been talking about how windy it's been and also still the high fire danger we'll have today especially for solano county as we track the quail fire, what's been going on there. we will still have these high fire conditions because of the low humidity and also because of those winds that have been gusting. it's been really windy over the weekend. you probably felt that. i put the relative humidity numbers on here. we will have some brighter colors here. as we go into the afternoon the humidity comes down to the 20% range and then the winds will be gusting at times at about 25 to 30 miles an hour. this evening it will still be windy as the humidity stays low and the vegetation is very dry. that's the reason we have to watch out for this. our vegetation right now is at about the levels it normally is

in about august. if you're heading out for a run it will be cool. in parts of the south bay, heading out around saratoga, no matter what time today you can get out for some high activity and still be very comfortable. some of our inland east bay temperatures will reach into the mid-80s today. mostly 70s and low 80s. winds backing off by the middle of the week but our temperatures will go up. we're looking at a hot midweek. by the weekend a new storm system will approach from the north and bring us cooler air. we'll see some gusty winds once again but much cooler temperatures as we go from the low 90s on wednesday to the 70s for the weekend and san francisco will also have a pretty significant cooldown as well as we head back to the 60s. mike, you've been watching the commute. what's been going on? are those metering lights on yet? all right, kari, if you were going to bet me i would say i lost. we do not have the metering

>> a little warmer. over the weekend with those gusty winds and the cold front coming through it was a little bit cooler than normal. let's head outside in dublin as we get started on this monday morning. you may need a jacket as our temperatures have dipped into the upper 40s but then we'll see it warming up today into the upper 70s, once again not bad at all as we head into the low to mid-80s in some of our warmest spots. in the south bay expect a high of 80 degrees and 84 today in santa rosa while san francisco will reach 72 degrees. we'll talk about hotter temperatures in our forecast coming up in a few minutes and, mike, you've been watching the commute. how is it looking? >> i found out who was betting against me? a live look shows you the metering lights were turned on at 6:25 this morning, just after i had predicted that be the case. look at the backup. moving pretty well in the cash lanes but are still backing up

here and the map shows you it's slow coming off the maze actually smooth until you get to the toll plaza itself and slow on the incline. that's about it. there may be a stall somewhere around highway 13. highway 24 but the rest of the bay looking good. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we want to talk about more peaceful protests across the nation and here within the last 24 hours. hundreds of people from oakland to vallejo taking to the streets again demanding justice not just for george floyd but for people killed at the hands of local police officers in recent days during protests and looting. and protesters across the country are launching a national movement demanding cities to defund police departments and make other major changes. san jose mayor sam liccardo says that his police department, well, they need more reform rather than less funding. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live for us at san jose pd to explain what kind of reform is already taking place. sharon? >> reporter: marcus, these protests are definitely raising questions on how to move

forward. mayor liccardo says the police department needs resources to protect themselves and the public. mayor liccardo has expressed support for the peaceful protesters and asked to stop using rubber bullets and rejects the idea of defunding the police department. he says a city budget released today will explain. in a statement released yesterday mayor liccardo said defunding police departments won't help us do it. it is the wrong idea at the worst possible time. last week the mayor called for a full review of san jose's use of force policies. san francisco's mayor has announced a plan to defund the police department and put more money into african-american communities. on the other end of the spectrum the minneapolis city council is planning to disband the city's police department, all in the wake of the death of george floyd. a veto proof majority of city councilmembers made the announcement at a rally over the weekend. the city councilmembers say they plan to invest in community led safety initiatives instead of

the police department. >> our commitment is to end our city's toxic relationship with the minneapolis police department, to end policing as we know it, and to re-create systems of public safety that actually keep us safe. >> reporter: meantime president trump and police department unions say that defunding the police department would only increase the risk to the public. reporting live in san jose, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> sharon, thank you. today a public memorial for george floyd will take place in houston. floyd died while in police custody after being pinned to the ground with an officer's knee to his neck more than eight minutes. other services were already held in honor of floyd in minneapolis as well as north carolina. meantime the man charged with the murder of floyd will appear in court for the first time. former officer derek chauvin is facing second-degree murder

charges. three other officers face charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder. the lawyer for former officer thomas lane tells the "today" show that lane actually asked twice if officers should roll floyd over. >> now when he's holding his legs he asks chauvin, should we roll him over? chauvin says no. chauvin, if you've ever been in the military, you ask your sergeant should we do something, he says no, are you going to say, well, no, i'm going to do it anyway? i don't think so. >> there will be no cameras allowed in court today for those hearings. santa cruz communities are mourning the loss of a deputy killed in the line of duty saturday. he is described as a family man and a law enforcement veteran. roz plater is in santa cruz where a memorial for his honor is growing. >> reporter: this has struck the community pretty hard. that memorial is growing.

people even stopping by this morning as you see some of the officers filing out here. one man saying a prayer. all of this is very frustrating to people. it hammed on saturday afternoon after a wild scene, a shoot-out. the suspect attempted a carjacking to escape but two good samaritans stopped him in his tracks. >> he's going to get up! there's only two people holding him down! >> reporter: now this is cell phone video showing some tense moments after neighbors captured the suspect and held him down until officers arrived. it happened saturday afternoon in ben lomond. investigators say the suspect ambushed deputies after they arrived to investigate a suspicious van. the sheriff says the suspect opened fire, injured two deputies and killed 38-year-old sergeant damon gutzwiller, a beloved officer, husband and father. the community turned out in large numbers to pay tribute to him and to show their support.

>> we're letting the officers know that we have their back and that they matter. his life wasn't lost in vain. >> reporter: now the suspect has been identified as 32-year-old steven carrillo, that's the suspect, we're told, an active duty sergeant stationed at travis air force base. the fbi is also investigating whether there's a link between this case and the ambush killing of a federal security officer outside the federal courthouse. that happened in oakland on may 29th. both of those cases involved a white van, the van in this case was full of guns, we're told, as well as explosives. we expect to get more information about all of this at a about this investigation this afternoon. we're live in santa cruz. i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> all right, roz, thank you. there was a touching message from the santa cruz sheriff's office. this is after the massive turnout at a vigil last night

for sergeant gutzwiller. it reads in part, our hearts are heavy but your words, your prayers, your thoughts and support have been unmeasurable. eddie garcia also tweeting about the fallen sergeant. he posted this picture of the santa cruz sheriff's badge with a mourning band wrapped around it showing his support for the sheriff's office. firefighters are still battling a stubborn fire fueled by strong winds in solano county this started saturday afternoon we are winters, north of vacaville. so far 2,000 acres have burned. it's 40% contained and three structures are destroyed with at least another 100 threatened. evacuation orders have been lifted. kari, you say one of the fueling things to the fires are the winds. yeah, we've had really high winds over the weekend and low humidity and the vegetation is

really dry. in fact, we've had a lot of small fires around the bay area and still today have this red flag warning continuing for solano county and parts of the sacramento and san joaquin valleys as we go into today it will stay windy. i want to show you that with a relative humidity overlayed with the wind forecast and the color contours where we see the bright colors is where the winds will pick up today and the humidity levels will drop down into the mid-20s range with those winds at times at 25 to 40 miles an hour so still the threat of wildfires today. some of the brushfires as those winds stay gusty. and then in the next few days we're going to be heating up. i'll talk more about that coming up. mike has an update on how the morning commute is rolling. kari, we did have the metering lights turned on. the backup is there on the approach but the maze moves smoothly and so does the berkeley curve. that's good news. the map shows you overall things are moving very nicely. i want to call out what's been going on in the peninsula for

quite some time becoming more congested there. so there is a crash that happened early in the morning and there's still a pole down, a telephone pole might be down there and so we're watching for the area. maybe a light pole, in fact, just off the intersection. as we take a live look getting over there, the san mateo bridge moves smoothly. there's free month. a smooth drive here as well this is near the warm springs station and, marcus, you have some b.a.r.t. information. starting today b.a.r.t. trains will be running on a new schedule. this is to gear up for the opening of two new stations. the milpitas and north san jose's berryessa stations are opening saturday. also today the dublin station will stop selling those paper tickets. joining several others and moving to the clipper cards only. parents and teachers are now joining together to try to save a popular private school that closed suddenly after more than 80 years in walnut creek.
