>> tom, thanks so much we are joined now by ed bastian, ceo of delta air lines airlines good to have you with us i'm not telling you anything you don't know people are afraid to fly right now. your bottom line reflects that so walk me through the process of getting on one of your planes from the airport to the flight to landing to getting off the plane. what is it like to fly right now? for people who are scared but may be considering it. >> willie, good to be with you thanks for having it the flight experience today is really positive. i know there's a lot of anxiety in the general public and even for road warriors who have been out flying for years, their first time back there's a level of angst that they need almost be walked through the process. the planes have been sanitized we electrostatically fog every flight, every seat

every service level before every single plane takes off the hepa filters are cleaner than the air you and i are breathing or the air you breathed in a grocery store or any other public venue we have space on our planes. we are serious about space we only book our planes to 60% full so there's a lot of space on the planes every middle seat is blocked on delta as well as the airports also have a lot of seats blocked. so from a customer standpoint and we get this feedback from customers. they actually see it a better experience than they were just a year ago i've got one data point for you. we survey our customers. our numbers are important at delta and we take pride in the service our people put out our scores this past june was 20 points higher than the june prior. we've already examined the flying experience. we realize people need some place to go. i think the angst is less about the airplane itself as compared to what you're going to do when you land the businesses aren't open the hotels may not be there. the restaurants, the theme

parks. so i think that's part of the equation >> let me ask you about masks. you announced earlier this week masks will be required on the flights by employees and travelers as well. what happens if i don't wear a mask on the plane? what's that process like >> well, we've been requiring masks since the first of may we've been steadily and rather aggressively stepping up our enforcement of the mask policy you cannot board a delta plane unless you have a mask on. if you board the plane and you insist that not wearing your mask, we will insist you don't fly delta into the future. we already have over a hundred people we've put on that list. we implemented a new procedure this week because we've had some customers indicate that they have underlying conditions that makes wearing a mask dangerous for them we've told them you may not want to fly, to reconsider whether air travel is the right form of transportation but if they do decide to -- they

want to continue to fly, we have a screening process with the university of pittsburgh medical center where the customer will talk to the doctor before they get on the plane to actually have it validated that they, indeed, cannot wear a mask >> that's the clearance to fly process. so let me ask you about your business now we just saw that you're losing $27 million a day. you're coming off the worst quarter in the history of the company. how does delta survive this? how does the airline industry survive this >> well, we've done a lot at delta as you may know when the pandemic started we were burning cash we were losing about $100 million a day in march so for the month of june, just 90 days later, we got that cash burned down to $27 million still a lot of money, but a considerable improvement from where we were. one of the reasons we've been able to stand as together as an industry as we have is because of the c.a.r.e.s. act and the

government stimulus that helped us pay our people and ensure our employees will have their pay. that's been immeasurasburns num. so the real cash burn for the company is actually better >> will you need more money from the government >> i don't know, willie. we're trying hard not to we've got a lot of opportunities to continue to improve our costs. we've got almost 20% of our employees that agree to retire starting august 1st. we have many more thousands that voluntarily are taking time off without pay. the employees are doing an amazing job of trying to keep the airline afloat we need the demand to come back. i don't know if government assistance is what we really need what we really need is a vaccine, some medical confidence back in consumers. >> we wish you good luck ed bastian, thank you for your time this morning. we appreciate it

custody. the shooting just the latest in the surge of gun violence. over the weekend 63 people were shot. 12 people were killed. president trump has been threatening to send in federal law enforcement officials to stop the violence there. breaking overnight, the u.s. abruptly ordered china to close its consulate in houston. chinese call it an outrageous and unjustified move. china says the action will hurt relations between the two countries. but the u.s. says it was closed to, quote, protect american intellectual property. meantime, houston's firefighters responded to calls tuesday night that documents were being burned in the courtyard of the consulate. police say staffers there were burning documents because they're being evicted from that building. for the first time in more than 30 years, walmart will be closed on thanksgiving day. the company says it's a way to say thank you to all of its employees for working through the coronavirus pandemic. but that's not all. walmart said its workers will

>> i like we're living in 30 minute increments. let's move on to grade school l hous and teens. we'll go to stephanie ruhle. here is a life in the day of steph. >> it's 8:54 i have to go on tv at 9:00 and i have three kids who it's the summer and it's an odd summer, they're all doing different things at different times. this is the holy grail of our household but none of it works without this schedule. do you know your schedule today? a lot of people happen to see my son reese came into the studio and we were going over a script, actually, and next thing i know there i was on live tv my kids have had to be the sound technicians. you know, it's been one of the coolest parts of working from home so i'm about to do a zoom interview, and again, it's in my

house. but the problem is i'm not actually giving 100% of my attention to the interview if i were in the office, i would have spent more time doing this homework if i wasn't working, i would be giving my kids 100%. he doesn't get to go to graduation or run around this summer great as it is to be around the kids i'm sad of what they're missing out on what are you sad you're missing out on >> just being able to talk to people and come home just live life like it was normal again >> steph, i feel you on all of that you're here with your three children steph, you actually spoke to an expert from the child mind institute about working from home with kids what'd they tell you i did. because like so many families out there, my house was heating up this summer and not because of the weather so i was trying to get through this

one thing i learned specifically about kids is the is this thing yet.elour kids understand this is our new normal for awhile and we've got to make the most of it for parents out there, i am not saying it is okay to have a shower-free season however, we can't sweat the small stuff. okay i know our kids -- it seems like they have a lot of free time but especially for teenagers, this is frustrating. they want to explore and take risks. they can't do it this summer you're not going to get a perfect teeth brushing summer. >> that's a good looking crew there. vicky, you've got three kids as well what can you add there >> amen to what steph said for sure the third thing i'd say is accomplish one little thing a day. the house. because these days can feel like they all blend together and become one big blah session. we have this activity jar. the kids have put things they like to do read a book, practice dribbling a basketball they do one of those things that

having their grown adult daughters home is if you can't find something, go look in their stuff. look what i found in all her stuff. and my products all gone oh, my gosh. here's my favorite cereal half gone already she's actually helped with groceries. we balance everything out. another benefit of having our young adults home, they can help with laundry it's late afternoon kind of getting in some family time. we don't have to facetime which is awesome for all of us jasmine works overnight, so normally we text message her but now that she's home, she's in her room. jaz, are you up? we don't get to be in the living room to watch late night movies anymore since she's been home. now it's her office. so i'm taking an opportunity to reflect on a few tngs. pretty blessed that we got an opportunity to have our daughter

thanks to steph and holly and elizabeth for sharing your stories with us. all right. let's turn to another mom working from home. how about miss dylan dreyer. hey, girl. >> hey, i love seeing that i actually feel normal again i don't know if it's allowed but i kick my whole family out to a friend's apartment during the show otherwise, it would be absolute chaos. >> another good tip. >> yeah. let's take a look at the tropics since they are starting to get more and more active like we've been seeing, we want to first focus on this area of concern especially down near the gulf of mexico especially where there's a 40% chance it could develop into a tropical system right now it's a lot of rain with that but it's moving into warm waters. another area where we have a tropical depression a little bit farther out to sea if this develops into the seventh named storm of the season, that would be the earliest we've had our "g" storm. it is forecast to remain as a tropical storm as it moves into some of those warmer waters. by sunday winds up to 60 miles per hour but we have to see what happens after it moves just south of puerto rico. certainly an area of concern

the normal date we get the "g" storm would be september 16th. everything is well ahead of schedule today in the meantime, we are looking for severe storms possible especially for the mid-atlantic region today with large hail and damaging winds out west it's dry and breezy so we do have a fire risk still. and down across texas and into arkansas we could see some thunderstorms as well. otherwise it's just continuing to be very hot and humid that's a look at the weather good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. let's take a live look outside in san francisco where it's all cloudy and we'll continue to see the midst and drizzle here for a little while longer. meanwhile the inland areas are starting to clear out. we'll be slightly warmer today, reaching into the upper 70s for the south bay and some mid 80s for spots like antioch. heading over to napa, in the 70s. oakland, 73 degrees. our near-normal temperatures continue. we will gradually warm up by this weekend.
