infections -- >> my best friend. >> reporter: in dallas, shelly lost her mother and sister to covid hours apart at separate hospitals. >> i hope that my mom and sister's deaths doesn't go in vain i hope someone listening will acknowledge it and learn from it. >> reporter: the lives behind the numbers, as our national crisis deepens miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. a water shed victory for native americans in the supreme court. in a 5-4 vote justices recognized about half of oklahoma as reservation land, which includes the state's second largest city tulsa. conservative justice neil gorsuch wrote the ruling the trauma known as the trail of tears, the high court ruled in the battle over president trump's tax returns. nbc's pete williams breaks down the details.

>> reporter: in two landmark rulings, the supreme court said president trump cannot claim he's untouchable when faced with demands for his personal documents, but the ruling sent the cases back to lower courts ending any chance that the trump documents would become public before the election. in the first case, the court said a new york prosecutor can pursue a subpoena for trump taxes, investigating whether he broke state laws by reimbursing michael cohen for hush money paid to stormy daniels during the campaign by a vote of 7-2 with both trump appointees joining the majority opinion by chief justice john roberts, the court said, quote, not even the president is categorically above the common duty to produce evidence in a criminal proceeding. the president can go back to court and attack the subpoena as overly broad as anybody could, though that's a long shot. but even if vance does get trump's taxes, grand jury secrecy rules will prevent making them public in the other case, by the same 7-2 lineup, the court said the president is not beyond the reach of subpoenas from house

piru our gadi schwartz has more on the all-out effort to find her. >> reporter: a desperate search continues for former "glee" star naya rivera who disappeared wednesday afternoon while on a rented boat outside of los angeles. dozens of search teams scouring the lake for the 33-year-old who is presumed dead according to officials. >> there is no signs of foul play, no signs of anything that went wrong besides the tragic accident. >> reporter: rivera's 4-year-old son found sleeping on the boat alone, wearing a life jacket an adult sized life jacket was also found on board. >> i can't make any sense of what happened. we know we found a 4-year-old on a boat, and he said his mother never got back in. >> reporter: revieira's love for her son ed across her social media accounts her last post, just the two of us the search for rivera could take days according to authorities as the man made lake has limited visibility due to debris and murky waters cast members heather morris and demi lovato lighting up the

in portland took a violent turn after a driver fired several gunshots into the air during a confrontation with demonstrators. an eyewitness says the driver had been circling the road wildly and threatened the group when the protesters asked the person to leave, the driver began to fire a pistol in the air, while driving off portland police said nobody was injured and an arrest has not been made. senator tammy duckworth is keeping pressure on the trump administration asking if the dod is investigating whether any u.s. service member deaths are connected to reported russian bounty payments. duckworth also asked for all findings to be made public secretary esper testified before congress thursday, he said the reports have not been corroborated but the pentagon is looking into it. and will respond if necessary. nbc has not found any link to any alleged bounty offers. a lot to watch out for this
