garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike's keeping an eye on that commute for us. let's start with meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast that we can expect for today, kari, especially with all the fires going on across the bay area. yeah, we'll have some smoke coming in today. we'll have to monitor those conditions and hopefully more containment today as we take a live look outside as we start out in the south bay we've seen some drifts of smoke coming in. you can probably smell it right now. our temperatures are in the mid-50s. not much of a wind. we'll see it go from the mid-50s at 8:00 to the low 80s. it's going to be about normal for this time of year in terms of temperatures as we get a bit of a cooldown and some low to mid-80s for some of our warmest spots in the inland east bay and the north bay. we'll talk about that air quality as well coming up in the forecast and, mike, for the morning drive any issues heading out the door? kari, last week at this time we had the metering lights
6:01 am
turned on and the backup quickly formed. at the live look today, no backup, no metering lights, no problems. a live shot shows you traffic flows very smoothly here and a good, manageable volume. the map will show you a little bit of slowing as you get toward where the roadway narrows and you have fewer lanes on the incline. that's it. the rest of the bay shows a nice, easy drive, a little slowing out of the altamont. checking on the peninsula, there may be something there. a bigger concern you have, kris? thank you, mike. breaking news right now, this morning we're finding out the brush fire that's burning near gilroy started because of not fireworks, exploded to 1,500 acres and there are still concerns about another fire burning nearby in morgan hill. "today in the bay's" roz plater has the overnight temts and what we think may have started the fire. roz? >> reporter: indeed. i'll show you where we are right
6:02 am
here off canada road where the cal fire folks are staging. and to my right i just want to show you, you see the blackened hillside, the fire came up the hillside, jumped across the road and hit the ridge on the other side. you see all that charred hillside there. that's the terrain the firefighters had to deal with. it's been very difficult for them. in the meantime now this morning we have learned that this was all started from a structure fire that got out of control very rapidly. let's show you some of the most recent pictures of their firefight overnight. they have their hands full. the latest information the blaze spread to some 1,500 acres and is only 15% contained. at least two homes destroyed. we now know it started with the structure fire on crews road just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon and the winds quickly spread the fire to nearby brush and beyond. there is a mandatory evacuation order in place for 25 homes. some evacuees tell us they were hesitant to leave at first.
6:03 am
>> they said about a 50/50 chance that my place was going to be burned up. so just waiting. we'll find out pretty quick. >> reporter: there is much better containment on the park fire in morgan hill. that started late saturday night. it has burned more than 300 acres but is now, we're told, 76% contained. to word on the cause, but investigating the possibility it could be connected to fireworks. in the meantime you can see all the smoke around me here, but there was also a lot of smoke when i left home this morning in downtown san jose. you could smell it. for more on what that means to the air quality back to kari. and, roz, we've seen our weather conditions actually causing the smoke to just be trapped in some of our valleys and santa clara valley especially with the smoke that will continue to drift in as we have high pressure that causes the air to sink, it makes it
6:04 am
very difficult for the air to mix out. as we go into the evening there will be metropolitan more of a westerly breeze coming through the mountain gaps and that could help us out a little bit and bring in more humidity. we lock at our air quality, for most of us it's pretty good this morning but does get hazardous for the south bay and the south county especially near morgan hill. now as we go into today, our winds are coming in at 10 to 15 miles per hour to start and then as we go into later today our winds in that area will pick up to 20 to 25 miles per hour. hopefully there will be more containment soon. our winds will become a little bit more breezy later on this evening. we'll talk about our weather conditions temperature wise coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. 6:04 this morning and covid-19 cases continue to spike over the holiday weekend in parts of the bay area. in santa clara county you see right here almost 5,300 cases. alameda county still
6:05 am
now almost 27,900 cases right here in the bay area. here is an overview of those new cases confirmed within the last 24 hours. you can see santa clara county with 200, nearly 200 new infections. alameda county has almost 300 new ones. the counties with those dashes you see right there have yet to update their cases. and "today in the bay's" bob redell live for us. the state says the county can't reopen hair or nail salons. >> reporter: marcus, the santa clara county ceo says that decision by the state does not make sense considering other counties have opened businesses like nail and hair salons and gyms. the county says it will be speaking with the state of california, reaching out for more guidance on what it needs to do to move on to the next phase of reopening its economy.
6:06 am
an owner of a nail salon calls the decision by the state a death sentence for her business. santa clara county had put in a request to the state on thursday to reopen those kinds of businesses and to allow larger social gatherings. the idea was for this to be effective july 13th. the state has rejected that plan. also in the south bacon fusion over whether or not restaurants can resume outdoor dining. as you see in the surveillance video agents with the alcoholic beverage control, abc, entered ladera grill and other restaurants in the city of gilroy to let them know they were in violation of the state's guidance on outdoor dining. the restaurants were allowed to continue for the night but they had to shut down the next day or be cited. ladera grill still did open the next day. the owners say they adhere to social distancing and safety protocols. abc says the county had not received a variance to open and the restaurants are technically in violation of a stay-at-home
6:07 am
order. santa clara county says it's aware of the situation, of the incident, but is not weighing in whether or not it thinks those were violations. reporting live bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i know a lot of people frustrated about that. thank you for the update. starting today you're going to have to pay more to park in oakland. the city will start enforcing its parking meters again. payments were halted due to the pandemic. this comes as the economy slowly reopens. city leaders say those parking spots are going to be in demand as people start going back out for dining, shopping, and those meters will be in operation. all right. so much for the a's getting the whole squad together for practice and training camp. just as they reported for practice on saturday, a testing delay is now keeping them in limbo. the a's say the team's coronavirus test results are on hold in large part because of shipping delays because of the

fourth of july holiday. only pitchers and catchers have made it on the field so far. it's possible the results could come back today at which point there could be a full workout. the team says there's just really no guarantee. stanford i reopening the dish, granted visitors follow the new social distancing and mask rules. the radio telescope dish is still in operation and has about a three-mile walk path that goes around it. stanford is asking visitors to complete the loop and only go around counterclockwise to avoid contact with others. masks are required when you're within six feet of another person. kari, a lot of people may be going up there but what can they see? we're seeing smoke in a lot of those areas. hopefully that will not block any of the visuals out there. it's not going to be that thick but if you have an n95
6:09 am
mask we were saying there will be a lot of smoke. that may help you out there as well. we're looking at temperatures this morning mostly in the mid-50s and then as you get ready to head out the door in parts of the east bay and spots like pleasant hill a nice day ahead, slightly cooler than yesterday with our trend going into the low 80s by early in the afternoon. we're looking at mid-80s for concord and antioch and napa today a high also of 86 degrees with palo alto reaching 76. we'll see mid-60s in san francisco. we'll take a look ahead to the rest of the week's forecast in a few minutes. mike, any issues for commuters right now? no. looking good right now, kari. green sensors pretty much everywhere you go. you'll have to tap the brakes in a few spots. i did circle a spot at the top of the screen. a small fire on the side of the road popped up on our report. so it shouldn't affect traffic
