why the location of that rally is adding a new later to controversy. and a question on the mind of many parents. what will school look like in the fall? how one school district is preparing. "today in the bay" continues right now. a very good thursday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping an eye on that commute and in just a minute we'll find out about that. but first a look at meteorologist kari hall and the forecast for today. should be cool for most of us throughout the bay area. >> right. this is the reason why. you probably thought i was standing in front of a blank screen but this is our view in san francisco where it's foggy right now and mist and drizzle and this fog gets thicker over the next 24 hours. that will help cool us all off. as we look at our high temperatures for today, we'll still have some spots heating up
6:01 am
into the upper 80s and low 90s and, mike, tracking the commute, any new reports popping up? >> no new reports but i'll update the report because, kari, as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza camera we see slowing approaching the toll plaza itself because the volume is building heading up the incline and they may turn the metering lights on in the next 20 minutes and from the toll plaza up into the incline. everything else on the approach was very smooth through contra costa county and the rest of the bay shows no major issues and slowing for san jose still holding on. back to you. so much, mike. 6:01 right now. breaking news we've been following. we've learned that federal agents are looking into possible connections between two deadly ambush attacks. one in oakland and another in santa cruz county. and the shooting of a deputy yesterday we told you about in paso robles.
6:02 am
"today in the bay" bob redell is live to talk about both of these and the investigation meantime to look for the shooter still along the way along the central coast, bob. >> laura. within the past several hours we learned that law enforcement appears to be closing in on the suspect in the paso robles area. overnight law enforcement heard him firing off his gun. law enforcement was heard setting off flash bang grenades at a nearby apartment complex and we also know they shut off the highway 101 onramp. in the ongoing search for this man his name is mason james lira and a 26-year-old homeless man from the monterey area. the san loui obispo said he opened fire on the police department early yesterday morning. when chp and deputies arrived to help, lira shot a deputy in the face and took off. we do not know the condition of that deputy. investigators also believe that lira shot and killed a man whose

body was found at a nearby amtrak station. our investigative unit learned that federal agents are learning whether the oakland and santa cruz county is connected to this attack in paso robles. you recall a sheriff was killed in ben lomond and two others were injured and officials have arrested a man named steven carrillo. they believe carrillo is part of a domestic terrorist cell. authorities believe the white van used in that oakland shooting is the same one they recovered in the santa cruz county attack. however, the driver of that van remains at large. reporting live bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. president trump heads to dallas today to meet with police and religious leaders. but it's a rally in oklahoma next week that is really sparking a lot of controversy. "today in the bay" tracie potts
6:04 am
is live this morning with that and the effort to remove symbols of racism in washington and the nation's military basis. tracie? >> right. the president is a big no on renaming those bases and he's getting a lot of questions, too, marcus, about this rally that he scheduled next week about the timing and the location of that. president trump heads to dallas today. he'll talk police reform with state leaders and law enforcement. but it's his rally next week in tulsa, oklahoma, that is drawing criticism. >> beautiful new venue. brand-new. and they're looking forward to it. >> reporter: that rally, the first since the coronavirus pandemic is scheduled on june 19th. june teenth, a day when african-americans remember the end of slavery happening in a city where a white mob killed hundreds of black residents in 1921. the president also refusing to rename ten military bases

honoring confederate generals. on capitol hill, democrats want confederate statues removed. >> the individuals being honored by those statues, in effect, fought to keep people enslaved. i don't think that is something we ought to honor in america. >> reporter: republicans are aiming to release their police reform plans friday. some think there is a chance for compromise with democrats who want to ban chokeholds and create a national database of police misconduct. >> you can say if you don't give us that information and you don't get the money. people will change their opinion. >> we cannot approach this debate by cherry picking one or two reforms and calling the job complete. >> reporter: the first congressional hearing on reforms featured the brother of george floyd. >> justice has to be served. >> reporter: testifying and leading a march near the white house calling for justice. so, we'll continue to watch and

see what develops here in washington but around the country in the environment that we're in right now, there is also concern about police being targeted. of course, you reported on it and you've seen it there in california several times in the last couple of weeks with that suspect still at large. >> exactly. we're following that from overnight news. thank you very much, tracie. 6:06 right now. meanwhile a day of protest in oakland and mayor libby schaaf's home. protesters lit candles and held a moment of silence calling for change. earlier in the day more than 1,000 people gathered. the crowd was filled with mostly young people, many of whom demanded the city rethink its ties to oakland police. >> defund opd and get opd out of schools. >> a lot of people it's really bad and not the right way. we w here because we want him to qknow there are people who care about this. >> also in oakland, a powerful protest at lake merritt.

a sea of people lay face down with their hands behind their backs for almost nine minutes, the amount of time george floyd was pinned to the ground. well, happening today in san francisco, black student union students are holding a black lives matter march. it starts at 3:00 p.m. start at the bay view opera house and head down third street. school districts now have three weeks to get their plans in place for returning this fall. today san jose district leaders present their initial plans to parents and teachers. many of the families are already saying if it is anything like the end of this past school year, students may be in trouble. "today in the bay" kris sanchez is live in san jose with the progress report this morning. kris? >> hi, marcus. three weeks is not a lot of time left to come up with that plan not having much of a summer break at this point as they try to prepare that plan to reopen for the fall and present it to parents and teachers this afternoon. the district of 30,000 students

and one of the largest parks in the south bay reopened. san jose's alum rock welcomes visitors this morning, but there is going to be very limited parking, drinking fountains are closed, bring your own water. no barbecues allowed, as well. of course, remember the social distancing rules, as well. but, you know, as we see these parks and recreation areas open up, nice for people to get a little fresh air and little bit of cooling today, too, kari. >> yeah, we're starting out this morning with temperatures mostly in the 50s and low 60s. and we are also going to see some fog near the coastline keeping it cool there but as we look in san jose, we're starting out all clear and our temperature trend will go from the low 60s to the upper 80s again today it still will be warm for our interior valleys and a wide range in temperatures from the low 60s at half moon bay to up to 90 today in antioch. we'll talk more about this and some weekend cooling for us all coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> it's looking great's your ty

6:16 am
seeing the second wave perhaps of the pandemic. look at what wall street thinks of that. a severe pull back ahead. we may not have had a choice, but opening up the economy did exactly what doctors warned it would do and wall street seems to be realizing that this morning. federal reserve chairman jay powell says he expects tough times for years ahead. he hopes, he says, unemployment will fall to just 9% later this year. >> this is the biggest economic shock in the u.s. and in the world really in living memory. we went from the lowest level of unemployment in 50 years to the highest level in close to 90 years and we did it in two months. extraordinary. >> the fed concluded its two-day interest rate meeting without touching rates. they really can't go any lower. too late for some of the workers at wells fargo. the chief financial officer told an audience at a business

build once again and it's going to give us some hotter temperatures from sunday into the start of next week. so, our cool down only happens for a couple of days. we're in the upper 80s today. some mid 70s tomorrow as that marine layer and that fog really builds near the coast and it will keep it foggy there. inland areas will get enough of an ocean breeze to help cool us off. on saturday we're still looking pretty good and still some comfortably warm weather for the inland areas on sunday but we start to trend back into the 90s for early next week while san francisco will mostly see some 60s over the next few days. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the commute. how is it looking? >> you know, we're looking a little crowded over at the bay bridge toll plaza and windows up. we'll make sure that we don't spread anything over there as far as any disease because we still have, of course, to socially distance. but i don't know how that would apply over at the toll plaza. again, windows are up and metering lights are on. the map shows you the slower
