north 280, there is a disabled vehicle there. no slowing but now you know the mystery of the circle. back to you. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. we have hit new records on the stock market which is hard to believe given all of the situations that the world is dealing with these days. futures show investors got a little over their skis, a pullback on the dow this morning. the s&p 500 now back to where it was before the pandemic like it never happened at all. definitely the pandemic is still happening. the nasdaq hits an all-time record high despite the economic research confirmed yesterday, yes, we are in a recession. our high point was february, the shutdown came and that hit the economy with the shutdown. we saw the longest boom, more

than nine years through two presidencies. we did get the good jobs news on friday. that's led to a debate whether we should continue to do stimulus, to pay that extra money with the unemployment benefits. that ends july 31st. there was some hope that maybe congress would continue that. it doesn't look like they will because of that good job news. if you don't have a job now, some bad news for you. a new sight from core research shows as many as 25,000 stores could close permanently this year because of the pandemic shutting down malls. malls were dying even before that. macy's will hang on. it should be able to operate a few more years. marcus and kris, nordstrom, meanwhile, is warning the state of california it will be laying off employees. the edd has this notice where

when large companies are going to lay off a lot of people they have to warn people. we're seeing a reduction in the number of w.a.r.n. notices. that's more good news that not only are more people going back to work but there are fewer layoffs. >> small comfort for the nordstrom folks who are now wondering if they're the ones. >> that is a tough one. thanks, scott. 6:17 for you this morning and some possible good news if you love a good movie in a theater. you may be able to head back by the end of the week. guidelines are being released. they recommend needers only allow 100 people in at a time, start a reservation system and have moviegoers wear masks. it's ultimately up to the health leaders to give the green light for theaters to reopen.

an east bay family serving up something good. each day outside of their home for families struggling this is a beautiful story, kris. >> yes, you can be little and help a lot. the sutton sisters in livermore open their own farm stand to the outside public. the girls offer free food and fresh vegetables and are trying to help people who really need it right now. >> there are so many people out of work and people don't want to help. they can come without shame to take what they need and give what they can. >> i can't say enough about the. >> each morning they post what kind of food they have for that day and when it will be available. that is just so sweet to see them working together.

right now. the tree pollen has gone down as well as the other allergens. but, once again, that tree -- the grass pollen right now is the main allergen. let's check out these high fmts. upper 80s and a few low 90s, too. the seven-day forecast as it gets slightly hotter tomorrow our highs up to 89 degrees in napa today. 85 in palo alto and san jose will reach 87 degrees. so this high pressure moving in makes it hotter for a little while. then a storm system going into the end of the week will help cool us off. won't bring us any rain but we will have at least a couple days of cooler temperatures before it heats up once again. so our temperatures are still going up and dow low 90s tomorrow.he look at fri

significant cooldown. saturday is also looking pretty nice. we start to warm up again by sunday into early next week for our inland areas and san francisco will see those numbers coming out of the 70s and back to the 60s in time for the weekend. all right, mike, as you get those kids up and ready for the day how is it looking for people heading out the door? >> it's going grade. no shade against my kids, it was me who could do more. my kids are both graduating tomorrow moving up into junior high school and high school. the traffic volume builds. metering lights have been on but we still see movement in all the lanes and that's good news. a lighter build on our maps which is what we see. a smooth drive through the maze. no major problems. we do have slowing coming in, your typical pattern out of the altamont. 680 getting fed from 84 with no problems. and the rest of the bay moves

oakland woman who got a surprise bill after she rented a car prepandemic. >> she reached out to chris chmura and his team to help steer her in the right direction. >> reporter: alicia rented a car from budget in chicago. well, a few weeks later she got an unexpected $250 charge for business services on top of her rental charges. alicia asked budget to explain. it said the fee was for cleaning of dirt and a smoke smell in the car. alicia insisted she returned that car clean and doesn't smoke. she asked budget for photos and it sent her this one right here. the smoking gun, so to speak, is a close-up of the gasket between the door frame and the white right there is said to be ash from a cigarette. alicia wasn't convinced. she asked to refund the $250 and it refused so she turnedo wouldn't budge for us.

kari, i've been tracking your forecast so i went sleeveless today because i know it will be hot later. yes, and that's a good plan for us all because we have to dress appropriately for this kind of weather. it will be a warm day as we take a live look outside in the south bay we're checking out our temperature trend for san jose. we're at 61 degrees so it's still going to feel nice and cool but the warming trend kicks in by early in the afternoon. upper 80s here but there will be a few spots in the inland east bay that reach into the low 90s. we'll talk about this and even hotter temperatures ahead. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the commute. how is it going? >> yeah, also keeping these sleeves rolled up because of that forecast. all right, we're going to the bay bridge where we've been eyeing the backup. the metering lights were turned on before 6:00. that's early considering the last few months of traffic. the earliest we've seen of that traffic is really not a problem.

the fastrak lanes are slowing and metering lines are affecting the cash only lanes there as well. no problems on the approach. a build for highway 4 through concord and the rest of the bay shows a typical pattern of 5:45. this traffic is lighter for a tuesday. back to you. breaking news to tell you about this morning. we have a crew at the lowe's in dublin where there is a lot of police activity. it's the location on dublin boulevard. there are more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles there at the scene and a drone is being used as part of the investigation. we're working to find out exactly what is going on there and police activity at the lowe's in dublin. one of our reporters is on the way to the scene. we'll bring you more as soon as we get it as well as posted online on twitter as well as nbc bay area.

tesla not yet responding to reports some of its employees at its premonth plant are sick with coronavirus. "the washington post" cites two who say workers tested positive last month and prompted a flurry of managers meetings. the workers were reportedly told to stay home. you might remember that tesla last month defied alameda county's health order when it first reopened its plant and led to elon musk threatening to move the company right out of the bay area. we have reached out to tesla for comment and will let you know when we hear back. happening today for you, change will be front and center in some bay area cities. it comes as protesters across the country police departments be defunded. "today in the bay's" jackie ward is live for us in san francisco at city hall with a look at what's happening here in our area. jackie? >> reporter: different cities are taking different approaches.

three want to legally limit the use of weapons at protests. here is what they are demanding that be banned, the use of rubber bullets, flash bangs, and chemical agents like tear gas and pepper spray. mayor london breed says she will lead the effort to divert some police funds. lead remembers considering a ballot measure to limit the police economies's power. many want the police department defunded and feel a disproportionate number of officers are no longer there to serve and protect. >> if i call 911 for an emergency they're more likely to reprimand me than do what's necessary. we have to protect each other. >> reporter: sam liccardo says he supports police reform which is why they are no longer use rubber projectiles for dispersing crowds but said he will not defund the police

department because he believes it wouldn't help the very people that have been victims of systemic racism. reform is also happening at the state level. legislative leaders are trying to ban what's called the sleeper hold in which police officers put pressure on either side of a person's neck. in san francisco, jackie ward, "today in the bay." thank you, jackie. if you saw san francisco's landmarks lit up in crimson and gold last night that was a tribute to george floyd and the movement that his death now sparked. some of the city's most iconic buildings including city hall were lit in the crimson and gold color. those are the colors of floyd's high school alma mater in houston. sfo's international terminal and the conservatory of flowers were lit up the same way. there are more tributes today. at noon muni halt for 8:46 which is the exact amount of time that george floyd was pinned to the ground under the knee of that minneapolis police officer.

berkeley is getting closer to getting its own mural reading black lives matter. this is after the city manager indicate indicated her support. this follows a similar mural put in place on sunday along three blocks of 15th street in downtown oakland. coming up on "today in the bay" in less than ten minutes jay gray is in houston where george floyd's funeral will take place. he's going to explain to what's will happen there today and, of course, more about that emotional service. 6:36 now. back to our coronavirus pandemic coverage, a controversial new finding coming out of the world health organization about the spread of coronavirus amongst people who are asymptomatic. apparently they're not to blame for the spike in cases, though the spike in cases is growing

the bay's" roz plater is in san >> reporter: right and indeed it has caused so much confusion. we're told the world health organization will issue a clarifying statement a bit later today. of course all of this directly contradicts what we've been told by the cdc who says indeed people who are asymptomatic can indeed and do spread the virus. now it's why we have all been told at that we should practice social distancing and to wear masks or face coverings when we're in public. a w.h.o. official later yesterday took to twitter to try and say that the data showed that asymptomatic individuals are much less likely to spread the virus but those who are presymptomatic who initially show no symptoms are a transmission risk. >> this message from who i think was a bit of a disaster because it caused so mn. there are lots of people with infection who have no symptoms

"today in the bay's" jay gray reports outside of the church for today's emotional service. >> reporter: good morning. should be poignant and it comes after what's been 14 days and nights of protests across the country. nearly a week of public memorials. invited guests saying a final private good-bye. ♪ >> reporter: overnight hundreds gathered. not as much to protest as to pray. >> i want to thank you for the life -- >> reporter: and to honor george floyd on the high school football field where he became a star though ultimately it wasn't his athleticism but untimely passing at the hands of minneapolis police that would define his legacy. >> this is a blessing. this is bigger than george right

now. >> reporter: overflow crowds solemnly paying their respects at the church where floyd's private funeral will take place in just hours pulled here by a common fear and pain. >> when i look at him i saw my brothers, i saw my boyfriend. really hard and sat breaking because that could be any one of us. >> reporter: they see a strength in being together. >> for all people to be together as a unit so we can make a change. >> reporter: change endorsed by joe biden as he visits with george floyd's family. and by tens of thousands across the country in the two weeks since his death. now live the procession, george floyd's body being brought back to this church for the last time before the service a bit later this morning and his internment.

the family following as it pulls into the church as preparations continue for what will be a very special, a very emotional, most believe, service this evening following the service he will be buried in a family plot alongside his mother. those protesting for weeks say while he's laid to rest they won't rest until they see significant change. >> jay gray being certainly his death has created a global movement as millions of people are taking part in it. jay gray at the funeral of floyd. thank you so much. a strange accusation against that elderly man that was pushed down by police. >> a man fake his injuries and more.the president said the man

have been trying to jam police radios when he approached the police officers, something we have never heard before. he says the man fell harder than he was pushed. you know the incident. you've seen it before. the man approaching police, they push him down, doctors say he hit his head. he was bleeding from the ears. we saw that in the photographs as well. two officers have been suspended. in this morning's tweet the president says the 75-year-old may have been trying to black out police equipment using a scanner. that you would need to use a scanner within inches of a radio seems unlikely. the president who has access to the world's best intelligence agencies says he learned about this on oann, one america news network. it is a right-wing organization that has little credibility in the mainstream. oann once pushed the conspiracy theory in the past that california had banned the sale of bibles. california has not banned the

sale of bibles. other news, the latest "wall street journal"/nbc news poll shows joe biden pulling ahead of the president especially in women, both college educated and not. president trump losing support among women quickly trailing joe biden in women by 25 points. now this is a national registered voters number you're seeing on your screen. we don't elect presidents nationally. we elect them state by state. take those national polls with a grain of salt. with the idea of the state by state in mind, hold rallies. his campaign says he may start as soon as this month despite the pandemic. a record number of hospitalizations for covid this week according to the texas state health department. worse than they had during the shutdown itself. we will be tracking and

>> tomorrow will be slightly hotter so we're looking at a warming trend under way starting today as we take a live look outside as we see san jose looking from the foothills. we started out cool, if you have yard work, if you want to go for a run or if you have some work to do try to get it done early. we're taking a look at walnut creek temperature trend and we'll be at 54 degrees at 7:00. then you seep at noon we're at 81 degrees. too warm for me. and we're going to see our high temperatures that will reach into the upper 80s and low 90s. it will reach 79 degrees in the upper 80s. san francisco will reach 74 degrees. so our hot weather starting to move in briefly as this high pressure builds across the region. by friday we're getting a storm

system passing very close by and it's not going to bring us any rain but will help bring in some cooler air and that will stick with us for a couple of days before it starts to warm up. we're going up and then back down. we're in the upper 80s today for the inland valleys, up to 92 degrees tomorrow and then back to the up eaper 80s. friday is when we get significant cooling and looking pretty nice and comfortable on saturday, warming up so that pool weather will be back. you've been watching the commute. how is it looking as people get ready to head out. i will show you a view of the bay and no problems along the perimeter. a smooth flow of traffic along those freeways. we have some slowing out of the

welcome back. here is a look at the top stories we're covering for you on "today in the bay." breaking news this morning, a live look at the lowe's in dublin. there's a lot of police activity right now. it's happening on dublin boulevard. we know that there are more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles there at the scene. a drone is being used in part of the investigation. one of our reporters is on the scene. we'll bring you those updates as we get them online at nbcbayarea.com. and a live look at san francisco city hall, one of several cities considering placing new restrictions on police. several supervisors are proposing to legally limit the kinds of weapons police can use

during protests. at the want to ban the use of rubber bullets, flash bangs and chemicals like tear gas and pepper spray. in observing city leaders heard arguments to defund the police altogether. san jose police can no longer use rubber projectiles for the sole purpose of dispersing crowds in that city. and george floyd will be laid to rest in houston where he grew up. and bay area cities continue to hold their own vigils today as well. in san francisco kneeling for justice protests and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 this morning outside city hall. oakland bishop michael barber will hold a mass at 12:10. and in novato tonight a prayer vigil will be held at unity of marin at 7:00. that service will also be streamed live online. a live look in san jose this is where health leaders last night attributed the recent uptick in coronavirus hospitalizations. the recent reopening measures comes in the wake of a big

announcement by the world health organization. experts now say that it's rare to have the virus spread by infected patients who are not showing symptoms. that contradicts what the cdc is saying. the "today" show will have more on this new report coming up for you in just a few minutes. new for you this morning tesla is not responding to reports workers at its fremont plant recently tested positive for the coronavirus. "the washington post" cites two anonymous tesla employees who say several workers tested positive last month. and it prompted a flurry of managers meetings. the infected workers were told to stay home. tesla last month defied alameda county's shelter at home order when it first reopened its plant and that then led to elon musko out of the bay area. we did send an email over to tesla to see if they would comment. we'll let you know if we hear
