nbc bay area responds to an alameda county dance studio that says it canceled competition and left dancers feeling flat footed. >> they asked chris chmura and his team for help with that event planner. >> goode morning. in march dancers from castro valley set to perform in hayward and they paid more than $22,000 to enter. then the pandemic hit. the organizers shifted to a virtual competition instead. one of the dancers told us a video conference is a poor substitute for an in-person event. the dance studio requested a refund. the organizers refused. we called and the organizer did not respond to us. a few days later the studio told us they got a full $22,564.70 refund. they reached an agreement with the organizer but they couldn't talk about it. we often hear that when they

shows you still slow 880 basically as we look at the map of the southbound side is where you see the crash. the northbound side is where you see the majority of the slowing that is your morning commute direction. we do have one this morning right there. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive outside of the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on and a look at the toll plaza coming up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new for you this morning, a man is dead after police say he tried to shoplift food overnight from a grocery store in the east bay. bob redell is live for us this morning outside of antioch police department. bob, what are police saying about all of this? >> marcus, antioch police tell us that this man, this alleged shoplifter got into a fight with an employee at the store. they're not sure if he died because of the confrontation or if he had a medical condition that caused this death. this happened at the lucky grocery store here in antioch. police say that around 10:00 last night a 34-year-old man

from antioch was trying to steal meat from behind the store's butcher shop. a 56-year-old employee caught him. some sort of physical conversation. at one point the shoplifter stopped breathing and police and fire when they arrived he was announced dead at the scene. the employee was hurt during the fight and the fire department transported him to the hospital. he is in stable condition. reporting live in antioch, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, bob. 6:33 right now. now to the coronavirus pandemic and we're waiting for new numbers this morning after the nation yesterday recorded the highest number of cases so far. there are now more than 2 million cases in the united states with 122,000 deaths. california also recorded the most cases yesterday. more than 7,000 beating the record set just the day before. there are now more than 190,000 confirmed cases in california.

now, the rise in infections are prompting the entertainment world to rethink some of its reopenings from movie theaters, restaurants, a theme park. just last night disneyland said it's actually pushing back its opening plans. today in the bay cierra johnson joins us live in vallejo while the wild roller coaster ride of just trying to get reopen again, cierra. >> good morning, yes. all in the name of safety. but six flags behind me in one week will be filled with cars because they announced they're reopening on july 2nd. as you can imagine in the midst of a pandemic it will not look like what it has in years past. the biggest change those roller coasters behind me will not reopen. it will mainly be the animal attractions. we had some video here provided by six flags. they say the park guests and employees will have their temperatures taken with thermal images and masks will be required for anyone over the age

of 2. also in order to practice social distancing, the park will use a reservation system to keep track of how many guests are in the park and these foot markers on the ground to ensure those enjoying the animals are doing so at a safe distance. in addition to reservations and wearing masks, those park leaders say they also plan to frequently sanitize some of the areas such as rails and knobs. next thursday is the day and no rides in operation. heading to southern california, as you mentioned, disneyland is pushing back its reopening date beyond july 17th. it's waiting for state guidelines before they decide their exact reopening date. disneyland along with islands of adventure has been closed since midmarch. disney did reopen its sang high with limited capacity and temperature checks for their visitors. in terms of universal studios hollywood which is owned by comcast which owns the station

recently closed their doors letting customers know that the shut down for several days just to be safe. and in marin county the buckeye roadhouse, well, they shared that same story with customers. some people are wondering if the reopening was just too soon. dr. matt willis, well, he says that he's hopeful that people will continue to take those precautions, but also restrictions won't be necessary. >> the health care capacity to manage that influx of cases, that would be the trigger for us to certainly stop moving forward in anything that we planned to move forward and, in fact, begin to reclose things that might have already been open. >> the restaurant owners say they close for the second time and they say they're ready to get back to work but, of course, safety comes first. and a san jose woman gone viral for coughing on a baby is an oak grove school district employee. now, oak grove says that they are aware of that incident and they are cooperating with authorities. that child's mother, well she

says that the woman accused her of not following social distancing rules and then took her anger out on that child. this was all caught on camera. no word if charges will be filed against the woman. well, two san jose police officers are being called heroes this morning after saving a baby's life. listen to this story. both were actually responding to a call on father's day after an 11-month-old baby became unresponsive at a home. they say the baby wasn't choking on anything and no one knew why he had stopped breathing. that's when their training kicked in and they started doing cpr. >> baby was just laying right there on the pavement and people surrounding him and we just took over the scene. >> i didn't have too much time to think. what i was think about was trying to get all my right equipment which was the cpr mask. >> they got it and they got the baby breathing, again. the baby started to cry but that was a huge sigh of relief for

everyone on scene. the officers even followed up on the call. they recently visited the boy in the hospital and they say that he's in stable condition. i love those happy stories that we can give, as well, marcus. >> i do love those. you know what i love -- >> let's take a look at the forecast with kari. wow, what a start to our day. >> yeah, it's been a pretty nice start. also cooler temperatures, too. this is the time to get in those outdoor activities as we watch also a beautiful sunrise across the bay area. here's a live look and we're just seeing a few clouds here and there if you want to get out for a hike. the early morning hours look like the best time. i think before 10:00 because after that we're going to heat up and we're looking at some mid to upper 80s in the south bay and even though there will be a breeze that's going to be kind of a hot, dry breeze. you know how that goes. we'll talk about what is with cooler wind coming in for the weekend. few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the

dined outside now dining on stretches of university starting on july 3rd just as california avenue has been shutting down between el camino real to birch street. california avenue is closed every day through july 5th, although that could be expanded depending on how it's received and it is received pretty well here. the town council will consider closing some of its streets, as well p. it will take that vote some time after 10:00. in oakland the city is also clearing red tape through its flex street program. it waives all fees and streamlines the process for permitting and restaurants that want to serve diners on restaurant and walking lanes. all communities offering up outdoor dining have social distancing and mask rules in place so when you are out and about, make sure that you cover up. now, outdoor dining is allowed in all of our bay area communities and counties at this point, but local communities are trying to figure out how it is

1.5 million americans filed first-time unemployment benefits. that's higher than estimates. this is the 12th straight weekly drop since they hit their peak this was near the beginning of the pandemic. 19.5 million americans are continuing to file their claims. experts say hiring is not rebounding as quickly as they had hoped even though most of the country is starting to reopen. it's 6:48 right now. for years, president trump touted the economy as his best accomplishment. >> scott mcgrew, he can't do that now. >> no, he certainly can't, obviously, due to coronavirus. that and a lot of dissatisfaction, according to polling with how he is handling the coronavirus pandemic from the white house. take a look at this, this is one of the widest polls we have ever seen. done by the "new york times." as a rule of thumb, a landslide is anything better than a

15-point lead. here you see a 14-point lead by joe biden. now, a word about polls. first as we know, trump did not poll well, but he's now the presidential. national polls don't reflect the way we relect a president. we go state by state. president trump is behind in the key state of wisconsin. he'll make a visit to a ship yard there which just had a contract from the navy. president trump pushing his made in america theme. we're starting to see the effects of that rally in oklahoma, as well, over the weekend. and undisclosed number of secret service agents are now in self-quarantine and an official is using the word doesn't. not all come from washington, the secret service has offices all over the united states because it's part of a federal law enforcement. some of those agents said to have come from texas. we also know now white house advance staff had coronavirus as they came to oklahoma ahead of the president.

the president welcomed the president of poland to the white house. jduda is facing re-election and he's very concerned about president trump's plan to poll u.s. troops from germany. here's our president. >> we're going to be reducing germany very substantially down to about 25,000 troops. we actually had 52,000, but we'll be moving it down to about 25,000. germany is paying a very small fraction of what they're supposed to be paying. >> as we've discussed in the past, while germany has committed to spend a certain percentage of gdp on defense, it doesn't pay nato. it's not behind in payment. after the meeting with the polish president, president trump said he actually would consider moving some of those u.s. troops from germany not back to the united states, but over to poland. we'll be monitoring the president's trip to wisconsin this morning. we'll talk more about it in the midday news and talk about it on twitter, as well. you can find me there

palo alto will reach 83 degrees and half moon bay in the upper 50s. we've seen the fog not budging from the coast, that keeps it much cooler and for the inland areas and the north bay, we're in the mid 90s today. seven-day forecast shows some mid 90s today and tomorrow. for the inland valleys and then some 80s for saturday, sunday and pretty windy on sunday and then gradually warms up early next week. mike, how is that morning commute rolling? >> kari, some folks might not be expecting a slower roll here in san jose where the live camera shows you north 101 right at 680. that's where the slowing starts and extends up towards 880 with a crash on the south been side. remember we're looking at north here. north 280 to north 87 to get around that short section of 101 with the backup. the reason is that crash south 101 at about oakland road still remains in the slow lane. scene. but no major injuries and no real ripple effects for the rest

breathing. police tried to perform cpr but they could not revive him. that employee was taken to the hospital. the california attorney general will not investigate the deadly shooting of a suspected looter by vallejo police. investigators say 22-year-old sean menterrosa of san francisco was stealing from a pharmacy earlier this month when lootings were widespread across the bay area. officers opened fire believing he was carrying a handgun but turned out to be a hammer. the death sparked protests. attorney general javier basera says they are capable of handling the investigation. a live look at six flags in vallejo this morning. on one week on july 2nd, visitors will be allowed to return. guests and employees will have their temperatures checked and masks are required by everyone over the age of 2 at all times. also, there will be a reservation system to keep track of how many guests are in the park. rides, well, they will not be operating, but the zoo and the

marine exhibits will be open. just last night, disneyland said that it's pushing back its opening beyond july 17th. now, it's waiting for state guidelines before setting an exact date. and here we are in summer already. and it's a nice start to our morning, kari. >> yes. we will see those temperatures heating up today into the low 90s. it will cool down by the end of the weekend. what's happening on the roads now, mike? >> well, kari, we still have that slowing for san jose northbound 101 slow from right here at the camera where it's starting to just loosen up in the last 45 seconds here. extending all the way up to oakland road and 880 and crash on the southbound side was a distraction. lighter traffic here, though. bay bridge toll plaza and the metering lights were turned on early because of a fender bender here and no problem on the approach and this is the only backup that's there. we look at the other folks who are commuting because, well, we are here.
