>> that is awesome. all right, let's get a look at our forecast as we head over to foster city. we'll start out with a few clouds. as we check out our temperature trend for the morning we are going to see low 60s here. it will be such a really nice day with some low 70s. for the south bay, we'll reach into the low 80s. some of us will still have that heat. we're in the low 90s in the low county. as we look at our forecast we'll talk more about what's ahead for the cooldown for the middle of the week. mike, you're watching the roads starting to heat up out there. yes, there's more traffic flow. i am concerned about this crash going on as far as the activity where i've circled there but i wanted to show you at the top of the screen eastbound 80 to the carquinez bridge no slowing despite the crash being on the bridge. no problem but a little slowing out of the altamont. that's the change we talked about. in san jose watching a crash north 101 at brokaw.
5:01 am
a poorly placed arrow on my part. that hopefully is placed on the shoulder. we'll get updates. back to you. all right. breaking news and new overnight, a triple shooting at a san jose motel. this happened a little before 1:00 this morning at the allura inn. our crew at the scene tells us officers cleared the area within the last 20, 40 minutes or so. police say none of the people shot suffered life threatening injury. the shooter or shooters remain at-large. this morning we focus on high school seniors finding themselves in a unique position. for those in the class of 2020 interested in higher education the pandemic may have them exploring other options, maybe even taking a gap year. "today in the bay's" jackie ward has more from a college counselor to help out with the pros and cons of making this decision and this is something
5:02 am
we've seen more kids do, even prepandemic. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. good morning to you. so lee, a consult at at bay area college consulting says that more than ever families are trying to figure out what to do. they are weighing the pros and cons more than ever right now, of course, the feelings extend beyond families here in the bay area. a survey by sallie mae and ipsos, people are unsure. lee has seen an uptick of people delaying the start of their traditional college experience. he says in the past the gap year has typically been reserved for those burnt out from rigorous high schoolwork loads. in the pandemic he's seen some wanting to explore their options
5:03 am
more. lee recommends at the very least take some type of college course. >> i have quite a number of clients admitted to the uc or cal state and so what's going on is that i'm advising them to do both actually to get ready to go to their four-year college online and begin taking classes at community college as of this summer as well. and i even encouraged taking one or two in the regular term while taking their classes at the uc as well. that has been my advice to a lot of families in terms of what's going on right now. >> reporter: maybe you were hoping to use a gap year to work and save money. people are in a hiring freeze and having to cut back on internships. a lot is being offered
5:04 am
virtually, too. colleges are typically good about deferring people if they request it, so it doesn't hurt to ask. in san francisco, jackie ward, "today in the bay." so many tough decisions. well, going from education to employment down the road those unemployment benefits still a big question on capitol hill this morning. what will happen next. three days after the federal bonus payment expired still no agreement and still no answer. nbc bay area's tracie potts joins us live from washington with what folks can expect from here. a lot of them are counting on that money, tracie. >> reporter: they're counting on the money but the money is not coming. an impasse in washington what to do. the white house and democrats are negotiating. the white house has offered a temporary extension -- a temporary fix, but democrats don't believe that will work.
5:05 am
still no deal. >> we still have a long way to go. >> reporter: no compromise between democrats, republicans and the white house on the unemployment payments that expired friday. >> talk to president trump. he's standing in the way of that. >> reporter: there's growing pressure on all sides to act. >> the white house recognizes we must do something meaningful, and that's why i think we can be cautiously optimistic we'll arrive at an agreement some time soon. >> reporter: the white house offered a one-week extension while negotiations continue. >> let's do a short-term deal. two issues on evictions and unemployment. >> reporter: democrats rejected that. >> they have a $200 proposal which does not meet the needs of america's working families. >> i'm not optimistic there will absolution in the very near term. >> reporter: meantime the coronavirus that caused the economic meltdown continues to spread. >> what we're seeing today is
5:06 am
different from march and april. it is extraordinarily widespread. >> reporter: the solution, more masks. >> we have to have like 85% or 90 individuals wearing a mask and avoiding crowds. >> reporter: but that's not happening. the virus and the money problems for millions of americans continue to grow. tracie potts, nbc news. more than 700 new coronavirus cases here in the bay area. nearly half of those in the south bay. those dashes in napa and solano counties, well, those are where those numbers have not been updated just of yet. right now all nine counties are on the governor's watch list. that means each county has seen a rise in cases and restrictions are in place. this is to try to flatten the curve. new this morning, two more nursing home residents have died from the coronavirus in sonoma county. of the 39 people who have died
5:07 am
they are residents of senior facilities. county health officials say last week was the deadliest week so far. some students plan to paint over offensive messages that were sprayed all over an armenian school. dozens of people gathered at the armenian school and community center yesterday to talk about that vandalism. san francisco police are still investigating including taking a look at security cameras to find any clues about the incident. community leaders hope this will be resolved soon so that the public can help to find the vandals. >> it wasn't one or two young kids making fun. no. this was five to eight adults doing this. >> this is the first time it has been targeted by vandals.
5:08 am
community leaders say this event may be connected to recent skirmish skirmishes. the world's best golfers are on their way to the bay area. this is a look for you right now over san francisco's harding park, site of the pga championship. now this is one of golf's four majors and the place would have been packed this week with fans but, of course, because of covid the fans are not allowed to attend. the tournament gets under way thursday. the course will host some events all week leading up to the first round. and certainly weather not too bad for them out there as they get ready to get some things going. >> might need some sunscreen. >> yes, i think we'll get more sunshine at least today in some of those areas. over to dublin where we've been getting a lot of sunshine.
5:09 am
low 60s at 7:00 and then we go into the low 80s as we go into late morning. here are our highs. some cool coastal temperatures but hot valleys as our weather pattern continues. i think we'll see changes as we head through the week. mike, any new issues popping up for the commute? overall we're doing okay. our sensors are green for the most part as we take a look at the map we're seeing that as it plays out. we're start to go see traffic build a little bit out of the altamont. you see the slowing. slowing heading to 680 and sunol. in the south bay we have a crash in the center divide and northbound 101 just past 880 just shy of brokaw. no problem right now.
5:10 am
back to you. >> thanks, mike. could it be a sign of the times? coming up for you at 5:15 what one airline is promising you if you catch a deadly covid-19 infection while onboard. washington looking into a crackdown on chinese software and not just tiktok. we'll take a look in business and tech. and all this week we're making sure we are keeping you up in the classroom ahead of the beginning of the school year. what can you expect on campus when we finally return. once it's safe for schools in person, pick up and drop-off time, maximize distance between students in the classroom and outside the classroom and you can expect your kids to have lunch outside or in the classrooms not hanging out in the cafeteria. you're watching "today in the bay." hi. we're e glad you c came i.

5:14 am
head across towards san rafael so that was a little note, a different view than we often see. well, good morning and a very happy monday to you. we could learn as early as today or tomorrow what the trump administration is planning to do about chinese software. >> here is what i hope the american people will come to recognize, these companies doing business in the united states whether it's tiktok or wechat and countless more are feeding data. the facial recognition patterns, it could be information about their residence, phone numbers, friends, who they're connected to. those are the issues president trump has made clear we're going to take care of, true national security issues. >> mike pompeo talking on fox business on sunday. now as for tiktok, microsoft has told the white house it might be
5:15 am
willing to buy tiktok and then go through the software code line by line looking for any security threats and remove them so americans can still use tiktok. in what may be, frankly, a response to all of this, a chinese court says a chinese company that owns a patent on virtual assistance like apple's siri should be allowed to go forward with a $1.5 billion lawsuit against apple. now that could block sales of iphones in china unless it's resolved one way or the other. we'll hear from the east bay's clorox. interesting if stay at home and all the demand for cleaning products means a big boost for the company. you may be buying a lot of cleaning products but probably not a lot of suits and other nice clothes. men's warehouse has filed for bankruptcy protection to start selling suits and ties. we're already facing pretty big challenges before coronavirus came along with everyone staying
5:16 am
at home. the same is true of lord & taylor, an east coast and midwest department store. all of this in the united states, in fact, has filed for bankruptcy. a couple of young tech guys bought the store chain with the intention of turning it around but obviously, kris and marcus, coronavirus had something else in mind. it's a real shame and i hope they can eke something out of it. they had a great idea of looking at a department store and saying what does it look like in 2020 and bringing modern tech into it and coronavirus just got in the way. >> or it's creating some other kind of impetus for a different kind of model. now maybe we don't think we have to go back. >> it will be the online shopping. yeah. the online shopping we're already doing. >> sorry, men's warehouse. i like you guys without your ties. >> thanks, kris.
5:17 am
all right. so trending this morning a bizarre new twist that you might even call an incentive for travel during coronavirus times. so flyers on emirates airline, emirates is vowing to cover medical, quarantine, even funeral costs for any passengers diagnosed with covid-19 while traveling on its plane. not only that it will pay about $175,000 for medical expenses and quarantine costs and should the worst happen $1,700 for funeral or burial costs. the giants, they are off to a pretty strong start this season which is surprising a lot of so-called experts. and maybe even some fans out there. the giants are looking to sweep the rangers at oracle park. they trailed 5-1. the game was tied with a two-run homer. texas wasted no time retaking that lead, eventually beating
5:18 am
the giants, 9-5. the giants are in colorado tonight. and, you know what, despite the rain -- >> despite the wind and the rain -- >> tell me more, kris. >> something good did happen. something good happened from hurricane isaias as it was headed towards florida. >> some sea turtles there are hatching. they dipped their toes into the water for the first time. always a cute thing to see. this is all for you there on june perfect beach. this is the state's east coast. you can actually see them coming through the sand and making their march to the ocean. that's pretty cool there. >> i see the video a couple seconds after you see it. you're like, ah, and i'm, ah. they are cute. >> actually seeing the mother bury the eggs, i saw that last year in mexico right outside of
5:19 am
my room, it is so cool to see them just covering it up. >> busy. >> most people ask for a view of the ocean or the city. you got an egg view room. >> that's when nature happens. >> a nature view. nature doing its thing with our forecast today, kari. how is it feeling for us? it's going to be a nice day. we're still in our typical summertime pattern. we have fog near the coast and sunshine and hot weather inland, but there will be less fog near the coast today so get ready for more sunshine in san francisco today as well as many of our coastal areas. inland it's going to be hot especially in the south county as we reach up to 92 degrees in morgan hill. not too bad in milpitas. we're looking at a wide range in temperatures so we have some upper 70s in oakland today. when you make your way to antioch we're talking more about
5:20 am
94 degrees. for the coastline, expect sunshine in half moon bay. you head over to palo alto and we're talking warmer weather there, some low 80s. as we look at san francisco mostly expect some upper 60s for some of the city. as we head over to the north bay we're heading into the low 90s so hotter there than it has been. as we look at our hour by hour forecast once again the fog kind of retreats back away from the coastline but we're still looking at some of the coast seeing some fog especially farther to the north. and then as we go into this evening we'll start to see it rolling back in but there will be some changes in our pattern as high pressure stays well to the west of us. as we go through the week it could allow for more of the low clouds, even some mist and drizzle as we head to tuesday night and wednesday and that will help cool down our temperatures as well. you can see that at the bottom
5:21 am
of the screen. as we look at our seven-day forecast, we're up to 90 degrees for today and then some low 80s tomorrow. check out wednesday. we haven't seen weather like this in a while but a significant change before warmer weather in time for the weekend. we'll be talking more about wednesday coming up. mike, you're talking about getting out the door. looking out to the roadway as smooth drive. i do have my eyes on a crash just shy of brokaw in the center divide. about 8:40 is when we typically see slowing there. the altamont pass, let's focus slowing there. north 680 i think that is an
5:22 am
anomaly. we'll track that. down to the summit, moving smoothly. you see the volume build but no backup at the bay bridge to the north. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up here nbc babay ar responds.. > reporter:r: tutorors are sg byby to h help y your kidss for. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. where you can find free tutoring help next. you can find us on social media. look at the tomatoes, all the birds got mine but it's nice when your friends share their garden bounty. i am enjoying those. let me know how your garden is looking on facebook, twitter or instagram. you can also find out what i cooked with all those beauties.

5:27 am
tutoring. many employers quietly offer it as a perk, also many public libraries offer free access through a partnership with a tutoring company. one of those is tutor.com. it has agreements with libraries nationwide. tutor.com's sandy white told us kids in element i, middle and high school can get almost half an hour of daily tutoring free of charge. >> the average session length for k-12 is somewhere around 25 minutes. that's the time they spend with a tutor. for college level usually about 35 minutes, so the problems are more complex. it takes a little longer. >> reporter: we had lots of questions, what subjects, who does the tutoring, and can you trust their teaching? our conversation goes in-depth tonight at 6:00. we hope you'll join us then. for more keeping up in the classroom. i'll see you tonight at 6:00. >> thanks, chris. coming up next for you here, top stories we're following on "today in the bay" including

5:32 am
know is for ominous reasons. we're heading into the low 90s. some low to mid-60s along the coastline today. we'll talk about a big dip in temperatures for the whole bay area as we head to the middle of the week coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking as drivers get ready to head out the door? i do have an issue for oakland, for drivers along the nimitz. a live look from the coliseum camera we have northbound those taillights you see them jamming up heading up to high street at the top of your screen. our map is what shows a slower drive just to the next exit there. 580 westbound. they may be slowing things down. the rest of the bay does show a smooth drive. watch north 880 up past the coliseum, there's a crash north of there. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news for you this

morning and new overnight a triple shooting at a san jose motel. this happened a little before 1:00 a.m. at the allure inn on oakland road. the crew there at the scene telling us that they cleared the area about 3:30 this morning. police say none of the three people shot suffered life-threatening injuries and the shooter or shooters still on the loose. back to our series keeping up in the classroom, we're trying to help you and your family be ready for the school year, just days ahead for a lot of folks and families. today in san jose the city will make an announcement about what it's doing to help make sure that all families can be connected and on line for the school year. bob redell is live in san jose. this so-called digital divide, we've heard that phrase a lot this weekend. it certainly has grown during the pandemic. >> reporter: unfortunately, it has. you're correct, kris. and the need for internet access
5:34 am
is growing because so many students will be doing distance learning when school returns in the fall. later this afternoon mayor liccardo of san jose along with at&t will announce that 11,000 high-end hot spots are coming to the city for people for free. some of which will be lent to residents at no cost to them at all. this expansion is part of the so-called covid-19 digital inclusion expenditure plan, an effort to bridge the digital divide for people who can't afford internet service but need access to online city services and for k-12 students studying from home during the pandemic. the city has five priorities to bridge this digital divide. you can see them on your tv screen. they want to get community wi-fi, boundaries, not as much internet access for students compared to other districts, get more computers in the hands of
5:35 am
students. they want to expand outdoor wi-fi. and increase the number for students. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. we will be distance learning for a while because, of course, the pandemic is still ongoing. state health leaders, though, say the number of positive cases in california is starting to grow at a slower rate. right now there are more than 500,000 people testing positive in the state. more than 9,000 people have died. health leaders say in the last week the average number of cases dropped nearly 22%. hospitalizations went down, too. in the last two weeks the death toll, though, did continue to climb. it went up by 21%. san quentin is reporting its 21st covid-19 related death. the latest inmate to die of the virus was being treated at an outside hospital like many other recent deadly cases. the number of active cases of inmates in the population has
5:36 am
dropped significantly in recent weeks. however, currently 147 active cases in the prison. families in santa rosa are going to have more time to decide how they want to school in the school year ahead. the original deadline to make a choice was today but now the city's school district is giving parents until friday to make that choice. that includes a semester long distance learning or hybrid model with part-time learning online. part-time in classroom session. classrooms, however, will only reopen if the county neemeets t state's guidelines. a wild firing burning in colusa county north of lake berryessa. the fire has torched more than 500 acres and is about 20% contained this morning. bay area firefighters are out there helping that fight.

5:39 am
recently we started to see an eye develop near the center of the storm before it moves further to the north near wilmington, north carolina. and very close to the coast bringing in heavy rain. all the way up to new york and affecting parts of new england so that's a concern as we go into the next few days as it races northward. we'll keep an eye on this and see what's going to happen with this storm. we'll look at our forecast in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for our morning commute? kari, overall it's looking great. the shot from our oakland camera not so great. across from the arena or the coliseum northbound 880 backing up to 66 heading north. the map will show you the same

still no deal on capitol hill so no extra money for people who are unemployment this friday. >> scott mcgrew, president trump wants to take action on his own. yeah, except he really can't. good morning to you both. congress controls the purse strings. the president can't really hand out money. one thing theoretically he could do volumes payroll taxes. he could order the irs to suspend payroll taxes and that would give extra money in everybody's take-home pay in their paychecks. if you're not employed, you don't have a paycheck and it wouldn't help the unemployed. republicans unveiled their plan last week. democrats had a plan in place signed and stamped since may. the republicans have now offered a temporary solution to bring some of that money to the unemployed. democrats say no quick fixes. >> they've made clear there's clearly a desire on their part to do an entire package.
5:47 am
we've made clear that we are willing to deal with the short-term issues and pass something quickly and come back to larger issues so we're at an impasse on that. >> even president trump has not liked the republicans' plan, as it stands, calling it irrelevant. we'll continue to watch as negotiations continue. the white house chief of staff mark meadows has been walking back president trump's idea of delaying the presidential election. meadows pointing out it does have three question marks next to it so he didn't mean it. meanwhile, one of the top democrats tells cnn he is worried president trump will never leave. >> i don't think he plans to leave the white house. he doesn't plan to have -- elections. i believe he plans to install himself in some kind of emergency way.
5:48 am

a company in mexico has a way for families to show off their newborn without exposing them to the coronavirus. this is an interesting concept. maybe some of our hotels/motels or bed and breakfasts might want to consider, offing a glass mobile cabin. it arrives, is deep cleaned before the parents and baby make an entrance. relatives and friends then drive past or they can snap on their masks for a closer look. the rentals cost $40 an hour. it kind of reminds me what they do with the pets at the macy's window? san francisco at christmastime. >> it actually reminds me of my school mascot, a bengal tiger. they used to have it in an air conditioning unit like that. >> what? a real one? >> tom got topnotch treatment. >> we had bevo. yeah, our longhorn steer got to

do bhawhatever he wanted. it is time to get a look at the forecast for us right now, kari. in some places you probably don't need the air conditioning unit. you can sit outside and enjoy. yeah, we've had some natural air conditioning near the coast. now we're starting out with the clear sky as we head inland taking a look at our view from mt. diablo this morning. we've seen the smoke giving us a colorful sun rise and a few colorful sunsets because of the wildfires burning nearby. the smoke is higher in the atmosphere and is not affecting the air quality as we look at our temperatures for today we are going to see the fog peeling away from the coastline, so even near the coast some sunshine today and those inland areas will start to heat up today as we reach into the low to mid-80s already by noon and we're going to see some of those spots reaching the low 90s in antioch at 3:00 we're at 92.

oakland will be at 72 degrees and then in half moon bay we're at 66 degrees. santa rosa will heat up as we reach into the low 90s for the middle of the day. a walk this evening comes back to the 70s for most of our microclimate. the fog, though, will deepen and create a thicker layer of fog as well as some mist and drizzle heading into the middle of the week. as we head to the weekend it will heat up once again as high pressure surges in and it's going to create warming and gusty winds. we're looking at this big cooldown. i can't even remember how long it's been since we've had highs in the 70s inland. end of the week we're going back to something we're more used to, temperatures in the 80s and 90s. mike, how is it looking now as drivers get ready to head out? speed sensors are looking better in oakland. take a look at northbound 880 past the coliseum, things are

really jammed up. we had a crash between a semi and a smaller vehicle and the semi did not stop to give the information. chp were in the area looking for activity. around that stretch and international boulevard, just zoomed in to show you that. it does look like the speed sensors are improving. around the rest of the bay everything is going as expected. slowing for san jose circled here and the bay bridge toll plaza, that backup formed early, about 20 minutes earlier. i'll track that as well. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now the san jose earthquakes are back from the bubble in orlando after what many fans will call a successful mission. so that video posted by the team shows the fans welcoming the team home. the quakes were not supposed to make it out of the first round but they reached the quarterfinals. they did lose to minnesota on saturday. all right. doing a good job.
