5:00 am
area but none close enough to the fire to be at risk. we know, though, because of our spike in temperatures and we know because we didn't get as much rain as anticipated that we expect it could be a very busy fire season. let's go to vianey arana to talk about that now. good morning, kris. you are right, we had the heat advisory yesterday and we talked triple-digit heat. right now i think the thing that could be more favorable for the fire is the slightly cooler temperatures, and humidity is at 39%, and also as chris mentioned, we are not seeing any wind, which is what we like to see because the wind can spread fires. the temperature trend shows we will warm up quickly. we will be about 90 degrees by noon. how are the wind speeds doing? again, not windy out there,
5:01 am
fairly calm and in the evergreen area about 4 miles per hour. i will fast-forward the timeline. the winds don't pick up for the afternoon but will pick up this weekend. this weekend we are tracking a cooldown, so i will have another update on that and what we can expect coming up shortly. back to you. >> thank you very much. in the meantime in solano county, firefighters are battling a fire that started yesterday afternoon near a neighborhood off of cordelia street, and nearby houses are still being evacuated this morning. right now we want to get a look at that traffic this morning. it's going to be one of those days, mike. i know it's not what we are used to seeing at this time but certainly more traffic on the roads right now. >> yeah, we are starting to see that build but right now under
5:02 am
the curfew, traffic dropped off from last week. at the top of the screen, we circled the area south of highway 12 and that's what laura was talking about, and highway 12 is still okay, and it's a 300-acre fire in the north bay. then at the bottom of the screen above the time and temperature, we have the other fire kris is talking about, the silver creek valley ride between silver creek valley road and valley felipe road. we will continue to track both of those fires, but the freeways at least are moving smooth. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:on5:02 right now. we'll take you live to washington now and that's where we find "today in the bay"'s
5:03 am
tracy spo tracie potts this morning. business owners need this flexibility. >> right, because they have the availability of the money, at least many of them did but paying back the money and how they use the money was the issue here. some changes have been made passed unanimously or by unanimous consent and is on its way to the president's desk. it gives them longer to spend the money, 24 weeks instead of 8, and allows them to use more of the money to pay their bills, rent and utilities as opposed to having to use the bulk of it to pay payroll, and so it's a different split. it extends the deadline to rehire people to coincide with
5:04 am
the ending extended unemployment insurance. lots of big businesses that have smaller individual locations were able to get that money and that, lawmakers said, was not the idea. this time small businesses still do have to apply by the end of this month, by june 30th to get those loans. laura. >> so many small business owners i know have been desperately waiting for these changes, so we will wait for the president's signature on it. thank you. and many bay area cities are facing a lot of challenges when it comes to reopening for business, and some of it involves the vandalism and looting, but in san francisco many laid off workers are wondering if they get their jobs back. jackie ward is live.
5:05 am
>> reporter: as restrictions start easing across the bay area, many businesses say it's hard to reopen. a legislation that the supervisor raised, the city's small business commission says it's not possible, and plus as counties are talking about continuing to ease restrictions, health experts are warning of what they are calling a tsunami wave of coronavirus later this year. >> and we may experience several mohs hammered hard by another wave in late summer early fall. that will not reflect that we did the wrong thing in locking down, but it would show the fact
5:06 am
that we are ill prepared for what is coming. >> reporter: most businesses will continue to stay closed because of the looting. according to a new poll from the public policy of california, 3 in 10 people believe decreasing restrictions on physical activity is the right move, and 46% said they want the same amount of restrictions, and 25% said they want more, and just 28% want fewer restrictions. meanwhile, the supervisor is expected to take up that proposal in a committee hearing next week. santa clara county leaders are getting contract tracing up and running.
5:07 am
they are seeking volunteers. today's hearing will be focusing on the recruitment and training. another busy day and night of bay area protests, as you can see in cities like san francisco, oakland, san mateo and hayward. people took to the streets. at one point an estimated 30,000 people gathered in san francisco. while many defied curfew orders pretty much everywhere, things remained peaceful. overnigh overnight curfews lifting at this hour, and the restrictions are not expected back tonight, but some curfews are remaining in place for now. sthaoeufp here's new video of last night in vallejo of national guard trips protecting police department headquarters.
5:08 am
earlier yesterday tensions flared in vallejo. activist are angered over vallejo police shooting and killing a san francisco man, a 22-year-old. he was a looting suspect and investigators say the hammer in his pocket was what they thought was a gun. doctors at the highland hospital plan to demonstrate out front against racism and police brutality. that is getting under way at 8:15 this morning. we would like to invite you to join us tonight for a special "race in america: the conversation."
5:09 am
we are taking an hour to explain the divide and why are we here now. join us tonight at 6:30 because we will open that conversation, and hopefully it will be a continued conversation, because it's one that so many people have been scared to have and so many wanting to have, but if we start the conversation it can open the door to understanding and hopefully solving some of the problems that we face every day. >> right, i am looking forward to that, marcus. 6:30, right? >> 6:30 tonight. don't miss it. >> perfect. it's not even 6:30 in the morning right now, and vianey you are in for kari this morning, and you can feel it's cooler than yesterday morning. >> yeah, we are running about five degrees cooler in san jose, and four degrees cooler in san carlos. this is going to set us up for a bigger cooldown this weekend.
5:10 am
today we will still see 90s out there. 63 degrees in san jose right now. 59 in oakland. it will feel muggy, because we need more moisture strolling in. we're not expected to see as many triple digits. currently we are in the 60s, but we will warm up rather quickly in the 90s, and still talking about upper 90s. believe it or not, all these 80s or 90s we are seeing now are going to cool down into the 70s. by as much as 20, 25 degrees compared to what we have been seeing these last few days, and i am tracking our next chance of rain and i will give you more details on that coming up in the forecast in just a little bit. >> vianey, we could use that rain, as they say. i will shout out the two fires we are talking about, because
5:11 am
they could be visible from the freeway, and we could see smoke in the south bay as well. we are looking at the fire north of 101, and it may be visible at times and we are not looking at any slowing for the distractions. in the tri-valley, west 205 still slow. that is one factor as well. a live look out there shows you oakland, 880 coming past the coliseum with no problems. i am shouting out ac transit when we come back. back to you. shaken up in southern california. 5:25 on "today in the bay," the sudden quake that took council members by surprise, and the major shaker scientists are linking it to. we get the latest jobs data today, and when you are ready to
5:12 am
go back to the movie theaters, will the movie theaters still be there. >> i don't think the people posting all lives matter should be canceled, i think they should be educated. >> and seth rogen and ashton kutcher speaking up about the all lives matter debate. look here, it's your very own all-in-one
5:13 am
to watch live tv entertainment experience, xfinity x1.it'y and now x1 also comes with peacock. ooh la la. this rare bird lets you stream tons of movies, shows, news, sports and more. with x1, it's all at your beck and call. show me "parks and rec." see? the best really did get better! magnificent. xfinity x1 just got even better with peacock premium included for no additional cost. no strings attached.
5:14 am
5:15 am
5:14 for you this morning. welcome back. we're staying on top of that breaking news for you this morning, out of the south bay, a five-acre fire burning in the east part of san jose. it's near heartland road. firefighters are on the scene there. no homes are threatened at this point. the wind gusts there very low so wind is not fighting against this fire right now. of course we have a live reporter there at the scene, kris sanchez will have more for us in a little more than 15 minutes. you're right, marcus, the wind speeds right now are calm, which is great when it comes to stopping the possibility of this spreading quickly, so current temperatures in the 60s and 50s as we wake up this morning. i'll talk about our next chance of seeing rain and when the winds will pick up this coming weekend, coming up.
5:16 am
and then looking at the camera over in dublin, the headlights are headed westbound. ac transit continues to stop their service at 7:30 because of the curfew activities. good morning. very happy thursday to you. we get jobless claims data on thursday, as you well know, and i hate to say good news because it's bad news when a single person loses their job, but i think we are trending towards good news. we have seen that over the last couple of weeks. claims are falling and hundreds of people are now saying they can leave the unemployment roles because they have gotten a job or returned to the old one. we get that data in about 15 minutes. stock market on an absolute tear. the nasdaq is 2% under it's all-time high, despite a pandemic and protest.
5:17 am
the s&p had its biggest move over the last several days in its history. president trump is tweeting, look at the stock market now. i said over the years, the stock market is not the stock market and the stock market is not the economy. economic numbers are things we use like monthly jobs reports and consumer prices, those sorts of things, durable goods. that's the economy and that's how we measure that. sometimes wall street does its own thing regardless of the economy, but overall we are seeing good news. yesterday the department of transportation said it would forbid chinese airliners from landing in america because china had not allowed our airlines to land there. it looks as if they are backing away. there are four different
5:18 am
airlines that america said cannot land in america as of mid june. listed here, it looks like that has solved itself and things will get back to normal. originally the problem was the pandemic, and that's why the flights were cut off and now it looks they are coming back to normal. amc is saying there's substantial doubt they will reopen when allowed to reopen. when people are allowed to go back to the theaters it looks as if the theaters are not expecting many people, and i will be honest with you, i am not sure i would be one of them, but that creates the vicious circle, because studios are saying we may hold off on the big blockbusters if nobody is going to go to the theater, but nobody is going to go to the theater because there's no good movies. >> a lot of movies have been released online, and i don't know how that is going to work
5:19 am
with the big movies plans. >> the theater and owners are very angry about it, yeah. >> no surprise there. it's 5:18. new this morning, twitter's ceo, jack dorsey, is donating $3 million to kaepernick's know your rights camp. in the meantime, seattle seahawks coach, pete carroll, says, quote, we owe a tremendous amount to kaepernick for taking a stand in 2016. he talked about it during his podcast. kaepernick did not play again after taking a knee. and then the phrase black
5:20 am
lives matter, some are relating that to the black lives matter protests. >> when ashton kutcher said this. >> so for us, black lives matter. so while you may have the best intentions in saying all lives matter, remember for some people black lives don't matter at all. >> actor seth rogen fired back on all lives matter commenters saying, you don't deserve my movies anymore. >> very powerful when you see
5:21 am
people start talking, and it is powerful when it comes from a white man making that comment. >> yeah, and he was emotional about it, too, and we're raising the next generation, and we have to break the racial divide we are going through. you have more tonight on that conversation at 6:30. >> yeah, as uncomfortable as it can be, we will talk about it here on nbc bay area at 6:30, and we will kick off the conversation with leaders in the community and young people doing things right now, so tune in if you want to have that conversation, and if don't i think you should because it opens the door to understanding. >> all right. there we go. we have to move on to the day as well, and the sun coming up and mike has a look at the commute. >> predawn commute is pretty
5:22 am
common, and marcus, i am looking forward to the conversation tonight, and everybody should check it out. there's no major problems on the freeways, but we want to talk about what is just off the freeway. in the south bay i have an icon off to the shoulder where you see the exclamation point, and that's where there's a fire, and kris sanchez continues to follow that. slowing is steady out of the altamont pass, highway 84 into pleasanton, there's more focus on that area, and there's a build there, and we have slowing for 880 that started a little earlier than the last few days, but so far looking steady through contra costa county.
5:23 am
and then service had been suspended because of the curfew but not any moorre. back to you. and then in the south bay, 92 degrees for san jose. 96 in morgan hill. we will remain fairly warm, and areas like concord will be in the upper 90s, and oakland 80 degrees, and hayward 84. up to the peninsula, 86 degrees for redwood city. and in the city it will be cooler but fairly mild and warmer in the afternoon. 90 degrees in santa rosa. 89 in sonoma. all of this setting us up for slightly cooler weather heading into the weekend, because we have two systems turning just off the coast and this will bring our first chance of seeing
5:24 am
rain again make its return, and we start the cooldown and expect it through saturday and sunday and that will bring in breezy conditions as well and cooler temperatures expected not just inland areas but also through san francisco, and we have 70s and 60s ahead. back to you. next on "today in the bay," the brewing legal battle now set to play out in los angeles with the ongoing curfews meant to reign in protesters. and we know you are having to do this virtual graduation -- >> a great grad surprise for you. the 2020 california class just got an epic message from keanu reeves and alex, otherwise known as bill and ted.
5:25 am
5:26 am
5:27 am
welcome back. 5:27 for you this mor eric gais the curfews.

developing now, monitored an earthquake last night, and it was about 100 miles east of bakersfield. it was a 5.5 earthquake and hit about 6:30 and was felt as far away as hollywood and las vegas. it was likely an aftershock to the quake in that same area last july. i am kris sanchez in san jose's evergreen neighborhood. you can see the smoke billowing above the hillside, and we now know how many acres are affected. more on that coming up.

5:31 am
right now at 5:30, breaking news. a brushfire burning in the south bay evergreen foothills. very concerning with the dry conditions we have been having. thank you for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we want to get straight to kris sanchez who is live out in san jose with the latest on this fire. kris, have they started to attack this fire at all? >> reporter: well, absolutely.
5:32 am
you saw that glowing line of fire in the nighttime overnight hours, and now the sun is up and what we are seeing is the smoke. you are asking, marcus, if they are fighting the fire, and the answer is yes. we are here with some of the rigs at the base point of the entry point, but we have seen rigs going up the hillside on a dirt road, and crews are here from san jose fire and cal fire. at this point we know 20 acres are burned but the firefighting spokesperson said there's a potential for about 100 acres to burn, so that's a lot more. the good news is it's burning up a hillside that are uninhibited, and there are homes in this area but they seem to be safe. the wind picked up just a little bit before it was absolutely still but now we are feeling a little breeze now that the sun is coming up.
5:33 am
vianey has been tracking the forecast, and it's a forecast where we believe it will be a busy fire season. as you know we had triple digits yesterday and the heat advisory has expired, and with the heat we also look at the humidity and the wind factor. we are comfortable in the 60s now, but we roll up into the 80s factor, it's calm and ther we are seeing between 6 and 10 miles per hour winds, so not as breezy, but however long this takes to tackle, we are seeing the wind increase head into tomorrow afternoon, as we get a change in the forecast, and look what happens to the wind speeds there. we go upwards of 25 miles per
5:34 am
hour. we will monitor that very closely, because as chris mentioned there's always that concern asprpespecially heading fire season. i will be in the south bay as well with a live look at 101 northbound. the volume is building as we expected, right about now, and our live camera shows no crash, just slowing northbound 101, slowing, yes, but no crash at the scene. the focus of the slowing is right here, and exclamation point is in the hills where kris sanchez is reporting on the fire in the east bay. a disabled vehicle reported, and we will check on that as well. back to you. new video this morning going viral showing san jose police officers chasing down a
5:35 am
protester and seemingly hitting him with a motorcycle. the video was posted to twit ju -- twitter and already has a lot of views. san jose police along with the mayor are planning to speak about the protests today at 1:00 p.m. another day of protests planned for today after large crowds gathered in san francisco and oakland, and in some places even past curfew. bob redell joins us outside of the police department where more protests are planned for there today. >> reporter: good morning. ideally the protests planned later today outside the free mopp fremont police department is going to be just as peaceful as yesterday. thousands of people marched
5:36 am
through downtown san francisco, and you should be able to see that video on your tv screen right now, and you will see that scene near broadway and 14th, and there was a peaceful protest for george floyd. after this weekend's violence and vandalism, there was a curfew and they allowed them to break the curfew as long as they wereonviolent. >> i got here and i feel like breathing for taylor or floyd, and -- >> we all need to stand up for each other. we have a right to be here to speak, so we have to do that, we should be here.
5:37 am
>> i also want to direct your attention to this. this was in front of oakland city hall around 10:00 p.m. last night, and the protests turned into sort of a dance party, you can see a number of people, look at it, they are doing the electric slide. and there was only one arrest, no citations and no reports of violence, looting or physical damage, and back out here live, today's protest here at fremont headquarters behind me. students from the south bay plan to gather at a wells fargo to protest at 5:00 tonight. protests continued late into the night in santa cruz. vandals were also at work, targeting those businesses.
5:38 am
some targeting the bank of the west, and tagging those areas including the police station with a lot of graffiti, much of it too offensive to show on tv. so far no word of any arrests. new details this morning. the atf announcing a $10,000 reward to track down looters that targeted a gun store late sunday night. up to 40 people broke into richardson tactical, and 29 firearms were stolen. if you have any information, contact atf. so much going on right now, ask we want to invite you to a conversation we are having on nbc bay area where we are holding a special, race in america: the conversation. we are going to talk about the injustice and inequities, tough conversations, and hopefully
5:39 am
endsing wi ending with understanding and what is going on. make sure you dvr it if it's past your bedtime. >> i am staying up for that. >> there you go. we don't have to have all the answers, but as long as we are talking about it. >> we're not going to promise you a solution at the end, oh, like we have that plan, but it's to start the cover saenversatio because we're not having the conversation right now. >> but it leads to solutions, and that's what we are looking for. we are also looking forward to a nice day ahead. a little cooler, right, vianey? >> just a little bit. i wish i could say we're going to see the 70s, but we have to wait for the weekend for that. 63 degrees right now in san
5:40 am
jose. 59 in oakland. 58 in livermore. i want to show you the 24-hour temperature change to give you an idea of how much we cooled down compared to the last 24 hours. san jose five degrees, and oakland, five degrees. what are we expecting for today? well, a lot less triple digits but we will be in the upper 90s in the interior valleys. san jose, 92. and then we're going to cool down by as much as 20 to 25 degrees into the weekend, plus we are talking about rain chances. i will get you more details on that, but first let's check in with mike. >> wow, rain. that's a change. not a big change on the roadways, and in fact some of the slowing showed up early, guys. as we look at the maps, we have no problems with the freeway speeds. there's a crash near santa clara street and allen rock, causing some slowing and that's about
5:41 am
it. we have a fire around the silver creek area, and kris sanchez is following that in the hills above the area. we are holding steady, and maybe lighter for 84, the slowing there out of altamont. the east bay approaching the bridge is just fine. it's a good flow of traffic, and we may see the metering lights. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. something good for you this morning from a dynamic cometic duo. during the virtual graduation for seniors, they got a special message from honorary students. >> that's right. keanu reeves and alex winter, you remember them from "bill and
5:42 am
ted's excellent adventures," and they attended the same school in the movie. >> we wanted to tell you to be excellent to each other. >> and pardon the yawn. >> they slowed their tune there a little bit, but the actors wished the students good luck in all their future endeavors. still ahead on "today in the bay," the latest on the new charges filed against police officers involved in george floyd's death and the public memorials planned for today. we will have it all in a live report from minneapolis. president trump facing severe, and i mean severe criticism from his former defense secretary. i will tell you all about it. spreading the message off the court. the warriors' stars that took to the streets in protest. more ahead. plus, touching moments of
5:43 am
university. the messages and other signs of hope showing up across the bay area amid the rising tensions. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:44 am
5:45 am
good morning. we are seeing some fog rolling in through san francisco. a live look and there you can see it creeping on it. we are seeing cooler temperatures today and what we can expect heading into sunday when our next chance of rain rolls in coming up. that's a cool shot there.
5:46 am
the san mateo bridge, traffic flowing across without any problems, and we have a good volume of traffic there heading westbound away from us, and a smooth drive getting to the area, a little slow on the approach and we will talk about the build we see over by the bay bridge coming up. after days of protests in minnesota where the handcuffed george floyd died at the hands of the police, and the city today will take pause, and thousands will gather today at the first of several memorials. jay gray is in minneapolis where today's service is being planned. good morning, jay. >> reporter: good morning, laura. in preparations for that service under way, obviously. you can see the worship center behind me on the campus, and that's where floyd's family and loved ones will be there just across the street, and that's
5:47 am
where thousands will gather to pay their respect as the service is broadcast to them. this all coming, of course, after three more minneapolis police officers now have been charged in floyd's death. across the country overnight, thousands of protesters began spilling into the streets like they have ever night since george floyd's death. responding to the calls for justice. >> we are here because george floyd is not here. >> minnesota's attorney general announced charges against the otherffers that helped hold floyd down. >> and the charge on chauvin moved up to second-degree
5:48 am
murder. but this is not the end of their fight. >> i won't be satisfied until i can wake up and have kids and have them not fear their lives just for being black, for being darker than other people. it's not enough. i can say it's not enough. it's not enough. it's not enough until everything changes. >> changes family members are calling for as they join supporters for the memorial later today. >> we deserve justice. >> justice so many are demanding. across the country right now. now there will be another memorial this weekend in north carolina where floyd was born and then on monday a public viewing followed by tuesday, a private funeral. those in houston where floyd
5:49 am
grew up and spent several years before moving here to minneapolis. >> yeah, a painful time for his family, no doubt. jay gray, thank you very much. as the nation remembers floyd, lester holt reports live from minneapolis this eve tphpbg for an nbc news primetime special. you can watch "america in crisis" tonight at 7:00 right here on nbc bay area. breaking right now for you, the latest weekly jobless numbers, just under $2 million unemployment claims, and it's the lowest weekly total since the pandemic took hold, and this is the ninth straight week of declines as businesses reopen. the unemployment rate is expected to rise to 19%.
5:50 am
and then scott mcgrew, this is the old one. >> yeah, and many people disagree, but for the president's own secretary of defense to speak out is incredibly unusual. >> the option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should be only used as a last resort and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. we are not in one of those situations now. i do not support invoking the insurrection act. >> the white house press secretary said for now secretary
5:51 am
esper is still secretary esper. he was asked about his presence to the controversial walk over to the church across from the white house, and protesters were cleared from the park to make that walk possible. he was under the impression he and the president were going to inspect damaged park rest rooms. the bigger damage was done to the president from president trump's first defense secretary. he writes donald trump is the first president in my lifetime to even pretend to try to unite, instead he divides us. we are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. president trump responded on twitter saying that he had fired mattis ande had givens are
5:52 am
true, mattis resigned after president trump said he wanted to remove troops from syria and mattis disagreed. and then rosenstein said if he knew then how poorly justified the request to wiretap the trump campaign was he would not have signed it. >> if you knew then what you know now, would you have signed the warrant application? >> no, i would not. >> there's lot going on in washington, and there always is, and you can follow me on twitter, i'm @scottmcgrew. warriors head coach steve kerr is talking about the death
5:53 am
of george floyd and all the protests that happened since and he wants to talk about change. >> yeah, he took on many questions on his podcast with pete carroll. he said white people need to know the legacy before any changes can come to pass. >> what has to be done before anything is an understanding and awareness that there needs to be a reconciliation and admission of guilt. >> and warriors players are klay thompson and steph curry and his wife both raised their hands and joined the crowd by chanting, hands up don't shoot. buildings in san francisco lit up with hearts last night. take a look at that. meanwhile ucsf workers on the
5:54 am
front lines of the pandemic took time out of their day to kneel for nine minutes, the amount of time the police officer pinned george floyd to the ground with his knee. >> nice to see. >> it really is. all right. it's 5:54 for you this morning, and taking a look at what you can expect from the weather today, i don't know if we can say a cooldown, but definitely cooler temperatures, vianey. >> yeah, just a little bit. we are still going to be in the 90s and right now we are in the 50s and 60s. we are seeing an onshore flow that cooled us down and a lot less triple digits. 99 in antioch. and 92 in san jose. 88 in palo alto. depending on where you live, you could get a better chance of experimenting with mother nature's ac along the coast.
5:55 am
the high pressure system starts to continue its trek inland and then we have two systems interacting off the pacific, one to the north and one to the south, and this will bring a colder air mass that will drop us down by 20, 25 degrees in some spots, and also going to see a chance of isolated rain heading into sundays. now looking forward, one system makes its exit into sunday and monday, and by tuesday we get high pressure that rolls back around and then we see the return of hotter temperatures. overall, current wind speeds are breezy and light. we see the wind peick up and getting gustier. over the next seven days, we have a stretch of 90s and then look at that, 79 and then 75. mike? >> i love the breeze bringing in the weekend. that's the way it works, right? we're looking over to the camera
5:56 am
in san jose, and it shows traffic breaking apart. from time to time we see more brake tapping and that should start to clear up. the live camera shows you right at the moment the traffic easing up. we will look at the map where we have the crash that was just north of our camera that cleared from the roadway as well. lighter traffic flow throughout the south bay is flowing nicely and the rest of the bay shows a nice easy flow of traffic, and we don't have any problems getting over towards the bay bridge right now. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, las vegas resorts are reopening today. gamblers and guests will get a chance to see as they head back to the las vegas strip. on the casino flow, there are only three seats per table and masks are not needed if just
5:57 am
walking through, but they are needed if gambling at a table. and breaking news we are covering overnight, a fire in the foothills, and it's growing to about 20 acres and has the potential to reach as least 100. we will take you there with a live look and show you if there's anything threatened. there's a lot more ahead. you're watching "today in the bay."
