meteorologist kari hall keeping track of the forecast. a nice one out there for most o? >> right. and there will still bes that w temperatures today, but this is where we're beginning. at least we do have another few hours of some cooler weather starting out this morning. most of us in the mid to upper 50s. as we head over to concord and check out our temperature trend today. low 60s this morning and low 80s by noon. we'll talk more about a weekend cool down coming up and mike has a look at that morning commute. >> it's moving very smoothly right now, kari. the oakland crash at high street and we're looking over towards the maps and see a smooth drive and we're talking about the peninsula. north 101 if you're heading up, if you're using the hillsdale exit a disabled vehicle that affects you and also affect you, laura, if you're heading at 92 on the off ramp. back to you. >> thank you very much. breaking news we're

following for you overnight. we have learned that federal agents are looking into some suspected shootings here. the murders of two law enforcement officers here in the bay area. they're saying they could be connected to one that happened along the central coast. want to check in with "today in the bay" bob redell and more details on the search for the suspect just south of the bay area. bob? >> yes, good morning to you, laura. law enforcement does appear to be closing in on the suspect within the past few dhours. we have confirmed that law enforcement was able to hear the law enforcement firing off shots and law enforcement setting off flash bangs in the apartment complex and that law enforcement has shut down highway 101 off ramp there in the search for this man. take a look at this photo. this is mason james and he is from the monterey area. he opened fire on the police

department yesterday morning and when deputies arrived to shop he allegedly shot the deputy in the face and the condition of that deputy unknown. now, our investigative unit has learned that federal agents are investigating whether the recent murders of law enforcement in oakland and santa cruz county is connected to this attack in paso robles. on saturday a santa cruz sheriff was killed in an attack that involved guns and improvised explosive and two other members of law enforcement were injured in that attack. law enforcement arrested a man named steven carrillo. sources believe carrillo is part of a domestic terrorist cell and believe he shot and killed an officer in oakland two weeks ago. the white van in the oakland shooting is the same one they

recovered in the santa cruz county attack. the driver of that van, however, remains at large. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." president trump heads to dallas today to meet with police and religious leaders, but it's his rally in oklahoma next week that's sparking controversy. "today in the bay" tracie potts live in washington with that and the effort to remove symbols of racism in washington and the military bases. tracie? >> marcus, good morning. a big no from the president on removing or changing the names on those military bases. meantime, the president is facing a lot of questions about the timing and the location of his campaign rally. >> with friends of mine -- >> reporter: president trump heads to dallas today. he'll talk police reform with state leaders and law enforcement. but his rally next week in tulsa, oklahoma, that's drawing criticism. >> beautiful new venue. brand-new and they're looking forward to it. >> reporter: that rally, the

first since the coronavirus pandemic is scheduled on june 19th. a day when african-americans remember the end of slavery happening in a city where a white mob killed hundreds of black residents in 1921. the president also refusing to rename ten military bases honoring confederate generals. on capitol hill, democrats want confederate statues removed. >> the individuals who are being honored by that statue in effect fought to keep people enslaved. i don't think that's something we ought to honor in america. >> reporter: republicans are aiming to release their police reform plans friday. some think there is a chance for compromise with democrats who want to ban chokeholds and create a national data base of police misconduct. >> you can say if you don't give us that information and get money, people will change their opinion. >> we cannot approach this debate by cherry picking one or

two reforms and calling the job complete. >> reporter: the first congressional hearing on reforms featured the brother of george floyd. >> justice has to be served. >> reporter: testifying and leading a march near the white house calling for justice. tracie potts, nbc news. well, a day of protests yesterday in oakland ending last night. mayor libber schaaf's host and protesters held a moment of silence calling for change. earlier in the day, more than 1,000 people gathered in the district and crowds filled with many young people many of whom demanding the city rethink its ties to oakland police. >> defund opd and get opd out of schools. >> a lot of people really bad and it's not the right way. we want him to be out here and know that there are people that care about this. >> in oakland a powerful protest at lake merritt. people lay down face down with their hands behind their back

for nine minutes, the amount of time that george floyd was pinned to the ground by the former officer's knee. happening today in san francisco, black student it will start at the bay view opera house and eventually head on down third street. health providers in santa clara county are under new orders to ensure coronavirus testing kits are made available to anyone who needs them. county health officers say sarah cody issued that new order actually for the region yesterday. it requires testing be provided for anyone with symptoms. anyone who has been exposed or someone infected or any really worker in the high-risk situation. right now the county is falling short of its daily testing goals. meantime, in sonoma county, health leaders are reportedly rolling out expanded anti-body testing. the goal is to get a better picture of total exposures to the virus to help dictate future health policies. school districts now have

three weeks to get their plans in place for returning this fall. today san jose district leaders present their initial plan to parents and teachers. many of those families are already saying that if anything is like the end of the past school year, students may be in trouble. "today in the bay" kris sanchez is live with a progress report for us thisern moi morning. kris? >> it may be summer break for the kids but hardly a break for the administrators who are trying to figure out what next school year is going to look like. now, san jose unified is a district of 30,000 students that, of course, shut down in march and conducted distanced learning until the end of the year last week. the state superintendent issued a 62-page guidebook covering sanitation which sju will have to follow. banning together on this facebook page called teach our kids. there are about 900 members and

more clear and consistent expectations for students and teachers and for the district to innovate in order to reach all levels of students. >> i would love that our district would be very slaberatislaberat collaborative with other districts and stakeholders and have parental support and collaboration. but, honestly, it doesn't make any difference. their job is to teach kids. >> now, i reached out to the district for an interview with the superintendent nancy, ahead of today's meeting, but she's not available until tomorrow afternoon. the parents should have gotten a code for today's meeting to be held webex if not find it in my facebook feed and twitter feed. by the way, the head of sonoma county schools will present their plan for tomorrow for their 70,000 students spread across 40 different school districts. we'll watch that one for you, as well. in san jose, kris sanchez,

"today in the bay." >> thanks so much, kris. happening today, city of santa clara is making sure all students get meals during the shelter-in-place. free breakfast and lunch bag meals starting at 2:00 p.m. with four pickup locations around the city. san jose unified is changing its meal program. tomorrow is the last day families can grab meals for children of all ages. going forward, meals willo only go to children eligible in limited locations. happening today, yosemite fully reopens to the public for the first time since the pandemic forced the park to shut its gates back in march. only for people with permits and visitors should not expect the same access or amenities at the park that you would normally see. overnight camping at yosemite is available but limited and the vehicle traffic is limited to half the average rate. happening today, as well, one of the largest parks in the south bay reopens. san jose's alum rock welcomes

visitors this morning, but limited parking, drinking fountains are closed and no barbecues will be allowed out there. of course, remember, your social distancing rules if you head out there today or even over the weekend. you know what, if they head out there this weekend, kari, met with pleasant weather out there because we've been dealing with some hot temperatures in the past. >> yeah. it's going to be so much nicer this weekend and as we start out this morning, we head over to the trivalley as we start out with a live look in dublin and already seeing a lot of people up and out the doors. temperatures now in the upper 50s and we can see this trend as we head into the low 80s in the early afternoon. we're going to see our high temperatures in some spots still pretty warm reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s. look at those 60s along the coast because that fog is back and that's going to really help us out this weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes and, mike, watching the commute. looks like it's still flowing

a live look at the south bay. let's check out our temperature trend here. going to be a really nice day, even a little bit cooler than yesterday as we look at our trend going from 60 to about 85 early in the afternoon. we'll talk about a weekend cool down. that's in the forecast, coming up next. and good morning to you and a very good thursday, as well. we always get our jobless claims, first-time jobless claims on thursday. we do expect fairly good numbers there. remember, we had those monthly numbers on friday. and they were much better than we expected. now, the stock market has been on a tear lately, but it's a good reminder. remember, the stock market is not the economy and the economy is not the stock market. let's go out to the future's board this morning. they are lower, pretty severe pull back as investors think about the rates of infection in instates. texas had a four-fold increase in the number of people going to the hospital since memorial day.

it's exactly what doctors said would happen. shares of tesla jumped 9% after ceo elon musk said it was time to start building the tesla semi truck. he said it is time not that they are. tesla worth $190 billion. toyota is worth around $210 billion which means tesla is coming up on the biggest car company most valuable car company in the world, despite the fact tesla doesn't make that many cars. about 100,000 cars per quarter and toyota makes about 2.5 million cars per quarter. federal reserve chairman jerome powell says he expects tough times ahead. >> this is the biggest economic shock in the u.s. and in the world really in living memory. we went from the lowest level of unemployment in 50 years to the

highest level in close to 90 years and we did it in two months. extraordinary. >> the fed concluded its two-day interest rate meeting without touching rates. they really can't go any lower. did promise to take whatever steps necessary to help the economy. too late for workers at wells fargo. the company's cfo told at a business conference significant layoffs ahead according to the business journal. the company will run as lean as possible. companies tell the state that they're going to lay off through something called a worker adjustment and retraining notification. lyft, lending club, ibm all planning to cut workers. marcus and laura. >> tough times. >> yeah, really is. all right. thank you, scott. but how about this. workers going back to work at the happiest place on earth. they're getting ready to open in southern california. of course, we're talking about disneyland. it's been closed since mid march

but starting july 17th both d disney land and california adventure will welcome guests, again. capacity is limited and you have to make reservations in advance. some restaurants and shops reopened. no word yet when the theme park will open its gate. in orlando, sea world opens its doors today after universal orlando opened last week. universal studios is owned by nbc universal, the parent company of nbc bay area. trending this morning, '80s movie fans. we have a first look at some hoof the high-flying stunts that may truly take your breath away. >> so the filmmaker shooting the new top gun sequel are revealing some of the stunt flying action that happened there on set. they actually posted this clip to twitter saying no cgi here. tom cruise made the studio agree

next couple of days. i wanted to show you one of the views that we have looking from the north barnabe peak looking at the sunrise and the fog settling out in the valleys. starting out thursday with some comfortable weather. checking out martinez and in the low 60s throughout much of the morning and then we'll start to see those temperatures climbing. we're at 81 degrees at noon and it will be a warm day, still, for our inland areas. as you make plans at noon, we're looking at temperatures around 81 degrees in concord and then as we look at 3:00 in the afternoon, we're going to see temperatures in spots like santa rosa still warming up at 86 degrees to mid 80s for the south bay. as we go into tonight, we'll see that fog returning to the coastline and that will help cool us off and also along with the system that will be dipping in from the north that could bring some of us a chance of showers as we head from friday night into saturday morning.

it does look like that rain stays to the north of us and then we see that high pressure building once again out in the pacific and that's going to warm us up, again, by the end of the weekend into early next week. we only feel a cool down for a couple days here. we're in the upper 80s today. mid 70s tomorrow. some upper 70s on saturday. that's still going to be really nice and also pleasantly warm on sunday. next week we're going to have those 90s in the valleys. mike, you've been watching the commute. anything starting to pop up out there? >> you know, we're seeing a little more traffic, kari, but no big surprises. let's take you out to the maps and show you actually a treat that popped up early in san francisco. green sensors and looking over towards macarthur tunnel. presi t presidio opened an hour early. traffic reinstated. the bay bridge toll plaza has no backup and look at the volume of

welcome back. 5:26 for you. one of the four police officers charged in the death of george floyd is now out on bail. thomas lane was freed yesterday. lane was charged with facing aiding and abetting charges. george floyd died when police responded to reports that he used a counterfeit $20 bill. his death then sparking global protests and calls for police reform. right now, at least 12 states are seeing a rise in coronavirus hospitalizations since memorial day. the ones you see here in red, that includes california. overnight, the u.s. surpassed 2 million cases nationwide. got a live look at sfo for you this morning where more

restrictions are being lifted across the country as air travel is growing. but experts say don't expect everything to return to normal quite yet. about 300,000 travelers took flight last week. well, that number is actually up, passenger numbers are still down about 80% since before the pandemic. the nfl may be considering reducing the number of preseason games for the upcoming season. the nfl network is tweeting executives have been informed that teams may play two preseason games instead of four. meantime major league baseball commissioner says he's 100% sure that there will be baseball this season. well last night the mlb held its draft and the top overall pick was from right here in the bay area. detroit tigers selected spencer torkelson and he grew up in petaluma and went to casa grande high school. he is a power hitter and can play first base, but he drafted

to hone in on a gunman who shot a deputy in the face. bob redell this morning and looking into whether this case can be tied into cases here in the bay area and also santa cruz. bob? >> right, laura. our investigative unit has learned that federal agents are investigating whether the recent murders in oakland and santa cruz county are connected to this recent attack in paso robles. paso robles police, fbi and chp they're looking for this man. his name is mason james lira. he is a 26-year-old homeless man from the monterey area. the latest from overnight, law enforcement did hear him firing off his gun. they have shut down highway 101 off ramp in paso robles area. law enforcement heard setting off flash bangs at an apartment complex in that area. lira opened fire on the paso

robles police when chp and deputies arrived to help, he allegedly shot a deputy in the face and took off. we do not know the condition of that deputy. investigators also believe that lira shot and killed a man whose body was found at a nearby amtrak station. now, as i mention, the feds are looking into whether lira is connected to two shooting deaths. on saturday a santa cruz sheriff sergeant was killed in an ambush attack that involved guns and improvised explosives. law enforcement arrested a man named steven carrillo and multiple sources with knowledge of the information believe carrillo is part of a domestic terrorist cell and a federal security officer in oakland just over two weeks ago. authorities believe the white van used for the oakland shooting is the same one they recovered in the santa cruz county attack. the driver of that van remains at large. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:34 for you this morning.

in san francisco new calls to dismantle the police department. dozens of people conferenced in to the police commission meeting and many are demanding that sfpd be abolished and be sent on social services. those calls came as they questioned the chief during the recent black lives matter protest. >> the police department has no right to be enforcing the acts of terrorism on its citizens. we need to abolish the police department or put the funds towards the community for homeless people, for education. >> the police department is expected to submit its budget propose tool tal to the mayor's by tomorrow. a sheriff deputy is under investigation for what you see happening right there in that video. you just saw that deputy pushing a black lives matter protester to the ground. this happened on may 31st. that video has gone viral on social media. says that he has opened a

criminal investigation. happening today, bay area civil rights attorneys plan to announce a new lawsuit against the city of oakland. the class action suit follows the recent response from officers during the chaotic protest downtown. attorneys are calling for law enforcement agencies to stop using tear gas, rubber bullets and other nonlethal weapons. mayor libby schaaf said those decisions were not taken lightly. the u.s. surpassed 2 million coronavirus cases as new hot spots emerged. more than 112,000 americans died. the bay area this map shows you newest one-day increases by county. 478 people have died. >> and you know what, even with the coronavirus showing no sign of letting up, more bay area, well, more of it is really starting to move towards normal. in contra costa county today sunvalley mall reopens. jackie is live in concord to

explain the extra measures taken to sanitize stores and protect all the shoppers that are expected to show up. >> well, marcus, just because these more than 160 stores are allowed to open, doesn't necessarily mean they will. if you don't believe me, check out the store behind me. nordstrom rack still fully boarded up here. the general manager said this will be a gradual rollout. a few restaurants and businesses have offered curbside pickup. but all sunvalley stores have the option to start. launching several new initiatives to keep people safe and healthy and more cleaning and disinfecting and using a strong disinfectant whenrearrai furniture in common places. california is opening up its remaining 159 dmv offices. the dmv closed all offices on march 27th and has been

reopening locations in waves since may. although the dmv director says you should be able to do almost all of your dmv business online. a small warning as counties continue to reopen and more testing is done, we're starting to see a rise in coronavirus cases across the bay. governor gavin newsom said this was to be expected and why mask wearing and social distancing is still being highly encouraged. here in contra costa county the number of new cases per day started to drop in early april but as of this week they're starting to climb back up. >> thank you, jackie. well, look, a live look for you at the bay bridge and you may want to get used to all electronic, cashless fastrack lanes because they may be here to stay. governor newsom pulled the toll takers on march 10th as the pandemic took hold. "the chronicle" is reporting no turning back on that decision

for now. the toll authority said the plan was in the works anyway but that the ultimate decision may rest in how long the pandemic continues. san francisco's supervisors are putting the brakes on muni's planned fare hikes. in april the mta approved raising clipper card fares starting in november. the move sparked backlash especially with so many people struggling during the pandemic. also led the supervisors rejecting a member's reappointment and posting a ballot measure to reign in. now in exchange, fares will be frozen forthex froz frozen for the next two years and plans to look for new e getting closer to the weekend which means fun times for some of us and, kari, i want to know. workout weather or sit in the house and chill? >> it's always workout weather, marcus.

michael flynn. >> that's right. he was president trump's first national security adviser you'll remember. he twice admitted to and pled guilty to lying to the fbi about his contact with russians, but then in a sort of a never before in history sort of twist, the justice department said even after he pled guilty, they wanted to drop the charges. now, this was even after flynn had been through the entire court process. the judge in the case appointed someone to look into that strange twist and that someone retired judge john gleason has submitted his report to the court. he says the government is trying to disguise its desire to dismiss because of based solely on the fact that flynn is a political ally of president trump. the proposal for dismissal is in his words perposturous. this is his side of the story. he was asked by the judge in the case to argue that side of it. but flynn's lawyers are going

over the judge's head. they have already gone to the appeals court which said it will listen to some of these arguments. so, again, you have a never before in history thing with a case in which two different courts are considering the same proposa proposal. the president will travel to dallas, texas, this afternoon to meet with law enforcement and african-american faith leaders. a senior white house official says it's possible mr. trump could also announce executive actions to address police violence. meanwhile, joe biden lashing out warning trevor noah the president is trying to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election. >> the president is going to try to steal this election. this is a guy who said all mail-in ballots are fraudulent. voting by mail. while he sits behind a desk in the oval office to write in a primary. >> we will link you to that interview on my twitter. you can find that @scottmcgrew.

>> thanks, scott. vice president mike pence this morning facing criticism for a photo he tweeted. it shows president trump re-election campaign staff not wearing face masks or social distancing. this is after receiving negative feedback. pence deleted the post from his twitter account. the white house has not commented. immigrants rights groups are blasting a series of new sweeping asylum restrictions that are proposed by the white house. the trump administration is laying out 150 pages worth of proposals. it includes who can qualify for asylum. new legal procedures and how asylum seekers are protected. critics argue narrowing the ways to qualify mean more rejected claims. the justice department will improve efficiency to an immigration court with a backlog of cases surpassing 1 million. now, despite the looming budget deadline, state lawmakers are still at odds.

legislatures are now working with governor newsom to try to close the sudden $54 billion shortfall that they're having. governor newsom has proposed a 10% cut in a vote approved for next monday may be largely procedural. by law, lawmakers must pass a budget by then or have their pay cut off. well, l.a. county health director says we are not out of the woods. rather, we're still in the middle of the woods when it comes to covid-19. but she knows how desperate the situation is. therefore, a lot of l.a. county is reopening tomorrow. that includes gyms, museums, recreation areas and film and tv production can also resume all of that under new restrictions. bars and nail salons are among those businesses that will remain closed along with theme parks and theaters. public gatherings are also still on hold. l.a. county recorded 61 new deaths just yesterday. the show will not go on after all at coachella this

degrees and the embark kicadero the mid 60s and north bay high of 89 today in clear lake. some spots that will be warm today, but then as we go through our hour-by-hour outlook, a chance of rain farther to the north. this is north of santa rosa. i'm thinking up around ukiah as we can see spotty showers by tomorrow afternoon and this also comes with cooler temperatures that will muchb in for the weekend. along with some gusty winds. now, our break from this warm weather doesn't last that long. high pressure builds again by the beginning of next week and so we're going to see another ramp up in temperatures going from the mid 80s to the low 90s once again. and our temperatures just up and down. so, we're going to get a nice, refreshing breeze tomorrow. along with more fog as we see our inland temperatures in the mid 70s, upper 70s on saturday and then you can see the rest of the forecast, we are definitely back to summer by the end of the weekend and early next week. mike, you've been watching the

commute. seems like it's been pretty calm this morning. >> calm but right on schedule for those builds, kari. we're looking at thursday commute. live camrup in sera shows 5:45 o show slowing and the live camera shows more volume and more sun, as well. we'll try to adjust that. you can make out those cars tapping the brakes just north of 680 on the map. you see the orange sensors there and everything else in the green zone as we get over towards the trivalley. mild slowing out of the altamont and little dip where you would expect and same thing for hayward and 880 out of san leandro. and no problems and no big delays and a build of the volume of traffic and the next 20 minutes should bring much more traffic. we will bring that back to you. happening today the pga tour is back into the swing of things with the first tournament since the start of the pandemic.

welcome back. it's 5:56 right now. today, b.a.r.t. will upitadate plan to install new fare gates into the entire transportation system. >> supposed to prevent riders from sneaking past the entrances without paying. a problem b.a.r.t. says has cost them millions of dollars each year. but now the ridership down dramatically because of the pandemic. the question is, will b.a.r.t. be able to still afford those gat gates? >> this certainly is not the b.a.r.t. many are used to. face masks are now a must and the number of riders here is down about 90%.

ridership helps fund about 60% of b.a.r.t.'s budget, so revenue is way down. last september b.a.r.t.'s board approved a plan to replace each of its 600 fare gates with larger swing-style gates like these. a move b.a.r.t. originally said would cost about $150 million. the goal is to prevent scenes like these. riders who skip out on paying cost b.a.r.t. an estimated $25 million each year. b.a.r.t.'s general manager bob powers is scheduled to give an update later today on the plan to install the new gates. but he spoke with us first to explain if the proposal can e f a health crisis that caused a financial train wreck. >> willinstall these new gates? >> the short answer in my opinion is yes. i think we'll be able to pull together a funding plan that

allows us to do that systematically and phase it in and working with the counties and our funding partners. i think we can be successful there. >> are you still thinking it will be in the $150 million realm? >> we've invested a little bit of money. not much at all into engineering and we've been able to come up with a way to drastically reduce that with a different way to go about replacing them. and a different technology, ifrt brings the $150 million price tag down to 90 million as the agency works to replace its old fare gates with new ones at each of its 50 stations. >> in terms of a systemwide deployment, when is that something riders should expect to see? >> i think you'll start seeing some deployment as early as early next, this is -- early 2021. >> b.a.r.t.'s general manager
