ro a very good monday morning to you. i'm laura garcia. here is a look at what's happening now. >> reporter: i'm scott mcgrew. google has told employees not to come back into the office until next july. so a year from now. this first reported by "the wall street journal." that is win of the longest stay-at-home periods that we've heard of so far. we're hearing more of this as the pandemic grows worse not better. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez with a new warning that small big covid clusters. in oakland police issued warnings and citations at lake merritt to people not wearing masks or keeping social distance and the warning is your generality. new data shows 40% of new cases in alameda county are linked to parties, social gatherings and

travel. 65% of new cases are among people aged 18 to 50. social gatherings are allowed in five bay area counties but are highly discouraged. all right. the sun breaking through in many parts of the bay area. kari has a look at that forecast. here's a live look outside in san jose as we enjoy some sunshine, hopefully a little bit of time to get out and enjoy it especially early while the temperatures are nice and cool. it will warm up to 83 degrees today in the south bay. 90 in livermore. we have some low 90s in parts of the inland east bay and some upper 90s farther to the north with ukiah and clear lake reaching up to 97 degrees. but for san francisco we're staying in the 60s today. our inland temperatures will actually cool down a couple more degrees as we head to the middle of the week. it's going to be a hot weekend as we reach up to 95 by this sunday, laura. all right, thank you very much. we'll be back with another local news update in half an hour.

some of that tropical moisture is being tapped into the gulf coast. you'll see some heavy rain in new orleans today. and then heavy rain, thunderstorms along a cold front stretching from the central plains over towards the midwest. that front behind it has some drier cooler air that will hit the northeast tomorrow but for now record highs possible across the northeast corridor for boston all the way down to boston including new york city. we've got thunderstorms over central florida. it's hot in the pacific northwest. although you don't have the high heat index, high humidity values and there will be some thunderstorms over the desert southwest later on today meanwhile, it's sunny over the northern plains. looks like hurricane douglas is moving away from the hawaiian islands. did not make landfall. that otherwise just a lot of heat.

next to him for 15 years on "live with regis and kathie lee. we'll talk to her in a moment, but first what made him such a national treasure. >> any day that has regis philbin in it is a good day. >> reporter: america lost a television legend this weekend and we at "today," we lost a friend >> three people went -- >> reporter: regis started at the bottom just a kid from the bronx working hard behind the scenes on "the tonight show. he had a few stints on air in local tv >> reg and became a regular on "the joey bishop show." but it wasn't until a little and kathie lee" that regis became a star and the man people wanted to wake up with they shared the screen for 15 years. as kathie describes it, they laughed and bickered >> we're role models for

dysfunctional people >> reporter: everyone watching at home laughed along with them. even after his work wife kathie lee left the show, their friendship continues >> i was with regis and joy last night. regis had me in stitches >> reporter: on "today," she referenced her old pal as often as her own kids. >> what do you miss most about seeing kathie lee every day? >> every day i don't know if i could take it every day. >> reporter: in 2014, the duo was together again with regis filling in on the fourth hour of "today" still finishing each other's sentences. >> she had two dogs. one was chardonnay and -- >> i had three >> one was regis >> reporter: kathie lee opened up about the passing of her long time friend and partner in this tribute saying i simply adored him and every day with him was a

they still are here in the summertime i was like can we have some lunch. they came over about two weeks ago. i saw reg get out of the car with joy and i sensed some -- much more fragility than i'd seen in him since the last time in january in los angeles so i had made them their favorite i hadn't, but this wonderful friend of mine did their favorite thing is just this big bowl of just deliciousness. and we sat right here on my screen porch and we laughed ourselves sick we always picked up right where we left off. i was with him 15 years. but it's been 20 years since i left the show. and we became dear friends through the years since then just always getting together every chance we could and just picking up as i said right where we left off. so we just had the best time and after they left, i just thought to myself, lord, is that the last time i'm going to see my friend. because he was failing i could tell yeah but i then called, of course -- i don't know something told me the other day when i was in tennessee, get on

a plane and go home. i didn't know why, but i learned to listen to that voice. i got on the plane, came home, and immediately heard the news about regis. called joy immediately and talked with her. yesterday drove over to her house with a big vat of, you know, fruity dimatti and every gift wine i had to give to her and the girls. they were in their living room going through pictures there were thousands of pictures we just reminisced for a little while. i don't want to intrude on their private family time, because i remember what that was like. it's been five years almost since frank passedies reaching out, but you also desperately i family so anyway, i was just grateful to have the time with them and comfort them a little bit, let them know that i believe with all my heart that i know where regis is and i know who he's with because i had many, many conversations with him over the years about faith and about where we go when this life is

>> you know, i think we both came from a place of we'd been performers all our lives so when we got together, it wasn't -- you and i had a different challenge because you had come from the world of journalism took us a little bit more. took time for you to start trusting your instincts as a performer. better actress than regis was an actor. but he was an entertainer and so was i. when we came together although we didn't have a friendship yet, we had a mutual respect for what we accomplished already in our careers. and we had the same sense of humor. and i wasn't afraid of me and he sure as heck wasn't afraid of me and we took off like a rocket. we loved being a local piece of slime show that's what we called ourselves. we were happy doing that little show and we always said we'll never go syndicated until somebody puts us on a satellite and says
