it's devastating. it's scary. it's not our quiet town. >> right now at 4:30, a santa cruz community is mourning after a deputy is shot and killed in the line of duty. next in a live report on what we're learning about the suspect and who is in custody. plus, as calls for defunding police departments grows louder, the mayor of the bay area's largest city, san jose, says he won't do that. we're going to tell you why coming up in a live report. and here we go again. those temperatures set to soar in parts of the bay area firefighters already battling multiple fires. meteorologist kari hall is

tracking the red flag warning. her forecast just seconds away. and a good morning to you. thank you for joining us. laura is off but the gang is all here. mike has a look at the commute coming up in just a bit. first, we want to start with meteorologist kari hall. kari, we're talking about the fire danger and that's a big scare for a lot of people. it was so windy over the weekend. that red flag warning for solano county as we still track the quail fire that's been going on and multiple smaller fires burning around the bay area win again that continues today. we've actually had some cooler than normal temperatures, so today as it gets just a little bit warmer, we will still have the fire concern but we'll have some warming as we go through the week. but midweek a few spots hitting 90 degrees. more on that and a weekend cooldown coming up.

mike, you've been keeping an eye on the roads. what's going on as drivers get ready to head out? i'm hearing about something i can't see but you're talking about it, the wind, making the fire risk higher. richmond/san rafael bridge does have the advisory from chp. it's clear right now. as we're looking out to your maps, no problems on the drive across 580 just near the top of your screen coming through the middle. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive around the bay. we are looking at green sensors including out of the alat this mont altamont. friends and family are mourning the death of a santa cruz county sheriff's sergeant killed in the line of duty over the weekend. 38-year-old damon gutzwiller died in an ambush in ben lomond. another dut chp officer were also injured. good samaritans risked their lives to help capture the

suspected. details on that and last night's emotional vigil. >> reporter: with loud voices and heartfelt stories the community of ben lomond paid tribute to fallen officer damon gutzwiller of the santa cruz sheriff's office after responding to a call about a suspicious white van that could contain weapons am he left behind a wife and child and another one on the way. this resident lives on the same block as the suspect. 32-year-old steven carrillo, an enlisted member of the u.s. air force. signs in the neighborhood read blue lives matter. >> it's devastating. it's scary. it's not our quiet town, but i felt like i needed to go out the next day and do something to let them know i support the guy because it's just tragic. >> reporter: after ambushes officers, the suspect attempted to flee and carjack several

vehicles. during a failed attempt new video shows civilians from the enabled helped in helding carrillo down during his arrest becoming local heroes of sorts. a witness shared two men secured the suspect and one man's dog helped in the takedown. one of the civilian heroes returned home still in disbelief over what happened. two other officers were injured, a chp officer and another santa cruz county deputy who is now in stable condition. the fbi is now actively working with the santa cruz county sheriff's office to see if there is a possible connection between shooting and another shooting in oakland last month that killed a federal officer, 53-year-old david patrick underwood. on friday the fbi released photos of a white van believed to have been used in the may 29th shooting outside the federal building. the shooting in ben lomond also involved a white van. the pain and grief visibly seen and felt from ben lomond's residents. in that sadness, pride for their

local heroes. in santa cruz county, nbc bay area news. a touching message from santa cruz sheriff's office after the massive turnout at the vigil last night for sergeant gutzwiller. it reads in part our hearts are heavy but your words, your prayers, your thoughts and support have been unmeasurable. police chief eddie garcia tweeting about the fallen sergeant. the sheriff's badge showing support for his office. more peaceful protests across the nation and here in the bay area within the last 24 hours. hundreds of people from oakland to vallejo taking to the streets demanding justice but for people killed at the hands of police in recent days during protests as well as looting. a san jose mayor sam liccardo is rejecting calls to

defund police saying law enforcement needs reform not reduction. he made those comments ahead of a budget proposal set for today and during the nationwide movement in some places to defend police. they won't help us do it. it is wrong -- the wrong idea and the worst possible time and the budget release will reflect that. the mayor calls for a ban on the use of rubber bullets in crowds as well as a full review of san jose's use of force policy. today a public memorial for george floyd will take place in houston. floyd died while in police custody after being pinned to the ground with an officer's knee to his neck for over eight minutes. other services were already held in honor of floyd. the man charged with the murder of floyd's death will appear in court for the first time.

former officer derek chauvin is facing second-degree murder charges. three other officers faced charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder. a lawyer for officer thomas lane tells the "today" show lane asked chauvin twice if officers should roll floyd over. >> now when he's holding his legs he says to chauvin, well, should we roll him over because he says he can't breathe? chauvin says, no. chauvin, if you've ever been in the military, you ask your sergeant, should we do something, he says no, are you going to say, well, no, i'm going to do it anyway? i don't think so. >> there will be no cameras allowed in today's court hearings. firefighters are still battling a stubborn fire in solano county. strong winds continue to fuel it. it started saturday afternoon north of vacaville. acres burned, that's 40% r

headquarters and here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open flat to moderately higher following friday's rally sparked by the surprise surge in employment numbers last month. the economy adding a record 2.5 million jobs in may when economists have been expecting a drop of more than 8 million jobs. that reverse as few of the job losses it does build on signs that economic activity may be rebounding faster than anticipated. the dow jumping more than 800 points on friday and nearly 7% for the week. the nasdaq closing at a record high since mid-february. it's the first of the three major stock indices to trade at all-time highs since the pandemic shut down the global economy. apple will let customers buy e ip ipad. digital card connected to the apple watt et and a physical card made of titanium.

and do it for the gram, just not in person. speaking of apple, the company receiving a patent that could be used for taking group selfies while you're still being socially distant. people would be invited to take part in a group selfie and it would arrange them in a single image. participants could edit to put them front and center. it's unclear whether apple will move ahead with the idea. now, kari, back to you. thank you, rahel, the "today in the bay" team needs to take a selfie together. it would be nice to have that feature. in the south bay today we get a look at our temperature trend in campbell. we are going to see a morning start in the 50s. it makes it into the low 70s today. even hotter temperatures ahead and the forecast coming up. i have to smile at those temperatures.

h laura is off but we will hold it down. kari, it's going to be warmer which is increasing the fire danger that we have right here in our area. the thing that's been increasing our fire danger is the high wind and the vegetation is so dry. our temperatures have been cooler than normal and we're going to come up to right where we should be for this time of year. that continues until 8:00 this evening as the winds pick up once again. you're probably already feeling that right now as you head out the door this morning. as we look at our relative humidity that's also been fairly low, but then i put the color contours on here that show the wind speeds that we'll see and at times those winds will be gusting up to 40 miles per hour especially coming through the delta this morning. as we look at this forecast as we go into late morning and

afternoon, the winds come up. that will be of high concern for today. gusty winds and low humidity. the temperatures not too much of a problem. concord and our temperature trend nice and cool. as we go through this forecast highs will reach into the low to mid-80s. we're in the 60s and 70s. as we go into the rest of the week, though, high pressure builds, we'll see our temperatures going up and we'll reach into the low 90s by the middle of the week and although it will be hot this will not be nearly as hot as the past few weeks and those spikes in temperatures. a warm midweek but we cool down again in time for the weekend. we're still on the temperature roller coaster with highs in the 80s. upper 80s tomorrow and then 90 degrees on wednesday.

we'll cool off and look at highs that will reach into the upper 70s and lower 80s. how is it looking, mike? better for me. we have a black screen. that's my map monitor. the maps are still running, i have to restart that one portion so let's take a look at your screen and we'll see that traffic is flowing smoothly throughout the south bay. 87 at the bottom of the screen slowing on the southbound side all the way from downtown to the expressway. it looks like it's just about cleared up. there's nothing reported on the chp grid -- the caltrans grid as far as any road work going on so everything should be moving smoothly. it looks like everything else is moving nicely as well as out of the altamont pass. a note for the south bay and b.a.r.t. in general they've expanded service starting today. b.a.r.t. trains will start at 5:00. vta will have more hours and more routes as well.

a little bit of slowing shows up coming out of the altamont. that's what we expect. back to you. >> thank you, mike. weekend protests took place statewide including in san diego county. this is where people marched through chula vista. in sacramento an estimated 15,000 people rallied and marched to the state capitol. the chp eventually cleared protesters peacefully. last night was sacramento's first full night without a curfew in nearly a week. elsewhere in southern california thousands marched on hollywood boulevard, eventually protesters stopped at one of the busiest intersections shutting down traffic. many called for positivity and for the nation to come together. >> this is for my people but for all people, and i think that's becoming clear to everybody that this is about everybody. >> this is one of more than a dozen marches to happen

yesterday across l.a. county all in the wake of an announcement from top law enforcement leaders. they say people who have been arrested for breaking curfew or failing to disperse will not face criminal charges. authorities still plan to go after those accused of more serious crimes. to the coronavirus and the newest numbers. six bay area counties are reporting new confirmed cases. there are nearly 16,000 confirmed cases overall and 462 deaths. some of the increased numbers are connected to a surge of cases at san quentin state prison. more than a dozen infected there. according to "the chronicle" several inmates considered to be high risk were transferred to san quentin from california institution of men in chino. they then tested positive after the transfer. prison leaders say none of the inmates were exposed to the general population. and recent cases of retail

rage are prompting one store manager in modesto to launch a new facebook page. she calls it retail life during covid-19. she posted a message of a recent bruise and bloodied face. she says this happened when a customer sucker punched her after learning they sold an aboveground pool. they are dealing with in-store mask requirements. her facebook page has thousands of followers. coming up for you on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: a viewer we helped two years ago reaches out again, but something doesn't seem right. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. how we spotted a scam aimed at us next. and happening now for you, the bellagio fountains are running but there aren't a lot of people there to see them because it was more like a ghost town there for the city's

favor. i need to get an amazon gift card for my niece for her birthday but i can't do it now because i'm currently out of town and isolated. sure, whatever. we saw a few red flags here. just to make sure we called jane. she said her email had been hacked. friends and family got the same email. many were suspicious because they knew jane doesn't have a niece. we replied to the email and told the scammer we were on to them and we asked to talk. we're still waiting to hear back. to protect yourself, here is what you need to do. if you get an email like this, do not click any of the links in it at all. call the sender to see if it's legitimate. if they say no tell them their email might have been hacked, update your password frequently. jane tells us she did that just now. back to you. >> thanks, chris. president trump's latest xhenlts on comments on the players' protests. the president yesterday tweeted to commissioner roger goodell in
