>> reporter: he was tested but not for coronavirus. a hefty bill soon followed. >> no one said anything about any costs whatsoever. they just -- they told me they were doing the tests. they didn't ask if i wanted the test. >> reporter: to some patients advocates disease a costly reminder of a flawed healthcare system. >> what other sector of our economy are we blind to no prices before buy or get care. we're being expected to pay with a blank check and have no negotiating recourse because we never knew the price to begin with. >> reporter: polls show americans overwhelmingly support price transparency but so far bipartisan backing on the hill hasn't led to long-term solutions. and efforts by the trump administration to compel hospitals to release prices are tied up in court. the american hospital association saying the plan, will at best confuse patients. it is also enormously burdensome, requiring hospitals to devote significant staffing and financial resources better used for patient care.

this morning on the first official full weekend of summer, we're going in depth on what summer vacation will look like for millions of american this is year. >> what can you do? where should you go and how to get there? nbc correspondents here, good morning. great to see you both. >> dr. torrez, we'll start with you if we can very kwk. the first question. this is one families are having conversations about as we speak. is it safe to fly? is it too soon and who should avoid flying all together right now. >> peter the reality is we're still in the midst of a pandemic. so any time you leave your house you are increasing the risk but there are certainly ways to keep it safe. couple questions to keep in mind. are you going to a hot spot or coming from a hot spot.

so be dafrl. a careful. and are you over 65. preexisting conditions. those people should only valve if they need to. necessary travel. one, make sure you wear a mask. very important and social distance as best you can. it is not always possible but try and do that. and practice hand hygiene throughout the day. don't touch your face, especially before you wash our hands or use alcohol or hand sanitizer. and bring your open food. if you bring your own food that is going to make it much safer. when you get on the airplane, couple things as well. rule 1, keep the mask on. that is extremely important. and then opt for a window seat instead of the aisle so not everybody is passing right by you, hitting you in the shoulder. and breathing on you. wipe down the surfaces. the seat belt, armrests, table tray, everything. light, fans. everything you think you are going to touch wipe down. those are ways you keep yourself and family safe as possible on the airplane while traveling.

but again think about the trip and whether you really need to take it or not. >> and when we think about possible destinations we know some states are requiring out of state visitors to quarantine for two weeks. new york and new jersey, for example. doesn't meern you have to rule out visiting though right? what do we need to know about that. >> we need to know to choose our destinations wisely. right now a handful of states with quarantine restrictions in place. hawaii, for example. they are really strict. they want a 14 day mandatory quarantine. but other states like maine and vermont are saying in lieu of the quarantine if you provide a coronavirus negative test result they are letting you skip the quarantine. these are difficult to enforce but the point is to prevent community spread and protect you. the last thing you want is to go on vacation, contract the coronavirus and then bring it back to your loved ones. check the cdc.gov website.

they have a coronavirus hot spot tracker. that is surm helpful for you to understand where you are going. are cases on the rise there, is there an outbreak, if so you may want to avoid that area. >> what are the safest plays that you can go this summer dr. torrez? >> so the safest places you can go peter are particularly outdoors. the more you are outside. the less you are inside especially with groups, less likely to contract the virus. so if you can go camping, hiking. those interest safety activities you can do outside. especially by yourself with your own quarantine. picnic kansas do the same thing because you can stay six feet apart and having outdoor games where you are not necessarily congregating inside. if you decide to road trip, to travel one thing is how you are going to do it. rv is safer than a car. the main reason is because in the rv you are not having to constantly stop at hotels, to go ahead and eat. keep wipes and paper towels handy.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you peter. there were conflicting messages at yesterday's white house coronavirus task force briefing. the first in nearly two months. dr. anthony fauci had a dire warning saying the country in his words faces a serious problem. but vice president mike pence who leads the task force defended the administration's response. pence promoted a message of recovery, even as new outbreaks forced some states to pause reopening. the vp was also challenged over recent trump political events where the president's supporters did not observe social distancing guidelines or wear a face mask. a practice the president himself suggested is a political statement. here is how the v.p. explained it. >> freedom of speech and rice to peaceably assemble is enshrined in the constitution of the united states. even in a health crisis the american people don't forfeit our constitutional rights. >> but dr. anthony fauci urged americans to take the virus more seriously.
