also, physically damaging to black people. >> every police shooting of annan unarmed black person leads to worse mental health for the entire black population in the state in which it occurred for the next three months. >> several studies show a possible association between perceived discrimination and mental and physical health one study found that black people who were stopped several times by police, were three times more likely to exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and high levels of anxiety and stress. we had a candid discussion about the toll those experiences can take. >> and, here we are, again, seeing black people, black men especially, being kill understand public. it's a spectacle. >> do you feel exhausted by the headlines? >> it's an exhaustion that should not be seen as an exaggeration it's an exhaustion, that should be seen as justified and that there is a real and a true understanding of why it's there. >> that exhaustion, the byproduct of racism that dates back centuries from slavery, to jim crow

segregation. it's a history of oppression, that still impacts black communities today. especially, when images of brutality serve as a reminder. >> how does that stress manifest what does that mean, for the black people, in this country, who were watching those videos >> it means that they have higher levels of mental health symptoms it means they have more difficulty sleeping at night it means that some of their -- their biological systems are not functioning the way that they should >> causing a collective pain but, behind it, there's still hope >> moving forward, i think we can continue to tell the truth and hopefully, hopefully, america looks at itself and doesn't like what it sees. >> we have to make sure that black people, black babies, black children, are protected. >> hope for a better future and a healthier one. morgan radford, nbc news
