to publish an open letter to the world health organization urging the agency to revise its guidelines and acknowledge the virus can easily spread through the air indoors. right now less than half of states require wearing face coverings in public despite cdc recommendations to do so even in those states, not everyone's following the rules in north carolina a mask mutiny of sorts nearly none seen at this beach more than a week after a state mandate went into effect some customers outside a walmart there defiant. >> if you want to wear a mask, you can wear a mask. if you don't want to wear a mask, you shouldn't have to. it's a free country. everyone has the right to do as they please. >> reporter: in california where masks have been mandatory for weeks, beachgoers in santa cruz are getting used to the routine. >> a mask is now part of your checklist. >> reporter: in new jersey, chris and c.j. were among hundreds streaming into the newly reopened six flags great adventure theme park keeping up their july 4th

tradition with masks in tow. >> it's the right thing to do. the only difference would be once we finish this we're going to trade them into something more stylishrn such a drastic change in behavior won't happen overnight. >> if you think about things like seat belts or smoke free laws, that took years, decades even to change people's habits and make it become just a part of everyday life >> reporter: now, here in new york city there is no timetable for when indoor dining might return, but there is some encouraging news the positivity rate or the percentage of tests that are coming back positive is now down to about 1%. hoda >> all right gabe gutierrez for us. thank you. we are now joined by dr. ashish ja he's the director of the global health institute good morning we were reporting about a record number of covid cases this weekend. that is pre-fourth of july celebration. those numbers aren't going to come out for another week to ten days so what do we have in store for us ahead and do you think the hospitals are ready? >> so good morning and thank you

for having me on what i expect based on both some of the pictures we just saw and just in general the trends that the number of cases is going to continue to rise across the country. certainly in those hot spots of texas and florida and south carolina, arizona. and in terms of the hospitals, you know, a lot of hospitals are already starting to bump up against their capacity and maybe they can add more. maybe we can set up field hospitals, start shipping patients across to other parts of the state but at some point, we are going to run out of all of our capacity, our ability to take care of people and so we've got to sort of shut this off and we've got to find ways of really breaking the increase in cases or we're going to get into a lot of trouble sooner than we think >> let's talk about that how do we get these spikes under control? i mean, do some states have to go all the back to stay at home orders is this is a mask thing? what's the answer? >> there's no one answer i think all of us agree that having to go back to

stay-at-home, shelter in place is really the last thing we want to do. so what can we do to prevent that one is i do agree with governor murphy, we need a national strategy and every state should have a mandatory mask order. this is -- you know, one of the folks in the last segment talked about freedom and how everybody should choose on their own i don't get to walk into a retail store and light up a cigarette out of my desire to smoke indoors. i shouldn't be able to walk in a retail store not wearing a mask it's the same thing in my mind so we do need a national strategy i think we need to continue to hings like testing and tracing indoor bars, nightclubs, i think we just can't afford any of those right now. not while having these kind of outbreaks. >> lastly a lot of parents are looking ahead thinking school's supposed to start in two months. if you were reading the tea leaves, would you think children will be going back to school this fall?

>> so we all need and want desperately to get our kids back to school. i certainly do as a parent the problem is we're going to see the kinds of outbreaks we're seeing in arizona, texas, florida, in other places it's going to be very hard to keep schools open one of the reasons we've got to get serious about bringing the disease under control, if we don't there's no chance schools will stay open this fall i really do think people have to get serious now if we want to get a shot at getting our kids back in this fall. >> dr. jha, thank you for your expertise as always. we appreciate you. >> thank you president trump spent part of the holiday weekend playing down the danger of coronavirus claiming nearly all cases in the u.s. are harmless. nbc white house corresponden peter alexander has that part of the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you as well. even as the president has said he hopes the virus will soon disappear, white house aides now acknowledge it's not going away any time soon, and that americans need to learn to live with it.

this comes after back-to-back independence day weekend addresses where the president made no attempt to unify americans. instead, delivering an us versus them message painting a dark picture of the country. with coronavirus cases surging, even setting records in parts of the country, president trump dismissed the seriousness of the pandemic delivering this misleading claim. >> now we have tested almost 40 million people by so doing, we show cases 99% of which are totally harmless. >> reporter: most public health experts dispute that assessment, but the fda commissioner declined to fact check the president. >> so i'm not going to get into who's right and who's wrong. >> you won't say whether 99% of coronavirus cases are, quote, completely harmless as true or false, what the president said at the white house last night? >> dana, what i'll say is that we have data in the white house

in tulsa, masks were optional. this time the campaign says all ateendys are strongly encouraged to wear them craig? >> peter alewhite house, thank . another major story coming out of the holiday weekend. gun violence. the celebrations in a number of major cities like new york, chicago, and atlanta all marred by deadly shootings. a number of the victims were young children. and atlanta's mayor had a very powerful statement for those responsible. nbc's blayne alexander joins us now with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. across the country we saw communities, cities all rocked by gun violence over the holiday weekend. here in atlanta at least 26 people were shot between friday and sunday including an 8-year-old little girl who was riding in the back seat of the car with her mother. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: overnight atlanta mayor keisha lance bottoms denouncing the gun violence that killed 8-year-old secoriea turner. >> shot and killed a baby. it wasn't one shooter. there were at least two

shooters. >> reporter: turner was shot saturday night riding in a car with her mother near the burned remains of a wendy's where rayshard brooks was killed last month. many have taken over the area at times blocking the street refusing to let cars pass. the mayor slammed any protests that are not peaceful. >> it has to stop. you can't blame this on a police officer. you can't say that this is about criminal justice reform. we're fighting the enemy within when we are shooting each other up on our streets. >> reporter: this shooting just one of many during a violent holiday weekend in cities across the country. dozens of people killed by gunfire. in chicago at least 17 people killed, including another child, 7-year-old natalie wallace. memphis, omaha and cleveland also reported an alarming number of shootings.

and in new york city, shootings have doubled every week for the last three weeks. mayor bill de blasio facing fierce criticism from current and former members of the nypd accusing him of, quote, surrendering the city with hefty cuts to its police force in the wake of calls for reform. president trump calling out the rise in shootings saying the federal government is ready, willing, and able to help if asked. as cities across the country grapple with a new wave of violence. guys, back here in atlanta less than 24 hours after little secoriea was killed, three more people were shot in that same vicinity, including a 53-year-old man who died on sunday. hoda? >> so sad. blayne alexander, thank you. >> we're going to take a turn now. lots more to get to on this monday morning, including a big day for sports fans. major league baseball expected to release its 2020 schedule this morning. the shortened season will start

homes evacuated. those folks staying at the gilroy sonoma county. if you're in the area you may see and hear something different. that's because pg&e will have helicopters flying in the area this week beginning today. we're going to be looking at some of the power lines to get a feel of how they can better respond to repairs to reduce the number of people impacted by those mandatory shutoffs and reduce the time you have to endure them. and, of course, weather is always a factor talking about fire danger. kari, we've had some breeziness but maybe not so much overnight. yes, so the winds have calmed down and we're seeing a lot of the smoke from the south county trapped in santa clara valley. as we take a live look outside in san jose concerns about air quality for today a the

florida, south carolina, texas among the states notching new dail kill popular lake in northern idaho. witnesses reported seeing the mid air crash before the planes plunged into lake coeur d'alene. people enjoying the holiday weekend at the lake tried but were unable to save any of the victims. nobody on the ground was hurt. the planes have been located in about 130 feet of water. now to a frightening accident at a nascar race in indianapolis, indiana. a member of ryan blaney's crew was hurt right there during a pileup on pit road. take a look. you can see him there actually getting pinned between two cars briefly and then quickly scoots out of the way. that crew member's name is zach price. zach was c thumb's up. price was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released, thankfully. also this morning, tributes

are pouring in for broadway star nick cordero. we've been following the tony nominated actor's battle with the coronavirus for months. overnight his wife amanda announced that nick had passed away. joe fryer joins us with more on this. hey, joe, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. cordero passed away at cedars-sinai medical center here in los angeles where his battle with covid-19 lasted more than 90 days. he is survived by his devoted wife and their 1-year-old son elvis. the bright lights of broadway a little dimmer after the passing of one of its stars actor nick cordero. he died sunday after battling coronavirus for more than three months. his heartbroken wife amanda writing on instagram, god has another angel in heaven now. my darling husband passed away this morning. he was surrounded in love by his family singing and praying as he gently left this earth. ♪ this world's gone crazy

>> reporter: reaction to the tragic news swift. josh gad writing my heart is broken. i feel ill. viola davis, my condolences to you, an ma dashgs wamanda, who loved so hard. zach braff writing i can honestly tell you i have never met a kinder human being. don't believe that covid only claims the elderly and infirm. cordero who appeared in shows like "waitress" and "rock of ages" spent the last three months in the hospital. six weeks of that in a medically induced coma. his wife amanda kept the world posted through the triumphs. >> dada is awake! yea! >> reporter: and the tears. >> nick suffered from some new lung infection in his lungs earlier this week. >> reporter: unable to see her husband for 79 days, amanda was finally able to visit him in june posting this tender photo of them holding hands at his bedside. ♪

amanda encouraged fans and friends to sing cordero's single "live your life" every day. the heartwarming response online was overwhelming. in her instagram note, amanda said that song not only lifted her spirits but provided comfort in his final moments. we sang it to him today holding his hands. as i sang the last line to him, they'll give you hell but don't let them kill your life without a fight. i smile because he definitely put up a fight. i will love you forever and always, my sweet man. >> that is such a sad story. what makes this even sadder and more shocking is he was young. he didn't have any underlying health issues. how did it get so bad? >> reporter: cordero was only 41 years old and he had no known preexisting health conditions but there were complications.

maxwell. >> we do the 58-year-old who is accused of grooming underage girls for sexual abuse and even participating in that abuse herself, remains in jail in new hampshire. and overnight, one of epstein's main accusers reacted for the first time nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest she's been following this story for us steph, good morning to you >> reporter: craig, good morning. you know, it was a year to the day that jeffrey epstein was arrested now it's his longtime associate ghislaine maxwell who's in jail leaving many to wonder what will happen to others in epstein's world. for months prosecutors say ghislaine maxwell hid away in this new hampshire mansion but thursday fbi agents moved in arriving in about a dozen cars a plane flying above to make sure the only way she left was the handcuffses. now jeffrey epstein's closest associate is sitting in a cell in this medium security county jail in new hampshire. the 58-year-old faces four charges in connection with

transporting a minor for criminal sexual activity maxwell has long denied involvement with epstein's alleged crimes prosecutors requested a hearing on friday telling a judge she's expected to be transferred to new york early this week the question many are asking, will maxwell reveal any secrets about others in epstein's circle one of his accusers virginia roberts giuffre said this to "60 minutes australia. >> i hope she comes forward and says "a," "b," "c," "d," "e" was involved and this is how it ran. you know, just help us victims get some accountability. >> reporter: one connection of interest, maxwell's friend prince andrew. >> she attended princess beatrice's 18th birthday party and she also visited buckingham palace on multiple occasions this is not just the privilege of someone that is a casual friend this is a very close friend.

>> reporter: this newly surfaced photo published by the daily telegraph appears to show maxwell with kevin spacey sitting on the throne at buckingham palace. the telegraph reports it was taken during a tour organized by prince andrew in 2002. spacey has faced his own allegations of sexual assault which he has denied. nbc has not verified the photo giuffre says maxwell recruited he photo was taken in maxwell's london townhouse next to the bathroom where she says prince andrew abused her. >> what happened >> the first time in london i was so young ghislaine woke me up in the morning and said you're going to meet a prince that day i didn't know at that point that i was going to be trafficked to that prince. >> reporter: allegations he has repeatedly denied including in this bbc interview last year >> i have no recollection of ever meeting this lady none whatsoever. >> reporter: now a friend of maxwell's tells "good morning britain" that maxwell wa epstein's victim too >> i believe that she is a

victim of jeffrey epstein just like many other people were. it doesn't mean what she did was right, but i also know she tried many, many, many times to get away from jeffrey. he kept keeping her there, luring her there >> steph, for months now there has been this back and forth about prince andrew speaking with officials here in the united states. do we know where that stands >> reporter: you know, the u.s. attorney was asked about that on thursday, the day they arrested ghislaine maxwell. she said they are interested in speaking to prince andrew but then a person close to his team tells nbc news they are, quote, bewildered by that comment that they have communicated with the u.s. attorney's office twice in the last month and gotten no response, craig. >> all right stephanie gosk will continue to follow this. thank you. we are joined now by brad edwards. mr. edwards is an attorney for more than 50 accusers and survivors of jeffrey epstein's

sex ring he is also the author of a book about the case the book is called "relentless pursuit. mr. edwards, good morning to you, sir >> good morning. thanks for having me >> we know that when jeffrey epstein was arrested last year, we know there were a number of survivors that came forward after that, a number of witnesses that came forward as well since ghislaine maxwell was arrested last week, have you talked to any other survivors or witnesses? >> yes just in the last five days we have received tips from several very important witnesses and at least one other victim that i expect is only going to help the case >> obviously without asking you to sacrifice the confidentialitu characterize the claims that these witnesses and survivors have made? >> not beyond very helpful observations that they made many

years ago that like i said, it is only going to strengthen the case that's already been brought. >> one of the things that struck me, i read the indictment last week when she was arrested one of the things that's striking is prosecutors decided for whatever reason to really focus on three years they focused on that time period between 1994 and 1997. any idea why they might be focusing on that period of time? >> sure. you know, what everybody came to understand about the breadth of the operation was there were hundreds of victims. and then you have to back track. how did that begin and when you rewind time, you come to the '93, '94, '95, '96 years as the inception of what ultimately grew into this massive spider web of victims and what was that genesis and how did it come about. ans at you're seeing in the indictment.

that's kind of where the story began, so to speak >> i want to ask you about prince andrew for a moment here. again, virginia giuffre claims that prince andrew had sex with her three times when she was 17. it's a claim that the prince has vehemently denied time and time again. but there are these flight logs that put them on the same flight puts ghislaine maxwell on the same flight with the two of them what story do you think that ghislaine maxwell has to tell about prince andrew specifically and do you think she's going to tell that story now? >> no chance they are very, very close friends. this isn't a casual relationship and i don't think that prince andrew is going to say what he knows about ghislaine and i don't think ghislaine is going to say what she knows about prince andrew. i think that the fact that he has go so long without providing any of the information he has and it's not only virginia we have several other clients who were in his presence and mr. epstein's presence know him to be around.

>> reporter: jefferson declared slavery a moral depravity and a hideous blot but was often silent when it came to personal or political action. >> people like to say jefferson built this house no enslaved people built this house. children helped build this house. and if you look closely, you can see the fingerprints, the theyk indentations that the children made when they were making bricks >> reporter: gayle is a descendant of hemmings and jefferson. >> i get emotional when i think about the work we do i would argue the people enslaved here are just important to america as thomas jefferson >> reporter: well spaced visitors are welcome at monticello the simmons family came from washington, d.c.

enslavement did to our country because it's not comfortable it's not easy. it's hard work, but it's necessary. jefferson was such a meticulous keeper of his records, we know the names of all the 600-plus people who were enslaved here. and in the not too distant future, there will be a site just down the hill here where all of those names will be displayed and people can come and see them and read them and know even better the history of this place >> you know, harry, we are in this moment in our country where so many of our symbols and statues and places like monticello, we are re-examining how they fit into this great american narrative and perhaps no place better symbolizes that re-examination than where you are right now. >> reporter: well, it's such an

important bridge that's been built here between the iconic jefferson and maybe the real life jefferson and it's interesting because in the original draft of the declaration, jefferson came out flat out against slavery two southern states said that's got to go. they took it out now some years later in the late 1700s, abolitionists came to jefferson and said please join our cause. he was quite silent. as a matter of fact, and i want to read this quote exactly one of the abolitionists said about jefferson, never did a man achieve more things for which he did not do >> wow interesting. i felt like that was a history lesson right there from harry. thank you so much. great to see you, hon. >> take care we are going to switch gears now and get a check of the weather from miss dylan dreyer hey, dylan >> hey, good morning again, everyone we're looking at the tropics we have tropical storm edouard out in the atlantic. this is the earliest the "e" storm has ever been in the

welcome back two years ago the headlines that riveted this country were dominated by the battle over immigration. as part of the effort to stem the tides of the crossing of the border the trump administration imposed a zero tolerance policy and it resulted in thousands of children being separated from their parents. nbc's jacob soboroff covered that story from the beginning and he's out with a new book on the issue. it's called "separated an american tragedy. good to see you, my friend thanks for joining us this morning. so much has happened in this country since 2018 but take us back to that part of america's history. what was going on in america then >> it's good to see you, too, my friend

it is hard to believe this was just two years ago sometimes it feels like yesterday that i walked out of this former walmart, 250,000 square feet in brownsville, texas. 1500 young migrant boys were detained inside. hundreds of them had been systematically taken away from their parents by the trump administration and ultimately that number grew to 5,000 children in an unprecedented action by the united states government that had never been taken before and i'll never forget seeing that i'll never forget seeing children caged in the border patrol processing station in mccown, texas, under mylar blankets guarded by security contractors in a watch tower i'll never forget seeing you down there, craig, when we reported on this together. when i talked to hoda and savannah that morning. and what i was left with even though i was there, even though i saw this horror with my own eyes, craig, were questions about how this happened. how could this have happened in this country in the united

states of america? and the answer is it was a long time coming, but it was also particularly unique to the trump administration an action that was taken despite the warnings of people who knew this was not in the best interest at children that is what i detail in this book for the first time. things i didn't know in realtime it's why again i wanted to do it and why the parents and children i talked to for the book wanted to participate >> what's happening since then what's the status of these family separations today especially in light of the that, covid-19 crisis? >> reporter: well, it's so important that you asked about that, craig. there's outbreaks of coronavirus in i.c.e. family detention today and there are still children at risk of separation by the trump administration and what i want everybody to know and what they will learn from reading the book is number one, these have real human impacts. disastrous, frankly. the american academy of pediatrics and physicians for human rights both say this will leave life long trauma in the children taken from their

parents. torture was the word used by physicians for human rights. we should know that people have yet to be held accountable for this kiersten nielsen, the former head of homeland security, put pen to paper and signed this policy paper and signed this policy into place despite telling many of us that it's a policy that never existed. she was warned that it was potentially unconstitutional and violates the rights of the migrants that were coming to this country you'll see the documents are there, they're in the book play by play about what happened and how this came to be and how we were still here today, craig. these are things that i didn't know they were things we should all know we should all think deeper about our country and how we are treating who are coming here for refuge because this is stuff still taking place right now >> jacob soboroff. i remember being there with you in brownsville you're right it's a story that stays with you on a number of different levels. the book is called "separated. good to see you. be well.

>> so how do the days unfold at your house >> you know, it's pretty mellow over here. everyone's a little confused as to why we're still home. i think everyone's pets probably universally feel that way. we're writing music. i started baking you gave me way too much credit though i am very much an amateur baker. i'm no good. we're trying to cook a little bit more take walks >> tell me what you've gotten good at. what's the dish or what have you made that you're proud of? >> i've been starting to make cakes, which is a little outside of my comfort zone i don't know just -- there we go. there's one little chocolate cake >> beautiful you're nailing it. >> i mean, i'm trying.ook at you >> what else are we going to do? >> well, this would normally be the time where -- is your cat eating the cake? >> he was. >> this is the time you would be shooting "this is us."

do you have any idea when the cast may get back together do you have any indication of when you may be shooting again >> i'm not sure. i've heard conflicting reports i don't think there's any official word. we would normally historically go back to work this week. like, right after the fourth of july is when we typically go back i know the writers have convened a virtual writers room probably two months ago so once we get the all clear, i think from maybe local government here in los angeles that it's safe to go back, we'll be ready to go so i'm hoping that that's sooner rather than later. i know all of us who've been on zooms as a cast together and everyone is super anxious to get back to work >> well, we can't wait because we want to see new stuff mandy, i'm going to ask you something i was reluctant to over the weekend your ex-husband made kind of a public apology during this world of he said it was in the daily mail i guess he said he was sorry and he was sober do you believe that he's

changed? >> you know, it's challenging because i feel like in many ways i've said all i want to say about him and that situation, but i find it curious that someone would make a public apology but not do it privately. i am speaking for myself, but i have not heard from him and i'm not looking for an apology necessarily. but i do find it curious that someone would do an interview about it without actually making amends privately >> yeah. i think that that makes a lot of sense. and i just want to also point out i liked seeing your cat trying to get air time in the corner of the screen >> he wants to be up here with us >> mandy, we love you. we miss you. we can't wait to hear you back in the studio again. we can't wait for the final became a big star on tiktok, tabitha brown.
