4:32 am
few minutes. mike, how is it looking in the early morning drive? >> we'll take what chp reported as well as what very clear view problems for the cars reported by drivers. we're looking out to the maps. i circled the area where they talked about the wind chp and green sensors all around and no major problems right now. send it back to you. >> thanks, mike. fire crews busy for three hours containing a vegetation fire and showing the firefighters dousing the flames. it started around 11:15 last night and charred about six acres. the cause of that fire under investigation. no homes were threatened. fire crews say that this is a good reminder to everyone out there on how dry the brush is across the bay area.
4:33 am
later today, workers at tesla will protest the carmakers for mistreatment during the red, bob? >> a number of things, laura. that tesla fired employees who refused to work over covid-19 concerned. they accused ceo elon musk of covering up a covid-19 pandemic in the fremont plant behind me. they want the plant shut down for a deep cleaning and asking the alameda county health department to do contact tracing instead of tesla performing the function. the workers will protest outside the health department in oakland. you'll recall yesterday we reported on three former employees who were fired after accepting tesla's offer to stay at home over fears over the coronavirus. when musk reopened his factory in may, he did send a letter to
4:34 am
his employees that if they, quote, feel uncomfortable coming back to work at this time, please do not feel obligated to do so. by the end of june tesla told those workers they abandoned their jobs and fired them. one had a newborn with respiratory issues and one had recent heart surgery and tesla has not responded but in a public hearing that it is not true that they fired those employees. incidentally, "forbes" is reporting that tesla is the most valuable car company in the world. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell. >> all right, bob, thank you. we're finding out about another potential victim of covid-19. we're talking about the oakland zoo and the 700 animals that
4:35 am
live there. the facility has been closed since march and may have to close for good unless it is allowed to reopen. terry mcsweeney reports. >> reporter: something missing at the oakland zoo. no where can you find hopeople. >> we are living on our reserve and we only have three months of reserves left. >> reporter: oakland zoo's ceo said it cost $2.5 million per month to operate this month. the federal ppe money is spent and the situationdire. all he really wants is the zoo to be allowed to reopened and that will take county public health officials to reclassify the zoo. >> museums have been authorized to open and that's in stage two, which is allowed. but the state has placed zoos in stage three. >> our attempts to contact county officials after hours were unsuccessful.
4:36 am
this family lives near the zoo and loves to take the kids there and the parents both workedzo . >> zoo officials say they have a solid social distancing plan to reopen and if county officials are looking for another one, they can ask raymond llamas. >> i think it would be okay to do that. close down the food court and the rides and allow them to open up the zoo portion. >> reporter: if the nonprofit which operates the zoo goes under, management of the facility would revert to the city of oakland. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. this is for violating public gathering rules. dennis herrera sent the
4:37 am
archdiocese a cease and assist letter. they've been ordered to keep indoor services to less than 12 people or risk a temporary restraining order. the church issued a statement since they started the pandemic it's been cooperating with the city and would continue to do so adding priests everywhere have now been notified. we're keeping a close eye on the coronavirus infections this morning. the latest bay area numbers show there are more than 700 new cases. santa clara county saw the biggest jump with more than 200 new infections. in contra costa county, that number is 116. san francisco county 45. 4:37 for you this morning coming up here on "today the bay" the businesses across the state that are facing more economic uncertainty. the new information for you this morning we're getting about the bay area and the areas that are being forced to shut down yet again.

4:39 am
4:40 am
right now at 4:40. we have a cool start to the morning and santa rosa only 49 degrees, but it's 60 degrees right now as we check out our current temperature in oakland. we're going to see still a wide range in temperatures across the
4:41 am
bay area. we'll talk about that and a weekend heat up coming up in a few minutes. >> kari, i'm talking about 65 in oakland that will be the speed limit for the nimitz and folks are able to drive, we'll give them the benefit of the doubt. we'll talk about what else i'm seeing and mess with some notes for transit for tomorrow. goodern morning, i'm frank holland. wall street set to open higher as stocks rose to kick off the third quarter and closing at a new all-time high. all on track for sizable gains this week. the focus today, the monthly jobs report a day early because the markets are closed tomorrow to add to the holiday. economists expect nearly 3 million jobs were created in june when the country shut down this spring. that survey was c we saw and many americans are
4:42 am
filing for unemployment and many are collecting benefits. small sellers to have the opportunity to have a more professional page on the platform. they can share address, number and website. the travel is starting to come back, but it's far from normal. only 44% of americans are planning overnight vacations or leisure travel this year. up 70% in any given year. about two-thirds of those who expect to travel say they're likely to stay in a hotel heading into the holiday weekend. hotel bookings are strongest right now in beach town. kari hall, back over to you. >> thank you, frank. i thought we were going to the beach this weekend, but they closed it. so, who knows temperature trendn pleasanthill as you get ready to the head out, a nice day ahead.

4:46 am
here we are on friday eve. oh, what a day. don't we all just love fridays. >> say it, again. can't say it enough, kari. >> right. and for some people it is friday because they're off tomorrow for the holiday. weerp going to have a long holiday weekend and also ready for some warmer weather. it's pretty windy out there because we're getting cooler air moving into the bay area. as we take a live look outside in walnut creek we're starting with a few clouds moving by and sunshine again today and our temperatures going from the mid 50s here to the low 70s. we are going to enjoy a break from some of that warmer weather. as we check out our high temperatures expected to reach still into the mid 80s for the tri-valley from concord to livermore. 85 degrees and still reaching 90 degrees in ukiah while santa rosa will be cooler.
4:47 am
up to 82 degrees and 72 in oakland and in san francisco we're back in the mid 60s today. heads up we know we're heading into the holiday weekend and you want to light the fireworks with your family, but we are in a severe drought. we do have to be very careful and they're saying even the safe ones are not safe this weekend because of how dry it is. we can set a lot of those hills on fire because we are seeing such crisp vegetation. we'll have some hotter temperatures and also some very low humidity. those are not good ingredients as we head into a holiday weekend with fireworks. so as we look at what's going on here mostly parts of the peninsula over to the east bay and extending to the north bay and severe drought conditions and some of the driest vegetation we've seen in years. think about that before you make those weekendplans. temperatures here that are nice and comfortable for the next couple days. today and tomorrow are looking nice and then up to 90 it greed
4:48 am
on the fourth and july. what's happening out there on the roads, mike? >> well, you know, kari, things are looking very smooth right now because light traffic. a breeze you would see at the golden gate bridge where we talked about the wind advisory. take you out to the map where i circled the area circling the bay bridge, as well. slowed vehicle around powell and no slowing comes up and give the advisory and let's give a note, not even an advisory. other travel around the rest of the bay. smooth flow for the green sensors and take you over towards the east bay. and i just heard about a crash northbound direction which is 84 if you're traveling to the east and there may be three vehicles involved. it sounds like only one lane at the most is affected and the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. remember that agencies tomorrow may be affected by a holiday for a lot of folks, but we're looking at sfmta and ace trains
4:49 am
changing their skechedule. back to you. governor newsom is ordering immediate shut down of bars and restaurants in 19 counties. three are right here in the bay area. they include solano, contra county. they are experiencing increasing cases and hospitalizations. they reopened three weeks ago and must close, once again. business owners we spoke with said this recent order is just another blow for them and their employees. >> my employees came off of unemployment to come back to work only to find out three weeks later that some of them will be going back on unemployment which is really hard. >> the governor's new order will be in place for at least three weeks, depending on covid-19 cases that actually could be longer. and you know it's not just
4:50 am
indoor restaurants and bars effective immediately in solano county movie theaters, zoos and card rooms must close. those businesses were yet to reopen in contra costa and santa clara county. in the meantime state beaches in the county that you see will close their parking lots to avoid crowds. includes every bay area county that touches the coast, along with santa cruz. also part of the government's order could put gilroy at odds with the state and santa clara county. governor newsom is advising counties with mandatory closures to cancel fourth of july firework shows to help prevent crowds from gathering. despite that request gilroy will hold their show and people can watch them safely from home. >> we are shooting the fireworks up higher. we are trying to prevent people from congregating at our park. >> the public health department did not comment, but did point out that technically the show
4:51 am
would be in compliance as longs a there's no public gathering to watch it. plans for the only remaining gathering for fireworks show, well, that was in sonoma county and now up in smoke. the press democrat is reporting this morning that until yesterday a trip to cloverdale would have been your only option but they're canceling that event citing concerns about a rush of outsiders and a coronavirus spread. meantime while fireworks shows are canceled in lake tahoe, it's open to visitors. they are expecting a packed holiday weekend and also trying to get the word out that forget booking the last-minute camping spots because every camp ground is now booked solid. >> going to be busy. have you ever wondered what outer space smells like? one person says they actually have the answer. plus, not everyone can get a free ride. that's the new word from muni
4:52 am

4:55 am
while using the clipper card. that expansion would allow all children no matter the income for free. the reason for that halt an estimated $560 million budget shortfall over the next four years. happening today, the ferry service in tiburon is resuming after being closed in march due to covid-19. you can take the ferry on thursday through sunday. the ferry has reduced its capacity and now requires bookings in advance. also new this morning, have you ever thought about what space smells like? >> no. >> never, ever? me neither. >> well, somebody did and they actually bottled it. it's created by the same folks who created space smell for nasa in 2008. this would help astronauts train. now there is a kick starter campaign to educate school kids on space. what does it smell like?
4:56 am
