tell you, it is going to be hot, hot, hot, as well. this is the third hour of "today in the bay" and we continue right now. who's ready for the heat? good morning to you. thank you for joining us i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. i'm not sure i'm ready for the heat. vianey is tracking the temperatures for us. it is going to be the hottest day of the week, we have to get ready. >> summer decided to make its arrival a couple days early and it is making for a pretty nice over belvedere. sunny skies and little bit of orange hue throughout the bay area and here's a little bit of a sneak peek of the temperature trend that we're tracking. 80s by 1:00 and eventually upper 90s in the forecast. i'll talk about that and the stretch of heat, how long is it going to last. mike? >> we're looking over here where most of the bay area looks great

as far as the speeds go. we'll take you to the peninsula, two issues continue for highway 101. we'll zoom over here. we have at the top of your screen north 101 at third. this is san mateo crash in the middle of the roadway and big rig involved on either side. and 101 at woodside and involving concrete debris in the southbound side might be the issue. san jose circling the area where we have the breaking news for that and headed right back to you. that breaking news for you this morning and new information on that hostage situation in san jo jo jose. police have at least one person in custody and the bomb squad on standby. kris sanchez is live with us and what the folks in the neighborhood need to know this morning. >> at this point, it doesn't sound like any sort of evacuation order nor shelter-in-place order for the people surrounding that home. we got pushed back but even from here we could hear police

officers calling out on loud speakers for the folks inside to come out unarmed. now, this is all developing right now still just down the road from valley christian school, if you're familiar with that. a home on san gregorio way. this started with a call for police just around 1:00 this morning. the caller reporting that several people broke into that house and assaulted the family inside. four victims were able to escape and have nonlife threatening injuries. we do know one person was taken into custody, but several others are still inside that home with several family members still. now, the bomb squad is here, which sjpd tells us is standard in situations like this. the s.w.a.t trained team. again, we haven't heard any shelter orders but we also heard some booms and bangs coming from that direction. we know that sometimes those kind of things will be used to create a diversion so that the

police officers can make entry into a home. we don't know if that happened but we have heard some of those sounds and definitely heard the sirens and the loud speakers calling for the people inside to come out. hopefully this will resolve with nothing more th. 6:03 right now. one of san francisco's major tourist destinations welcoming visitors back today. pier 39 is known for its restaurants and world famous sea lions. while we're pretty sure the sea lions never left, there will be changes in store for human visitors coming back. "today in the bay" cierra johnson joins us with what you can expect or if you have any visitors coming to town, as well. good morning. >> goyes, good morning. today a very big day and in a matter of hours things will reopen after being closed for several months. still a little early and not

much happening behind me and you can see those guards. that is really the biggest change. occupancy will start right there. now, occupancy is being reduced to ensure that six feet social distancing, particularly by the sea lions. that will be monitored through a new designated entrance here at pier 39. there are some new hours you need to be aware of. new hours 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day of the week. visitors over the age of 13 are also being required to wear a mask and you're being encouraged to use those touchless transactions, meaning those debit cards. now pier 39 says cleanliness is the top concern and they are going to pay special attention to those high traffic areas. >> so, we have restricted the number of people who are actually going to come on to pier 39. we created an entry gate so we can monitor the number of people on and off and keep track of how many people are on the property and we want to have everybody be able to maintain social distancing throughout the day. we also put tables outside in

our restaurants for about half the restaurants so you can come and eat within full view of the golden gate bridge and see our spect spectacular sights and listen to the sea lions while you're enjoying your meal on pier 39. >> i can say i am personally excited. some of the other attractions are set to reopen the middle of next month and that indoor dining will open at the end of next month. so, some big things coming here at pier 39. we're live cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> all right, cierra. good time for you to join the team. you can enjoy all the sights. bay area's largest casino is reopening north of petaluma. graton resort and casino has been closed since mid-march. no specific mask requirements for guests. the doors officially open at 8:00 this morning. 6:05 for you. listen to this.

a north bay demonstrator talking about why he jumped into the hood of a car trying to avoid a recent protest. now, this happened yesterday along saunong sir francis drake boulevard. the 16th century explorer is connected to the slave trade. that protester said -- >> i got on the hood because there were people behind me and i wanted to stop this vehicle. the vehicle just kept speeding up. >> police officers who were there did not pursue the driver and they don't plan to take any further action. a protest outside of the home of the walnut creek mayor. dozens gathered there late last night chanting wake up, mayor. at one point, protesters burned a blue lives matter flag right outside of the mayor's home. blue lives matter is a group supporting law enforcement officers. black lives protest calls for an end to racial injustice. state superintendent tony therman plans to address institutionalized racism and

bias in public schools today. it comes following his comments yesterday applauding the renaming of schools that have been named after confederate or racially charged leaders. you may recall berkeley unified school district unanimously approved a plan to rename two schools that are named after people who were slave owners. you know with so much going on right now, we want to continue a conversation we started two weeks ago. nbc bay area "race in america the conversation" devoting another hour of exploring ongoing racial divide in our country call for change, police reform and join jessica, and me at 6:30. this is a great way to continue the conversation because really how to start the conversation. one woman from the last episode that we had that conversation and she asked the question, how do i start that? how do i start that wouithout feeling awkward or possibly

racist? we're going to talk about that. we're going to talk about black lives matter and all lives matter. you can be a part of that conversation and everyone can. we are streaming this on facebook as well as our nbc bay area youtube page. people will ask questions and we'll answer those questions live on air. this is really a community conversation tonight that we're having. >> sure. it's open, it's raw and it's honest and hopefully everybody can walk away with something. i know i'm looking forward to it, marcus. >> me, too. >> all right. good deal. it is 6:08 right now. continuing coverage this morning of confirmed cases of coronavirus right here in the bay area. believe it or not they now top 18,000 and sadly more than 500 people have died. solano county added the most new cases yesterday. san mateo county is actually now moving into phase three of reopening. and they're allowing up to 50 people to gather. dine-in restaurants, casinos,

gyms also have the green light to open. in fact, nail salons there can open tomorrow. certain businesses can open right away. we caught up with one hair salon owner last night getting ready by deep cleaning. >> ready, excited. after three months, i'm so ready. eager to get back to work. >> also allowed to reopen, wineries and bars there. gatherings include outdoor birthday parties and weddings, provided that there is limited capacity and distancing restrictions. still keeping away from each other if you're headed outside for a walk today, i would imagine you should probably start pretty early today if you're able to. >> absolutely. and i want to make sure folks are prepared. so, let's give you a sneak peek of some of our hotter spots. napa is going to be one of them. the workout forecast for you this morning. the ambitious folks out on a jog. look how quickly the

quickly show you the bay bridge toll plaza where it's slower getting through this. you do have to pay your toll and better news for the peninsula. if that's where you're headed, stand by. now, over to scott. >> all right. fair enough. good morning, guys. very good thursday to you, as well. i got my phone in my hand because i got the latest coronavirus numbers. 28,393 americans were diagnosed with coronavirus yesterday. 810 americans died yesterday. i bring this up because of the stock market. the stock market's fluctuating as investors try to figure out. you know, we have the economy reopening. but then again 28,000 people yesterday were diagnosed with coronavirus. the increase in cases, the economy reopening and at least eight states setting new records. so the dow did move lower. should point out apple hit a new record that helped the nasdaq

higher. as far as explaining the increase in number and that is a natural assumption and not incorrect. keep in mind that scientists know that. they can account for that the same way that economists know that job spike in october and november because of christmas. and they're able to do what they call normalizing the data to see what actually is trending. in texas, hospitalizations are up four-fold. vice president pence says it's not true. there's nothing to worry about. the media is trying to scare you. you know, we just repeat numbers given to us by the state health department, but the vice president says, quote, the media tried to scare the american people every step of the way. these grim predictions of a second wave are no different. the president is also weighing in making this claim on hannity last night. >> it's fading away. it's going to fade away, but having a vaccine would be really nice and that's going to happen. >> one way or the other, we will find out who is right.

the epidemiologist or the white house as the weeks continue. marcus and laura, you may have seen this on twitter. a man released from the hospital who now owes more than $1 million in medical bills got me thinking about making money in a time of a pandemic. i got a hold of one of the top investors and i invited her and said, let's have an argument. let's have a debate whether it's better to make money or treat people. she saidioacan do both. ta take a listen. >> in order to have incentive for people to build new technology, there does need to be a commercial incentive there. >> kristen baker is a very good sport delving into the argument of dollars and versus doing right and how in her opinion you can do both and find the new podcast on nbc bay area podcast sand hill road available wherever you get it.

>> all right. >> perfect. i'm always looking for a good podcast to listen to when i go for my long walks. >> now you have it. >> good to hear your voice. thanks so much. we were talking about this yesterday. this cultural shift when it comes to breakfast. yesterday we told you how the aunt jemima brand is being retired. its maker quaker oats is acknowledging aunt jemima's origins are based on racial stereotypes. following that, the company that makes uncle ben's says it will evolve the uncle ben's brand, as well. the ohio state university professor, one of them says, well, the change may be modest. it's a necessary step. >> the point is that all of these racist symbols contribute to the demeaning of african-americans and the demonization of african-americans. >> people pushing for change say it's been a long time coming to recognize these racial stereotypes in our everyday lives.

>> glad to see the change. 6:18 for you this morning. and here's something good for you. a new way to keep social distancing while flying. yeah, what do you think about this. right now it's just in the concept stage. but one company is proposing double decker seating. the designer says his flat seats, they don't take any more room than current seats. and they give people more privacy and comfort. so far there's no word if any airlines are interested in taking this idea to flight. >> that would be interesting to see. get a lot more steps in. >> do miss traveling. >> that indeed. miss traveling. you know what i miss cooler temperatures, too, vianey. what are you going to do about that? >> you're going to miss them and they're going to be gone, gone for at least a week, marcus. i'm sorry. all right, let's take a look at your beautiful view over belvedere. great shot using our underground

cameras and a number of things that we consider and talk about. you'll hear us talk about this. heading into summer, that's the concern for fire danger, where is the drought monitor at. i'll get into detail on that. but your microclimate highs today because in some spots significantly hotter compared to yesterday. you thought yesterday was warm, today is going to be hot. san jose 95 degrees and check out concord nearing the triple-digit mark and not quite record temperatures. record temperatures around this time of year were set at around 100 and 105 in some spots and however that red flag warning in place for solano county. not as windy as it was yesterday into the tri-valley but still breezy enough where we're still dealing with that low humidity and a nice recovery overnight of the humidity. let's talk about the drought monitor because i was mentioning the factors that we, you know, think about heading into summer and here's a look at the current drought monitor compared to last year. the one that says now is the latest. right about 46.74%.

some sort of drought. notice a majority of that is in northern california. southern california has seen more rain. compare that to last year. only 4.32% was abnormally dry. remind you last year was the first year in seven years that california was drought free. so, i'll go into more detail on that on my series on instagram. if you don't already follow me, make sure to do that. first day on saturday 90 degrees. if you have a pool, i'm jealous. my apartment has a pool, but it's closed. if you have a pool, celebrate for me. mike? >> i think i'm just going to spray some water on the cement and just see how long it stays cool. i don't have a pool. the roadway and let's look at how things are doing and we can on the peninsula and improvement. north 101 at woodside and that crash cleared from the incident and so did the slowing. north 101 at third in san mateo and still shows some slowing and lanes reported clear and traffic flowing there. two lanes open eastbound highway

a recent death investigation. the death involving the black man whose body was recently found hanging near city hall and palm dale. this is in the high desert. last night the man's half brother was killed in a shootout with deputies and this is about 20 miles north of palm dale. authorities say he was tried to a criminal complaint including charges of false imprisonment and domestic violence. the death of his half brother was originally called a suicide and investigators are looking into the possibility of foul play. it's 6:25 right now and just into our newsroom, gejean kenne smith, the last surviving sibling of john f. kennedy has died. her daughter tells "the new york times" died at her home in new york. she was the ambassador for five years under the clinton administration. she was 92 years old. the police officer who shot and killed rayshard brooks is

charged with felony murder. rolfe shot brooks last friday after brooks grabbed his taser during a police stop and took off. brooks' widow the denew detanew are yet another devastating blow. >> what he went through. and it hurts. it hurt really bad. >> the case has reignited a fire storm of demonstrations in atlanta and beyond. rolfe is expected to turn himself in some time today. well, breaking right now, san jose police may have surrounded a home and they're now calling it a hostage situation. developments have been changing by the minute. we're going to have a live update for you from the scene coming up. and an alarming amount of new coronavirus cases being reported across california. the new steps governor newsom is reportedly considering.

upper 80s and that's what we saw. look at today. 95 by 2:00. you definite lly don't want to out about during peak because it will be too hot for that. i'll look at how long the stretch is going to last coming up in a few minutes. mike? >> all right, vianey, the bay bridge metering lights have just turned on at 6:24 and looking at the toll plaza backup. at the map we see that is the only slow down and see things start to improve across the span and lighter traffic held up in oakland. meanwhile over in eastbound 104 the crash two lanes block and a distraction for the westbound commute. that is the slowing into concord and peninsula recovers through san mateo, guys. crash should be cleared to the shoulder. back to you. >> thanks so much. 6:31 right now. we're following some breaking news for you this morning. police have spotted a mountain lion near oracle park. this is a video from the scene this morning.

police are on the scene. this is right in the area of fourth and channel streets. very close to oracle park. they've got some of the area you see there coor quartened off. there was video this week from the police department to say be on the look out. so few people out in the streets in san francisco and so many people sheltering inside, but, that has caused so many more animals, wild animals to come out and roam the area. so, i understand the mountain lion itself has been caught. we'll try to get the latest on what is going on there. and what they're going to do with that animal. 6:32 right now. also more breaking news but this time in east san jose this morning where a hostage situation has been going on for a better part of the morning

already. we want to check in with "today in the bay" kris sanchez live on the scene right now. kris, i understand there is a bomb squad out there and is there one person in custody? >> there is one person in custody and we are now going into hour six of this hostage situation. it is happening about a half mile from where we are. we got pushed back so that the officers could do their work inside that perimeter. we do have video from what has happening and it was happened at a home on center road and san gregorio way. the caller reported that several people broke into their home and assaulted the family inside. four victims escaped and have nonlife threatening injuries and one person was taken into custody on the spot there, but several others are still inside that home and they are holding those people hostage. the bomb squad is here which sjpd tells us is standard in situations like this one and the merge unit is here which sjpd

calls its s.w.a.t train team. even a half mile away from the scene where we are thisern mo m we could hear some sounds a boom or a bang or a flash bang to make entry into the home and we also heard sirens and that announcement from officers saying we had the house surrounded. come out unarmed. we haven't heard much in the last half hour. so hopefully this is resolving within that perimeter. we'll continue to ask questions and when we get answers, we'll bring them to you. >> we hope this all ends safely, thank you, kris. governor newsom may be set to make face masks mandatory statewide. bob redell is live in pleasanton and i understand a lot of the requirements are already in place in bay area. >> alameda county you have to wear a mask or face covering if you're waiting in line outside a business and, of course, once you're inside the business same goes for the employees and same

goes for people working outside. the bay area counties have face covering requirements except for solau solano where it's just a recommendation. no counties require masks when you're outside exercising or out for a walk. governor newsom is requiring an order that would make masks mandatory in every county statewide. this is in response to recent pikes of covid-19 cases that have been popping up as the state begins to reopen for business. no details on what the order would entail, but there's also no indication that it would go beyond what we are already required to do here in the bay area. as of yesterday, more than 157,000 californians have tested positive for covid-19. just over 5,200 people in the state have been killed by this virus. reporting live here in pleasanton, bob redell "today in the bay." california is reporting a record number of new coronavirus cases. the first time the state added more than 4,000 cases in a single day, which was yesterday.

we're expected to learn more today about sonoma county's next phase of reopening. according to the press democrat, today the county's top health officials is giving the green light to gyms, yoga studios, camgrounds and resorts. since the pandemic, 803 infections have been reported in that county. still no word on where hair salons or nail salons in santa clara county may reopen. there are new reports this morning the victim of a deadly shooting this week in berkeley was a student at cal. that shooting happened monday night on dwight way several blocks of san pablo. spoke with the victim's mother and she said the 19-year-old, her son, was a third year at cal. so far police are saying little about that investigation but asking anyone with information to give them a call. and developing for you right now, a hate crime investigation taking place right now in the city of oakland. making headlines this morning because ropes that appear to be

nooses have been found in trees around lake merritt. someone spotted what appears to be a noose on the grand avenue side of the lake. video of that posted with the #endracism went viral. mayor libby schaaf held a news conference condemning what she calls symbols of hate. >> these symbols are symbols of racial violence and incumbent on all of us to have that sensitivity to have that knowledge. >> a group of concerned neighbors now patrolling that area. the lake 24-7 at least through sunday. expected to sentence pg&e for the deadly fire storm that swept through paradise in 2018. pg&e ceo bill johnson this week pleaded guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter. during an emotional day in court yesterday relatives of victims addressed pg&e executives. faulty pg&e gear sparked the

wildfire. the deadliest in state history. pg&e faces a maximum three and a half million dollar fine but fire victims are also included in the $13 billion wildlife relief fund tied to the reorganization plan. well, dreamers hope that they're next when it comes to the surprise rulings from the supreme court. earlier this week you may remember the conservative court stunned pretty much everyone when they actually ruled in favor of lgbtq workers rights. the ruling on daca recipients may come down any day now even as soon as today. justices are deciding on whether the white house can rescind the daca program. breaking news, a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake just rattled new zealand. it's unclear whether the north island has felt the impact of that earthquake. you see our size eismograph her. it picked up that shaking. a tsunami warning has now been issued for new zealand. in the meantime the usgs says it does not think it will have an

impact on u.s. territory. also working to learn if there is any reported damage at this time. but that is a big one. 7.4 in new zealand. we'll continue to monitor that. 6:38 right now. vianey has a look at our forecast for today. a hot one. >> it is a hot one. i know that yesterday we had our own jolt in san jose with an earthquake, but, you know, today is a microclimate temperatures are going to be in the 90s. so, take a look at the rains that we're going to start out with. san francisco a high of about 78. so, even around the coastline it is going to be remember wawarme usual. oakland 89. that's not bad. when you look at concord 10 degrees in areas like concord and antioch and nearing the triple-digit mark. just a couple things to keep in mind because i want to make sure everyone is being safe. if you're a fan of the heat, stay hydrated and please drink

restaurants and the world famous sea lions. we're pretty sure the sea lions never left and some changes in store for human visitors. want to check in with "today in the bay" cierra johnson and she's live with what folks can expect to see out there. hopefully you got a chance to see the sea lions. >> i did. i'm new to town. i had a chance to see them from a distance last week but things here reopening in a matter of hours. but there are a couple of changes. one to be aware of. it will start when you first come in because they're limiting occupancy here at pier 39. that occupancy, of course, being limited to ensure that six feet social distancing and also some new hours. 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. monday through sunday every day. those are the new hours and any visitor over the age of 13 is being asked to wear a mask. also, touchless transactions if you're paying. they're wanting you to use a debit card to ensure that cleanliness. now, pier 39 president taylor

the biggest a accusations. for instance, bolton says trump didn't know finland is a country or that great britain has nuclear weapons. apparently it's not a very good book. here's what you can expect by the time we head into the afternoon. 95 degrees for san jose. santa cruz is going to be beautiful. 78 degrees and san francisco 78 and that is pretty warm especially around the coastline. concord 97 and not quite hitting the record temperatures although we could be nearing the triple-digit mark. we'll keep a close eye on that one. i also want to show you the latest drought monitor in case you missed it. here's a look at where we currently stand. notice 46.7% of northern california and the majority of californians and the northern portions and some sort of drought. compare that to last year around june 18, 2019 only 3.2% where we had completely gotten rid of the drought. first time in seven years. i'll take a closer look at what that means for us and the sierra snow pack and how that affects our snow supply. make sure you check that out. tomorrow we'll remain in the 90s and a great friday. another thing i want to mention, as well. pretty windy and gusty yesterday especially for the north bay mountains and east bay hills and

yesterday not too far from there, although it's still not clear if it is the same cat. also more breaking news for you this in east san jose and a hostage situation in its sixth hour. started at 1:00 at center road and san gregorio way. police have one person in custody and the bomb squad is on standby. they also say they have confirmed that several more people are being held by one or even two suspects. it's believed it started as a home invasion and four people inside got out safely. we'll continue to follow this breaking news and hopefully it will update online. and a busy morning. more breaking news this time overseas. a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck new zealand. you can see this is our seismograph picking up that shaking. now, there is no tsunami warning and no word yet on any damage. we'll continue to follow that. governor newsom may soon

make face masks mandatory statewide. that is according to "the sacramento bee" which cites the recent spike in cases. right now all bay area counties have some sort of face covering requirements except for solano and santa clara counties where it is just a recommendation. state superintendent tony therman plans to address institutionalized racism and bias in public schools today. this actually comes following his comments yesterday. renaming confederate or other racially charged leaders that have been named as schools. you may recall the berkeley unified school district unanimously approved a plan last week to rename two schools named after people who were slave owners. all this is going on and a great time to join our conversation. nbc bay area news has a special "race in america a conversation." we're devoting an entire hour to explore the ongoing racial divides here in our country. call for change and police reform. that is tonight at 6:30. jessica, gary and i will be
