order with escalating fines for those caught in public without one. it's not clear how today's proposed resolution might echo that recent letter. happening today a free testing site opens in one of the most economically challenged neighborhoods run by the city in the tenderloin. testing will be done each tuesday in the church parking lot. you must sign up in advance. developing right now we are learning new details about a senseless and sad killing of an east bay doctor. a family spokesperson says that 46-year-old ari gershman was offroading with his 15-year-old son about 100 miles northeast of sacramento. the family says a man on an atv drove up right behind them and for no apparent reason opened fire. he was shot in the chest.

what we're seeing about where we should be for this time of year reaching into the low 80s. for gilroy a high of 85 degrees after a morning start in the upper 40s and heading over the east bay looking at mostly upper 80s for the interior sections while oakland will stay in the low 70s today. reaching into the low 60s near the coast and some upper 70s for spots like palo alto. we head over to san francisco with some 60s today and the north bay that will warm up further to the north. air quaul has been an issue. as of right now it's looking pretty good. if you have breathing problems or any sensitivity it's a good time to get outside but later on today if the wind shifts things will change and we're seeing some of those shifts in the winds as it picks up. a northwesterly wind is pushing the smoke away from much of the bay area.

a slight shift could bring in that smoke. temperatures will start to warm up a few degrees in some of our interior parts of the bay area. san francisco will stay in the 60s so we will continue on with a wide range in temperatures. and, mike, you've been keeping an eye on the roads. how is it looking right now? it's looking great as far as the speeds go. we'll show you what i've been watching here. the sensors go. below and heading down to the summit, we had a lot of slowing starting to ease up. the construction looks like it's clearing up early this morning. as we travel to oakland at 680, reports of a crash there that might have activity in the fast lanes. be aware if you're heading up to the bay bridge. the bay bridge itself no backup at the toll plaza. the toll plaza looks very smooth

that virus can spread from large respiratory droplets and those droplets fall to the ground quickly. scientists say smaller virus particles can float in the air much longer and can be inhaled. the w.h.o. argues there's not enough evidence out there to support the claim. atlanta's mayor is talking about testing positive for coronavirus. keisha lance bottoms says she is asymptomatic and has no idea how she picked it up. >> it leaves me for a loss of words because i think it really speaks to how contagious this virus is, and we've taken all of the precautions that you can possibly take. we wear masks. >> keisha lance bottoms is considered a rising star in the democratic party and has even recently been floated into the conversation about possible running mates for joe biden. decision 2020, today voters

north of 680 on 101, a smooth drive there. the volume picking up right on schedule. we'll watch the next ten minutes. we may see a dip. so far no problems except for the alat this month. it's no problem we just know about the slowing there. back to you. there are concerns the largest brush fire could flare up outside of gilroy. it's burned 5,400 acres and it's just about 20% contained. dozens of evacuation orders are still in effect. firefighters say it started as a structure fire that quickly got out of control. firefighters this morning are still at the scene of a grass fire that forced evacuations yesterday in fairfield. that one burned about 75 acres near mountain meadows road. the flames came dangerously close to homes, about 30 of ne.

firefighters spent a long night knocking down a fire east of rodeo in the hills between interstate 80 and highway 4. as of 7:00 last night, the last update we got from firefighters it was 50% contained. later today organizers of a boycott against facebook will come face-to-face with mark zuckerberg. the social media giant is facing backlash over how it handled hate speech. bob redell joins us live this morning. demanding? >> reporter: the organizers of the #stophateforprofit campaign have ten demands they're going to stress during their face-to-face meeting today with mark zuckerberg including that face book ad dedicated to civil rights. refund advertisers whose ads were shown next to hateful content and among other demands

submit to third party audits of hate speech and misinformation on the site. a coalition of civil rights organizations formed this campaign to pressure advertisers to stop spending on facebook's platform. and they did this over at facebook's handling of hate speech. hundreds of businesses have since pulled ads. recent additions include walgreens, best buy, ford and adidas. in response mark >> to crack down on voter suppression and fight hate speech. >> we need concrete measurable change and we need it now. >> clearly advertisers don't want to either. >> reporter: facebook's top 100 advertisers account for just 6% of its ad revenue. it is pointed out facebook had 8 million advertisers. so in that respect this will be a drop in the bucket. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> thanks, bob. california set a record for most new cases of coronavirus in a single day. counties reported more than 8,200 cases just yesterday breaking a record set just last week. the new numbers in the bay area now show there are more than 28,000 cases and more than 600 people who have died with solano county reporting the most cases followed by contra costa county and santa clara county. with no letup in sight more bay area counties may have no choice but to dial back on the reopenings. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live to explain the issues. north bay leaders are struggling with, cierra. >> reporter: counties that remain on that monitoring list for three consecutive days are required to make some changes to some of their businesses. the biggest that indoor dining. some include the indoor museums

and family entertainment centers but two-counties in the north bay, napa and sonoma, their leaders are confident they will, unfortunately, have to make some of those restrictions this week. according to "the press democrat" and sonoma county we should know this week if they've met the threshold. numbers are delayed by a day because of the holiday weekend. health experts are seeing their numbers on the rise. and per the governor's orders both are preparing for indoor dining, family entertainment centers like bowling. those closures are expected to be in place three weeks. this has played out in mar halt sunday. restaurants can offer carryout and outdoor seating. it's not just to business owners here locally in the north bay.

statewide 52 restaurants received citations from the alcoholic beverage control bureau for not complying with the state order. so you can see here the state taking restrictions and closures very seriously as the covid numbers are on the rise. >> causing a lot of heartache for businesses out there. there is a lot of confusion in the south bay as state agents crack down on the outdoor dining. some had to do with the application, but it turns out the county never had an approved application from the state. so now they're updating that application while maintaining contact with state leaders. >> it doesn't make sense, i don't think, in the sense that preventing outdoor dining in morgan hill while allowing indoor dining in san mateo is sort of nonsense. >> santa clara county also argues outdoor dining was not

prohibited in the state's order. state lawmakers say they are growing frustrated with people still not getting their unemployment benefits from the state. "the sacramento bee" reports this morning the edd, the employment development department, will expedite unfulfilled claims filed in march and iapril. there is no timetable when they might receive the benefits. the department says it does have additional staff working on those particular requests. san francisco is boosting renter protections to help tenants make it in the bay. supervisors of the land use and transportation committee voted to extend the rent moratorium until september. they say there's bigger concern for landlords than the rent increase. more people are breaking their leases. it's projected that vacancy rates coulding up 20%.

this is before the end of the pandemic. in march it was under 4%. crews are reportedly working on transforming beale street in downtown san francisco. the plan calls for a new transit only lane in transit center and sales force tower. it also includes new protective bike lanes. it should take just about a week to complete. we have seen some of those reconfigurations of the roadways. >> bicyclists have to watch out for themselves, too. >> some areas if you are going out cycling you will need a mask not just for coronavirus but some of that smoke we're seeing in the air. kari hall has been monitoring that. yesterday we saw a lot of it. you were talking about some

right now at 5:45 let's head over to cupertino to check out our temperature trend for the morning. a nice start to the day but there will be drifts of smoke coming in as our temperatures go from the low 60s to about 80 degrees. it will still heat up for the inland areas. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. weeks of protests tied to george floyd's death have now cost the state more than $70 million. that more than half of that money was spent on overtime by chp. changes at the top of california's prison system after a widespread outbreak among the prison population. the state's correctional health services announced a shake-up including the replacement of the system's top health official. governor newsom cited recent inmate transfer blunders that are now contributing to a surge in covid-19 cases among the incarcerated. more than 1,000 inmates have been infected at san quentin alone and it's believed six died from the virus. the state assembly will remain in recess after being postponed indefinitely due to recent infections. the speaker says five people who work in the assembly including one lawmaker have tested positives that decision is to protect lawmakers, staff, and the public. today is takeout tuesday and

southern california restaurants are taking it back. they're banking on some income as they brace for new restrictions so taking back of the takeout privileges. the indoor dining coming to a halt in san diego county for at least the next three weeks because of a spike in covid-19 cases there. outdoor dining, though, still allowed. one restaurant manager says he has had to comply with the changing health orders to keep his business going, but it's rough. >> up and down, yeah. real slow through the first couple of months. we had our locals which kept us going. every day is something new. different rules, this and that. we adapted. >> bars, theaters and museums are among the places that are closed as part of that very same health order. new for you this morning, international students need to leave the u.s. if their classes go online.

one. we also know the governor was in close contact with kimberly guilfoyle who has been diagnosed with coronavirus and there is concern coronavirus is getting very close to the president. the white house press secretary says the governor was cleared to fly by the secret service. she was also asked about the president defending the use of the confederate battle flag at nascar races. she says the president actually has no opinion about the confederate battle flag, though he's been tweeting about it. the president asked for an apology from race car driver bubba wallace for what the president says was a hoax over a noose. setting the record straight it was not bubba wallace who found the rope. it was not bubba wallace who reported it to nascar. the fbi determined the rope was there before wallace was assigned the garage at talladega. but it led to a heartwarming moment of unity among nascar

improved with a light wind. we're not seeing the winds blow the smoke into the bay area. in fact, it's taken much of the smoke off to the east as we get a light westerly wind this morning. then as we look at our wind forecast we are going to see as we go into early in the afternoon wind speeds at 10 to 15 miles an hour but then picking up later this evening and that wind direction makes all the difference on how hazy it looks, how much smoke we're smelling, and also how unhealthy that air quality is. so as we look at our temperatures, we're looking at some highs that will reach into the low 80s for the south bay, upper 80s through the inland east bay. while the coastal areas stay in the low 60s. we're still looking at a wide range in temperatures and a slight boost in our valley temperatures reaching into low 90s. nothing too extreme but it will heat up for the weekend and a lot more sunshine while the coast, san francisco, will stay in the 60s over the next seven
