"today in the bay" continues -- or, actually, starts right now. we go for so long sometimes i think we just continue. thanks so much for joining us on this wednesday morning, i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping an eye on the traffic for us this morning. but, kari, i was thinking maybe short sleeved suits could be a trend. it would be perfect for today. >> just take off the jacket. it's going to be hot today. we're going to have hot weather as you head out. we have a mild start as we get a live look outside in dublin. the inland spots heating up quickly. we're in the upper 50s this morning reaching already the low 80s at noon and eventually we'll reach into the upper 90s in a few spots. but mostly some low to mid-90s for much of the inner bay. the south bay as well as the north bay. we're going to talk more about this as we get a weekend

cooldown. mike, you've been watching the roads. any issues for driving heading out? >> i had no issues but something popped up. green all over the bay as we expect. the first slowing out of the altamont, a little blip there. we do see on the bottom of your screen there was a slowdown south 101 from about capital expressway down to just shy of 85 where the arrow is. that just cleared up. there's another stretch. i think just slower vehicles. no incident on the earlier crash that cleared without incident. back to you. >> thanks for that, mike. breaking news for you this morning in the north bay, a shooting leaving multiple people hurt in vallejo. our news desk has been w now "today in the bay's" jackie morning? >> reporter: unfortunately, marcus, some time before 10:00 a shooting happened in the northern part of vallejo on

cynthia avenue between wendy and amelia streets. witnesses tell us they believe this was a drive-by shooting. a 4-year-old birthday party may have taken place at the house where this happened because a big number 4 balloon was seen outside. witnesses say about an hour after the shooting there was a sudden screaming and crying from inside a home. police have not confirmed any of that. we are continuing to press them for details. right now we don't know how many victims we are. we don't know their status. we're still working to confirm a lot of information with police. we'll bring that you update as soon as we learn it. in vallejo, jackie ward, "today in the bay." >> jackie, thank you. developing for you now oakland police are talking more about the man shot and killed saturday night by officers on oakland's east side. cell phone video captured the scene afterwards. investigators say that erik salgado was recklessly driving a car recently stole friend a dealership during looting in oakland.

they say that he repeatedly rammed his car at chp officers who then fired also injuring his pregnant girlfriend inside the car. friends are calling it excessive force. >> it doesn't matter what the reason was. i'm sure there was 1,000 better ways to handle the situation than they did. >> police say that car was one of 74 stolen from a san leandro dealership last week. civil rights attorney john burris is now representing the family members. two major bay area school districts are reconsidering their relationship with law enforcement after police custody death of george floyd. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us with the new information on this story from overnight. bob? >> reporter: marcus, later today the oakland board of education will consider a george floyd resolution which called for the board to dissolve their own police force f. you're not aware they have 50 security officeers in that police department at the oakland school police

department. the proposal calls for the money for the police department to instead go to other positions such as social workers, psychologists and so-called restorative justice practitioners. the proposed resolution reads in part, and i'm quoting here, the district can no longer sit quietly and employ its own police force particularly against black men and boys. the chief of the police department points out that his officers respond to 1,000 calls roughly per semester but that he is open to a hybrid compromise that would employ his officers in whatever the school district has in mind. the organizing project will hold a news conference in support of the george floyd resolution. this will take place before the board meets at 5:30. yesterday the san francisco unified school district considered a similar proposal to cut ties with police and to end their financial support of the examiner report of the five-year memorandum of understanding with sfpd is already up for renewal,

was already facing resistance and is greater in light of george floyd. no date set for when the board will vote. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. black lives matter protesters plan to take their message straight to oakland mayor libby schaaf's neighborhood. tonight they plan to call for defunding opd during the protests outside of her home. meantime, the city of berkeley plans to prohibit the police from using tear gas. councilmember robinson tweeted the city council made that decision last night. he wrote in part, quote, no during the covid-19 and no end date. startling new data out this morning showing the number of covid-19 cases in the bay area on the rise. it's the business part that's starting to slowly reopen their doors. that's also a concern for some people. santa clara county, contra costa

county, alameda county reporting double digit increases and new daily cases over last week while the number is going up, governor gavin newsom says the hospitals in california are better prepared to handle sick patients. and experts tell us that testing and contact tracing will play an important role controlling the spread of covid-19. >> it's one thing to detect a positive case but the on ward transmission and that's something that we need to work on. >> also health experts say it's still not clear just yet how nationwide protests will impact the spread of the virus. well, there's now one more place where you can actually get tested for covid-19 in berkeley for free even if you don't have symptoms. the city's mayor was one of the first people to get a test at the martin luther king jr. youth center along oregon street right next to grove park.

now these are photos posted to his twitter page. that opened on monday and is run by the state of california. unlike other locations across the bay area at this one you actually can -- you do have to make an appointment to get the test. families struggling in the east bay now have a new resource. family matters is a new shelter created by emeryville and oakland. the building is a former recreation center which emeryville wasn't using. it took a year to round up the city, state, and federal money to open the doors because of social distancing rules just ten families will be allowed to move in today. 4:38. up in flames. still ahead for you on "today in the bay," horrifying scenes overnight in southern california as fire burns close to the 405. the fight under way right now to stop the spread.

winning streak falling 300 points as some traders booked profits from recent gains. the nasdaq closing at a new record high and even briefly traded at 10,000 for the first time and that was on growing optimism over the reopening of the economy. mgm resorts plans to reopen more casinos in the next few weeks. the ex-caliber will open tomorrow followed by the luxor and aria, mandalay bay. the properties are operating at about 50% capacity. and amc entertainment plans to have theaters fully open worldwide by july in time for warner brothers' release of christopher nolan's latest film and disney's live action version of "mulan." the company reporting a $2.2 billion loss in the first quarter. it took several steps to offset the blow from the closure of theaters including furloughs and negotiating new deals with

here because as we look at our forecast high temperature today and our record high for today's date we are going to stay well below some of these numbers but, once again, it will be a hot afternoon as we go hour by hour we're going to look at how you make your plans for today. if you have some outdoor activities, the most comfortable hours will be before noon, of course. as we head to noon we're in the upper 80s and then some low 90s. a few of us will reach into the mid-90s today in parts of the inland north bay, east bay as well as the south bay. then as we go into this evening, if you want to head out for a walk later on it's going to be feeling much nicer as those winds start to pick up. but we are going to have one more really warm day before we start to see this cooler air coming in and shows a storm system passing to our north.

we'll have to see if possibly we could get a little bit of that rain between saturday evening and early on sunday. yeah, a lot of changes ahead here. some cooler air and we warm up. as we look at the seven-day forecast expect the highs in the low 90s and then the upper 80s tomorrow. look at friday, mid-70s. that will continue into saturday as well. by sunday we're starting to warm up once again, and it's going to be hot to start out early next week. mike, you've been watching the roads around the bay area. let's see the commute. things are calm on the freeways as far as the speed indicators go. we'll give you the green sensors as we would expect, typical pattern with no major issues as far as the speeds go. i want to call out first of all, we talked about the fire over in oakland. the roadside fire at the bottom of your screen, 880 at 23rd and near the overpass, the off ramp,

all are only and no injuries, no structures involved. the other one concord just off 242 a similar case roadside fire, perhaps someone cooking food overnight. a live look out there. how things are shaping up. coming toward us the headlights westbound 80. your commute direction underneath the silhouette of the university avenue overcrossing. look at that. we have steady traffic flowing down through the east shore but still just under 17 minutes from highway 4 past this shot all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza with no backups. we should see the metering lights before 6:36. crews are working on the ground and in the sky to contain this brush fire. take a look at it here. this is off the 405 freeway in bel air. you might be familiar with that area. fire burning on the opposite side of the gaetti center. at least 50 acres have burned since midnight. no structures are being

threatened and no evacuation orders are in place. firefighters have stopped the progress of flames. there were two other fires in the same area in the past two years. former vice president joe biden continues the conversation on racial injustice today. he's holding a virtual town hall with the naach ceo. biden also delivered a video message at george floyd's funeral. >> we cannot leave this moment thinking we can turn away from raci racism, from systemic abuse that still plagues americans lives. >> meantime, joe biden has won two more democratic presidential primaries winning west virginia and georgia last night. biden has suspended the delegates -- has surpassed the delegates needed to win the nomination. five states held primaries, georgia one of them.

voters there experienced long lines deep into the night. long past the pol closing. the snag had to do with newly purchased voting machine and lack of training due to the pandemic. some voters never received absentee ballots. an investigation has already been launched. 4:52 this morning. coming up on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: many pets simply hate a visit to the vet. right now with covid, many owners dread the trip, too. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. i have good news, your next visit to the vet might take place from the comfort of your home. happening now, dozens of hotels in mexico are now partially back open. this week hundreds of tourists began checking into resorts in the cancun area. they were shut down for two months due to the pandemic. some resorts are doing things like disinfecting guests luggage and doing away with buffets and

welcome back. 4:55. more and more people are seeing their doctor by telemedicine. you can add pats to the virtual house calls. to chris chmura who is working from home. >> reporter: good morning. conrad the consumer investigator canine is excited because veterinarians in california just got the gre do telemedicine. the department of consumer affairs said it's heard from a lot of vets. many owners fear exposure to covid-19, and they aren't taking their pets in as much as they should.

so the state just issued waivers that let vets do more exams remotely. but not all of them. if you already have a vet, you're set. the state says if your pet is an existing patient, the doctor can now diagnose and treat them for a new condition by telemedicine. also, they can order prescription refills for six extra months without an in-person appointment. now if you're visiting a vet for the first time you still have to go to the office. but you don't necessarily have to go inside. the california veterinary medical association is recommending minimized contact, and they are. case in point, with conrad's first visit to the vet mom and dad stayed in the car, the vet came out, took him inside, did the exam and some shots and the nurse brought him back out to us. pretty good. back to you guys. >> thanks, chris. the dmv says that all field offices will reopen by tomorrow. and while all offices are reopening services and capacity will be limited so the dmv

commute for us this morning. kari is keeping track of the high temperatures. we need to get ready for it. yes, we do. i think i'll go out for a walk during my break this morning before those temperatures warm up. we're already at 64 degrees as we look at our current temperatures in concord. the rest of us in the upper 50s. if you want to go out for a jog in antioch and are starting out early this morning it's the best time to get outside as our temperatures heat up today, you'll probably want to get somewhere where you can stay cool. nice to have some air conditioning as our temperatures will reach into the mid-90s there. we are getting that natural air conditioning continuing along the coastline. we'll talk more about this and also a nice cooldown for us all coming up in the forecast. mike, you've been watching the roads. any slow spots right now? no, kari, not really a slow spot but i have a concern.
