and a good monday morning to you. thanks so much for starting here with "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. i thought you were going to be an announcer for baseball there for a second. >> just practicing just in case. >> hey, team. i hope everybody had a great weekend. we'll get to the early morning commute in a bit. kari is back this morning. welcome back. good morning. thank you. all right, we're in for a nice week ahead, slightly cooler temperatures as we start out this morning. a live look outside in walnut creek. we are seeing a few high clouds moving by, but we'll see that clearing out around 7:00 to 8:00. once again a nice day ahead as our temperatures have been coming down a bit. we've seen drifts of smoke coming in, so we'll talk more about where we'll see that smoke as we go throughout the day and that smoke advisory that will continue. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commuters? traffic wise it's looking great for early morning commuters. wipe the eyes.

let's get out there and look at the speed sensors where we have a smooth flow of traffic all over the bay. highway 24, orinda, there may be a crash that's happened earlier this evening with activity still on the shoulder. i think all lanes are clear. the sensors don't show a problem. we're hearing about a brush fire near the b.a.r.t. tracks as well, but there's no slowing, no problem for b.a.r.t. either. we'll follow up on that. back to you, marcus. a lot at stake for parents and students for california's 10,000 schools. they'll be closely watching what comes out of a meeting today between the state's superintendent and school leaders. now they're going to discuss the new rules for the districts to follow. meanwhile praise for governor newsom for his guidance. newsom's updates include clear metrics for each and every school about reopening, when, and how to report those cases. high school athletes across california will likely learn today if they'll be playing this fall. the california interscholastic federation is supposed to

announce its plans for the upcoming quarter. football practice at most schools begin two weeks from now and games kick off at the start of september. it's possible football could be played during the winter quarter. other sports this limbo including girls volleyball, field hockey and water polo. let's talk about major league baseball returning to the bay area with the battle of the bay exhibition. the coliseum will miss one crucial component. you. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live this morning. and oakland has found a substitute to fans. >> reporter: correct, marcus. before the shortened major league baseball season starts later this week, the oakland a's will take on the san francisco giants. that's tonight and tomorrow in their final spring training game. but because of the covid-19 pandemic there will be new safety measures in place. most noticeable tonight at the coliseum in oakland will be the fact there are no fans in

attendance. instead they will be replaced by cardboard cutouts with pictures of fans who bought those respective seats and sent in a photo. a portion of the cutouts, by the way, purchased in the foul ball zone will benefit finding a cure for als. across the bay the giants had the day off yesterday, but a few players did show up to work out at oracle park. the biggest concern for manager gabe kapler is their health. he's trying to take care of his team during a pandemic. >> as a team we've put a lot of emphasis on following health and safety protocols and being diligent about wearing masks and washing hands, doing everything possible to stay healthy because we feel that's the competitive advantage. >> reporter: so, again, the giants play in oakland tonight for game one of this exhibition series. game two tomorrow night at oracle park in san francisco. you can watch both games from home right here on nbc bay area.

reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> that will be a treat to watch it. thanks so much, bob. hair salons and several other personal care services will get updated information on how to offer service outdoors. the california business consumer services and housing agency says it will make an announcement today. now according to a tweet the service includes those of hairstylists, barbers, manicurists and he e those allo those services indoors is san mateo. >> we probably don't have to tell you but i'm sure there's a lot of confusion about what's open and what's not. you can see pretty much everything is closed. san mateo -- no, that's -- san mateo county there, the only one with quite a few opens out there. things are always changing from time to time. we want to keep you updated with that on our website, nbcbayarea.com. you can find the latest updates

that we have there and make sure you go there because things are changing constantly. laura? >> that's right. maybe you want to get tested. there are three south bay sites opening up this week. the sites will operate from tomorrow through friday. two in san jose. the first is at the county service center on burger drive. the other is a high school cafeteria. the third will remain in gilroy at the south county annex. all testing is free and no appointment or insurance is needed. also happening today hundreds of workers at the north bay's largest hospital begin a five-day strike. 740 staffers including nursing assistants, medical technicians will walk off the job at santa rosa memorial hospital. after a year without a contract they're asking for better wages and benefits along with more access to personal protective equipment. providence st. joseph owns that

hospital. they tell "the press democrat" substitute workers will be covered in to cover all shifts, but appointments are being rescheduled. they call the proposed wage hike significant and competitive. a looming warning still ahead on "today in the bay." what the mayor of los angeles is saying could happen if the rise of covid cases does not start to decline. plus, giving back. the all new bail-out fund launched for kids' lemonade stands closed due to the pandemic. you're watching "today in the bay."

investors flock into more beaten up names amid positive trial news on a possible covid-19 vaccine. but that did come at the expense of major tech stocks like apple, like amazon and netflix which led to the nasdaq's first loss in three weeks. technology has been a standout as they keep growing during the pandemic. you have economic data on housing as well as big earnings reports from names like ibm, microsoft, coca-cola, verizon, twitter and tesla just to name a few. general motors plans to build a full-sized electric pickup truck with a range of 400 miles. gm has said it's changing the chemistry of its batteries to reduce the amount of cobalt and make them more efficient. it will be one of 20 electric vehicles gm plans to release by the year 2023. and here is a sweet story for you.

day at 4:45 in the morning. good to see you all and welcome back, kari. thank you. i was attending a weather conference last week. >> i bet you learned a lot. >> vianey held it down for you while you were gone. >> that's good. that's my girl. let's get a look at our forecast as we start out on this monday morning. we're seeing high clouds moving by, and as we are starting out with these clouds we will see it holding down the temperature for at least a few hours, but we have these drifts of smoke coming in from the mineral fire that's just to the west of fresno. coming through the central valley into the bay area making it up to the north bay. it's been higher up in the atmosphere so it kind of gives us a hazy view of the sunshine but it hasn't affected our air quality as much. and we'll see it also in the east bay as well as santa clara valley. here is what's going on. we see where the mineral fire is

now and that smoke moves through the central valley up into the south bay and east bay. once that onshore wind flow our ocean breeze kicks in and pushes that wildfire smoke further off to the east. so we're going to see that happening again today. the worst of the air quality will be during those early hours. high temperatures will feel very comfortable in the upper 70s for the south county, or upper 80s, i should say, and some mid-80s for the tri-valley. we're seeing cool while the inland valleys will be in the low 80s. we'll gradually see our temperatures warming up this week for san francisco in the low to mid-60s. at times the fog drifting in, maybe even mist and drizzle.

i'll be keeping an eye on that. any issues for the morning commute? right now the commute looks great. green sensors. a new incident popped over on the peninsula somewhere around sierra point parkway. it doesn't sound like a big deal but i'll double-check once chp gives us the details. we're looking to contra costa county and north 680 at highway 4. reports of a small brush fire on the shoulder. relatively close to some of their tracks but not a concern for riders there. and the bay bridge is just fine. right back to you, laura. thank you very much. i have a disturbing story out of the north bay. police are telling us this morning a woman stabbed her

mother to death and then tried to kill her brother. police say after some sort of altercation the woman began attacking. her brother is in critical condition. police say a baby and 3-year-old were also in the home at the time but were not hurt. well, happening now firefighters are making headway knocking down a wildfire burning in fresno county. that fire has burned close to 27,000 acres. it's also nearing 50% containment. that fire is making its presence known. contributing to the smoky skies. today the air district is ext d extending its air quality advisory through at least the end of the week. cases continue to spike in los angeles. mayor eric garcetti is having second thoughts this morning and

thinks the county reopened too soon. more than 2,200 people are hospitalized with covid in l.a. county alone. more than 147,000 people have been infected. 4,000 people have died. garcetti is now saying the virus is too strong to start relaxing restrictions. >> this virus preys on our division, preys on our exhaustion, in those moments we don't have a unified national front or as individuals think this isn't going to be a big deal. we have to be as vigilant right now as we were the first day, 100% of our strength. >> the mayor says the decision to shut down again is ultimately up to state and county leaders. a placer county governor holds indoor service. pastor greg farrington along with about 375 members worshipped together on sunday. meanwhile other churches across california held services outside. a church in la jolla transformed

a basketball court into a place of worship. scott wiener continues his push today for reforms in the criminal justice system. he is announcing new legislation to end mandatory jail sentences for nonviolent drug offenders. weiner believes the time is right for change. the new measure would allow sentencing alternatives for some drug offenses. today's announcement comes on the heels of his recent plan to widen jury pools to include more minorities. happening today california's attorney general xavier becerra willoin attorney generals in massachusetts and new york to urge president trump to protect the affordable care act. the trump administration is asking the supreme court to strike down the health care law commonly known as obamacare amid the pandemic. recently the supreme court indicated that private businesses could opt out of providing birth control to its employees under the affordable

care act. vowing for your vote. the unusual moments during kanye west's first campaign event over the weekend. and happening now for you americans are now banned from the bahamas. the restrictions coming three weeks after the island reopened its boreders to travelers. 49 new cases have been confirmed since the reopening. flights from the united states will stop immediately while outgoing commercial flights can start after wednesday. people from canada and the united kingdom and european union are not affected by that new ban. we'll be right back.

welcome back to you. it's 4:54 this morning. decision 2020, kanye west held his first presidential campaign rally where he criticized the historical figure. that event happened yesterday in charleston, south carolina. west ranted against harriet tubman saying she never worked slaves, she just had them work for other people. and said women who don't have abortions should be offered $1 million each. he appeared on oklahoma's ballot. it's looking like all stms go for nfl start of training camps at least from the league's perspective here. the nfl making that announcement with rookies to report tomorrow and everyone else arriving in the next week. the union is not officially onboard. the season is scheduled to open september 10th. a special thursday night game with the super bowl winning chiefs against tennessee.
