meteorologist kari hall with that beautiful sun rise behind you. >> bright sun rise in san francisco this morning as we get a look at the bay bridge. not so much fog as we start out on this monday morning. as we head to the north bay a lot of red here as we get ready for the red flag warning once again, high winds picking up with low humidity along with gusty winds. i'll talk more about this and what it means, that red flag warning coming up. any new issues coming up for drivers? >> unexpected at the bay bridge. take a look today. now we have metering lights turned on at 5:54. there was a quick build. no problems on the approach or the span. back to you.

>> we heard kari just mention this, happening right now hot and windy, dry conditions. "today in the bay's" jackie ward is live for us. what are firefighters telling everyone to do? >> reporter: it's the dry conditions you were talking about with the weather and the use of fireworks that can make a deadly combination this time of year, of course, with the july 4th holiday coming up. that's why a lot of parks are closed because of the red flag warning. we have a list to share with you, just a few of them. natalie coffin green park in ross, leo cronin in langunitas and mount vision road in inverness. marin county fire officials warn

fire could spread quickly which is why we should all use extreme caution. no structures were threatened. a fire broke out. thankfully no evacuations were needed. firefight wrers abers were able the progression. illegal fireworks, two and a half acres burned early sunday morning near howard elementary school and 580. it took more than 50 firefighters to put it out. no one was hurt and no structures burned. all of those reasons including the red flag warning is the reason a lot of fire departments have staffed up their departments to make sure they can be fully prepared. that red flag warning is in effect until 8:00 tonight. jackie ward, "today in the bay."

thank you very much, jackie. now back to washington, d.c., this morning where tracie potts joins us live. tracie, a lot of things to discuss on capitol hill this morning. including the surge in covid cases we're seeing across the country plus a possible rise in tensions in russia. tell us all about it. >> reporter: right, laura. we'll talk about both of those because they're both big stories in d.c. today. covid-19 because even though the u.s. is a fraction of the world's population we now have, as of this morning, a quarter of the world's cases and the numbers are greg. are growing. the u.s. has 2.5 million cases of coronavirus with new records in florida, south carolina, nevada. >> we are one day closer to the day we put this pandemic in the past. >> reporter: vice president pence hit hot spots this week. governors are at odds over how

to handle it. >> i'm now afraid of the spread coming from other states. >> we can't be putting these restrictions on each other across the country. >> reporter: the trump administration facing tough questions whether it's safe to reopen and why there's been no second stimulus to help americans without jobs. >> it's time for this administration to take this seriously. >> reporter: and russia. president trump denying a "new york times" report that he knew back in marcia sha put a bounty on u.s. troops. >> the president is going out of his way to say he hasn't heard anything about it. >> reporter: russia denies they paid anyone to hunt down and kill american soldiers. now president trump was credible. that's why it didn't get to him, it never landed on his desk, he says, despite "the new york times" reporting and we've

learned that congress is getting an update. some lawmakers are getting an update about what the government knows. that will happen today. back to you. >> all right, we'll be listening for that, tracie potts live from washington, thanks so much. new overnight four gunmen are dead after an attack on the pakistani stock exchange that killed at least two people. it happened early this morning in the capital city of karachi. police say the attackers used grenades and heavy firearms and security forces quickly responded. security forces are still looking for additional attackers. so far no one has claimed responsibility. the bay area has nearly 23,000 coronavirus cases and 568 people have died. over the past twoported. worldwide more than 10 million cases and half a million people have died.

another case of someone going too far. security video showing this woman standing at a bar purposely coughing on one of the bartenders. this happened at st. james gate in belmont and just after bartenders told that woman to follow those social distancing rules. management at first held off releasing the video but decided other businesses deserve fair warning about any customer who might do this. >> we want people to come here and sit down and have an opportunity. no one wants to be locked up again. >> police came by yesterday although so far the bartender has decided not to press charges. police say a woman coughed on a toddler in a stroller. oak grove school district identified the woman as one of their employees and says that investigation is ongoing.

>> the accused golden state killer is set to enter a guilty plea. prosecutors have used dna evidence to tie 74-year-old joseph deangelo to 12 murders, at least 45 rapes and more than 120 burglaries. the crimes happened across california in the 1970s and '80s and include up to a dozen attacks in three bay area counselees. b.a.r.t.'s civic center station will be the latest to accept only those clipper cards as payment partly to create a more contactless riding experience during the pandemic. b.a.r.t. has been phasing out the paper tickets since last year. firefighters in the north bay right now are on high alert.

strong winds and dry conditions potentially creating a dangerous mix and a red flag warning to talk about as well, kari. it was so windy yesterday especially during the evening and the winds have since subsided but will pick up again today. that's the reason it will continue. for the north bay, all of these areas shaded in red, this is where the winds above 1,000 feet may gust over 50 miles an hour today. you have that along with hot temperatures, very low humidity and those high winds and we'll continue to seep t the red flag warnings continue. most of our wind speeds will be between 55 and 35 miles per hour. then some of the high gusts will continue as we go into today. we start to see the winds calming down a bit and will see

much better fire conditions for the rest of the week. mike, any issues that are starting to come up now? no, in fact, we're seeing better flow. look at the live camera. i was concerned about that burst of traffic after the earlier crash released around blossom hill but it's held steady and what you see there is what you see for the area i've marked on the map with an arrow. no problem for silicon valley. the bigger view at the bay shows no real problems anywhere. mild through livermore and to sunol. a live look shows you despite that nice green flow around the bay, metering lights were turned on before 6:00 a.m. it is 6:10. coming up next on "today in the bay" starting this week airlines will start to fill their planes. the impact for you and your family and what you need to know

red, a red flag warning that will go into effect and continue until 8:00 this evening as our winds could gust up to 50 miles per hour. it's going to be very warm and dry in some spots. we're up to 90 in concord and antioch. livermore up to 86 for a high temperature today and also 86 degrees in morgan hill. san jose will reach the low 80s and san francisco will be in the low 70s. >> to the north of us giving us the high winds and then the rest of the week we'll look at milder weather a little bit more of an ocean breeze but then by the weekend just in time for the fourth of july there's a lot of people who may be firing off those fireworks will have to watch out for fire danger.

some mid-70s here but then warming up as it will definitely feel like summer going into the holiday week. san francisco coastal areas will stay much cooler. mike, you're keeping an eye on the morning commute. any new issues popping up? first the plaza. i've been talking about this. it seems like a big deal but it's not. the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights turned on since the pandemic and the quarantine. i don't know why, though. they were turned on just before 6:00. you see the lanes are moving well as far as for the metering lights being on. maybe someone turned him on earlier because they see something happening on the east shore freeway that never develops into a problem. whatever the case, not a big deal.

6:24 right now. happening today the four minneapolis police officers charged in the death of george floyd will appear in court today. derek chauvin, the officer seen in the video with his knee on floyd's neck is facing second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. he'll appear on video. the other three are expected to be in court. floyd's death, of course, has sparked protests around the country and calls for developing for you this morning with a standing ovation mississippi lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved a bill to change the state flag containing the confederate emblem. shortly after yesterday's vote workers at the state capitol in jackson took the flag down for the day, but not everyone supports that move. >> i always thought that

mississippi needed to have a heart and soul and today we did. >> i love this flag. i believe it's a good representation to the state of mississippi, whether you like it or not. >> that bill calls for the current flag to be retired within 15 days and a new redesign approved by voters. 6:26 this morning. and new for you. we're learning working from home is becoming a new normal for a lot of people, and data is showing nearly a third of students don't have the tools to keep up with their studies. >> that's right. it's very concerning. about 16 million students don't have basic internet services, computers, or any device that they really need to attend these online classes. and it's not just students. >> nearly 400,000 teachers in the country, about 10% of our teachers in public schools across the country, do not have adequate devices and connectivity to teach correctly. so it's not just the students.

hope everyone had a great weekend. we're starting out with a red flag warning. how concerned should we be? >> this is for the north bay where we see upper elevations getting high winds again today. we have the areas shaded in red included in the red flag warning and it goes into effect, continues until 8:00 this evening when we will have some of the high winds gusting today. as we look at our current wind speeds mostly at about 15 to 25 miles per hour coming through the delta and the north bay we'll see the high winds continue to increase again today with the hot temperatures and some of the valleys. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now? it's looking pretty good. you notice the movement, there's good movement in the lanes.

that's a good sign. no major delays as we look at your travel times getting out of the area or into the area to the bay bridge. overall the map only shows slowing out of the altamont pass. your usual suspects. 6:32 right now. shut down again. governor newsome ordering bar owners to shut their doors to prevent the spread of covid-19. he's also recommending the same for bars in santa clara counties and contra costa counties. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from walnut creek this morning. it'll be interesting to see if the counties comply. most likely, i assume they will. >> reporter: that's our understanding as well. bars were supposed to open up in walnut creek this week, laura. as i mentioned our understanding is the county will heed the

governor's advice. santa clara county hasn't announced a reopening date yet for its bars but public health leaders say they will wait, too. as covid-19 cases have spiked throughout the state, the governor has ordered bars from los angeles to kern county to shut down. they've increased 42% and the number of cases has already increased and not just because of increased testing. a sign of increased spread and that's why county supervisors are expected to honor them and keep the bars closed. they are often crowded as you're well aware. most are indoors. after drinking people are more likely to lose their inhibitions and take off their masks. >> when you're in noise, you're shouting and screaming and the virus travels on the droplets but in a shouted, screaming or

even singing you can give the droplets superpowers so they can fly further. in san francisco businesses like hair salons, barber shops, museums and the zoo were supposed to be open today but on friday the mayor there delayed the reopening after the city recorded 103 new cases the day before. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you for the latest there. now despite a spike in cases, marin county is moving forward with easing more restrictions today. indoor dining, hair salons and barber shops will be allowed to reopen. campgrounds and picnic areas were also given the green light. however, the county did hit pause on hotels and short-term rentals, gyms, skin care services and tattoo parlors. right now there's no word on when they'll be able to reopen. happening today san francisco schools are trying to help families during the

pandemic by giving away free thermometers. the school district will hand out nearly 9,000 of those during an event at lincoln high school beginning at 11:00 this morning. now this will help the families monitor themselves for possible fevers. the thermometers were donated to the district by san francisco based public health company. developing in the south bay someone was found shot near a homeless encampment. chp found a person shot the pedestrian had been shot in the face. so far no idea where the gunfire came from. july 4th less than a week away. now you may have seen the stands already. fireworks sales are an important fund-raising sale for schools,

charities, even sports. some people we actually spoke with say that fireworks are really an easy way for the families stuck at home to let off some steam. >> it's such a small thing we can do and really we vote with our dollars and invest in our community and that feels good, that feels good. it's definitely a bonus to everything else. but knowing that, we do spend more. >> the fire officials are warning people to be careful with the fireworks even if they are considered safe and sane. fire danger is high, of course, across the bay area. new for you that morning alameda county firefighters now believe a candle may have sparked a fire that damaged two rooms in a home last night in san leandro. they posted these photos interest cumberland avenue near farnsworth street. all the people inside made it out safely but, sadly, one of the family's dogs did not survive. today the national parks service is reopening muir woods,

the popular hiking spot will let visitors back in starting at 9:00 this morning. now face coverings are not required but certainly encouraged. hikers need to keep their social distance. park tours are canceled. you will still need a reservation to park and the parking lot will be caps to represent reduce crowds. so head out early if that's where you're planning on going today. pretty nice temperatures across the bay area. we are going to have still some warm temperatures for the inland areas. if you're in muir woods, a comfortable day. we're not going to see too much of a warm-up today, we're going from 60s to the low 80s which is a little bit above normal. compared to the weather we've had recently not bad at all. we see a spread upper 60s to the

coast, low 70s inland, in san francisco, i should say. upper 70s for oakland today and even up to 90 degrees in the inland east bay and north bay. we're keeping an eye because of the fire danger and i'll talk more about that coming up. mike, what's happening right now for the commute? well, it's almost as mild as i thought it was going to be. remember, we have fourth of july observance on friday. some folks shifted around their vacation days. we do see light volume. a couple of sloewings. out of vallejo for 37. the bay bridge looks like it's slowing. as we zoom in the bay bridge. that's where we see slowing for the nimitz, a little unusual there as well. the live look will show you past the coliseum those headlights coming toward us are southbound and there may be something going

and rude, and it's really sad to see grown-up people doing childish things like that. >> the owner says he's going to lose thousands of dollars but says it's just not worth the trouble. 6:45 right now. president trump will meet with his defense secretary today to discuss pulling thousands of u.s. troops out of germany. >> scott mcgrew, many in the pentagon are against this idea. yeah, and many in germany are against it as well. we don't know exactly what russia thinks about it but we rather suspect they are for it. defense secretary mark esper will meet with the president today to discuss the president's plan to remove several thousand troops from germany. the president says it's retribution for germany not paying its fair share to nato. germany does not reach its promised 2% of gdp on defense spending but doesn't itself.

president trump also downplaying a report that was in "the new york times," later confirmed by "the washington post" that russian intelligence was paying the taliban a bounty to kill coalition forces including u.s. forces. the president says he was never briefed on that because those reports are unfounded but already congress is talking about an investigation into that. vice president pence was in hard hit texas over the weekend where he not only wore a mask. he urged people to do the same as america deals with infection numbers far higher than our worst days under shelter. >> as we think about the challenges, the loss of more than 125,000 of our countrymen, the grief of those families, we think of those still struggling with this disease today. >> the vice president's speech at a church where a large choir

half moon bay at 68 and 8 in santa rosa. now some of us will continue to heat up today and some spots reaching the low 90s. for the east bay as well as parts of the north bay, in the south bay we're in the low to mid-80s and it's going to be a nice breeze picking up but the high winds will get pretty high for parts of the north bay causing a problem of that high fire danger. now today will be the last day of that red flag warning. before we start to see our winds subside and cooler air, then that warm starts to rebuild just in time for the weekend and we know this upcoming weekend is the holiday fourth of july and the dry weather continues so that means no fireworks for us as we are going to have a high fire danger once again.g at tem week we're in the mid-80s for the inland areas. you notice that cooldown we'll be working towards as we head to the end of the week and look at thursday, only 75 degrees inland. back in the 80s, slightly above normal for the end of the week

into the weekend. san francisco in the low 70s today but mostly 60s throughout the rest of the forecast. mike gives us a look at what's happening for the morning commute across the bay area. kari, what's happening is it's gently building in some spots and lightening up in others. the shift is going on already as we take a look out there. we'll see the bay bridge toll plaza. they have the metering lights on. they were turned on early there but traffic is moving well in the middle lanes and, of course, the car-pool has a big advantage. as we look at the time getting there we see a little build in the east shore freeway that indicates a little flowing through berkeley is what i see and also for 580. a little slowing out of san leandro. no major problems on the maps as we do look around the bay. we see just mild slowing out of the altamont pass and also in san leandro on the right, a little more slowing down to hayward. the shift coming out of the altamont will lighten up and will move over to castro valley and hayward. in the middle a live look at
