low-risk outdoor spaces like zoos and botanical gardens can open their doors with limited capacity and sports can resume without fans but indoor dining is still on hold meanwhile, president trump is once again claiming that the virus will simply disappear as new polls suggest the country is rapidly losing faith in his response to the pandemic our capitol hill correspondent tracie potts joins us with the latest tracie, more than half the country disapproves of the president's response according to the polls >> reporter: right, frances. this morning we're looking at abc news polls looking at the politics of covid-19 take a look. abc news found that 54% of voters, as you said, just over half believe that joe biden would do a better job dealing with coronavirus than president trump. 34% think that he would do better the president's approval rating is upside down with 39% polls approving and 57% disapprove of the job that he's doing.

that's a big one for republicans. and tax breaks for businesses although the president said if there is no payroll tax cut he may veto frances? >> tracie, thank you for the update >> the united states is not the only nation seeing surges in coronavirus cases. the global death toll is 600,000 according to johns hopkins university nbc's janice mackie frayer joining us now from beijing. janice, good morning tell us more about the hot spots around the world >> reporter: well, officials in hong kong are now calling the situation critical because they're seeing the case numbers edge higher. we're talking dozens of cases a day. so it seems like a smaller number in comparison to the thousands that we're seeing on a daily basis in parts of the united states. but officials in hong kong are worried that these are locally transmitted cases. among people who have no history of recent travel so it's the mystery of trying to figure out how the virus has reemerged and how they're going

to contain it from spreading we've seen the re-introduction of a whole array of restrictions in hong kong disneyland is closed restaurants are banning indoor dining after 6:00 p.m. crowds are also banned to try to get the situation under control. and we're seeing this pattern emerge in other countries, like brazil, japan, south africa, india has topped 1 million cases over the weekend in melbourne, australia, the city is still locked down. in iran, the president figures that 25 million people are infected there while in spain, authorities have told 4 million people in the catalonia area to just stay at home the world health organization every day is releasing these numbers. they are grim tallies. every day setting a new record it's why people are looking to some of the vaccine trials that are underway around the world. 23 trials are underway the ones that have been
