6:24 for you this morning. welcome back. and there is a coin shortage in the u.s. perhaps you've seen the stories circulating on social media. >> circulating, i see what you did. what does it actually mean for you? consumer investigator chris chmura takes a look at where all that spare change is going. >> reporter: good morning. let's talk about this coin shortage and what it is not. it is not a run on banks where people empty their accounts and destabilize the financial system. that is not happening. today's coin shortage is due to the covid-19 shutdown and here is why. small businesses that deal in cash sustain the everyday flow of pennies, nickels, dimes and

quarters. most of the businesses have been closed. window-shops don't make routine deposits, banks run short on coins. the mint said it slowed production of new coins due to covid-19. it kept workers home. here is the good news, the mint stays full production resumed june 15th and the coin shortage is easing. the mint told us it is partnering with the federal reserve to ensure the health of our nation's circulating coin supply as cash retail transactions increase, the coin supply will increase as well. bottom line this coin shortage probably won't mean very much for families like yours. most of our money transacts electronically anyway. the fed recommended banks ease their restrictions on loose coin deposits. time to dig between the sofa cushions and take that found money to the bank. back to you. a new video now of cal fire crews rescuing someone stranded on the american river in auburn. this happened yesterday when a

a knife and charged at an officer. that's when the shots were fired. the victim of the initial stabbing were treated at the hospital and released. and a decision due today from president trump may have a tremendous impact on the tech industry here in the bay area. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us and, bob, i nope the president is expected to suspend that h-1b visa program. >> reporter: correct, marcus. president trump expected to sign an executive order that would halt the issuance of the h-1b visa and other temporary work visas through the end of the year. they are used to recruit high-skilled workers to work in tech companies like those located here in dublin, pleasanton and other parts of silicon valley. a lot of companies rely on these people especially since there's a shortage of skilled workers here in the bay area according to reporting done by npr.

this would not affect any workers here on visa but would suspend not only h-1b but l-1 is for those transferring a company's location to here in the united states, j-1 for professors, h-2b for seasonal workers not in agriculture. one point of contention is whether or not new au pairs would be allowed to enter the united states. president trump's executive order comes a week after the supreme court ruled against his administration's attempt to shut down the daca program. earlier this year you might recall the president temporarily suspended the green card program. he says to stop the spread of the coronavirus and protect american jobs during this pandemic. reporting live in pleasanton, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. there are rising coronavirus concerns across the nation as

case numbers have spiked. in the north bay this morning health officials are looking at one particular plant because of a spike in illnesses there in marin county. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live in san rafael with where that outbreak is happening and whether the public should be concerned. good morning, cierra. >> reporter: good morning. yes, as the sun comes up we see a lot more excitement here in san rafael with the trucks coming and going. i'm in front of the marin sanitary services. here 43 confirmed covid cases were reported, that is according to "marin independent journal. "those numbers contributing to a larger number. a record high one-day increase of cases here in california. now take a look at this, nearly 4,000 cases reported on saturday alone. the highest total since april 1st and is a 22% increase.

california also reported over 1,000 confirmed covid-19 patients are currently in intensive care. all 288 employees were tested after an initial case was reported here at the plant on june 8th. thereafter several workers tested positive in the following days. now a spokesperson for the waste management plant here says a majority of those workers that did test positive do not have direct interaction with customers although one individual that is a truck driver, that individual did test positive. we're live in marin county, cierra johnson, "today in the " >> thank you. san jose sharks and santa clara county are teaming up in an effort to get more people tested for covid-19. this week the county is opening a new walk-up testing site at the s.a.p. center. so it starts tuesday and runs through saturday. you see the hours right there on your screen. 1:00 to 7:00 monday through

friday. 9:00 to 3:00 on saturday. no appointment needed. this week santa clara county's superior court is resuming some of its services, courtroom services. the phased in reopening started last week with criminal and family justice cases. this week, starting today, misdemeanor and child support hearings will resume. next week it will be civil and traffic court hearings. all courts are operating under major health related restrictions and only allow the people required to be in court show up. respond to go a sing to the sus a teacher at laney college, matthew hubbard. he issued an apology for sending a vietnamese american student an email suggesting that she anglicize the pronunciation of her name, which is phuc bui, because in english he said it sounded like a vulgarity. school board trustees have

issued a statement saying in part, we understand the need to challenge and eliminate racism and white supremacy in all of its forms including the suppression of native cultures and languages. keep that clipper card handy if you ride b.a.r.t. because starting today b.a.r.t. is eliminating paper tickets at san francisco's montgomery street station. this is to create a more contactless riding experience. they've been doing that since last year. so keep that clipper card handy. i've had to buy a couple of them because, kari, i keep forgetting them. >> didn't keep them handy enough. people need to keep that in mind heading out. 6:37, it's going to be a warm day as we get a look at our south bay high temperatures up to 90 degrees today in morgan hill. we'll see more of the 90s through the interior parts of the east bay from parts of alameda and contra costa

counties reaching up to 91 today in martinez. it stays comfortable in oakland. mid-70s here. mid-60s along the coastline just over the hills of palo alto reaching 85 degrees. san francisco mostly in the 60s today and the north bay high temperatures anywhere from 70 in point reyes to 101 degrees in ukiah. you can see we'll have a wide range in temperatures from the coast to the inland areas. we'll talk more coming up in a few minutes and, mike, you've been keeping an eye on the metering lights at the bay bridge and elsewhere across the bay area. yeah, it's slowing on the approach. we'll talk about that in one second. we'll look at the big view. no matter where you're driving it's a pretty smooth drive. the map shows green sensors everywhere. we may have an incident, maybe a roadside fire in oakland that i'm tracking. so far it doesn't sound like any structures are involved. this is better news. altamont pass is still slow but starting to ease up and smooth

and i'm watching for a heatup in the east bay but it's because of a roadside fire reported along the nimitz. you see the volume moving very well by the coliseum. a better locator and more info coming back for the traffic. governor newsom's budget deal is making major cuts to close the gap of the state's $54 billion shortfall. newsom and the largest state union workers came to an agreement on cutting their paychec paychecks, two furlough days every month for two years. here is a political analyst and what they have to say. >> a relatively quick way to save money, much quicker than layoffs, which can take a long time to achieve. >> the budget deal goes into effect july 1st. and the mayor of nevada city is ignoring governor newsom's new statewide mask order. on facebook she posted that there's no law ordering you to wear a mask and that the

governor does not have the power to make that order. governor newsom is teaming up with others to get the word out about the masks. >> maybe you didn't vote for me. >> arnold, i voted for gray davis. >> no matter who you voted for or if you didn't vote at all it doesn't change californians look out for each other. >> look, nobody wants to wear these. >> the governor does have the power to order masks to be worn. a resurgence in coronavirus cases in california. 57 5% of inmates at san quentin tested positive for coronavirus. authorities say that an inmate at avenal prison died over the weekend. there are at least 130 inmates testing positive. at least 20 deaths in california state prisons are tied to the

covid-19 pandemic. >> sailors onboard the "uss theodore roosevelt" are taking part in a voluntary study looking at the spread of the coronavirus. hundreds of them were sickened during the outbreak in march. the news follows last friday's decision by the navy to uphold the firing of former commander brett crozier who voiced concerns about the outbreak. the white house is walking back a shocking statement from the president over this weekend that he wanted covid-19 testing slowed down. >> scott mcgrew, the white house now saying this was all a joke. that's right but the president didn't seem to deliver it as a joke and even more telling, marcus and kris is critics of the president have accused him of wanting that testing slowed down, so it's very mysterious why the president would give them more ammunition in that argument. you can decide for yourself, here is the president in tulsa

election. something president trump has said he doubts. and keep in mind when there was foreign interference it was to help the trump campaign. the russian lawyer even wrote that down in an email sent to jared kushner. it got lost in the start of the weekend, that might have been by design, someone fired the top federal prosecutor in new york. the fellow looking into things like rudy giuliani's business dealings. the attorney general says the president fired geoff berman. the president said he knew nothing about it and says the attorney general did it. either way the plan to replace berman with a white house picked person is falling through. instead, the next person to take berman's spot will come up through the u.s. attorney's office and her name, audrey strauss, she is said to be very tough. if the white house was looking to replace berman with somebody they could work with, they didn't accomplish that. we'll track everything that's happening in washington on this early monday morning. you can find me on twitter.

the finding of a noose in the garage of a black driver. the discovery was made yesterday at talladega speedway in alabama. bubba wallace recently pushed to get nascar to ban the confederate flag from its track, which some fans expressed opposition to yesterday. in a statement wallace says he is incredibly saddened by the act but says he will continue to proudly stand up for what he believes in. >> stand up for what you believe in. i love that. look, we still don't have a lot of our sports happening right now but last night the stars did return to live tv for the 2020 espy awards. so this year's awards didn't focus on the usual categories like best team or athlete. instead the hosts, russell wilson, meghan rapinhoe and sue bird called for social justice and to end racism with highlighting the black lives matter movement. one highlight boxing champion kim clavel was given the pat

tillman award for her service. she left the ring to return to work as a nurse in march amid the coronavirus pandemic. well deserved. >> so risky. high performing athletes and to take that detour is admirable. >> it's for the greater good. we want to get a look at the forecast for you today just to let you know things are heating up today in some parts of the bay area. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. what can we expect with the heat? where is it going to be? it's going to be for the inland areas. we're usually more concerned when it heats up along the coastline and in san francisco. that will not be the case this go-around especially this week as we are still starting out with some fog this morning and that fog looks to linger for the day and that will keep the city cool as well as the coastline. as you make your way inland it's going to start to heat up. as we take a live look outside

looking over to pittsburg, we're starting out with a clear sunrise as the fog is not making it across the bay there. let's get a look at how the day shapes up. as we take you through noon our hour-by-hour forecast shows san francisco will be in the 60s. to the inland east bay we're going to start to see the temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. by 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon we're reaching into the 90s in some of those spots but notice how the fog stays along that coastline and keeps the temperatures there in the 60s while the inner bay will reach into the 70s so we are going to still have some spots to stay comfortable but there will be a wide range in temperatures. one of those days where if you're going to be driving around, you need anything from the jacket to the sleeves and the shorts, you may need sandals and regular tennis shoes. just be prepared for, once again, all kind of weather across the bay area. we're going to see this pattern continue through the week as

high pressure remains in control and we're still going to have a weak ocean breeze to keep the coastal areas cool. a storm system passing to the north will increase our wind speeds and our temperatures come down a few more degrees. as we look at our seven-day forecast, in the low 90s today and tomorrow, still warm on wednesday and we'll see that heat continuing through the end of the week while san francisco will see low 70s to start out the week and warming up to the upper 70s by the end of this workweek. mike, you've been watching the morning commute. any more issues popping up? kari, it's a calm drive, and we are seeing more volume in some spots but also, remember, it's summertime traffic flow. i'm trying to gauge it because of the quarantine phases we're going through. as we look outside the map, a smooth drive for these speed sensors all around the bay. there was a fire that was reported on 880 around davis.
