time off. i hope you liked that fog yesterday if he was out on his bike. kari, are we going to see more today? >> we will see it in the morning but not so much as we go into the afternoon. live look outside in san jose and we're looking at willow fwlglen and our temperatures notice the icons that show some clouds for the start of the day and as we head towards 11:00 and 12:00, we are starting to see more sunshine. we are still going to have comfortable weather but not as foggy and cloudy yesterday as we check out our temperatures reaching into the upper 70s in the south bay and low to mid 80s for some of our inland valleys. we'll get a closer look at this in the forecast coming up. mike, how's it looking for early morning drivers? >> a few crashes just start to populate our map right now and they don't sound like anything major and i did get my attention grabbed by roadside fire and over near port chicago highway.

actually closer to the eastbound side and that's where you see a little bit of slowing there but doesn't sound like it is a major concern for the roadway although the hillside did catch fire. they're getting over towards the bay bridge toll plaza and no problem and that's easily under control. right back to you, kris. >> thank you, mike. oakland police are investigating a deadly late night shooting. opd said it started as a chase involving a stolen vehicle spotted in san leandro about 11:00 last night. police say the suspect crashed his car near the 105th avenue intersection. the driver then exited the car holding an assault rifle. no officers were injured and the officer who fired those shots now on leave which is norcmal fr that investigative process. vallejo facing a lawsuit in another deadly officer-involved shooting. may sound familiar to you. today prominent oakland attorney plans to file a civil lawsuit

over the killing of sean monterrosa. a vallejo officer fired five bullets through the windshield of an unmarked truck killing monterrosa. he was not armed. police command should have known that officer had a history of firing his gun on the job. he thought a hammer in monterrosa's waistband was a gun. in the meantime the city of vallejo is releasing new information about a shooting that happened there last year. new body cam footage that shows moments before death of willie mccoy. he had fallen asleep in the drive through of a taco bell. according to new reports, 55 bullets were fired by vallejo officers. 38 of them struck mccoy. last night the police chief called for at least one officer to be fired.

an investigation showed the officer opened fire after five of his colleagues were already shooting. officers claim mccoy had a gun in his lap. a rising crime in the east bay and now that has police urging the community to help them find those criminals. oakland police say last month the department investigated 11 homicides. there were seven homicides during the same time last year. opd is now asking the community to help tip them off to people who were responsible for violent crime. officers say if you see something, say something. all this week we're helping you keep up in the classroom amid the coronavirus pandemic. new this morning as coronavirus testing positive. let's bring you "today in the bay" bob redell. bob, a lot of children are making full recoveries but some are suffering from the rare syndrome that can be life threatening. >> correct, kris. doctors have discovered that

"today in the bay." san francisco's schools are reportedly asking for donations to help bridge the digital divide which is more than ever now. the examiner is reporting the district is asking for $25 million in private donations to cover computer and wi-fi costs for the children of struggling family learning remotely. city leaders are hoping people in tech can pitch in to help. the district needs some 25,000 devices and wi-fi access for some 14,000 students. coming up on "today in the bay" your bottom line at the checkout line at the grocery store is going to get a little bigger. why your grocery bill is costing you more and which foods are seeing the biggest price hikes. plus, getting your fix for flicks. where you can see watch a drive-in movie and hint we're talking wall to wall screen.

crash near the toll plaza. we have a camera there. live look shows you no problem. it may be just past this camera, but we'll double check the chp report and follow up on that and the rest of the bay, coming up. good morning, i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. wall street will try to add yesterday's strong gains and the dow jumping 400 points and the nasdaq clinching a record close and the s&p 500 is now less than 2% away from its all-time highs set back in february. the market is just brushing off weaker than expected job numbers and then rallied after reports that congressional leaders are making progress towards the next covid-19 relief package. the focus today the latest report on the number of people filing for unemployment. another 1.42 million workers are expected to have filed have first-time claims for jobless benefits, that would mark the 20th straight week the claims have been above $1 million. door dash launched an online

good morning to you. we are looking live at the san mateo bridge and you're not seeing much of the fog that we saw yesterday morning. maybe a little bit this morning, but kari says it will burn off

by the time you take the dog for the walk in the middle of the lunch hour. good morning. >> good morning. i took my dogs a little late last night and it was a little cold out there, kari. >> the wind and all the clouds that we had. it was pretty breezy yesterday and that is what is transporting all of that cool air across the bay area. as we start out this morning, we're still seeing some clouds but at least visibility is clear. as we take a live look outside in dublin this morning. already commuters heading out on 580 and looked pretty good here. as we look at the cloud cover, we're going to see that for the next few hours and temperatures starting out in the upper 50s and then going into the noon hour. take a look at this. that fog starts to clear away and we have a lot more sunshine for much of the bay area. and we're also going to keep those nice, comfortable

temperatures. so at noon in spots like livermore we're at 75 degrees and we're also at 75 in novato and san francisco in the mid 60s and then going into the middle of the afternoon, san mateo at 74 degrees and oakland in the lower 70s. we are still going to see some low to mid 80s through parts of the inland east bay for the middle of the day and then as we cool down this evening heading out for that walk later on tonight, it's going to be in the upper 60s and low 70s. overall a really nice day and we'll heat up going into the weekend as high pressure continues to build. we're going to see not much of an onshore wind flow. we're going to see that quickly changing our temperatures, also not as much fog near the so, looking at our seven-day valley forecast. this includes parts of the north bay valley and heading to the east bay and santa clara valley. on average temperatures in the low 80s today. and then by tomorrow, we're starting to warm up a few more degrees but then check out the

weekend. some of our warmest spots will reach into the mid 90s by sunday. we're also going to have a hot start for the beginning of next week. and for san francisco and a lot of our coastal areas, expect some mid 60s today. foggy to start, but then clearing out. we should see a little bit more sunshine in time for the weekend. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking right now for that morning commute? >> overall, as you can imagine, kari, easy. cooler. we like the temperatures. things are a little bit of an issue in the tri-valley. south bay no delays. moving over to the tri-valley 680 heading down reports of a crash rolled over vehicle sounds dramatic. so far chp is on scene and no word of any serious injuriespes. we'll follow that. same thing where the arrows are slowing out of the altamont and through livermore. no problem at the bay bridge on

this map. the yaarrow shows you the richmd to san rafael bridge. sounds like they found no problems and speed sensors are fine and we'll track it until it's clear. a new battle brewing over a public service announcement made by nfl players spotlighting the death of stephon clark. that ad came out as part of the inspire change campaign. clark died in 2018 when sacramento police officers mistook his phone for a gun. the week that california prosecutors asked the nfl to pull the psa saying the case is being misinterpreted. clark's family members are now calling for sacramento county's district attorney to be recalled in part arguing that no officers were ever charged in that case. sonoma county might be the next county to fine people who are not wearing face coverings or masks. today the sonoma county board of supervisors will vote on if they will put fines in place, which

could range from $100 for people to $10,000 for businesses. violators would first get a warning. marin, napa and san mateo counties already have mask fine ordinances on the books. sonoma county has seen its covid-19 cases go up. there are more than 3,200 in the county. well, there's a good chance that you probably noticed some changes at the supermarket. grocery prices seem to be sky rocketing these days during the pandemic. vegetables, meats and everything in between, as well. cheryl hurd is finding out why. >> reporter: tammy used to spend $25 a week at this grocery store in concord. now her weekly grocery tab has more than doubled. >> i don't leave the store without paying at least 60 to $70. >> reporter: since we started sheltering at home, people around the country are seeing prices that supermarket go up.

meat prices between march and june jumped more than 20%. poultry and eggs up more than 7%. fresh vegetables and cereal also rising more than 3%. >> supply and demand issue. demand has been disrupted throughout the market. >> reporter: that disruption comes in many ways. restaurants had to close abruptly, which means meat had to be repackaged to be sold to consumers. that repackaging comes with a cost, which is passed on to you. >> businesses doing what they can to mitigate the effect of the pandemic. >> reporter: the spiking prices means many families can't afford the food they need. more than 29 million americans said they didn't have enough to eat at some point in july. so, while the price hikes on when covid-19 is nt, no one brought under control. in concord, cheryl hurd, nbc bay

lunchtime all the time. still much more ahead on "today in the bay" this thursday morning including no deal. the bay area county doubling down on its decision to keep elementary school students at home at the beginning of the year. plus, not a fish tale here. what's luring some really big, big, big catches off the coast. and happening now the olympic rings monument installed in tokyo bay for the 2020 summer games has been temporarily removed. the rings will have to undergo maintenance because the games, as you know, are delayed until next year. the monument will return in december. the games would have been happening this week with the original closing ceremony set for sunday. we'll be here next year.

well, we continue our series this morning, keeping up in the classroom. most schools will start with distance learning this year in our state and many elementary schools will be applying for a waiver so they can hold that in-person learning. contra costa county is holding firm and saying no. contra costa christian school is gearing up in hopes of reopening. a new ventilation system is now in place and having students in the classroom is just too risky right now. >> we feel that we're ready and we're going to provide a safer environment than what our students are going to end up in. >> the county says it will not even begin considering waivers until covid cases are stabilized. well, we want to hear your questions and concerns about the upcoming school year whether you're a parent or a teacher, even a student. share your thoughts with us on

smile on their face and go on to the next customer. >> you can see the big surprise in store for this essential worker on "the kelly clarkson show" today at 3:00 right here on nbc bay area. new this morning, no fish story here. ask an avid fisherman and they may tell you something going on right now in the waters off the coast. schools of rare, giant blue fin tuna. 150 pounds or larger not only being seen but they're catching them. look at some of these photos is proof. still have to take a big boat to get there. one fishermen tells the chronicle being spotted as close as three miles from the peninsula coastline. the same thing has happened in the past but rarely usually much further out to sea. >> big snapper one time, but not 150-pound tuna. never. i love that. >> you did? i didn't know you were such the angler. >> sometimes you just get lucky. and then you tell big stories. >> how impressive.
