some low 90s for ukiah today. as we go through the forecast it will cool off. we'll talk about that fire danger and what's ahead coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? pretty calm right now, kari. we do have slowing. a couple spots, your typical ones, 84, drive through livermore. a little blip and then all the way over on the right out of the altamont you'll expect slowing with 580 and 205. on grant line road a crash on the shoulder will distract. i don't think lanes are blocked. heading closer to the bay bridge, the drive over is just fine. back to you. >> thanks, mike. as kari was mentioning happening now in the north bay hot, windy and dry conditions are prompting the season's first red flag warning. this warning covers parts of sonoma and marin counties. jackie ward is live for us in mill valley to tell us what firefighters are doing to make sure that everyone is safe. jackie, what are they saying?

>> reporter: marcus, those weather conditions you were just describing, plus the combination of firew a deadly combination s that's why parks and recreation areas across the bay are closed during this red flag warning. we have a list of just a few of them for you here. the sky oaks watershed, natalie coffin green park in ross, leo cronin parking lot in langunitas and mount vision road also closed. marin county fire officials warn fire could spread quickly right now which is why we should use extreme caution. there were several small fires including this one that burned about 30 acres on the altamont pass near livermore. then about 100 miles north of san francisco a fire broke out there as well. thankfully no evacuations were needed as firefighters were able to stop its progression quickly. and this brush fire in oakland

ignited because of illegal fireworks, officials say. two and a half acres burned sunday morning near howard elementary school and 580. it took more than 50 firefighters to put it out. no one was hurt and no structures burned. all of those fires plus the dry weather have a lot of fire departments across the north bay making sure that they have staffed up until this red flag warning expires at 8:00 tonight. jackie ward, nbc bay area. >> thank you very much, jackie. it is 5:02 right now. developing right now new coronavirus cases are popping up across our nation. in the meantime president trump is reacting to news russia put a bounty on u.s. troops. i want to check in with "today in the bay's" tracie potts. she joins us live from washington this morning with the latest on the developments in these two really big stories. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: laura, good morning. let's start with coronavirus because even though the u.s., as

large as we are, just a fraction of the world's population, we now have a quarter of the world's coronavirus cases, and that number is growing. the u.s. now has 2.5 million coronavirus cases with new records in florida, south carolina, nevada. >> we are one day closer to the day we put this pandemic in the past. >> reporter: vice president pence hit hot spots this week. governors are at odds over how to handle it. >> i'm now afraid of the spread coming from other states. >> we can't be putting restrictions on each other across the country. >> reporter: the trump administration facing tough questions about whether it's safe to reopen and why there's been no second stimulus to help americans without jobs. >> it's time for this administration to take this seriously. >> reporter: and russia. president trump denying a "new york times" report that he knew back in marcia sha put a bounty on u.s. troops in afghanistan.

>> it is pretty remark tbl the president is going out of his way to say he hasn't heard anything about it. >> reporter: russia denies they paid militias linked to the taliban to hunt down and kill american soldiers. now president trump is tweeting that this didn't reach him because he didn't know about it because the intelligence community couldn't verify the information. they didn't think it was credible. the white house still trying to verify if the bounty was ever paid and new this morning we have confirmed that lawmakers are getting a briefing about this some time later today. back to you. >> all right, tracie potts, thanks so much. new overnight four gunmen are dead after an attack on the pakistani stock exchange. it killed at least two people. it happened early this morning in the capital city of karachi. police say the attackers used grenades and heavy firearms and

security forces quickly responded. security forces are still looking for those attackers. so far no one has claimed responsibility. >> continuing coverage of our coronavirus here in the bay area now with nearly 23,000 confirmed cases. 568 people have died. more than 500 new cases reported over the past two days. developing on the peninsula, another case of someone going too far, playing on people's serious fears about catching this deadly virus. security video showing a woman standing at a bar purposely coughing on a bartender. this happened about ten days ago at st. james gate in belmont just after bartenders told the woman to follow social distancing rules. management at first held off from releasing the video and informing police but eventually decided that other businesses deserve the fair warning about any customer who might do this. >> we want people to come here, sit down and eat and have the

opportunity. nobody wants to be locked up again. >> police came by yesterday, although so far the bartender has not decided to press any charges. in a similar incident at a san jose yogurt shop police say that a woman coughed on a toddler in a stroller. since then the oak grove school district has identified the woman in that incident as one of its employees and says an investigation is ongoing. happening today the accused golden state killer is expected to enter a guilty play at an unprecedented venue. prosecutors have used dna evidence to tie 74-year-old joseph deangelo to 12 murders and at least 45 rapes and more than 120 burglaries. the crimes happened acr1970s ans and included up to a dozen attacks in three bay area counties. deangelo will appear today

inside a sacramento ballroom to accommodate the victims' relatives of 150 victims -- they are expected there. 5:06. switching gears now a warning if you plan to visit salmon creek lagoon. there is an algae bloom going on. health officials are posting signs, caution signs, for everyone to see at the lagoon and, of course, it could be a very busy area with the fourth of july holiday right around the corner. beginning today b.a.r.t. will accept only clipper cards as a form of payment. more contactless experience during the pandemic. b.a.r.t. has been phasing out the paper tickets since last year. this morning firefighters in the north bay are on high alert. this is a live look at san rafael in marin county. strong winds, dry conditions potentially creating a dangerous

situation there. certainly on the watch there. kari has a look at our temperatures. at least we'll get some cooling later this week, right? >> yes, and it's going to be a nice week ahead. we do just have to make it through the hot temperatures today along with the red flag warning. as we look at our current wind speeds we are seeing the winds rushing through the north bay, the mountain gaps, and the upper elevations we are seeing some of those high winds, but we are going to also be watching out for the fire weather conditions, that's high winds and low humidity and at times for some of our upper elevations above 1,000 feet we could see the winds reaching 50 miles per hour, very much like yesterday evening, so any flames could be fanned very rapidly for spreadh. as we look at our wind speed forecast, we're looking at winds starting out at about 15 to 20 miles an hour, but, once again, some of the upper elevations may see some gusts over 50 miles per hour especially this afternoon.

winds calmed down later this evening as that red flag warning will be allowed to expire. we'll be watching out for those conditions today. mike, you've been watching the roads. any new issues popping up? >> we have a little bit of slowing out of the altamont and now it's moving over to 84 and that's not a surprise but it is what some would call a vacation week with the fourth of july going on saturday. we do see a smooth drive, though. the blip at the bottom is concerning me. 85 north, the 101 north coming off 85 and i'll check on that again. nothing that's been reported. what has been reported is construction southbound 880 around 16th and also a fender bend earp juer just before jack more my concern. a live look shows you there are no problems as we take a look. the bridge has had no problems for travel times and a live look shows you the volume of traffic is quite manageable. back to you. thank you very much. 5:09. despite cases spiking across the

more degrees from here. we'll talk about what's ahead with the wide range in temperatures and the fire danger up next. and a live look outside shows you the san mateo bridge also moving very smoothly. as we take a look out the taillights away from us traveling to the peninsula, there are no problems but the volume is starting to pick up a bit over the last few minutes. we'll track that and an update for what i found in the south bay. well, good morning and a very happy monday to you as well. a new electric pickup truck goes on sale a little bit more than two hours from now. it is called the badger and it's from a company called nikola. here is a closer look at it. it's more like a traditional pickup truck than tesla's cyber truck. reservations as low as $250 and they are refundable. that's important because we haven't even seen a prototype in real life. they have yet to build a factory or contract out the work.

>> i love to see when their powers come into play. that's always an interesting thing. >> i wonder which one is kari hall's favorite. >> i have no idea. >> we're picking for you. storm. >> okay, thank you. i don't know any of the names. let's check out the forecast as we get a live look outside at the bay bridge, we are starting out with no fog here and we are also going to see a little bit more sunshine in the city as we see our temperatures right now in the upper 40s in the tri-valley. we have some upper 50s in concord. now where we are seeing the higher winds -- heading over to livermore we look at the high temperatures today. yeah, for some of us it will be hot, reaching 90 degrees in concord and antioch as well as ukiah today. for santa rosa we're reaching up to 88 degrees.

oakland will be in the upper 70s. some low 80s for parts of the south bay and the peninsula. going through the forecast the main concern will be that high fire danger and elevations above 1,000 feet in parts of the north bay. the high fire danger today and winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour. we're looking at still no changes in our weather pattern. we're getting now still an offshore wind flow. we'll get some cooler air coming in for the rest of the week. as we look at our seven-day forecast today the warmest day by far as we'll start to cool down at least over the next several days. as we get closer to the fourth of july it's going to heat back up once again to the mid-80s but

no extreme heat here at least for this week. mike, you've been watching the morning commute. how is it looking right now? it's pretty calm, kari. the south bay has had a couple of confusing blips on there. let me just show you. we look at the map, green, pretty much everywhere except for your usual suspects where we talked about that slowing i saw from north 101. no incidents either but that slowing continues to kind of move around. it looked like it may be starting to clear up so there might be a couple of vehicles moving through the area, larger ones moving slower. you notice 87 right where it says san jose down at the bottom of the screen we saw a little bit of slowing there. traffic is very light. even a couple slower moving vehicles that will skew the data. we'll track that and we track the build out of the alat this month. the crash is on the shoulder slowing there as well as out of livermore and sunol.

the four minneapolis police officers charged in the death of george floyd will appear in court. derek chauvin, the officer seen with his knee on his neck, is facing second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. he'll appear on video. the other three officers are expected to be in court. floyd's death, of course, has sparked protests across the country and calls for police reform. developing for you this morning with a standing ovation, mississippi the state, lawmakers there have overwhelmingly approved a bill to change the state flag. this is containing the confederate emblem. shortly after yesterday's vote workers at the state capitol in jackson took the flag down for the day. they called the decision long overdue but the move angered protesters outside the capitol building. >> i always thought that mississippi needed to make sure we had a heart and a soul and today we did. >> i love this flag. i believe it's a good representation for the state of mississippi, whether you like it or not. >> that bill calls for the

>> watching out for the red flag warning, all of these areas in the north bay above 1,000 feet will have that high fire danger. we have it shaded in red. we get out the door starting out this morning in the south bay, nice sunrise and we're going to have a comfortable afternoon. we don't see a lot of changes, as we go through the week we'll talk about that. how is it looking for the commute? we take a look at the map, bottom of your screen and the temperature we have this big slowdown north 101 from the 85 split. chp reports those incidents right there in another report area where we have a crash north 101, two lanes are blocked right now.

we have to move a couple vehicles and a possible traffic break. we're track that ing had ining. traffic volume starts to build right where we expect right on time. we'll see if that's held up a little bit. it might hold steady. back to you. as kari was mentioning a red flag warning in effect in the north bay and santa rosa firefighters are ready to go. crews getting their trucks ready. santa rosa also has an additional engine and battalion chief ready to go until 8:00 tonight. go of newsom now ordering bars in parts of southern california and a big part of central california all to close. in the bay area the governor is also making the same

recommendations for santa clara and contra costa counties as well. bob redell joins us to talk more about this. already in santa clara county they shouldn't be open. >> reporter: bars were supposed to be opening up in walnut creek and other parts of the county but it's our understanding the county will hold off and the same in santa clara county. they didn't have a reopening date. cases have spiked throughout the state. bars have been ordered to shut down. here in contra costa county hospitalizations have increased 42% and the number of cases has also increased and not just because of increased testing, the health department believes it's a sign of increased community spread. that's why contra costa county supervisors will honor the governor's recommendation to keep bars closed.

bars are often crowded, most are indoors, and after drinking people are more likely to lose their inhibitions and take off their masks. >> usually the virus travels on the droplets that fall within three feet but when people are shouting screaming or even singing you give them superpowers so they can fly further. >> reporter: in san francisco businesses like hair salons, museums and the zoo were supposed to be allowed to open today. the mayor of san francisco delayed the reopening after that city recorded 103 new covid-19 cases the day before. reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." despite a spike in cases marin county moving forward with

easing some restrictions today. indoor dining, hair salons and barber shops will be allowed to reopen. campgrounds and picnic areas were also given the green light. the county did hit pause on hotels and short-term rentals as well as gyms, skin care services and tattoo parlors. there's still no word on when they'll be able to reopen. happening today in san francisco schools are trying to help families during the pandemic by giving away free thermometers. so the school district will hand out 9,000 thermometers during an event at lincoln high school beginning at 11:00 this morning. they will help families monitor themselves for possible fevers. the thermometers were donated to the district by san francisco-based public health company. chp officers responded yesterday afternoon to a person they found shot near the south king road off ramp.

chp said a pedestrian had been shot in the face. no update on their condition or where the gunfire came from. july 4th less than a week away. while most are illegal in the bay area, cities like salinas are counting on fireworks to raise money. you may have seen the stands already. fireworks sales are an important fund-raising for schools, charities, even sports. some people we talked to say fireworks are an easy way for families who are stuck at home right now to let off some steam. >> it's such a small thing that we can do and really just, you and invest in our communities. that feels good. it's definitely a bonus to everything else. knowing that we do spend a little bit more. >> make sure you are safe. fire officials are warning people to be careful with their fireworks even if they are

considered safe. the fire danger is high. two legends with the same name are mistaken for each other during the b.e.t. awards. they honored people who have died in the past year but showed this picture of willie brown. they meant to show the picture here, oakland raiders hall of famer willie brown who died back in october. the mistake was quickly fixed for the replay. while we missed the raiders legend. at 86 mayor willie brown is alive and well. today the national park service is reopening muir woods, the hiking spot will have visitors back in beginning at 9:00 this morning. face coverings are not required but encouraged. park tours are canceled just like before the pandemic you'll still need a reservation to park. the parking lot will be capped at 50% capacity. helping to reduce some of those

the east bay in walnut creek. we'll see the temperatures in the mid-50s to start out this morning and by noon in the upper 70s. it will continue to heat up as we get ready for some spots to reach into the low 90s. we'll see that in parts of the inland east bay as well as the north bay. san jose will only reach 81 degrees and low 70s in san francisco. we'll talk more about the high winds and also that red flag warning. what's the update? >> we're talking about the south bay. we talked about that volume getting ready to build and we do see it starting to build. it's a couple minutes late and i'll tell you why. normally we would see traffic tap their brakes here. you see that over the top of the screen. the map shows you that's where the arrow is and where we will see a build over the next few minutes.

right now at 5:43 a look at our temperature trend for concord as you get ready to head out the door. some upper 50s here but warming up into the low 80s and those high temperatures reaching near 90 degrees today. it's still going to be hot, and we'll talk more about this and the high fire danger for the north bay coming up.

and so while we're on the lookout for that we're watching out for any major changes in the roadways not just yet. the approach to the area shows a smooth flow of traffic coming into our area. things are improving. >> the man accused of crashing his car into a group of people and then shooting others in northern california. sheriff's investigators say that suspect was fired last year from the same center. authorities say that lane crashed his car into that building and then opened fire. they say he killed one man before officers shot and killed him.

firefighters believe a candle may have sparked a fire in san leandro. this is near farnsworth street. the people made it out safely but sadly one of the family's dogs did not survive. >> bay area charter schools received at least $40 million from the federal coronavirus relief program. they investigated the money after being tipped off parents united for public schools and in the public interest. "the chronicle" found 14 chains and eight in santa clara county received about $40 million combined. some are wondering if the schools should have even received that funding which is meant to help keep small businesses afloat during the

pandemic. the plans to put more officers on foot patrol are being put on hold, "the examiner" is reporting supervisors were hoping to get voting approved. but as police departments here and across the country are examining policing supervisors are putting pause on that ballot measure. president trump will meet to discuss pulling troops out of germany. >> many are against this idea. many people in germany are against it as well. we rather suspect they are all for it. mark esper will discuss the president's plan to remove the troops in germany. the president says it's retribution for not paying its fair share to nato. germany does not reach its

minimum on defense spending but is not behind. that sort of thing doesn't exist and down playing a report confirmed by "the washington post" that the russian intelligence is paying a bounty on the deaths of coalition troops. president trump says he never saw those reports and they were unfounded. they were never briefed. vice president pence was in hard-hit texas over the weekend where he urged texans to wear a mask as they deal with infections higher than our worst days under shelter. >> as we think about the challenges, the loss of more than 125,000 of our countrymen, the grief of those families, we think of those still struggling with this disease today. >> the vice president's speech

take a look at this view, looking at the san pablo reservoir this morning. we do still have these conditions that we're going to have for parts of the north bay as we look at our red flag warning that will continue for all of these red areas that we are shaded and in the north bay the high winds that will continue as we go into the rest of today. now here we are looking at the wind conditions we'll see today. those winds at about 25 to 30 miles per hour but then as you go up for the higher elevations we may have high wind conditions as we go into the rest of the day but then the winds start to calm down later today. here is a look at our high temperatures for today. some mid-80s for parts of the south bay.

the north bay will be warm and also as we go into the rest of the week. it warms up once again as we head to the fourth of july. mike, anything looking like we're starting to see a slowdown for the roads this morning? >> yes. let me let my visual album tell the story here. a little bit of slowing by the bay bridge toll plaza. we see a color change from green to orange but we don't see a big change as far as the view goes. slowing out of the altamont pass. recovery in the south bay. a crash cleared. now we see slowing as you head up to capital expressway. it has not been a problem. we will see that volume build. it's a little delayed there. back to you. >> thanks, mike.
