against two retired marine generals this morning. they were his chief of staff and his defense secretary, but he had nothing but praise for him at the time, that has very much changed. mattis delivered a dire warning, warning the president was trying to divide us, says we must reject those who make a mockery of our constitution as we sit through three years without mature leadership. a very angry president trump responded by reminding everyone he had fired mattis. mattis resigned. that's when the next marine general gets into the fray. general john kelly who was trump's chief of staff at the time told "the washington post," no, mattis resigned, wasn't fired. the president clearly has forgotten how that happened or is confused. the president traveling to maine. he will have a press conference about the astonishingly great numbers coming out of the labor

garcia held a joint news conference yesterday. i know you were there standing behind him. i want to play a little bit of what chief garcia had to say. >> your officers' actions have saved lives, property and ensured that peaceful demonstrations were able to condition here in san jose. your love for this community is unmatched. the support for the difficult job that they do. >> so very tough situation for officers. protesters at times feeling attacked as they had to deploy some tear gas. do you feel officers have acted appropriately given the situation they were dealing with and should there be any standards? there's been talk of that, something that should be standards of what they're able to use. >> there are standards. that's for us to be transparent with the public about what those standards are and whether we've complied with them or haven't.

that's part of what we will have in the days and weeks ahead because it is important for us to hold everyone accountable. i was able to observe for several hours a standoff on friday and saturday as well. what i saw was an overwhelming majority expressing first amendment rights but there were a few folks in the crowd throwing the rocks, throwing the bottles, throwing punches. really difficult position there. they have to be, unfortunately, when you're facing that many people with an unknown set of sources of all those projectiles including fireworks, by the way, thrown at him, detonated, they have to have riot gear on. and that sets up a very basic tension. we have to grapple with the

reality that both sides are right. that is peaceful protesters felt daunted and intimidated at the same time that police officers want to go home that night safely to their families and make sure all the protesters are safe as well. >> understandably there's got to be that balance there as well. the curfew has been lifted. i understand you are able if need be and if it's lifted and seeing some of the restrictions lifted as well which could help local businesses. i understand some are actually afraid of hat balance because you kind of -- not kind of, we need the economy to get back up and rolling especially for san jose, the biggest city in the bay area. >> i'm confident the protests aren't going to cause any problems with businesses. the problems are going to come

from those folks who are prov e provoking police, throwing bottles. and vandalism and so forth. that's where we're focused. the last couple days have been peaceful. we haven't had any arrests. we hope that will continue. >> okay. let's get up and moving again. i also want to take note because earlier this week you, with other city leaders, took a stand of solidarity in dealing with george floyd and everything. why was that important for you to do? >> i think we have to acknowledge that we hear throughout the country is righteous.

all of our institutions and, yes, where we see it, unfortunately, on the nightly news is in police departments and we need to be direct about confronting that racism. doing everything to change our institutions and police departments are among them. i'm blessed that we have a chief in eddie garcia that's really committed to continue out improvement and every office has de-escalation training and is being held accountable. we know there's a lot floating around and social media. the investigation will be independently reviewed and there's going to be punishment where officers stepped over the line. >> all right, obviously looking in it all. mayor sam liccardo, thank you for joining us this morning. >> laura, can i give a free plug? we have an al fresco starting today and will bring our
