lying in state at the u.s. capitol. it will be unlike anything we've seen before. we'll have a live report ahead. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. a very nice tribute to him over the weekend. good morning to you. it's monday. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. mike has a look at the commute coming up. first let's start out with the forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and feeling good starting out. it's a nice start to this monday morning in dublin. we are all clear here but we've seen the fog along the coast and over san francisco right now. 74 in oakland. we have some low 80s for the south bay and up to 93 today.

mike? the metering lights were actually turned on just before 6:00. the left lanes building first. the middle catching up. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. breaking news this morning, the largest covid-19 trial is launching in the united states. it includes 30,000 people from california taking part. we'll have more for you this morning on "today in the bay." a deadly overnight shooting in antioch at a 7-eleven parking lot. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live with what investigators are telling him so far. bob? >> reporter: one woman killed

and another man is in critical condition. the man and woman were sitting in the white suv there that's parked in front of the 7-eleven, laura, in front of this 7-eleven in buchanan in antioch. police tell us that a little bit after 12:30 this morning someone walked up to the couple, fired several shots at them. the man in the driver's seat was hit a number of times, has been taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the woman was shot and killed while she sat there in the passenger seat. sadly she is the sixth person to be murdered in antioch this year. back out here live there's quite a police presence out here. the crime scene unit. we know the homicide detectives were out here at one point. i'm not sure if that represents the bullet casings of evidence that the police department will be collecting. police do not know why these

people were targeted, what the motive was. they haven't said what led up to it. also not clear what, if anything, the surveillance cameras inside that 7-eleven might have captured. reporting live in antioch, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to capitol hill where washington begins its final farewell today for its civil rights icon, congressman john lewis. lawmakers as well as family and friends all plan to attend. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live with what we can expect today. >> reporter: hi. today we can expect to see this celebration of life that started in alabama over the weekend with that poignant moment at the pettus bridge to start to move to washington where congressman john lewis will be remembered for who he was and the work he

>> we need to pass the voting rights act and we need to make sure that all eligible to vote can vote in 100 days. >> reporter: a vote john lewis died fighting for. tracie potts, nbc news. coming up on the "today" show martin luther king jr.'s son reflects on the legacy of john lewis at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." republicans are expected to introduce their economic stimulus bill including another $1,200 to americans but it doesn't have the $600 weekly boost to unemployment benefits that just expired. propose capp payments to 70% of income. speaker nancy pelosi said that's complicated and supports the $600 payments. governor newsom says theed 600 payments could go a long way for californians.

>> an update in california. the state with 453,000 cases. another inmate at san quentin has died from the virus. in all 18 inmates have died. there are more than 600 active cases. mourning the death of a second worker from the virus. they posted condolences over the weekend for the family of valerie leon. the senior deputy died from the virus last thursday. now to our special coverage of the garlic gilroy festival. tomorrow will mark one year since a gunman killed three at the festival and wounding so many others.

some people remain traumatized after that. they're finding a lot of help through horses. a nonprofit in gilroy that offers equine therapy. they started a group for teenagers who attended the festival. the location alone has helped survivors. >> a lot of people didn't want to be outdoors or be in an open space. to the ranch where the horses are and meet it's a peaceful seclude setting. >> it helped victims regain their confidence and trust. now over the next few days stay with us for special coverage of gilroy strong one year later. a series of stories and live interviews remembering the heroes. search gilroy strong.

kari, i know you've been tracking that and as we see on the screen, 61. that sun rise behind you now is something to smile about this morning. it is. it's a beautiful start to our monday morning. we can't even see that because we have the clouds that have settled in. when we go above it from the cupertino hills this is the view. let's go through our temperature trend with upper 60s by 10:00. take in the sunshine. as it heats up to 93 degrees in antioch today we're in the 90s in the south county. oakland today and 84 today. we'll talk about what's ahead the rest of the week in a few minutes.

the way the morning shapes up for us we will start out with clouds and temperatures in the low 60s. a beautiful and comfortable day. the backup is there and metering lights are on. what the signs are coming up. and good morning. a very happy morning to you. "the wall street journal" is telling doigoogle employees the will be out until next summer at the earliest. a year from today. we are seeing more and more pessimistic reaction. mcdonald's said everyone has to wear a mask, all customers, no matter the location of the mcdonald's.

remember, 2,657 americans who were alive on friday didn't make it to monday. santa clara's intel pulling the dow lower as the stock tumbled. the chip maker says it will delay making some chips. wall street would like to see all of the benefits in washington continue. we're going to hear more from companies as well. we are in earnings season when publicly trading companies have to reveal to investors. these will be important because they will give us an idea how the companies fared during the shutdown. the fed meets this week. there's not a lot they can do other than reassure the markets and keep credit flowing, keep the economy alive. the history making

70% are either completely out of boats or they have really low inventory. there are a lot of waiting lists for harbor slips. if you're just joining us this morning we have been talking about love during the pandemic or at least finding love. i just talked to a friend, laura, who is just upset that he can't even date right now. some people say there are a lot of different ways to find someone. a brooklyn woman went to a park and set up a table with a sign that said do you miss dating? i do. than 30 dates that very day following social distancing rules, of course. >> what was it like going on dates masked? >> it was a moment where we just held ourselves in agreement that we were going to look each other

soak up the sun, have one-on-one time. it's going to be a beautiful day and take a look at the way we're starting looking to the hills to dublin. it's a beautiful sun rise. a nice afternoon. you can see the fog near the coast that really doesn't clear out too much today. if you're going to the beach, you will have to fight with those clouds and maybe get some peeks of sunshine. it will be comfortable as our noontime temperatures in oakland will be at 68 degrees. upper 70s in the lunch time hour there.ireld we're at 89 degrees.

that fog rolls right back if no major changes in our pattern. we're still going to see a lot of microclimates. we'll keep it breezy by the end of the week but heating up for the weekend. here is how our forecast goes. some low 90s today. not by much. we're looking at some mid-80s by thursday and then we're going to heat up for the weekend. plan on it being a hot one in the valleys. san francisco will warm up more for saturday and sunday with more sunshine reaching into the 70s. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the roads. anything new coming up now? no major problems but there was a surprise to the bay bridge the last half hour. the metering lights were turned

on just before 6:00 in the morning. that's really early. the map will bottom arrow is the bay bridge toll plaza. highway 37 shows more slowing over to sears point. that area is showing slowing. the experts must have seen more traffic on the east shore freeway heading west eventually and that may be why they turned the metering lights on early. the bridge is moving smoothly. a little build for highway 84 heading into livermore and sunol. no problems as far as the speeds go and the south bay has a nice drive. a volume build, no problems. back to you. all right. picking up out there. it's 6:20 right now. up next on "today in the bay" nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: she's on the front lines but is unable to get a

nbc bay area responds to a south bay nurse who had trouble making and taking advantage of a cellular service perk for first responders. >> that's right. so she asked nbc bay area's investigative reporter chris chmura for his help. >> reporter: good morning. diana looked to take advantage of this deal for first responders advertised on the verizon website. it says giving more to those who give the most with packages now as low as $30 per month. diana said she enrolled in early may and provided proof she's a nurse. but by mid-july no discount at all. so she wrote us for help. we contacted verizon. it responded directly to diana. she then wrote us and said this. verizon executive customer service explained the offer in a way the others couldn't or didn't. so i'm seeing a $17 a month discount. thank you for facilitating the issue for me, smiley face, diana. that will save diana $612 over

"today in the bay" continues right now. and here we go on a monday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to that morning commute and see if things are picking up out there right now. first a monday morning forecast, a nice day ahead, kari? we'll have a beautiful view. checking out walnut creek, temperatures nice and cool again this morning. a lot of sunshine as we head into the upper 70s by noon and low 80s in the early afternoon. now it's still going to be warm in a lot of our interior valleys but expect it to also stay cool along the coast. the weather you had yesterday continues today. we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? the first view we're going

to show you is the toll plaza. it's looking full. i haven't seen anything unusual about the approach. highway 37 to the north is evening out to its typical build and pattern. there may be a grass fire. the rest of the bay an easy drive. marcus, i'm hopeful about the story you have. the world's largest covid-19 vaccine trial is launching here in the united states. it will include 30,000 people californians will help in the research. researchers from uc san diego will take part in this as well. that trial is based on a vaccine prototype developed by the pharmaceutical company moderna. one of three participating trial sites in the region is expected to enroll about 500 people.

speaking of people, more of them are letting their guards down. cases continue to spike with people gathering, getting more reckless with their health and gathering with family and friends. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live with the warning about the potential impact. kris, we're talking about even the smaller gatherings people thought might be safe but not necessarily the case. >> reporter: no question a lot of us are over it and ready to socialize. just because we're over it doesn't mean the pandemic is over. the world health organization described it with a lot of gravity within the last few hours. this is the sixthth time a global health emergency has been declared under the international health regulations and the leader of the w.h.o. says it is the most severe. people are starting to gather socially. maybe you saw people hanging out in your community or pictures posted to social feeds.

health leaders say those gatherings are creating covid clusters. data shows that 40% of total cases are related to parties, social gatherings and traveling. 65% are among 18 to 50-year-olds. fines range up to $1,000 for repeat offenders. a family's swim party ended with almost everyone infected with covid-19. >> we had two people over to come and swim. we had this person over to come and swim or we had dinner with these people. oh, okay, let's add them all together and put them in one room. we've been around each other already. where is the harm? >> reporter: now more on the national picture coming up on the "today" show after this newscast but here in the bay

area social gatherings or social bubbles up to a dozen people are allowed in five different counties. however, with covid cases still trending upward they are highly discouraged. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." hard for a lot of people who want to see their friends and family. take the time to follow the guidelines. >> it's hard but very important. covid-19 cases are surging. alameda county now with more than 10,000 cases, the most really of all the counties in the bay area. in all the bay area has more than 46,000 cases and at least 750 deaths. more restrictions are very likely. in the bay area eight-counties are also on the governor's watch list. all but san mateo. any county on the watch list for more than three days just roll

back reopenings and that includes closing gyms, churches, indoor malls and hair salons. cleanup will continue later this morning at oakland's superior courthouse. that's where protesters smashed windows, spray painted and even set fire to one of the entrances. protesters targeted the federal courthouse. the night ended in chaos after starting as a rally to support the protest in portland. some believe activists are going too far. >> what goes through my mind, this is backfiring on peaceful people and the city of oakland. like i said, trump could play this all the way up until november 3rd. >> observiakland mayor libby sc said we celebrate passionate protests. but oaklanders need to know when they attend protests after dark they may be providing cover for agitators who are more intent on

stoking unrest than advancing racial justice. developing right now in portland another chaotic night where protesters clashed with federal officers. and someone was even shot. that shooting happened near the epicenter of the protests. authorities detained two people. the victim survived. it's not clear if the shooting is tied to the protests. in austin, texas, authorities say a driver who shot and killed an armed black lives matter protester saturday night is cooperating with those investigators. they say the man who died was carrying a rifle and the driver called police shortly after firing the shot and then taking off telling police someone pointed a gun at him. happening now the hawaiian islands have avoided a direct hit from hurricane douglas which passed nearby overnight. as a category 1 storm. make no heavy rain

an storm surges, in texas, corpus christi, is cleaning up after hanna moved through this weekend. there was widespread flooding and thousands remained without power. here we go kicking off the season, kari. a very busy hurricane season as we track the tropics. a good thing douglas didn't make a direct hit on the hawaiian islands passing to north of kauai but producing rain bands, high winds and storm surge. we are still seeing some heavy rain there. that will continue in those areas today as hanna continues to weaken. as we come back home we're looking at a wide range in temperatures again today with a cool coast, some low 60s in half noon bay and for palo alto we're

reaching into the low 80s. 83 for san jose. and farther to the north in clear lake today we're reaching 96 degrees. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week. mike, how is it looking now for the commute? kari, the big view, the big picture of the bay shows a nice flow of traffic. speed sensors -- as i clear my throat, the roadways are moving clearly. take a look at the tri-valley. typical slowing out of the altamont and that's it. pretty mild. i do need to take you up to the north bay where we have a traffic alert for highway 12 out of american canyon heading to chardonnay golf course. a grass fire just to the north side so they have traffic control but lanes are still able to get through the area. we'll send it over to bob. >> reporter: i'm bob redell with breaking news in antioch where a woman has been shot and killed while parked in front of the 7-eleven. a man with her in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

today as we keep some seasonable weather. we're looking at that traffic control. west highway 12 between i-80 and chardonnay golf course. a woman shot dead and a man hurt overnight in antioch, the city's third homicide in the past three weeks. "today in the bay's" bob redell has been live at the scene all morning. have you learned anything new, bob? >> reporter: right now we're trying to figure out if police will be releasing any suspect information. what happened around 12:30, laura, a man and woman were seated in the white suv here at buchanan in antioch. that's when someone walked up to them, fired several shots into their vehicle. the man in the driver's seat was hit a number of times, had been taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

the woman shot and killed was in the passenger seat where we believe she still is until the coroner arrives. sadly the sixth person to be murdered in antioch. a number of police out here, homicide detectives have been out here, csi has been out here. police have not indicated why these people were targeted. not clear what, if anything, ar captured. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." back to work state lawmakers returned to sacramento today. this is after an extended break due to the outbreak. the legislature closed earlier this month after six lawmakers and staff tested positive for covid-19. lawmakers now have a lot to get through before the legislative session ends next month including eviction protections and workers compensation for those infected.

breaking for you this morning, one of the president's closest advisers has coronavirus. >> bloomberg says it's his national security adviser. right, which most presidents would meet with their national security adviser every day, maybe several times a day. so we're talking about robert o'brien, the acting national security adviser. bloomberg the first to report that he apparently had a family event. that's where they think he got it. he tested positive. he has been out of the office, we understand, since last week. the national security adviser probably talks and is in closer connection to the president than anyone else on the staff save the chief of staff, certainly more than, say, the vice president. the white house has not confirmed the reports and has not given us any other information. otherwise it's 99 days -- in

other news, it's 99 days until the election. many polls show joe biden is ahead. biden, if elected -- if the election were today, he would become the next president of the united states. then again, polls have said different things to us in the past, haven't they? it is the most lopsided meteorology, in fact, since the clinton/dole race in 1996. analysis shows that bob dole was losing by the same amount that biden leads trump. clinton won that easily. age a big question in the race. bob dole at the time was 73. had he won he would have been the oldest person ever elected to the office of the presidency. >> wisdom comes from age, experience and intelligence. and if you have some of each and i have some age and some experience and some intelligence, that adds up to wisdom.

>> bob dole was 73 in that recording. president trump is 74 right now. joe biden is 77. the same age ronald reagan was at the end of his two-term presidency. president trump says he's too busy to throw out the first pitch at a yankees game in august. video of him at game five of the world series back when people could actually go to baseball games. the president says he'll reschedule. over the weekend president trump re-tweeted a tweet his campaign made back in april criticizing president barack obama for golfing. shouldn't do it during a pandemic, the message said. also this weekend, president trump went golfing. the white house distributed this picture of the president and former quarterback brett favre out on the links. the president travels to north carolina today. we'll be covering that. certainly that breaking news that robert o'brien has tested

sitdown interview with gilroy's mayor. 6:49 right now on your monday morning. coming off a really nice weekend, let's see what the weather holds for today, kari. >> i know right now in san francisco you can't see anything. this is a look at that view. we head inland. this is looking at walnut creek. a wide range in temperatures and microclimates along with our sky cover. our temperatures and the trend for today. expect it to stay in the 60s near coastline with all of that fog there. in the cupertinoe at 78 degrees. some of us will feel some warmer air. this is not too bad. that continues today.

now 8:00 is right before sunset and the perfect time to go for a walk because all of us will have a nice, cool ocean breeze. we're coming back to the mid-70s and the fog continues to roll back in for tonight. we'll have a couple quick moving storm systems giving us at times breezy winds. no major changes to our weather pattern. end of the week it heats up a few more degrees and we're looking at our inland valleys reaching into the 90s. today we're up to about 90 degrees. in time for thursday, friday looking seasonable, but then check out the weekend. plan on it being hot reaching into the mid-90s in the valleys on sunday. as we check out san francisco it will warm up with more sunshine by the weekend. mike, you've been watching the commute. anything new poppi u between cordelia heading to

napa, chardonnay golf course is a good marker there. there is one lane closed. the power lane is down and there is a fire in the area. that is a commute area. we have highway 37, a little slowing out of vallejo and the bay bridge with the backup. the rest of the bay shows a clear drive. happening now for you breaking news to tell you about this morning on the coronavirus outbreak rattling major league baseball. the marlins have canceled tonight's home opener after the team says four players tested positive for covid-19. the news coming down moments ago. sources are telling espn that it is now actually eight players who have tested positive along with two coaches. the team was supposed to fly home yesterday from philadelphia but that plane never left. if that espn report is accurate the team has had 14 coronavirus cases since last week.

welcome back. it's 6:56. you're watching "today in the bay." the breaking news to tell you about this morning the world's largest covid-19 vaccine trial is launching in the united states and will include 30,000 people and californians will be a part of that. the trial is based on the vaccine prototype developed by moderna. uc san diego is one of three participating trial sites in the western region and it expects t. public health leaders a a leading to cov masks or keeping social distance. and the warnings are urgent because new data shows 40% of new cases in alameda county are linked to parties, social gatherings and travel. 65% of new cases are among people aged 18 to 50. after being closed for months the oakland zoo is set to
