right now at 4:30, fire danger. the north bay under red flag warning but that danger is looming across the bay area after a few weekend scares. kari hall is tracking those hot spots for us. plus, covid crisis. the governor now ordering bars to close down again as cases spike. next, the reopenings that are now being delayed. taking a look at those danger zones we have throughout the bay area because of the red flag warning. kari? yes, in the north bay mountains we'll have a red flag warning in effect for today. it continues until 8:00 this evening, and with the very dry conditions we've seen, along with the high winds, we will have that high fire danger for today for all of these areas that are shaded in red. so these are the areas we'll have to watch as the winds possibly gust over 50 miles an hour once again for today. we will start out with those temperatures very mild, but then it will warm up in some parts of the bay area. a few of us will hit back up to 90 degrees for those high temperatures while the south bay will be in the low 80s. we'll talk about the range in temperatures and what's ahead coming up in the full microclimate forecast. mike, you've been watching the roads. any issues early this morning? the freeways are moving smoothly. i do have to start out with some very sad news out of the contra costa county area. we'll take you to our maps where you see all greens and the major

highways are at speed with minor areas for construction, but we are looking over to byron highway as you're coming by clifton court. if you know where that is, you'll know where this accident happens off the roadway. someone has died as a result of the crash and i believe they've been taken from the scene. there's still an investigation between byron and 580 as you're heading down to vasco but not on vasco. the santa rosa fire department is one of several departments in sonoma county ready to go with the red flag warning that kari was talking about. many departments have added extra staff this is video of the santa rosa fire department. they tweeted this out of the crews getting trucks ready. santa rosa has an extra engine and battalion chief ready to go tonight. it has been a very busy past 24 hours for fire crews across the bay area and beyond. those strong wins fanning flames

on the altamont pass near livermore. it started about 8:00 last night. 30 acres were charred before it was contained. it didn't stop there for the firefighters. there was a fire in lake port near clear lake area. those evacuations were needed there. firefighters spent the overnight hours putting out those hot spots. well, did you hear the sound of illegal fireworks over the weekend? most likely. it's what firefighters say caused a two and a half acres to burn in the observing hills. it happened near howard elementary school and 580. it took more than 50 firefighters to put it out. luckily no one was hurt and no but we're already seeing all these problems. if you download the nbc bay area app we'll let you know about weather conditions in your area and will tell you when a fire breaks out immediately. the chp is investigating the discovery of a shooting victim near a homeless encampment.

officers responded yesterday afternoon to a person they found shot near south king road off ramp just right off interstate 680. the chp says the pedestrian was shot in the face. so far there's no update on their condition or where that gunfire came from. >> rising covid-19 cases is prompting governor gavin newsom to order bars in seven counties to immediately shut down. add now two bay area counties are deciding to take action. "today in the bay's" marianne favro reports from campbell on why experts say that bars serve up an additional risk. >> reporter: from los angeles to kern county bars across the state are shut down. the move comes after a spike in covid-19 cases prompted governor gavin newsom to order bars in seven counties to close immediately. while there are no bay area counties on the list, the governor asked contra costa county, which had planned to reopen bars on wednesday, to hold off. contra costa county supervisors

say they'll honor that request because they have concerns of their own. hospitalizations have recently increased, and that's not all. >> we've had some concerns because our case counts have been increasing significantly. >> reporter: it's a pattern already seen in other states. on friday governors in texas and florida ordered bars closed because of a spike in covid-19 cases. governor newsom also adds santa clara county which had not set a date to open to stay closed, which they plan to do. that's a smart move says ucsf infectious disease specialist dr. peter chin-hong. >> when you're in that noise, you're shouting and the droplets that fall within three feet but shouting, screaming, or even singing you can give the droplets superpowers so they can

fly further. >> reporter: bars are often crowd, most are indoors, and after drinking people may be more likely to lose their inhibitions and take off their masks. and here is another concern. let's say a person goes from one bar to another and later is diagnosed with covid-19. it could be very difficult to do contact tracing. and we do want to point out san francisco was supposed to reopen bars tomorrow, but mayor london breed says that's not going to happen. in campbell, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. despite a spike in cases marin county is moving forward with easing more restrictions today. indoor dining, hair salons and barber shops plan to reopen. campgrounds and picnic areas were also given the green light to reopen today. however, the county did hit a pause on hotels and short-term rentals, gyms, as well as skin care services and tattoo parlors. right now there's no word on when they will be able to reopen. happening today san

francisco unified is trying to help families during the pandemic by giving away free thermometers. the school district will hand out nearly 9,000 thermometers during the event at lincoln high school beginning at 11:00 this morning. they will help families monitor themselves for possible fevers. those thermometers were donated to the district by san francisco-based public health company. coming up next on "today in the bay," pressing pause. why you won't see any ads for starbucks in your facebook feed, at least for now. and it's not the only company. plus, a legendary american western star now the subject of scrutiny. why advocates are now pushing to rename a southern california airport.

we have high winds coming through the delta this morning and the wind speeds will increase as we go into later this afternoon, especially for the north bay. we'll talk about the high fire danger and our hot temperatures that will gradually start to back off. that's in the forecast coming up. and over in byron we do have that deadly crash. it is not affecting the roadway, the byron highway through the area. you see how close it is to highway 4 and discovery bay. now folks who are traveling to the area will see activity, as i said, they're just doing the paperwork and moving that vehicle after that overnight deadly crash. slowing out of the altamont. we'll check more coming up.

good morning. i'm kate rogers at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open higher as investors continue to track coronavirus headlines. the markets fell sharply friday amid the surge in cases in part of the country and with some states opening back reopening plans raising fresh doubts about a quick or smooth economic recovery. the dow falling more than 700 points ending at its lowest level in about two weeks. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 all dropping for the second week in the past three and focus today a report on pending home sales which measures side contracts. starbucks is pausing ads on social platforms after claims facebook has ineffective in spreadin unilever, coca-cola and verizon have decided to pull or pause their ads on facebook. on friday facebook said it would

hide content hateful or endangering voting, removing an exception for politicians. when apple launches new iphones this fall they may have as much in the box as before. a top analyst says apple plans to stop including a power adapter and ear buds with the 2020 models as it tries to offset higher cost that is come with upgrading to 5g. smaller packaging would reduce shipping costs since more phones could fit into a single shipment. the phones will still come with a charging cable. back over to you. and we're going to start out with temperatures this morning in the upper 40s for parts of the tri-valley but elsewhere do have some 50s, and it warms up again today. we'll take a look at our micro climates in the forecast coming up. and, kari, we're going to go to the peninsula, a new crash. i don't think there are any injuries but we'll check on the status near where 280 meets 380 on the peninsula.

i went hiking and i am feeling it this morning. >> nice. oh, yeah, that usually kicks in the day after. it's still going to be a windy day today if you're going to be out in some of the hills in some parts of the bay area. we're going to have high wind gusts today. let's check out concord and the way our morning looks for us, it looks pretty nice with some upper 50s to start, and then as we go through the day it starts the warm-up although it will be a hot afternoon, at least we do have a few hours of some more comfortable weather. then we look at the spread in temperatures we'll have today from the upper 60s near the coast. san francisco reaching 71 degrees. we do still see some of those upper 80s and low 90s for parts of the north bay as well as the east bay. the south bay will reach into the mid-80s today in morgan hill with downtown san jose only up to 81 degrees. so we'll feel nice there but not so nice will be the high winds that will continue to gust today. and for all of these areas shaded in red, this includes our

elevations above 1,000 feet, this is where our winds will gust possibly over 50 miles per hour today. we have that along with some hot temperatures and low humidity below about 10% to 20%, so that's going to give us a high fire danger for today as we look at our wind speed forecast. we are seeing those winds as we head toward 4:00 to 5:00, anywhere from 30 to 40 miles per hour and then even higher as you go up in elevation. so with that we are still going to have the high fire danger for today but then the winds start to calm down for tonight. after that we're in for some nice weather for the rest of the week. we are going to see our temperatures inland cooling off. only mid-70s by thursday, but then it will start to warm up in time for the fourth of july which is, of course, this upcoming week. mike, you've been watching the early morning commute with a couple of problem spots already. that's right, kari. nothing really stopping the freeway traffic, but i do want to point this out because

flashing lights, you will encounter that. also on the bottom of your screen as we look at the maps there was slowing on 87, about 4:45. it cleared very quickly. we'll move on. i'll watch for any unexpected slowing there. we do have south 280 at 380. we talked about the crash. it's on the shoulder. so no activity in lanes. we'll track it to let you know if anything happens once crews arrive. it doesn't sound like any injuries. the rest of your bay shows a smooth drive to the bay bridge. the richmond bridge, reports of wooden pallets towards the westbound span. so far very light traffic. a note if you're traveling to san rafael. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new for you this morning, alameda county firefighters now believe a candle may home last san leandro. they posted these photos from cumberland avenue. the people inside the homemade it out safely but one of the family's dogs did not survive.

you heard kari mention that fourth of july is coming up this weeke weekend. legal fireworks sales are going on in cities like salinas, but you might have seen some of the stands going up already, if you've taken a long drive. fireworks sales are an important fund-raising sale for schools, charities, even sports. some people we talked to say they are an easy way for families stuck at home to let off some steam. >> it's such a small thing we can do and really we vote with our dollars and invest in our community and that feels good. that feels good. it's definitely a bonus. but knowing that, we do spend a little bit more. >> check with your city, though, because fireworks are not allowed in all cities in the bay area. fire officials warn people to be careful with fireworks if they are considered safe andand, they high. we can't say it enough, across the bay area. to the latest of the man

accused of crashing his car into people and shooting others at a walmart distribution center. sheriff's investigators say the suspect was fired last year from the job at the same center near red bluff south of redding. louis lane was let go in february of 2019. this is after failing to show up to work. authorities say that lane crashed his car into that building and then opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle. investigators say lane killed one man and injured four others before officers shot and killed him. and new for you this morning bay area charter schools received at least $40 million from the coronavirus federal relief program. the sf chronicle investigated that money after being tipped off by the group parents united for public schools and in the public interest. "the chronicle" found that 14 charter schools and chains in oakland and eight other charter schools in santa clara county received about $40 million.

at least two of those schools in san francisco received more than $600,000. some are wondering if the schools should have even gotten that money, which was meant to help small businesses stay afloat during the pandemic. new this morning the plan is to put more officers on foot patrol in san francisco are being put on hold. supervisors were hoping to get voters to approve funding this november, but as police departments here and across the country re-examine policing, supervisors are putting a pause on that ballot measure. recent events are reigniting the push to rename orange county's john wayne airport. supervisors there named the airport after the iconic actor in 1979 shortly after his death. but on orange county democratic party leaders approved a renaming resolution citing his controversial white supremacist statement in a "playboy" interview in 1971. his son had previously said the comments were taken out of context. it would be up to the current

supervisors to make that final decision. coming up, a big mistake when it comes to two bay area legends. the confusion at last night's b.e.t. awards that may have given the family of one former san francisco mayor some pause. happening now for you crews working to rescue people trapped by widespread flooding in central china, but their efforts are delayed as major roads are all cut off. floodwater as deep as five feet about a mile long section of the main road through one town trapping some of those residents living on higher floors. the torrential rains poured down about 12 inches in 12 hours. more after the break. 4:52. everyone.

it's 4:54. country singer chase rice is under fire this morning for playing a concert in tennessee over the weekend. video from rice's instagram shows a large, packed crowd with no social distancing and few masks. many others in country music are slamming rice asking how someone could put thousands of people at risk. the venue states they kept the crowd to well below the state's maximum capacity limit and also had hand sanitizer along with masks available for concert goers. two bay area legends with the same name mistaken for each other last night during the b.e.t. awards. that show honors famous people who have died in the last year. the show, as you see, showed a picture of former san francisco mayor willie brown, so they meant to show who you see here, former raiders hall of famer willie brown who died last october. that mistake was quickly fixed
