days from now americans will vote in the 2020 presidential election. it's a moment many political observers say will be the most consequential in decades. for more on this topic let's now turn to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. good morning to you, larry. >> good morning, kira. >> is the upcoming presidential election unusually consequent l consequential? it would seem that it typically would be but is it more so? and if so, why? >> you're right. every presidential election is consequential in one way or another. we have a series of issues that have made this one important. covid-19, an absolutely ravished economy and, of course, the last few months concern with social justice. all of these things coming together. they are burdensome for anybody holding office and burdensome on the american electorate. everyone has been affected by one, two, or all three of these things. it weighs heavily on all of us
7:25 am
as we go into this presidential election. >> and just about in the last week or two nearly all national polls have shown former vice president joe biden with a commanding lead over president trump. how unusual do you think this is given that incumbents often win re-election, win two terms un at george h.w. bush, but typically they get a second term. how important is this joe biden is looking to have a lead bush, the two examples in the last almost 100 years of incumbents who sought the second term and didn't get it. 85% of the time that's the case. this time joe biden has around a ten-point lead over the incumbent. so this is extraordinarily unusual. and the reason is because the president is not managing this
7:26 am
thing the way some people expected him to do. >> if the crisis was not the president's fault per se, why might voters or people taking these polls be blaming him and maybe blaming him at election time? >> yeah, it has to do with an old term many of us use, crisis management. you're right, the president is not responsible for covid-19 and it's not his fault that the economy came unhinged because of the need to shut down. and for that matter he didn't start all the social justice issues. the facts are once you are confronted with these things, how do you manage them, what do you do to make them better? clearly the president is not doing it. take a look at some of the data we have with respect to covid-19. it was back in march that the public said, okay, you're doing well. remember, the president first knew about this in january, did next to nothing about it.
7:27 am
over time 150,000 nearly americans have died. 4 million plus affected. or look at the social justice question, presidential mismanagement because you look and see what the president is doing and what the public thinks he ought to be doing. of margin of just about 2-1. once again we're talking about not the issues themselves, all issues at one point or another are a challenge. the fact is the president has not been on the side of public opinion in every one of these critical cases. >> so devil's advocate here, crystal ball question as i always seem to throw in your direction, does this mean joe biden is likely the winner? is it too soon to tell?
7:28 am
i realize it's only july. what does it look like? >> these 100 days are very important, very important to trump to get things right and very important to biden. biden has to get out there and campaign and that's tough in a pandemic. he has to make sure he gets the word out in a way that he hasn't so far. that's a big challenge. another challenge, biden not just against him. the intensity issue is much more favorable for president trump than for biden. people are very angry with the president. that's not enough of a reason. also, there's a question of what happens in the debates. there will be two, possibly three debates. biden is known for gaffes. he'd better not make any big ones. that's a problem. and finally, finally for the democrats especially there's this issue of overconfidence. anyone who feels good about this presidential election 100 days
7:29 am
out done realize how long 100 days can be when you're talking about this kind of event. overconfidence can be a real sore spot for the democrats. so, yes, they have their challenges but right now and, yes, it's that snapshot, kira, right now better to be biden than president trump. >> and not a repeat of the overconfidence as we saw in 2016 for the democrats. overconfidence and then a, quote/unquote/surpri quote/unquote, surprise. we'll see you again next week. and after the break vianey has her forecast. stay with us.
