"today in the bay" continues right now. >> the team is all back. >> mike is keeping his eye on traffic this morning. we want to start with meteorologist kari hall with a look at that forecast and that beautiful sunrise behind you, kari. >> yeah, my favorite time of the day. we're watching the sunrise around the bay area. we're taking it to morgan hill. we see a beautiful hugh hue in the sky. it's going to be a really nice

day. actually a little bit cooler compared to yesterday because some of us were hitting over 100 degrees for those highs. so we're looking at mostly upper 80s and low 90s. and we're still going to have some hot weather farther to the north. so we'll talk more about that coastal fog, drizzle and inland heat that is coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> kari, most of the commute looks standard. we'll show where you there is an exception in the east bay here coming down in and out of the trivalley. southbound 680 on the map shows slowing down toward mission boulevard. they had to block a couple lanes. rights two lanes in the southbound commute direction. we're tracking that. no major injuries reported. san jose, that slowing has cleared. the bay bridge toll plaza is moving well. >> to a different type of commute this morning. when it comes to bay area's road

to recovery, some wonder if it is headed in reverse. now there is seven day area counties on the watch list prompting a new series of closures. in not open. jackie ward is here with a look at what this means for a lot of those struggling business owners. jackie? >> good morning, marcus. it depends on what county you're in. a lot of business owners said they feel like they're getting yafrpged arou yanked around. 31 counties are now on governor newsom's watch list with seven in the bay area. alameda is the newest edition. in that county, restaurant owners found out late friday that outdoor dining was no longer allowed. they would have to go back to limiting business to take out

only. >> this was the last life line that a lot of people had. if that gets pulled away, there might be a lot more restaurants that will be closing. >> it was a similar situation in hayward over the weekend. the city went ahead with plans to shut down streets to allow for more dining. b street was closed to traffic. businesses could comfortably set up tables on sidewalks and in the streets. restaurants don't face enforcement from local authorities, they could still be cited by state agents. alameda county is planning possibly on filing a state variance and that would allow it for outdoor dining to resume. marcus? >> all right. jackie, thank you. you know what? this is surrounding the coronavirus and here in the bay area, i want to look at the bay area cases for you right now. santa clara county reported the

most yesterday with 315. more than half of the bay area's total. the counties where you see no number, they did not provide those new updates. california now has more than 7,000 deaths and more than 320,000 cases. >> state prison health leaders confirmed with us over the weekend new -- two new coronavirus cases related to deaths at s deaths san quentin prison. a total of nine inmates have now died. now last week governor newsom announced release of thousands of prisons statewide. will we'll continue to monitor the situations there. relatives of a man shot and killed by chp officers, they're demanding more transparency in this case. on june 6th, chp officers shot and killed this man in oak land. investigators say he tried to ram officers with a looting fro

oakland dealership. his girlfriend in the car was injured. today he would have turned 24. family members calling for the names of officers involved to be released. the chp is actually not required to do. oakland police handling that investigation. >> a powerful and peaceful demonstration against hate in the east bay. this is video from nbc day area sky ranger showing about 1,000 black lives matter supporters marching yesterday in martinez. yesterday's march, it was sparked by hate flyers found last week in the downtown area. along with recently defaced black lives matter mural on the street you see right there. that woman doing that. some people across the bay area, they came out to that march to show support. >> i saw them originally. and so i it was pathetic. i want to show support. >> there are -- there were concerns about potential violent

confrontations with counter protesters but that never happened. happening today for you, a camp outprotest. this is outside the berkeley police department. a group called youth protest the bay, they plan to hold a march and then camp out calling for police defunding. that march starts at 1:00 p.m. at bush rod park. they're supposed to pick up with talks on changing role of police in the city. >> they'll be discussing the decision to continue with distance learning when classes resume in the fall. district leaders announce that decision last week. the recent surge in coronavirus cases is cited in the announcement and made after another possible hybrid scenario with tables. the school year begins august 17th. >> similar story to talk about for san francisco schools. district is reportedly looking

to start the school year off with distance learning as well. but as covid-19 cases sta rt to subside, they may move into a hybrid mod well in person and online learning. the school board will make a final decision on the fall semester by the end of the month. things will be different for you. of course, the tours will now be self guided and each group must consist of only the people in the same household. and don't forget the masks are mandatory. >> you know, kari, you can walk the grounds there. how is the weather going to be if someone decides to do that today? >> it's going to be beautiful today. i mean perfect weather for the bay area. ♪ i look the spooky music we have going on. let's check out our forecast for today. at least startin those tourist

morning. we reach into the low 80s for this afternoon. it's going to be a beautiful day once again. especially compared to that heat we had over the weekend. it's going feel a little better today as we reach into the upper 80s and low 90s. most of us in the 70s in oakland. san francisco will be in the mid 60s today. we'll get a look ahead to the rest of the forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, any issues popping up for the morning report? >> yeah, take a live look out there. the lights registered at 601. then the backup formed because of lights were on. we didn't see a problem. but now we see, of course, all lanes are showing the build. now maybe because of this volume they turn them on earlier than in past weeks. we look at the map, we don't see a problem as far as feeding in freeway. it's only at the toll plaza where we have that backup. there is that crash in freemont. still tracking this one right

doing well. now laura, i know before we get to the headlines you have some more. >> that's right. the before the bell this morning, in fact. this might be the latest sign of a pandemic slowdown. we've got some new data from apple maps showing a new decline in requests for driving directions. after a sharp decline in march, requests for driving, walking and transit directions have been steadily on the increase. but after reaching a peak in early july, driving direction requests dropped by 6% last week based on changes in the seven day moving average. >> everyone was 90 days to fileif you were sti any other year, that deadline actually passed back in april.

>> i think you could have cooked your fries on the sidewalk yesterday. it's going to be cooler today. this is part of the reason. we're seeing fog rolling over san francisco. and it's kind of misting and drizzling right now. that's the way we start out the morning. but we will see some clearing as we head towards noon. let's head inland. we've seen a beautiful sunrise. this is actually a live capture of that sunrise coming over the hills from coopertino looking over the south bay. now where temperatures are going to go into the low 70s by late morning, reaching into the low 80s today. so still comfortably warm. and we're seeing it coming down for even a lot of our inland areas where it's been reaching into the triple digits. today, how about some upper 80s and low 90s? it is july. it is going to be warm.

we do still have that hot weather farther to the north as we check out clear lake reaching into the84 in napa. oakland reaches 73 degrees. san jose reaches into the mid 80s. the followi the fog near the coast, we see that continue through noon. we get sunshine and then back in later this evening. but it does help us with that evening cooling and so we're going to have some nice walking weather after dinner this evening. as we look at what is going on, we have high pressure to the west of us. some extreme desert southwest heat that is keeping it hot here. kind of backing off a little bit and allowing for more of an ocean breeze. but as we go towards the end of the week, it just gets hot once again for the valley. we go from the upper 80s to the low 90s.here. we're going have some well above normal temperatures reaching into the low 90s, extending through sunday and for san francisco, we're also going to keep our same weather pattern here. morning clouds and fog and highs reaching into the 60s over the

next seven days. mike, how is it looking right now for the reports and chp reports that you're seeing? >> we had a lot of activity earlier on. the activity now is at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights were turned on early. 6:01. the backup began quickly. they did a good job of keeping things move on the span. we still have movement at the toll plaza. the span is still in the green zone. that's what we like to manage there. the east shore freeway, the maze, no problems. slow drive just in the pass. 384 to livermore. circle at the bottom of your screen is southbound 680 heading to that mission cutover. it funneled down to that area. we do still have what is reported as the two right lanes blocked by a crash activity just before you get to the exit.

and the hidden smiles. the foggy glasses, and the muffled laughs. a simple piece of fabric makes a big statement: i care. wear a mask. let's all do our part to slow the spread. firefighters still trying to determine what caused yesterday's fire onboard a navy ship docked in san diego. 160 sailors were onboard at the time. 17 of them plus four civilians were treated at a hospital mostly for smoke inhalation. the ship was undergoing maintenance and most of the 1,000 crew members were luckily not onboard.

the number of krocoronavirus ca in florida is hitting an all time high. florida actually added more than 15,000 new cases and is now nearing 270,000. more than 10% oftested over the tested positive. and at least 45 new deaths have been confirmed since saturday. it is summer time. many of the summer camps have been canceled due to covid-19. some parents have complained that they can't get their money back. >> that's right. let's turn to our consumer reporter. this is potentially a class action case. we first told you about digit alameda academy. they host camps around the country and canada. parents told us at cad my canceled the camps then kept their money. the wiacademy says there is an

exception for acts of god and offering credit for future camps. a new federal lawsuit filed in court claims that act of god section wasn't in the contract when the parents paid. attorneys say digital media cad my changed the terms on june 15th after the pandemic started and removed language offering refunds for canceled camps. the suit also claims dma continued offering refunds in canada just not in the u.s. the suit asks that all parents be refunded in full. some campers say dma's offer of a credit for next year is worthless. >> at that point, i will have already applied for college and decided where i'm going. so it would be -- it will be irrelevant for me to use the program. they have not received a copy of the lawsuit so they cannot comment on. the lawyers are asking the court to make case a nationwide class

morning. they have restrictions to uphold to as well, right, bob? >> yeah. no confusion at least when it comes to the gym here in downtown san jose. there are a lot of precautions in place. one is you have to wear a mask inside and keep it on when you're exercising. you must have an appointment. they will scan your temperature to make sure you have a good temp. they have a uva ray machine that will disinfect your phone and your keys. you have to sign a form saying, hey, i get the rules. they also give you a bottle of disinfectant that you can spray on the equipment when done. back out here live, now you won't be able to use these pieces of equipment over here. we're talking about the ellipticals, the treadmills and that sort of thing. it's not because they're worried you about touching the machine, it's because it is cardio. you'll have elevated heart rate and a bette of

dispersing germs. you come over here using machines this is what it looks like, you see there is sand sanitizer stations. you have people, as i said, they're wearing masks. the employees are going out and the owner tells us that they will be cleaning on a regular basis. and as i mentioned, do you have to wear a mask. can i ask you aio while you're >> of course it's working. it's a little tough but it's good. >> do you feel like the precautions are good? >> yeah. these masks are good. it's been good. it keeps coming down but you have to get used to it. >> what it is like being back in a gym? >> amazing. four months, so good, to be honest. >> looks like you stayed in shape. >> i work out a little bit back of the house. nothing is going to be like a gym, seriously. >> thank you for talking with us. >> thank you. >> good luck to you. >> excuse me, as you come over here, there is another area where you can see where people are doing floor exercises.

they have the cones to separate people and social distancing, here to the left if, you use some of the equipment, they ask you to put that in the bin so the staff can disinfect. gyms are not the only ones opening today. so are outdoor public pools. take a look at your tv screen. here is a list some of the requirement there's. again, you must wear the mass whk you show up to the pool. you have to bring your own towel. keep your own social distance. tattoo parlors, nail and hair salons also opening up in santa clara county. we did speak with the owner of a gym here in san jose. they're limited on the number of people that can be in the gym at one time. the location is 39 and are you concerned about losing money? you maybe are not going to have as many people and worry about going out business. he said that is a concern. i think based on the fact they have a number of people showing up right now, he does feel good that they can at least ride this out. as i said, you have an appointment to go to your local gym. can you see for a monday

morning, they have a decent sizeded crowd here. ? okay, bob, thank you. now to a live look at that morning commute for you. and since the pandemic hit and more folks have been staying at home, air quality in the bay area has really improved. the bay area saw 32% reduction in emissions. this the is during the first seven weeks of the pandemic. so today county leaders and the bay area air quality management district, they will sign the cut, the commute pledge. so the goal here is to get bay area businesses to increase the number of employees working remotely when possible. that proposal would start with 22,000 employees countywide. had. >> happening for you to day, the san francisco zoo plans to reopen the doors.

today and tomorrow only reserved for members only. now wednesday, the general public being welcomed back to the zoo with the strict safety measures in place. indoor exhibits, play areas and rides, they're all closed. everyone older than the age of 2 must wear the masks and circle the zoo attractions in one direction. visitors they must also reserve and pay for their trip ahead of time. >> today if you head to the san francisco zoo,bad day weather w out there. >> yeah, with he know that zoo is always chilly. you'll see that through the morning. it will clear out as we go throughout the day. it's all clear as we go inland heading over to walnut creek as we start out this morning. it won't be as hot as yesterday. we'll stril a couple of warm hours during the middle of the day as we reach into the mid 80s by 1:00. and then we're going to see our

rates than anyone else. so they think kids should go back to school. dr. anthony fauci is now being targeted by the trump administration. they're handing out information saying that he has given out bad or wrong information that he made mistakes. very narrow public health point of view. >> i suspect we'll get a bill done. >> now, that was tim cane talking about congress and the fact that they want to try to get the legislation done. another big relief bill for coronavirus that would deal with unemployment and housing and health care. but they have to get republicans in the senate onboard.

steph curry is having a conversation. >> in between a little golf over the weekend in south lake tahoe, steph curry and several other black athletes had a very frank open roundtable conversation with the "today" show's craig melvin on race and social injustice. now the two-time nba most valuable player was joined by charles barkley and anthony lyn to discuss their views on race and how the sports world is combatting inequality and how they're having to have that very tough conversation. >> as a young father with a 7-year-old and 5-year-old, the questions that they're asking because they're being shown the images, she can't and you shouldn't really shield them from this. what did you take away from the conversation? >> any time we have an opportunity to speak on it and have people listen and keep applying pressure. that is important.

thank you. 24 national hockey league teams reopening their training camp today for a season opening set for july 26th. unlike the nba, players will not be kept in the bubble. camps are taking place at each team's home city. we hate to remind you sharks fans, the sharks didn't make the cut. >> that hurts us. >> you no he what? we can cheer ourselves up with a look at the forecast. sunny and warm in some places. >> right. and so it's been very hot and some of our interior valleys. we're going to still have some heat but it won't be as extreme. let's get a look at this sunshine right into the camera in the south bay. we wake up in the monday morning. its going to be a sunny day. we're going to see the temperatures starting out in the mid 60s. if you have outdoor activities, get them in early.

it's still going to be above our normal high temperature. we should be in the low 80s. but we're in the upper 80s here today. we head across the south bay. the high temperature will be in the south county. 90 degrees in morgue an hill today. for the east bay, we're also up to about 90 degrees. we're going to keep it cool in oakland with low 70s. palo alto will reach into the low 80s. we're still going to have some warm weather for inbay. san francisco stays foggy through noon. and then we'll our high temperatures staying in the 60s for the north bay. we're anywhere from the 60s near the coast to the upper 90s further to the north. as we go through the next several days, no major changes. some extreme desert southwest heat is what is causing bait area to stay very warm. but we're seeing that easing up a little bit. allowing for much more of ab ocean breeze to cool us off even for some of our interior

valleys. but then by the end of the week, we don't see as much of that. the so we're looking at our temperatures in the upper 80s. then trending into the low 90s starting on wednesday. we're going to see that continue into the weekend while san francisco will be in the upper 60s. no changes here. that fog rolling in early in the morning. sunshine during the afternoon. mike, how is it look right now for the commute? >> kari, we saw that second burst for pattern overall. we'll look at the map and see clearly that yellow is turning green already again. just a little focus right around the camera where we saw some of the cars tapping their brakes. the rest of the bay shows us zooming out. that is slowing through fremont for south 680 cleared getting towards that fremont tunnel and mission boulevard. a little build and that is it. livermore looks great. mild slowing for oakland.

welcome back. a live look for you this morning inside one of the gyms -- this is outside that gym in santa clara county. it opened for the first time in months. the gyms, hair salons across santa clara county can reopen today. of course, in all of the cases, there are extra safety precautions in place. so when working out, you won't be allowed to use the cardio machines. also, facial coverings, that's mandatory. you will have to reserve a time to work out. santa clara county is also allowing public swimming pools to reopen. >> there are seven bay area counties on the watch list. all of san francisco and san mateo counties are monitored. in most cases, health departments are blaming the recent surge on more people and. interacting with each other without mask or distancing. infection rates doubled in recent weeks.

it is retiring stricter rules for outdoor dining and indoor religious services are prohibited starting to day. >> this is really sad news to wake up to this morning. actress kelly preston has died. the wife of john travolta passed away following a two year battle with breast cancer. the couple were married for 29 years. they had two children. actually, they had three. a third child, jet, died in 2009 following a seizure. john travolta said, she fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many. kelly preston was 57 years old. this morning, a live look. you can see right here a navy ship docked in san diego. firefighters are still trying to determine what caused yesterday's fire onboard that navy ship. 160 sailors were onboard at the time. 17 of them plus four civilians were treated at a hospital mostly for smoke inhalation. the ship has been undergoing
