's going to stay fairly cool along the coast and spots like sausalito. you're still going to have milder weather as we take a live look out there this morning. and if you're going to be going out for a run today for some of our counties, our inland areas in the south county, low 60s to 96 degrees at 1:00. so running in the middle of the day not advised. temperatures reaching 100 degrees. it does cool off and, mike, you've been watching the morning commute. any update? the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are turned on. let's take a live look out there. the slow buildup is there. you will see more traffic buildup from where our cameras are all the way back to the 880 overcrossing and possibly back to the maze moving at speed

>> thanks so much, scott. 6:51 right now. taking a peek outside overlooking san jose, a clear start to our day. but, be warned, today should be the hottest day of the week in a lot of places in the bay area. some areas in the south bay, in fact, inland seeing temperatures in the triple digits. a little taste of summer although we're still in spring. we are and it will be a hot day. temperatures will ramp up quickly as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, nearing records in a few spots like concord where we may match the record of 102 degrees. we did set a record yesterday. we may do it again today and also in oakland it looks like we'll be above that record high of 85 degrees. we get a look at our microclimates and where we're headed today expect it to reach 99 degrees today in napa. oakland today once again into the upper 80s. san jose reaching 96 and 100

degrees in livermore today. this intense heat, the good news it doesn't last long. we're going to cool off as we go into the weeken o showers furthe north. yes, we're still tng month of j. and so we're going to see this coming in along with a couple of storms just to our north but we'll also see high pressure building next week. as we watch storms to the north there will be another storm we'll be watching across parts of the gulf and bay of campeche. this will be tropical storm cristobal that will drift over the gulf, and then we'll see where it goes. there's a possibility it could move into some gulf states going into next week. as we look at our temperatures we are once again here in the bay area going to deal with a really hot couple of days and then it comes down nicely for the weekend, but some gusty winds will start to pick up on friday and continue into saturday. how is it looking now for the commute, mike? kari, for this view of this

welcome back. 6:57. a look at our top stories, a busy night for san jose hoe lea police and what led up to a quadruple stabbing. there was a fight inside a 7-eleven. two men were taken to the hospital, one died. two other men drove themselves to the hospital. they're expected to be okay. homicide investigators are looking into what happened. a live look for you in downtown san jose. this is near the scene of an officer involved shooting. this happened near north 8 and east mission streets. and we can confirm that there was a hit-and-run nearby police say is related to the incident. so far they are not saying anything about the shooting or if anyone is in custody. caught on camera a sideshow right here in san jose. this is outside of city hall. it happened after the city's curfew went into effect. the driver and several others were arrested.
