breaking news out of livermore. a big rig and a live report on that overnight firefight coming up. plus, more breaking news, this time in contra costa county. an hours long standoff ends with the suspect dead and deputies injured. coming up all new details overnight on how it all started. we're live at the scene this morning. and high need students only. that is one bay area district's possible back-to-school plan. we'll ex palestinian hplain howk next. weekend. sunday will be the hottest day. we have a mostly clear sky as we see the sun starting to rise in walnut creek and our temperatures go from the upper 50s quickly to the mid-80s by noon, and it's going to continue to heat up. we're talking about current conditions on the altamont pass. for more on the traffic impact over to you, mike. kari, you're talking about the altamont pass. as we look at the entire bay, the speed sensors are great except for the altamont where it's worse than normal especially on a friday. you have two lanes of the westbound commute direction. only two lanes open. westbound your right lanes are open. the lanes off to the left, the three lanes are still blocked by the fire activity. a smaller fire on the eastbound side.

we're still concerned. let's take you to the breaking news, a brush fire fueled by wind. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is getting a vantage point. what can you see from the area where you are? >> reporter: we can definitely feel everything that mike was just talking about. we can smell the smoke in the air. this is highway 580 westbound, pretty much stop-and-go traffic. it was looking better about 15 minutes ago, so definitely reopening one of the lanes at least helped out. you can still see it is really backed up here. an accident caused a fire and it jumped northbound to the other side of the highway. it started eastbound side and then jumped to the north, to the

westbound and beyond. so that caused both directions to be shut down and you can see this is the aftermath. i sat in the traffic but they opened the lanes. it's hard to see how far out this fire got. you can probably tell it's pretty windy out here. we have another crew looking for other hot spots. we can smell the smoke. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect. kari? good morning. the altamont pass is a windy spot and i was just looking at some of the wind sensors we have there. it showed a recent gust of 33 miles an hour. that's the reason why it's a perfect spot to have the wind

turbines there. it has to funnel through the lower part of the valley and moving into the central valley. we also look at humidity in the area. 25% to 35% humidity and that also allows for that fire to grow quickly so that's something we'll be monitoring. hot temperatures this weekend. a deadly shoot-out at the end of a long standoff in knightsen. a gunman was holding a woman hostage. a s.w.a.t. team was called in before 1:00 in the afternoon and then at 9:00 in the evening a gunman emerged from the house firing his shotgun at s.w.a.t. team members. three of them were hit. deputies shot and killed the man

at the scene. our reporter pete suratos is trying to get the latest on their injuries and will join us with a live report in about 30 minutes. continuing our coronavirus coverage, the bay area added more than 700 new cases yesterday surpassing 31,000 thus far. two weeks ago state projections showed a rapid rise in six bay area counties. the latest projections list only solano county with spiking numbers along with contra costa county. marin is showing a decrease. it looks like students at another large district will start their school year at home. to jackie ward. students may not return to campus for quite some time. >> reporte matter of when, if i and the time line for that. right now the west contra costa school district is saying it

intends to keep its kids home when schools resume on august 17th. in phase one the nearly 28,000 students who attend the distr t district's 54 schools will distance learn online with teachers, they can deliver from home or the classroom with a limited number of high need students. phase two students would return in small groups, though. >> how important is it for you to be on site? >> very important to socialize with the kids and very important he goes to school. >> reporter: is that more important than the safety? >> no. safety is first. >> reporter: tonight at 5:30 the district will release more details about the return-to-school framework on zoom. the board will also discuss the plans for the fall at its next meeting on wednesday.

reporting live, jackie ward "today in the bay." tonight oakland school leaders plan to present a final report on plans to reopen. some parents and teachers protested the idea of returning to the classroom, an idea the district has been leading towards. school starts one month from today. santa rosa city schools are moving ahead with a virtual reopening. according to "the press democrat" school leaders approved a draft and plan to have 16,000 students learning from home. classes there begin august 17th. a follow-up this morning out of san franclondon breed now te she tested negative after being exposed to the coronavirus. the mayor was tested after learning that someone who was infected attended one of her events. she is self-isolating as a precaution. supervisor shamann walton was at the same event and tested

negative, too. leaders are trying to entice people to enjoy downtown again, outdoor dining expanding into the streets seven days a week. organizers call it eat, sip, and be in rwc. hand sanitizer stations are set up throughout the area with social distancing rules in place. the outdoor dining campaign runs through september. and in the north bay santa rosa is expanding downtown access even as sonoma county awaits possible tighter restrictions. "the press democrat" reports the city is closing fourth street between b and e street to create a pedestrian friendly zone for businesses and restaurants. new details after decades of denial. the san jose all girls school presentation high is finally confirming a.m.izations made by a former student for years. a history of sexual abuse. the catholic school issued a new report backing findings that nbc bay area first uncovered three years ago.

documents allege sexual misconduct or abuse by five former teachers and one former coach. it also details failure of former school leadership to act. one former student who says she was targeted calls those findings an affirmation. >> you feel a combination of reliving some of the trauma, but then also amazing relief your story is being heard and that people know the truth. the leadership at the school changed last year, which is when an outside investigator was hired to look into those claims. the school now plans to hand its report to san jose police. to watch our series of reports go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the investigations tab right at the top. right now at 5:09 as we start out a live look outside, we're 40 minutes away from sunrise and checking out san jose. it will be a nice start to our friday morning as we get ready to head out the door.

we're looking at temperatures that will start out at about 60 degrees. look at how warm it is in concord when we have winds rushing through that keeps those temperatures up. also creates some friction in the air so that keeps temperatures a little bit warmer. and then we're also going to have a hot afternoon with highs reaching into the mid-90s there. the coastal areas will stay in the 60s. mike, how is it looking for drivers about to head out? kari, the good news is the lanes just cleared from our traffic alert. so let's take you to the maps and we'll show you what's going on out here. talking about westbound 580 which is still completely jammed up coming off 205, basically back to 11th out of tracy for those familiar with the area. because the traffic has reopened to westbound lanes, much better news. that will cause a burst of traffic to head back out westbound over in toward livermore. while the big view looks great, i'm circling where there's

wall street set to open up lower, stocks ended the day in the red yesterday. closed off the lows as investors sought safety in tech shares. amid rising covid cases in states such as arizona and florida the dow falling more than 350 points. walgreens reporting disappointing earnings. focus today, inflation at the wholesale level. a new report highlights the

housing markets that are most vulnerable to the impact of covid-19. the areas that were at the most at risk in the second quarter were on the east coast and northern illinois. higher levels of unaffordable housing, foreclosure and mortgages under water in those at-risk regions. the west had the fewest at-risk markets. apple is making the availa the public to test out, several features long requested by users including the ability to change a default email and browser apps and picture in picture video while you use other apps. however, apple is warning it's not ready for everyday use, has bugs like it could stop working and you could lose all of your data. those are your cnbc headlines. >> don't want to lose our data. >> right. new this morning the ceo of the bay area-based company twitter is pledging $3 million to mayors trying to bridge america's wealth gap. jack dorsey tweeted he's partnering with mayors for a guaranteed income.

supporters argue it's needed for those struggling in the pandemic. it will help mayors in 15 cities. starbucks says it is going to require customers to wear facemasks at all company owned locations starting july 15th. the growing list of companies that require customers to wear face coverings. those who refuse or just don't want to do have other options including going through the drive-through and app purchase curbside pick yum and delivery. everyone's favorite science guy, bill nye, is going to tiktok to stress the importance of mask. >> the main reason is to protect me from you and the particles from your respiratory system from getting into my respiratory system. everybody, this is a matter literally of life and death. >> his videos have been posted million times and even shared by

the temperatures nice and cool in the lower 50s. you may even want to wear a jacket for the start. and then as we go into late morning, we're going to see the temperatures in the mid-60s. let's get a look at micro climates as we make plans today. as we go through the morning it will start to warm up at 10:30. the inland east bay and as we go into early in the afternoon here is a look at those temperatures. it heats up fast. we're at 95 degrees in concord at 2:00, and then as we go into this evening it's still going to be hot. so if you're thinking about waiting until later this evening for an evening walk as the sun sets, it's still going to be very warm here, at least it does start to cool down in san jose by 6:30. we're in the low 80s. tonight we're back in the upper 50s. as we look at our overall weather pattern. we have a storm system passing to the north, we're still dealing with the desert southwest heat moving into the bay area but then as we go into early next week it backs off just a little bit and allows for some of that cooler air to move in. we're still above normal.

here is a look at our seven-day forecast. the hottest day sunday as our interior valleys reach up to 96 degrees and then some 80s next week. san francisco, for the most part, keeps that natural air conditioning. heading over to you, mike, any other big issues besides that traffic alert? no, but, kari, the big issue is the traffic alert because it has changed. we no longer have to alert folks to lanes closed but notify folks about lanes open. now as we take a live look out there sharon's crew is still covering the fire scene west 580. the brake lights -- they're not brake lights, taillights with traffic flowing. it boggs down but all lanes are now open west 580. you see the darker areas where it was burnt out. west 580 your commute direction is jammed into livermore. now you see it moving here. the map shows you it's still backed up to 11th out of tracy. it keeps moving over in to north flynn road. then it clears but the burst of

developing right thousand the search for "glee" actress naya rivera is a recovery effort. she disappeared wednesday after renting a boat at a lake in ventura county. authorities were called about her 4-year-old son who was found alone sleeping on that pontoon boat that she rented. investigators say both had gone swimming and she never got back on the boat and was not wearing a life jacket. the sheriff's office now has released this security video showing the actress and her 4-year-old son setting off alone. rescuers say the murky lake is filled with debris making the recovery mission very difficult.

a judge in minnesota is issuing a gag order in the george floyd case. it comes after attorneys representing parties in the case spoke with the media earlier this week. now fired minneapolis police officer derek chauvin is facing charges including second-degree murder. three other former officers are also facing charges. new details this morning, president trump's former lawyer, remember him, michael cohen, he's back behind bars again. cohen is serving three years after pleading guilty to campaign finance fraud and also lying to congress. because of the pandemic he was released in may to serve time at home but authorities say he refused the conditions of home confinement without providing any further details. now to decision 2020 during a visit to pennsylvania yesterday joe biden spoke on a wide range of issues including the economy, climate change, and the upcoming debate. he weighed in on the president's response to the pandemic. and d

you can separate covid-19 and jobs. the jobs aren't going to come back until you gain control of the covid-19. >> the former vice president says final background checks for his vp pick have not yet begun. a former northern california mayor who denounced governor newsom's mask order has resigned from the city council as well. nevada city reinette says our governor does not have the power to make such orders. she received both support and criticism for her stance but did not give a reason for her resignation. throughout the pandemic our teams at nbc bay area and telemundo have been working hard to take your consumer complaints. >> chris chmura is here with a look at the first half of 2020 and it's impressive. >> reporter: good morning. the pandemic has been tough on all of us and we're hearing about it directly from you. for the first six months of the

breaking news right now, a fast moving fire shuts down a major east bay freeway overnight. we're live on the scene with how it started and why everyone should be on alert going into this weekend. plus, more breaking news in the east bay where deputies shot and killed a suspect after an hours long standoff. all new this morning what investigators say started the ordeal that left deputies injured. this is "today in the bay." good friday morning to you. i'm cierra johnson. >> and i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura enjoying time off. boy, they probably are feeling a little hot if they're enjoying a stay-cation, kari. right. it's going to be hot as we go into the weekend, and we felt that the past few days. it seems like we haven't even

had normal temperatures at all this summer. so now as we take a live look outside we're looking over toward martinez and it's going to be a hot day here as well. looking at our trend we go from 64 at 7:00 to 89 at 1:00. we'll talk about all of our micro climates and what's ahead for the weekend coming up. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? overall, kari, it's looking good despite a number of incidents that have come in to the chp. the maps show you scattered incidents but no major issues. the big issue is the slowing for the tri-valley west 84 jammed up. traffic in through livermore to sunol as all lanes have cleared for west 580. now you see the big backup. it builds out of tracy and heading to grant line road. all lanes are open. they were closed for a fire. more on that, right back to you. cierra? thank you. staying on that breaking news, the fire at the altamont pass lighting up the night sky and

causing traffic troubles. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda was there. sharon, you mentioned earlier you were stuck in some of that traffic. >> reporter: that's right. that was about 3:45 this morning, and it was very backed up. but then those eastbound lanes reopened so traffic was flowing smoothly. take a look, still looking at the westbound lanes here and with daylight you can actually see how far reaching this fire was. it started in the eastbound lanes when there was an accident just before midnight and then it jumped the interstate 580 northbound and so now you see backups westbound. you can see the brake lights and the fire and the charred hillside. this started about midnight. they were able to contain this fire to about 100 acres. that is the good news. as they open up the lanes again 15, 20 minutes ago, they opened

all lanes. for the fattistill a little bitt we should see progress as we go on through the morning commute. reporting live along interstate 580, i'm sharon katsuda,efinite. in contra costa county three sheriff's deputies shot, a suspect de dramatic hours-long standoff. pete suratos is live in knightsen just outside brentwood. we want to know how the deputies are doing. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. we know two of the deputies were recovering at a hospital at last check. hopefully we get an update at some point today, but we know this began as a domestic violence incident which led to an hours long standoff between contra costa county sheriff's deputies and the suspect. here is what we know according to the latest information from the sheriff's deputies. just before 10:00 a.m. they were called out to the 1700 block of green acres lane in knightsen,

just outside of brentwood. a female victim says the suspect broke her ribs and even poured gasoline on her trying to set her on fire. she was able to get away from the scene by the time deputies arrived. it didn't end there. the s.w.a.t. team was called out around 1:00 p.m. to try to get the suspect to surrender. they say at 9:00 p.m. the suspect came out of the home firing a shotgun at three deputies. deputies returned fire at the suspect who was pronounced dead on the scene. as i mentioned two deputies were sent to a hospital for their injuries. we expect to get more details later today. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." a disturbing discovery in the south bay. human remains found on farmland in south san jose. deputies say human bones were found near a possible homeless encampment off richmond avenue. investigators have not been able

to determine the person's gender but crime scene investigators spent a couple hours collecting evidence there yesterday. overnight california marked a new milestone in this pandemic. confirmed cases have surpassed 300,000. the second highest in the nation only behind new york. as we've been reporting the state is also setting daily records and confirmed cases and deaths. and now there's a shortage of testing kits and labs just can't keep up with the processing. places like los angeles are back to only testing people with symptoms and several testing sites in sacramento and san bernardino counselee closed earlier this week because they ran out of testing kits. bad news for local businesses in sonoma counselee. that county is expected to be added to the state's watch list today. according to "the press democ t democrat" indoor dining at restaurants, bars, tasting rooms will all shut down for at least three weeks, and that means only two bay area counties in green are in the clear. the decision is because of

sonoma county's rising covid-19 cases and hospitalizations. county supervisors plan to talk about ways to crack down on people who are not following the rules. don't let your guard down, a troubling message from dr. anthony fauci. he says the country is still in a challenging period when it comes to its response to the coronavirus. fauci making that statement at the hills future of health care. states across the south and western u.s. are experiencing massive outbreaks. we've been telling you about all of them. >> hopefully we'll have scientific advances in the form of therapies and vaccines to complement successful public health. >> the bay area is at the forefront of those endeavors. gilead science in foster city is involved in the clinical trial of remdesivir. a recent california law school graduates are stuck in a legal pickle tied to medicine more than it is tied to justice.

namely how they will go ahead with this year's bar exam. the in-person exam typically determined the fate of a person's legal career. bu this morning those bar exams are now on hold and the state supreme court is trying to figure out how to go forward. "the sacramento bee" reports one idea is diploma privilege where they would be licensed automatically and tested at a later date. but for now the exam is just delayed to early september. maybe just a few more months to study, i guess. in advance of a big civil rights protest planned for martinez this weekend some businesses are boarding up their store fronts. they're afraid anarchists and other fringe groups may cause trouble. the actual protest was organized by two groups inspired by the black lives matter movement and they expect thousands to march with them. police say white supremacy groups indicate they'll show up as well. last weekend a black lives

matter street mural was defaced sparking several heated confrontations. the two vandals have been charged with misdemeanor hate crimes. on the peninsula new details on a growing movement to remove a black lives matter mural in palo alto. this is a little bit different. the national police association is demanding the city remove that art project. the mural features a black liberation army member who escaped prison after being convicted of killing a new jersey police officer. it currently is along hamilton avenue across from city hall. this week the city's mayor said he and other city officials have no plans to paint over that image. berkeley leaders considering the unusual idea of taking traffic stops out of the hands of police officers. next tuesday councilmembers will consider this as one way to reduce police response to nonviolent crimes. this, of course, tied to reform and defunding, believed to be the first idea of its kind anywhere. unarmed public works agents

would enforce traffic instead. renters trying to make it in the bay might have some luck at finding some lower priced apartments in san francisco. according to the rental website rent in san francisco hit its largest decline. rent for one bedroom apartments down nearly 12%. in soma 19% decline. 21% decline in lower pac heights. and in downtown san francisco rent is down 15%. now to something good in san jose. a man whose long battle with coronavirus nearly ended in death is leaving the hospital today. >> that is good to hear. he spent more than 100 days. for 86 of those days he was on a ventilator. his son says his father was a triathlete for the last 20 years but suffered several organ failures, collapsed lung, and even paralyzed. he's now able to move his arms and legs again and is able to

breathe on his own. boy, he looks so different there after having coronavirus versus the pictures you see with his family. >> and to know he was such an athlete and it hit him that hard is scary. >> people need to see those images. we go out and about and everything looks fine. we can't see what's happening inside the hospitals. >> wear that mask. >> indeed. all right. kari, if we're getting out to get some exercise, with or without a mask, we may want to do it early. early in the day is best because it will heat up especially away from the coast and outside of the city. as we take a live look outside we're starting out in the south bay. it's going to be hot here as well. as we look at our temperature trend in willow glen we're going to start out with some upper 50s. at 1:00 we're in the low 80s. it gets even hotter today and some of us in the inland east bay and north bay will reach into the mid-90s. heads up about this and a look ahead to the weekend coming up. mike, how is it looking for

right now at 5:45 as we take a live look outside in san francisco i've been watching the fog rolling across this camera at a layer of about 900 feet and it's going to keep those areas cool. it will get thicker through the weekend. we'll talk more about the fog and inland temperatures coming up in a few minutes. it's 5:45. the second of two recent high-profile suicides. the reason we're reporting on this is because in the midst of a protest the body of two black

men outside l.a. were found hanging in two separate trees within ten days. a security video later confirmed one of the hangings in victorville. now investigators confirm there was no foul play in the other death in palmdale. family members called for further investigation, but authorities determined the person in this case did buy the rope himself the month before and had previously tried to commit suicide. the former usc gynecologist accused is facing new charges. prosecutors filed six new felony counts against george tindal. he pleaded not guilty to the original charges last year. the charges date back to 2009 but victims had made accusations dating back to the 1980s. the trump administration is continuing to focus on reopening

new details on a story we've covered for years, the all-girls school presentation high is finally confirming accusations made for years by former students. it is a history of sexual abuse. the catholic school issued a new report backing findings nbc bay area first uncovered three years ago. it documents alleged sexual misconduct or abuse by five former teachers and one former coach and details failure of former school leadership to act. one former student who said she was targeted calls those findings an affirmation. >> you feel a combination of reliving some of the trauma but then also amazing relief that your story is being heard and that people know the truth. >> leadership at the school changed last year. that is when an outside investigator was hired to look into the claims. the school now plans to hand its report to the san jose police department. to watch our series of reports
