7:00 pm
right now at 7:00, breaking news just south of the bay area. at least one deputy is dead. there's a massive police presence there right now. we're live with the very latest. but first, multiple fires sparking across the bay area. strong winds, dry conditions making it a challenge for firefighters. the news starts right now. good evening everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. we start with breaking news in solano county where a fire is threatening homes and buildings. it's the quail fire. it's burning north of vacaville, southwest of winters. it broke out near the intersection of quail canyon road and pleasant valley road
7:01 pm
about 4:30. evacuations are in progress. cal fire says the flames are moving at a dangerous rate of speed. at least 150 acres have already burned. we're also tracking another fire, this one near concord. nbc area's sergio quintana live on the ground there. sergio, what can you tell us? >> reporter: i can tell you this is a fire that started a couple of hours ago. as you mentioned a little bit earlier, the winds out here are really the challenge to firefighters on this and on the other fire that you mentioned. this is a fire that happened in some pretty wide open space at the former naval weapons station here in concord. at the moment, it does look like it has been knocked down pretty much. let's go ahead and go to some video a little earlier. the wind out here was really fanning these flames. this fire quickly grew to about 75 acres. there were multiple fire crews out here, including a couple of helicopters that helped to try to control the lines here.
7:02 pm
but we have noticed that in the last five to ten minutes, fire crews have started to try to wrap up here a little bit. it seems that some of the fire basically just ran out of fuel, and so they have been able to get a bit of a handle on this fire at this point. haven't gotten the latest assessment as to the acreage just yet. at last assessment by fire crews probably about half an hour ago, this was about 75 acres. and you can see now that there are still a couple of other units that are in that field. reporting live in concord, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. let's take you out live now to fremont where you can see that flag waving in the wind, and wind has been the problem for the two fires we were just talking about. rob mayeda joining us now talking about the wind into the night. >> yeah. you know, wind is really the big player in terms of the fires both burning up towards near the concord area, also southwest of
7:03 pm
winters into solano county. and the third fire, which was the gulch fire out towards sonoma county too, we've seen these wind gusts. 26 to 33 miles per hour. even though the temperatures or humidity doesn't seem too bad with our temperatures in the 60s, it's the wind speeds that are really the driving factor here. north bay, inland contra costa county seeing abnormally dry conditions to start off the month of june. we did not have anything like this last year, where we saw no drought conditions across the bay area. this year off to an extremely dry start. when the winds pick up, you're seeing more grass and wildfires. as sergio pointed out, contra costa county up towards the north bay, the areas in red, you're seeing some of the strongest wind gusts right now. we think they'll peak between 7:00 and 9:00 this evening. gusts up to 45 miles per hour possible between now and 11:00 tonight. we'll talk about more wind for
7:04 pm
sunday, sierra snow, and a chance of showers for parts of northern california. all of that coming up in about ten minutes. rob was just talking about it. an update on that fire in sonoma county. cal fire tweeted the wildfire has burned about 100 acres. forward progress has been stopped. the wildfire broke out near stage gulch road south of petaluma. crews still on the scene. rob's keeping you updated. he's keeping us all updated. follow him on twitter for the latest information. his handle is @rob mayeda. breaking news out of santa cruz county. a shooting in ben lomond that involved deputies. we have now learned from multiple sources that a deputy has been shot and killed in the line of duty. ginger joins us live with more. >> reporter: terry, as you just mentioned, officials have confirmed that one santa cruz county sheriff's deputy has been
7:05 pm
killed and another has been injured after a shooting here in ben lomond. the scene is still active. as you can see, the road right next to me, which is highway 9, is still blocked off to traffic, even residents in the area who have been waiting for hours not allowed to return to their homes, indicating how active of a scene it still is here. it's also unclear how everything began. but i did speak to a resident who shared there was a carjacking involving a man with a rifle. the same resident shared he heard what sounded like civilian voices aiding in the suspect's arrest. we're not sure if the carjacking was the beginning of everything or if that was at some point involved in what was happening up there. but the same resident, you know, did share his experience. the sheriff's office has confirmed they have at least one suspect in custody. that happened around 3:40 this afternoon. throughout the day we've seen streams of law enforcement authorities from all across the
7:06 pm
bay area respond to the active threat here. just moments ago we've also just checked the facebook page of santa cruz county sheriff's office, and they did say they will be holding a press conference at 8:30 this evening. that will be broadcast live on their facebook page and more details with this active scene. that's the latest that we've got here. terry, back to you. >> ginger, thank you very much. well, an incredible turnout in san francisco. people marched across the golden gate bridge in support of black lives matter. at one point some of the crowd left the sidewalks briefly and took to the roadway. nbc bay area's christie smith has this report from san francisco. >> black lives matter! >> reporter: people lined up far and wide just to get to the march across the golden gate bridge. darryl ewing came in from oakland. he thinks the death of george floyd is a tipping point. >> i think that's hit every soul, everybody in this country here. they're saying that this is a
7:07 pm
human being, and you can't just keep doing this to african-americans. >> reporter: demonstrators carried signs in support of black lives matter as they continued their fight against racism and violence by police. 17-year-old tiana day helped lead the march and addressed demonstrators before they started. one of a growing number of young activists stepping up in their community. >> we're all sitting here fighting for quality, and it's an important time that we all come together, especially with the youth. >> we have to exercise our freedom of speech. it's all we have. >> reporter: it was a diverse group, families too. people wore masks but space was hard to find. drivers honked in support as they passed, and some cars had signs posted too. >> it was amazing. i am just beyond full that this many people came out here. >> reporter: at one point, some people moved from the sidewalk to roadway, briefly blocking lanes. some who took part say showing up to be seen and heard at the bridge needed to happen. >> it's gone on too long. this nation is broken, and it's
7:08 pm
time to make change. that's why i'm here, and i'm going to keep marching at every protest until it happens. >> reporter: in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. similar protests held in cities across the country, even around the world. here are a few of them. demonstrators filling the streets in washington, d.c., philadelphia, london, and sydney, australia. the body of george floyd arrived in his hometown in north carolina today. a memorial service was held there for mr. floyd. thousands of people showed up for the public viewing. his family also held a private service. today was the second memorial service for mr. floyd. the first was held in minneapolis last thursday. his body will be buried tuesday in houston, texas. protesters also taking to the streets of berkeley today where the messages are very similar. black lives matter and equality is a right needed right now. nbc bay area's thom jensen live at civic center park where a new orleans-type funeral procession
7:09 pm
ended a couple hours ago. >> reporter: the speakers just stopped speaking. this went on for quite a while here at civic center park. them all saying that they need systemic changes. they were calling for the abolishment of police. the one message we heard over and over and we continue to hear -- black lives matter. funeral procession on the streets of berkeley. thousands of people in a symbolic walk with community leaders that started at malcolm x elementary school. >> there's an incredible amount of people here who want change, and so why not fight for it? >> reporter: a march down martin luther king jr. way in honor of george floyd. carrying a casket, a call to bury racism forever. >> today we say no more. the killing of george floyd has unleashed the intensity of righteous anger. >> reporter: hundreds of people also packed into civic center park earlier in the afternoon, where speakers vowed to continue
7:10 pm
protesting. >> we need policies in place that hold police accountable for their actions. [ applause ] >> reporter: and a powerful and lengthy moment in memory of george floyd at the steps of berkeley p.d. as protesters sat in silence for eight minutes and 46 seconds, the same amount of time a uniformed minneapolis police officer held his knee on george floyd's neck. demonstrations here in berkeley continue through tuesday, including a candlelight vigil for george floyd tomorrow here in berkeley at the b.a.r.t. station. we're live in berkeley. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. the protests against systemic racism in the u.s. continued across the bay area. this one's in concord. you can see people gathering at the todo santos plaza right there. hundreds of people also gathered at a black lives matter rally and march at king plaza.

mayor adrian fine tweets these photos this afternoon from palo alto along with the caption, you make me so proud, palo alto. a man arrested in maryland after an altercation over social justice fliers has been fired from a pleasanton company. 60-year-old anthony brennan iii is facing three counts of second degree assault. he was caught on camera grabbing a woman's arm and tearing the black lives matter fliers out of her hand. the man who recorded the viral video says when brennan noticed him recording, he ran into him with his bike, pinned him to the ground, and the camera is going to go down on the ground. the company where brennan work has fired him. their statement reads in part, made to order has zero tolerance for this behavior and we took immediate action and decisive action terminating the employee. we stand in solidarity with our black community. black lives matter. we are back in 60 seconds with new criticism from president trump. why he's now zeroing in on an

nfl player as the country continues the conversation about race in america. plus an eerie sound coming from one of the most iconic bridges in the world. so what is going on on the golden gate bridge? we'll explain next.
7:13 pm
thousands of people gathered in downtown louisville, kentucky, today to honor what would have been breonna taylor's 27th birthday. the crowd of supporters released balloons, erupting in cheers and applause as they lifted into the sky. taylor was shot and killed by police while inside her own apartment this past march. her name has shot into the national spotlight during the recent protests. nfl star drew brees is standing by his apology for earlier comments on disrespecting the flag after taking criticism from president trump. originally the new orleans saints quarterback said this week, quote, i will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag. after a flood of backlash, he has been apologizing for that,
7:14 pm
and the president tweeted that breeze should not be apologizing for that. he should honor his stance for the flag. brees is doubling down on his apology and his pledge to be an ally for the black community in the fight for racial equality. back in 2016, former san francisco 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick began kneeling at nfl games to protest social injustice. it has cost him his career. a south bay mayor says he won't be able to attend a protest in his city tomorrow. that's because he's being called up to serve in the national guard. milpitas mayor rich tran says he planned to take a knee with protesters but instead will be deployed to help with civil unrest in some california cities. he's been a member of the national guard since 2014 and was deployed several times during his time as mayor. the golden gate bridge, it appears, can now sing. listen to this. it might be off key a little bit. what you're hearing is actually a hum to put it mildly created by a recent wind retrofit
7:15 pm
project to the bridge. the improvements, sidewalk railing slats, were installed to make the bridge more aerodynamic under high-wind conditions. but when wind passes through the new railings, it creates that noise. officials say they knew going into the retrofit the bridge would sing during high winds and a lot of people took notice and commented on social media, and not everybody likes it. joining us now, rob mayeda. he's not going to talk about the bridge, but he might talk about that wind that is causing the noise. rob. >> yeah. it will go to the whistle index for the wind speeds. san francisco, it is still gusty around the bay. clear skies, no sign of any fog in san francisco, but the wind, 25 miles per hour. so if that's enough to make that hum or whistle around the golden gate, we'll have to see. wind gusts likely will increase a little bit over the next two hours before wind speeds level off a little bit briefly overnight. right now as we take you over towards the east bay, you notice
7:16 pm
livermore, 62 degrees, winds at 21 miles per hour. inland contra costa county up towards walnut creek, we're still seeing wind gusts of 30 miles per hour from walnut creek heading over towards martinez and fairfield. you'll likely see the strongest winds between now and 11:00 tonight. in san jose, mostly clear skies. a relatively mild 66 degrees. the wind good for one thing in terms of the air quality. we're seeing good air quality form provided we don't get any smoke from grass fires or wildfires like we've been seeing this afternoon up around the north bay and earlier to the nearby the concord area. so if the wind's very strong, even though the temperatures are relatively cool and the humidity numbers may not look all that bad, we have to watch out for those gusty winds fan something spot fires. a lot of red here. between now and 11:00, gusts up to 45 miles per hour and briefly into tomorrow morning we should see a little less wind but some chilly temperatures. look at santa rosa down to 45
7:17 pm
degrees. our highs generally in the same ballpark as we saw today. around the santa clara valley, numbers in the low 70s but notice the wind speed. still above 20 miles per hour. similar conditions inland east bay areas east of 680, temperatures climbing into the 70s. warmest spots tomorrow out near antioch and pittsburg. could see temperatures as warm as the mid-70s. around the peninsula, numbers in the 60s to near 70. probably the coolest day of the next five around the bay area for tomorrow. you can see san francisco still in the 60s and north bay temperatures climbing -- let's go back to that number. you'll see numbers in the mid-70s around the north bay for tomorrow afternoon. the satellite view is pretty interesting. what's causing the wind is a cold weather system dropping into northern california, generating showers off to the north. we don't think they're going to get as far south as the bay area. they'll probably stop around mendocino county, maybe northwestern sonoma county may see a brief isolated shower. as we drop into the bay partly cloudy skies during the day tomorrow with the best
7:18 pm
shower chances staying off to our north and east. but look at the sierra. we'll be seeing some pictures around the summit of some snow showers, air that's cold enough for snow, near 5,000 to 6,000 feet tonight into tomorrow. high pressure building in. the reason temperatures starting to climb up toward the late part of the week. late week, a cutoff low approaching the coast which we think will start to tool down our temperatures as we head towards next weekend. san francisco, mid-70s next week. just like we saw last week, tuesday, wednesday, and thursday we're back into summer-like temperatures. valleys soaring into the 90s midweek, then trending cooler as we head towards next weekend. so a little too much wind around the bay area this weekend but just an interesting mix of sierra snow, wind here and temperatures in the 60s and 70s. two or three days from now, back into the 90s. terry, back to you. >> so it goes. rob, thanks very much. still ahead, new covid-19 concerns. tonight the new testing site set up specifically for protesters.

anniversary of d-day, a living museum that was part of that infamous day remains closed after a massive fire at san francisco's pier 45. the ss jeremiah o'brien has a big banner on it thanking firefighters for saving that ship. last month we almost lost it. the o'brien is the soul survivor of the 6,000-ship armada that was at normandy on this day back in 1944. it was damaged in that fire on may 24th but not too bad thanks to the efforts of the san francisco fire department. nice story there. anthony flores joining us now. he's got your day in sports. anthony. >> hey, terry. i hope you're doing well. joining the conversation. spurs coach gregg popovich with an emotional message on race relations in america. stick around. sports is next. we're here for you and we're open.

hold back when he said there needs to be change in the country and in the nfl. >> how the heck are there only four black coaches out of 32 head coaches? how are there only two g.m.s? we're in a predominantly -- the majority of our players are black. so the fact that there's that few, i mean that's not debatable. like i don't know if people are openly thinking they're doing it, which i think the people sort to that, but that's what the problem is. it is something that has to get better. >> shanahan says he would support any protest by his players to bring about change. san antonio spurs head coach gregg popovich is also speaking out. he delivered an emotional message about the death of george floyd. >> i think i'm just embarrassed as a white person to know that that can happen, to actually watch a lynching. you know, we've all seen books and you look in the books and you see black people hanging up on trees. and you -- you are amazed.
