this friday. thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. how many times have we said friday and we're like 30 seconds into the show? >> friday, friday, maybe six. >> good morning to you. i'm laura garcia. we'll get to that morning commute -- friday morning commute with mike. but first the friday morning forecast with kari. happy friday! we are going to see more sunshine as we go into the afternoon but we're starting out with some drizzle here and some cooler temperatures and this is part of the reason why, a thicker layer of fog along the coast and here in the city that's going to transport some of the cooler air inland. we're coming down a few degrees from yesterday with the south bay reaching 78 degrees. 78 in palo alto. 68 in oakland. for napa look for a high of 81 degrees. we'll talk more about the weekend forecast coming up.kari road work which is good news for those doing the work. they'll be on to their weekend

very soon. when you come across the cone zone, be careful. i'm concerned about fremont, southbound 880. a construction zone around thornton and that is where a crash is reported. i think there may be a caltrans vehicle involved. we have a few scattered along the nimitz. more on that coming up. on the watch list the recent surge in coronavirus cases is putting a spotlight on the city of san jose. but santa clara county health leaders say the attention is misguided. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us now. dr. birx will be talking about this this morning on the "today" show. >> reporter: yes. she's talking on the east coast so we'll have access to some of that sound later on this morning. she could offer some clarification as to why san jose is now at the top of the watch list even though local leaders say they didn't have any idea about that. the city is one of 12 that the white house coronavirus task force is now tracking following

an uptick in cases. lumping the bay area's most p populous city with phoenix and miami. in an audio clip obtained by the journalist nonprofit group center for public integrity dr. birx said local officials should be ready to react aggressively to stop the spread of covid-19. here is what dr. birx had to say this morning earlier on the "today" show. >> texas, california, arizona and florida. those major metros and throughout their counties. i just want to make it clear to the american public what we have right now are essentially three new york major states. and so we're really having to respond as an american people. >> reporter: in a statement from the county of santa clara which is leading the response, they say we are concerned about increases in cases nationally and believe that this highlights the need for a coordinated national approach to address the

pandemic, something the president has failed to put into effect. despite this concern, again, local leaders say they weren't part of the conversation that happened just yesterday, but dr. birx speaking on the east coast so the "today" version on the east coast that's already aired. we will hear more and will bring that to you at 5:30. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> we'll look forward to that. thanks so much, kris. in the meantime cdc leaders will talk later today about new guidelines emphasizing schools reopening during this pandemic. among those recommendations announced yesterday in-person instruction should include social distancing, wearing masks, and keeping the same groups of students and teachers together. also using other areas of the campus for classrooms like gyms or outdoor spaces. the guidelines suggest transmission for children is low, but many administrators in the bay area say it is simply not enough.

>> i'm not willing to take that responsibility. i'm not going to be cavalier about it not only for the protection of our students but protection of our staff. >> state and local districts are making the final decision on in-person learning. new details this morning, sonoma county leaders considering hefty fines and even jail time for covid-19 rule breakers. "the press democrat" reporting supervisors yesterday showed strong support for fines up to $1,000 and six months of jail time. the final vote expected august 6th. the bay area added more than 1,000 new cases yesterday. here's a look county by county. at least 729 people b we learned a sheriff's deputy also died after a battle with covid-19. deputy sheriff oscar rocha

passed away last night. the sheriff's department saying on twitter in part he put up a courageous fight to the end and will never be forgotten. next tuesday marks one year since the deadly rampage of the gilroy garlic festival, but the spirit of the festival will still live on this year in a virtual setting. there was a virtual kickoff on facebook. the next three days it will be all things garlic. online with events celebrating one of the world's most popular. a small memorial will be held. that event will also be live streamed. the family of a little boy in the east bay desperately needs your help. he's fighting cancer, and they need some help covering all those medical costs. tomorrow a local restaurant will hold a fund-raiser to support jameson he eveverson.

he goes by jammers. he was diagnosed with an extremely rare type of brain cancer. his parents say he's undergoing chemotherapy at stanford for the tumors in his brain and on his spine that number over 100. >> if i can do anything i would rather it be happening to me. i feel helpless as a parent. you do what you can. you have to leave it to the doctors. >> we try to stay focusefocused. you hear cancer, especially in a 3-year-old, we're trying to keep the positive in personality and stuff like that. >> let's keep the positive vibes going. the fund-raiser is all day tomorrow at o'sullivan's sports bar on thornton avenue in newark. it will feature a menu with items like jammer smashed

nachos. help them out. >> sounds good, too. 4:37 right now. we want to go back to our pandemic coverage. san francisco's ferry building is now fully reopened again. i know it's confusing. all the malls were closed. now the building operators are saying it is no longer a mall but a transport terminal. all those shops reopened yesterday. less than one month into its new fiscal year b.a.r.t. is behind on a lot of revenue leading to a pretty dire situation. b.a.r.t. is taking a huge hit from lower ridership and is still nowhere near projections for riders even coming back. now the agency expects to receive even less money than it anticipated meaning b.a.r.t. will have to scramble to make up the deficit through loans or even reducing service. >> google is expanding its effort to hem more people make

right now at 4:41 we start out with some clouds this morning. we'll see our temperatures in the upper 50s. it is quickly clearing out for a beautiful day. some low 70s by late morning. we'll head over to mountain view coming up in a couple of minutes. and i talked about the nimitz where we have three crashes, well, right near the nimitz. the first one we talked about is at thornton southbound in a construction zone, so out of the available traffic lanes the other one at the top of the screen just before -- or just after you get off the freeway and a third right there at davis, again, the northbound side traffic slowing smoothly.

we'll check out more on the freeway coming up. good friday morning. i'm dominic chu at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's business headlines. wall street is set to open lower. investors are keeping track on rising tensions between the u.s. and china. stocks fell yesterday with microsoft and apple leading the broader market lower as there was disappointing economic news. the number of people filing for unemployment benefits was higher last week and marks the 18th straight week in which jobless claims totalled more than 1 million. in focus for traders today data on new home sales and earnings reports from american express and verizon. iphone fans may have to wait at least another month before they get to see the new version of the smartphone. a tech blog is reporting that apple is delaying its annual fall event until the second half of october.

remember, that normally happens in the early part of september. the company is being forced to push back the event for the 5g compatible iphone 12 because of production delays caused by the virus pandemic. apple is expected to announce four new iphones with the 5g model available later on in november. and can you spare a dime? how about a nickel or a quarter? even just a few pennies? the u.s. mint is asking americans to please use more change. businesses nationwide have posted signs asking for exact change because there is a coin shortage being caused by the virus pandemic. the mint says they are working toward resupplying but social distancing measures have put a damper on spending and people pay more with credit cards or their smart phones than with physical money. the mint says the pace of circulation is so slow right now that sufficient quantities of coins are not readily available where they are needed.

the kids play in the little pool, so we are going to have the kind of weather we want to try to cool down. as we get a look at our live start this morning in dublin, we're watching the cars rolling down 580, people heading to work early this morning. we are going to have a beautiful day, so maybe take that lunch outside as our temperatures will be a bit cooler for this afternoon. once again there will be a warm-up for the week. as we look at antioch today we're reaching 86 degrees. oakland will reach 68. we can see some low 60s for san francisco. then you head up to clear lake and it's 93 degrees again today. so we're back in the 90s. i'm also tracking the tropics, and this is something that will be making headlines over the weekend. check this out. we have a category 4 hurricane out in the pacific. this is hurricane douglas, and this will continue to move off to the west over to hawaii. a big concern for our friends and family there even though this will continue to weaken, it's going to cause high waves an of rain in south

texas today, just south of corpus christi. we'll see this moving in as the tropical storm the next few days. further out in the atlantic we have tropical storm gonzalo that is expected to strengthen as it moves to the caribbean islands and just to the south, the dominican republic and haiti going into the weekend. we're looking at some mid-80s for today in some of our warmest spots. we'll be in the 90s for the weeke weekend. next week it's looking warm. we're not going to see a major cooldown but in san francisco we're not going to see a change here going into the week. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? overall the speeds are great. out of the altamont very slow. getting into fremont looking southbound on the maps we see that the south bay and the peninsula are great. again, that crash we led off with still there in the construction zone may involve a caltrans truck.
