fireworks lighting up the skies and rattling residents and pets across the bay area. coming up in a live report how firefighters in one area are preparing for up to 50 fires a day. despite all the closures you can still celebrate outside. kari hall has your forecast fourth of july forecast coming up in seconds. "today in the bay" continues right now. we're so happy to have you with us on this 3rd of july, the eve of fourth of july. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. here we go into the holiday weekend. a lot of people looking to get out, have fun as much as they can with their mask, of course. kari hall keeping track of what we can expect from the temperatures. people wanting to have fun. how is it going to look for us? >> it's going to be a nice weekend and our temperatures are going to come up a few more degrees, but really nothing too

extreme here. as we start out with our live look outside in walnut creek, we'll have a really nice sunrise. temperatures in the low 50s. as we go through the day it's going to stay comfortable with mid-70s by late morning into the afternoon. as we look at our high temperatures for the day expect it to reach into the 60s near the coast. inland areas will be in the mid-80s today. we'll talk about a boost in the temperatures and how dry it is across the bay area. that's coming up in a few minutes. vianey, how is it looking as drivers get ready to head out the door? considering it's 5:00 in the morning you should have no issues when it comes to your commute especially because, well, i haven't had any accidents to report. let's take a look at how some of the drive times are doing in the tri-valley. westbound 580 grant line road to 680, 16 minutes. 680 to vargas road ten minutes.

you look at the drive times, you don't need to take your coffee to go just yet. maybe you can have that second cup of coffee at home. i'll keep a close eye on the roads and all of the chp reports to make sure that you don't have any snacks to encounter this morning. i'll have another update in a few minutes. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. as the bay area prepares for the fourth of july weekend, many places are shutting down their beaches to limit the spread of covid-19. take a look at this map. these are all the counties in the yellow like sonoma, marin, santa cruz county. well, all of the beach parking lots will be closed. the beaches are open but county leaders are encouraging people to stay home. take a look at these counties in the red. monterey county, half moon bay, pacifica, these are the places the city and state beaches, and the beaches parking lots, all closed. >> now we want to talk with cierra johnson who is in

pacifica where the parking lots will be closed and still the mayor is expecting people might try to show up. good morning, cierra. >> reporter: righter who at pacifica beach, all is quiet. it is typically packed for the holiday weekend. but starting today until sunday, the parking lots here will be closed in an attempt to reduce that spread of the coronavirus. as we all know is on its way up. the parking areas at pacifica beach will be closed, but the beaches will be open to local residents to walk or bike. congregating is not allowed and those on the beach must follow social distancing guidelines. in monterey they are taking things a step further closing all beaches and parking. earlier this week governor gavin newsom made the move to close parking lots to stop people from crowding the area citing family gatherings as major spreaders of the virus. local leaders hope the move is enough to stop the spread. >> as those people meet and

sometimes alcohol gets involved, and we've noticed as people consume alcohol, masks become less previous dent. >> reporter: and back out here live several of the beaches will have police and city workers patrolling the areas to enforce those closures or some of the partial closures. the marp of half moon bay says visitors defying the orders will first get a warning and the second occurrence they will receive a fine. so things you really want to pay attention to going into this very different holiday weekend. we're live at pacifica beach. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." we want to bring in "today in the bay's" jackie ward in contra costa county where a scary situation that could unfold, fires. we've been talking about that a lot, and it really has to do with the illegal fireworks. jackie, what is the warning going up for people this morning? >> reporter: people have been hearing the illegal fireworks shows for months now, no matter

where you live. here in contra costa county any fireworks you set off yourself is illegal. last month in contra costa county alone the number of fires quadrupled over the same time last year. in the past 36 hours there have been at least seven vegetation fires. at least half of them started by illegal fireworks. it's a loud and potentially dangerous trend that fire officials want to put a stop to. >> those fireworks now, even how innocuous they might seem is a chance to start a devastating, deadly, property destroying wildfire. >> reporter: fire protection says it's upstaffing and they'll have one or two in addition to their normal crews. they anticipate they will be busy. fire officials say if history repeats itself they expect to be tackling up to 50 vegetation fires starting today through sunday.

discovery bay, jackie ward, "today in the bay." >> all right, jackie, thank you. despite more sththan 50,000 cases confirmed just yesterday, president trump plans to travel to mt. rushmore today to hold a massive fireworks display. that event is taking place despite a decades long ban on pyrotechni pyrotechnics. they have signs throughout the park urging visitors to wear mask coverings and to follow social distancing rules. leaders plan to protest the president's visit. happening today protests are not only going on for the president's visit but also here in the bay area as well. in the south bay at 2:00 this afternoon adrian wilcox high school will hold a protest. they are marching from adrian wilcox high school to central park.

a stern warning from officials in southern california to partygoers. don't do it and stay at home. but private in-home gatherings are prohibited in san diego county. >> punishable up to 90 days in jail and a fine. >> the district attorney says large parties will attract attention and people will be cited. a neighbor in the east bay is getting ready to celebrate the fourth of july very creatively. free throw month's annual parade got canceled. this is a big deal. the city is planning a porch parade. they decorated porches and front yards. so far 130 people have entered and the judges will select the best and most creative porches. send us your pictures if you have set up your porch so we can see it. a lot of fourth of july events now virtual just like some of the ones we talked about before.

reach into the mid-80s in ukiah and clear lake. we'll continue to monitor this forecast and will let you know what's going on from the beach to the sierra coming up. vianey, you've been getting people out the door with a look what to expect. how is it looking now? >> it has been a smooth commute thus far. we have a look at our traffic maps here and nothing to report. so let's get right to some drive times. when i say nothing to report, i mean no major accidents, nothing blocking the roadways. the cars are just moving along. westbound 80 from highway 4 to the bay bridge is about 14 minutes. westbound 580 from 238 to the bay bridge about 14 minutes and 880 from 238 about 13 minutes. let's take a live look at 880 to see how that's doing. this does tend to be a spot when we notice the cars building up out there especially right around, you know, i would say 5:30, 6:00 a.m. so far looks like we're doing

very good jobs report that we got a day early yesterday. a total of 7.5 million jobs gained over the past two months. >> the largest monthly jobs gain in the history of our country. the unemployment rate fell by more than two percentage points, down to just about 11%. we're down to the 11% number. >> now that good news puts the chances of a second stimulus in some doubt. president trump has said he wants a second handout from the government to americans but does not have the enthusiasm from fellow republicans. senator rob portman of ohio describing the situation on the hill to "the wall street journal" said it's a little confusing for people because you have a higher rate of covid in the last few weeks and better jobs numbers than anyone expected. other news, new court papers filed in the oelizabeth holmes

fraud case, jim mattis could be called as a witness. he was on the board before becoming a defense secretary but would make that trial all that much more notable. holmes created a blood testing machine or perhaps more accurately the government says she claimed to make a blood testing machine defrauding investors. personal shoppers are making a ton of money working for dumpling. i talked to the ceo of the company. he's not shy explains he set it up that way in part to avoid california's ab-5 law. we'll talk about that on nbc bay area right after "meet the press." i want to point out one more thing to you, marcus and kris, this morning, the dog that normally photo bombs me, he's right there. he finally got a haircut. when they opened up the dog

we have that camera for you. we're going to see some mainly clear conditions out there. and, yeah, pretty dark. let's get a look at our temperature trend for the morning. we are going to start out with some mid-50s for us and then as we go throughout the day we're going from 55 degrees to 79 degrees at 1:00. normally we're reaching about 81 degrees. that's about where we'll be for later today. so we're making plans. maybe you'll be grilling today. in gilroy we'll have warm weather and mainly upper 70s here for the middle of the afternoon. have dinner outside. it's going to be great. a little bit of a breeze so you may have to hold the tablecloth down. high temperatures in san jose in the low 80s. heading to the east bay mid-80s. 76 degrees and low 70s in oakland while san francisco will be in the mid-60s. now i'm not encouraging anyone to go anywhere.

i'm just going to tell you the forecast. if you are going to the beach, there will be some nice weather, and we're also concerned about the beach hazard statement in effect, the possibility of sneaker waves and rip currents for all the surfers out there. just a heads-up there will be long periods of swells between 20 and 22 seconds. so that makes it really dangerous out there. if you have plans to go to the sierra, well, that's a live look this morning, and the weather is also going to be pretty nice here looking at squaw valley with some mid-70s. here in the bay area it will warm up just slightly for tomorrow with low 90s. and then as we go into next week we're keeping that seasonable weather with highs in the 80s. vianey, you've been keeping an eye on the roads. anything new popping up for the commute? >> there isn't. it's still good. let's look at the traffic map and get a wide view of the bay area and what we're tracking. because it has been so quiet,

5:25. an intense encounter turns ugly for a peninsula teenager, and it was all caught on video. he says he feels targeted because he was black or is black. >> get it away. get your -- camera off me. >> holding the phone there and recording that is 17-year-old steve johnson jr. he says that incident started as he was stretching for his daily run. he says the woman came up behind him and started yelling at him to move. he started recording after someone nearby told him to document the exchange. the woman swings her bag, hits him in the head. johnson says that he could have defended himself, but he knows if he did that situation would have ended differently. >> as a trained boxer and ranked number 16th in the state, if i would have reacted the way a lot of people would have assumed i reacted by punching that lady, i would be the one on the news for

hurting an old lady, an old caucasian lady. >> police say the woman was cited for misdemeanor child abuse, but she was released because he wasn't injured and because of covid-19 concerns at the county jail. the rise in covid-19 cases is becoming more alarming not only here in california but also in other states and florida is setting records every day for the number of people who are testing positive. just yesterday alone more than 10,000 cases were confirmed. if you had cases from other large states like ours, california, texas and arizona, the u.s. now has shattered the world record on daily cases. yesterday more than 55,000 infections of americans were recorded. 5:27 and coming up next for you, the top stories we're following including that warning going out to boaters this morning planning to hit the delta in contra costa county. we're live in discovery bay next.

few minutes. vianey, any issues on the roads this morning? no issues, kari. things are looking great out there. look at our traffic maps. we have no slow spots, not even down through the south bay. so why don't we take a look at tri-valley drive times as we get the early commute rolling in. it is 5:30, after all this is when we notice building along 580 from grant line road to 680. you don't have to worry about it today. it is friday, a friday light commute. 680 to vargas road about five minutes. again, no big accidents to report. we have a smooth commute at least for now at 5:30. i'll send it back to you. thank you very much, vianey. the number of covid-19 numbers continue to spike, more than 240,000 cases here and more than 6,000 people who have died because of the virus.

more than 7,500 new infections were added and yesterday following wednesday's record setting 9,000 new cases. meanwhile here in the bay area 750 new cases reported yesterday. santa clara county confirming 178 new cases, but alameda county saw the biggest jump with 226 in just one day. and contra costa county has seen an increase in infections and that is causing concern this morning. the delta is a popular place for partying on weekends especially a holiday weekend. we sent jackie ward to discovery bay as boats are already going into the water. jackie? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, marcus. we spoke to a merchant captain who has been patrolling the waters around discovery bay for years now. he told us that he has never seen this many boats this past week as he has in recent years. we spoke to captain john garza with pacific coast water service, and -- or water rescue,

rather -- and he suggests people are using the delta as an escape from the shelter-in-place order. be careful out here. he's witnessed reckless behavior and inexperienced boaters who struggle to maneuver. a man fell off a boat and drowned. he says a number of people are not social distancing. >> there's larger groups. there shouldn't be. they should be families together on a boat. >> and what you're seeing aren't families? >> it's mixed groups. boats are congregating sometimes. it's just not safe. >> reporter: the captain reminds partiers to wear a facemask and a life vest. the contra costa county sheriff's office will be patrolling the waters like they always do. it seems to be a busy weekend at lake tahoe. take a look at this long line of cars and boats. boaters were already being turned away as all campgrounds are booked. rangers are telling people to

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in pacifica where surely things will be very different than we are used to in years past. this is pretty unprecedented. >> reporter: yeah, this is really becoming our new normal. right now i'm at pacifica beach, the sun is starting to come up. things are quiet. this beach is typically packed with folks wanting to celebrate the holiday. this year it's going to be a little different. starting today until sunday the parking lot here at this beach

will be closed to reduce the number of people making their way out to the water in an attempt to slow that spread. now the parking here will be closed, but the beaches will be open to local residents to walk and to bike. the state's website telling visitors congregating is not allowed and those on the beach must follow social distancing guidelines. as we've mentioned wearing that mask in popular half moon bay they're taking things a step further. all beaches and parking will be closed. so what can families do as an alternative? we traveled to marin county. the county spokesperson says the key to staying safe this holiday weekend is doing things with the folks who you shelter in place with. resist the urge to hold bigger gatherings and remember to practice social distancing. >> there are other opportunities to have a backyard campout with your family, maybe a danceoff, stream a movie on a big screen out in your backyard. basically we want families to

still find ways to celebrate the spirit of independence day but do so safely close to home. >> reporter: some great ideas. she also mentioned if you're wanting to see the fireworks look into cities municipalities streaming and marin county will be one of those areas that will do the virtual fireworks so it may be a great chance to hang out with your family in your home and celebrate what is becoming our new normal. things out here are going to be very different this holiday weekend. i'm live in pacifica beach, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> all right, hopefully folks will heed the warning. if we're going to have a danceoff in this family it's a good thing in the backyard. nobody needs to see that. thank you, cierra. >> i want to see that. i do. 5:37 for you this morning. and despite putting the brakes on reopening, there's now a reopening date set for hair and nail salons as well as gyms in santa clara county.

they're set to open in ten days. this is on monday, july 13th. also reopening on that day child care and summer camps. dr. sara cody the public health officer says that it is time to rethink reopenings. >> we're at a point in this pandemic when it's crystal clear covid-19 will be with us for a long time, and so we need to adapt to a new way of being, a new way of living that keeps us all safe, and that allows us to do some of the things that we miss. >> more good news for you. social gatherings inside will be allowed for 20 or fewer. outside 60 or fewer but physical distancing and masks are required. that all begins july 13th. and an update this morning on an orinda senior facility where some 50 residents and workers have tested positive for the coronavirus. "the chronicle" is reporting

this morning the contra costa county d.a. found evidence of elder abuse at orinda care center. the d.a.'s office says lack of staffing and proper ppe is evident of neglect. that investigation is still ongoing. we've been reporting that outbreak at that facility began back in april. all right, baseball fans, spring training 2.0 starts today, but the giants and the a's won't be holding their first games or practices until tomorrow. one more day. both teams will prepare for the shortened season here at home, not in arizona. the official schedule should come out next week. "the chronicle" is reporting the giants will open on the road against the dreaded dodgers on july 23rd. the season will consist of 60 games, which is kind of up to my speed, at least here at the start, no fans allowed. >> i like the idea of a 60-game season. then i could watch some of them.

this is surveillance photo of the vehicle as it drove away from the scene along vine avenue. a similar looking van was captured on surveillance video in the area. at last check the boy is in stable condition. anyone with information is asked to call chp. meanwhile, more mask concerns. this time in observing. this is where police are looking for a driver accused of assaulting a mcdonald's employee. that employee says that incident happened saturday afternoon on san pablo avenue. in the police report the worker says she told the driver in the drive-through she couldn't serve him because he wasn't wearing the mask. and this is where it gets horrible. that man yelled racial slurs, parked his car and comes back and starts to slap the woman repeatedly. she suffered minor injuries. activists coming up with all sorts of ways to try to get the attention of tesla ceo elon musk. one supporter says he decided to literally project his feelings

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." the solano counselcounty distri attorney says she will recuse herself and office from reviewing two high-profile deadly shootings that happened in the vallejo police department. willie mccoy was shot nearly 2 dozen times by vallejo police outside of a taco bell restaurant in february of last year. he had fallen asleep behind the wheel but had a gun in his lap. investigators say that when he moved his arm officers opened fire.

the other case involved sean monterrosa who was shot in june outside of a walgreens store. officers said they thought he had a gun in his waistband which turned out to be a hammer. district attorney krishna abrams is referring both shootings to the state attorney general. >> the current circumstances to preserve the safety of our community and provide can haonfe in the outcome. >> this comes after abrams received calls to step back from the cases. >> an intense encounter turns ugly and this was all caught on video. he says that he felt targeted because he's black. >> get it away. get your -- camera off me. >> that is 17-year-old steven johnson jr. holding the phone

recording that and says the incident started as he stretched for his daily run. the woman came up and yelled for him to move. he started recording after someone nearby told him to document the exchange. the woman swung her bag hitting him in the head. johnson says he could have defended himself but it would have ended differently. >> as a trained boxer and ranked number 16, if i would have reacted the way a lot of people would assumed i would have reacted by punching the lady i would have been on the news for hurting an old lady, an old caucasian lady. >> police say the woman was cited for misdemeanor child abuse but released because he wasn't injured and because of the covid-19 concerns at the county jail. san francisco is getting help from sacramento in helping people who are struggling to find affordable housing and
