you're here. >> good to be here. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll get to mike and that morning commute in just a little bit, but let's talk about the forecast. meteorologist kari hall, how are we looking? >> we're looking foggy right now in san francisco but the good thing is that it won't be foggy all day long. like we saw yesterday. so, if you're about to head out the door for that commute and we're looking at clayton going from the east bay and we're going to see our temperatures in the mid 50s with clouds this morning and nice, cool start and breezy winds and we'll see sunshine later on this morning. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates coming up. mike, how is it looking for the drive right now? >> well, i'm tracking the headlights right now, kari. it's dark out there and also typically we have easy drive on the maps. you see green all around except for a couple spots. i circled the crash approaching 84 and i think it's a little further down because you see a little slowing as you approach where it says sunol there south

680 out of pleasanton. the commute cutting through livermore and heading towards that same area may cause a build near that interchange. where that crash is may be aict factor. light traffic in the tri-valley and lighter for most other parts of the bay. an incident near sfo and we'll track that. back to you, kris. president trump is taking on silicon valley this morning because for the first time facebook deleted a post from his page labeling it as misinformation. today in the bay tracie potts. this is a pretty bold move from facebook, tracie. >> it is. it is the first time that facebook has actually taken down a post from president trump directly. that post where the president said that children are barely affected by or almost not affected by coronavirus. that is not true. and facebook called it misinformation.

as a result, they are taking down that post. here's what the president said. >> children are almost and i would almost say definitely, but almost immune from this disease. >> not the case. and now not only has facebook acted, but twitter has, as well. overnight we learned that twitter took down a similar post not directly from the president's account but from the trump campaign. this goes to show just how important social media may be in the upcoming election. take a listen. one expert from the bay area explaining what social media companies, what these tech giants are doing to prevent misinformation from running rampant. >> so that gives an extra burden to social media in this election. 2020, four years later. to deal with on a much more

spread to a fourth facility. the latest patient death brings the county's total number of elderly patient death to 35. in the meantime, seven people have died outside senior care homes. at least 448 senior care residents have now tested positive. well, businesses in california may soon be on the hook for not letting employees know if their co-workers tested positive for coronavirus. a new bill at the state capital would require employers to report covid-19 in their workplaces within 24 hours. supporters say right now a loophole gives employers protection because cal osha only requires the reporting of serious injuries or death. if approved, they could face misdemeanor charges and fines up to $10,000. the biggest names in golf now in the bay area getting ready to take their shot at history. the pga championship gets under way in san francisco. it will have the stars, but, unfortunately, not the fans.

"today in the bay" cierra johnson is reporting. >> this is going to be huge and like several others on the pga circuit this is rescheduled from may because of the coronavirus. the time has finally come. we've seen cars coming in, i'm assuming they're security. we've seen san francisco bomb squad to do that preliminary sweep. so, in a matter of hours more than 150 players will begin playing here. big names like brooks and tiger woods and all done without fans out of historic harding park this week. crews have spent days prepping the public course for the competition and with safety in mind, the pga has been focused on keeping those players and their caddies isolated like many other professional sports, these

athletes have been essentially riving living in a bubble. masks are a requirement and requiring social distancing. you won't see journalists. hundreds of reporters and photographers from around the world would typically cover an event like this, but this time around the pga has limited press to just 50 writers and photographers. take a listen to what former stanford golfer tiger woods had to say about this coming event. >> still a major championship and the best players in the world. plenty of energy. >> this event kicks off in just a matter of hours. we're assuming local restaurant owners are keeping their fingers crossed that this will bring in crowds to their bars and restaurants just like it has for some of those giant games. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> fun to watch, thank you. 5:07 now and continuing our g up in the classroom series. we're focusing on a peninsula district that is trying to bring relief to parents who cannot

work from home. the san carlos school district is now offering pandemic day care, but it comes with a big price tag. "chronicle" reports that a new program will allow working parents to drop their kids off at district schools. children from kindergarten to third grade are allowed but they have to bring their own devices. the problem for a lot of families is that it costs more than $1,700 a month. a new desperate call for leaders from the largest transit agencies including b.a.r.t. and muni are asking lawmakers to make sure they are included in the next round of federal relief. the cares act in march granted $25 billion forrist issystems nationwide and some is keeping local agencies afloat but starting to dry out. this time they're asking for more. $32 billion, which they addressed yesterday saying that the economy will never recover without public transit. and, of course, public transit is just one of the

things that mike watches on the roadways, but we want to hear from kari about that forecast. little warmer for getting outside this evening. >> yeah. we're going to get some more sunshine, too. but we're starting out with clouds and cool temperatures this morning. looking at all of our microclimates and you can see the cloud cover overlaid on this map. as we start out, once again. upper 50s and then as we head towards lunchtime, we're starting to see that fog roll back but still remain among the coastline and some inland areas will start to warm up and at noon we're seeing temperatures in danville at 76 degrees. in the middle of the day, a temperature of 83 degrees in santa rosa and oakland at 72 degrees and cupertino at 79. if you're planning to head out for a walk this evening, all clear except for half moon bay where we see at 7:00 it's going to still be foggy there, but clear as we see our temperatures starting to cool off for much of the valley. as we talk about the weekend, it's going to heat up. i'll have a look at that in a

few minutes. mike, how's it looking right now for the morning drive? >> it's looking slower, kari, in one key spot. we'll show you the trivalley where i'm tracking this crash. southbound 680 getting down towards highway 84 and the sunol exit and a little lower than where the accident marker had been located. leaving livermore in towards sunol and shy of that transition and no major injuries reported. the rest of the bay looks all right and circled over here by sfo on the peninsula and a crash on the southbound side is on the shoulder and no injuries out of lane and getting towards the bay bridge where no backup and smoother drive out of contra costa county. incident near the toll plaza and not affecting those lanes. back to you. >>h,mike. 5:10 right now. new legal battle brewing for uber and why the companies are literally stealing money and benefits from their drivers. plus, all week long we are helping you, your kids keep up

morning as you step out the door and temperatures in the upper 50s. going into late morning, we're going to get some sunshine today and slightly warmer temperatures. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast, coming up. and a heads up if you take the lower deck of the bay bridge. tonight and also sunday night and monday night, there will be a closure for the off ramp at treasure island. what's going on is they're continuing the seismic retro fit for the earthquake safety on the bridge. we want to keep everything safe. you'll have to loop back from oakland and that adds another 20 minutes. scott will check out now, though, what is shaking in the world of business. a lot shaking. good morning, mike. good happy thursday to you, as well. it's kind of a double data. first-time jobless claims that is job losses and then tomorrow we are going to get the july jobs report, which is jobs gains. now, the losses are bigger than

we'd like and the gains, i think, a lot smaller than we'd like. those are the early indications. you remember we went through all these phases. we stayed home and we cams when the virus getting worse and us coming out too early. again, that data will come tomorrow morning. facebook has blocked a trump campaign video on its site. it contained a clip of president trump phoning in to fox news giving incorrect information on coronavirus and facebook didn't want that to spread. now, i got no problems showing it to you. the whole thing because we can give context around it in a way that facebook can't. so, what you're about to hear is not good medical advice. >> it doesn't have an impact on them. i've watched some doctors say they're totally immune. i hate to use the word totally because the news will say he used the word totally and he shouldn't have used that word.

arm dealers and they have bee radar in the war between wasps and bees. it's amazing. >> team bee all the way. those hornets are nasty. >> enjoy your day off. >> pinch poke you owe me a coke. new legal action ride share companies uber and lyft towards new gig economy law. the state's labor commissioner office filed suit yesterday accusing both companies in wage theft by continuing to misclassify employees as independent contractors. as of january 1st, the state no longer allows that. uber reportedly responded yesterday saying the suit had not yet been served but a majority of its drivers want to work aslyft are pushing a ballot measure to overturn that new law. even though a's fans can't see their fans or the team can't

see their fans in person these days, they still have plenty to cheer about. the good times actually continued last night as the a's notched another big win. this time catcher austin allen hitting his first career home run and give the a's a lead in the seventh inning. they won the game 6-4 to take their fifth straight. giants meantime got some of their groove back in colorado. brandon belt hitting a three-run shot to put the giants up early, 3-2. later, wilmer flores a base hit to provide a little insurance there. the giants beating the rockies 4-3. the win snapped a three-game losing streak. that was nice to see that. >> that is nice to see. still so weird to see with no fans, though, in the distance, right? i like the little cutouts but odd in the outfield. >> and the crowd sounds, too. >> i wondering if our cutouts

travel to the away games. >> trying to get frequent flier miles, kari. >> yes. now, want to get away. >> we've definitely had some baseball wrereather here arounde bay area especially in san francisco with all the fog. we are looking forward to a little bit more sunshine today. we're going to see that as we take a live look outside in san francisco. we're checking out soma and foster city if you're going out for a walk thisern morning, ea it is going to be cloudy. if you wait until later in the morning and head out, you'll get more of the sun rays to soak up. by about 10:00 to 11:00, we'll see that sun really starting to come out and temperatures holding steady in as we look at all of our microclimates, we go down to the south county and morgan hills reaching 81 degrees and we're up to 80 today in livermore and antioch will reach 88 degrees

and then for the north bay, we're looking at some nice, slightly warmer temperatures in napa today reaching 83 degrees. in oakland 70 and 65 today in san francisco. going into the we it's about to heat up. that hig intense. we won't see as much fog near the coast and there won't be as much of that onshore wind flow that helps transport that natural air conditioning. so, going into the weekend we're looking at some hotter weather that kind of arrived fairly quickly considering we were in the 70s yesterday. today we have some low 80s for many of our inland valleys as we go from the north bay over to the east bay and down to the south county. we'll see on average temperatures in the low 80s today and upper 80s tomorrow. for the weekend, it's going to start to really crank up. as we're looking at am mid 90s here especially on sunday. next week just gradually comes down a few degrees and for san francisco and a lot of our coastal areas, stays in the 60s with some upper 60s for the

weekend. mike, any issues popping up there for the morning commute? >> a couple persistent ones. not a major impact. we'll show you the richmond san rafael bridge, for example.a mik lanes at the toll plaza no problems or flashing lights in the area. a weird pattern of a burst of traffic once in a while and something going on just before we get here. the map doesn't show anything on the speed sensors either just a note if you're heading across towards the san rafael side. that is your commute direction and little slowing until crews completely clear. no injuries there and no injories reported for south 680 and slowing around the sunol exit. chp hasn't given us an update. three cruisers for about half an hour. the rest of the bay is clear. back to you. >> sounds good, thank you, mike. your kids probably know who he is. youtube star's house just raided by the fbi. what agents are saying about

developing right now in beirut smoke is still rising two days after that massive, deadly explosion. they're now 135 confirmed deaths there and the desperate search continues for survivors who might be trapped in the rubble. this morning lebanese leaders say it did not have to happen. they say authorities were warned about the presence of volatile chemicals at that port for years and that no action was ever taken. a chaotic scene in southern california after a fight breaks out by nearly 100 people. it all happened yesterday afternoon at the cambria hotel in orange county. the fight started at the pool and floated to the lobby. officers said people had makeshift weapons and were attacking each other. witnesses say the fight started after someone accidentally pushed a child into a pool. two people are hurt and expected

to be okay. police also arrested two people during the fight. while the fbi so far is saying very little about a raid at a southern california mansion owned by internet star jake paul. this is new video of agents conducting that raid yesterday at paul's home in calabasas. he was not there at the time. he is not in custody. agents raided two homes of his, including one in vegas. the fbi said it's tied to an incident in may when he shot video of himself in arizona at a mall where there was looting going on. also been in hot water before for a large party at his calabasas home last month where no one was socially distancing. now to something good and inspiring story of a southern california woman beating the odds. eleanor is celebrating two major milestones. her 100th birthday and also beating covid-19. she was born in 1910. she moved to san diego during world war ii. in apriled positive

commute is lighter as we see now. now looking over towards the trivalley where traffic is flowing smoothly. the crash still on the grid there approaching 84 on south 680 and the slowing is gone and the crash and debris not updated by chp. we look at the slowing and from livermore to sunol and altamont pass is at speed. back to you, kris. oakland police are investigating a deadly late night shooting. opd said it started as a chase involving a stolen vehicle that was spotted in san leandro about 11:00 last night. police say the suspect crashed his car near 105th avenue and the driver exited the car holding an assault rifle. no officers were injured. the officer who fired is now on leave, which is normal for the investigation. the city of vallejo and one of its police officers facing a lawsuit this morning after a high profile police shooting.

it all happened during the chaotic protest and the looting sparked by the death of george floyd two months ago. "today in the bay" sharon katsuda joins us live. i understand two cases are developing here. >> that's right. i was here after the man was shot by the police officer back here in june and that's when there was so much emotion going on over what was happening. prominent oakland attorney john burris plans to file a federal civil rights suit over the killing of sean monterrosa. fired five bullets from an assault rifle through the windshield of an unmarked truck in june killing monterrosa. police command staff should have known that officer jarrett tonn had a history of firing his gun on the job. police responding to a report of vandalism and tonn said he thought a hammer in monterrosa's

waistband was a gun. the city of vallejo released new information of the shooting of a black man last year. new body camera footage death of willie mccoy. he had fallen asleep in the drive through of a taco bell. according to new reports, 55 bullets were fired by vallejo officers and 38 of them struck mccoy. mccoy was 20 years old. they claimed he had a gun in his lap. the police chief says he's calling for the firing of one of the officers and that officer allegedly opened fire after other officers were already shooting. reporting live in vallejo, i'm sharon katsuda. a rising crime in the east bay has police urging the community to come and help and step in. oakland police say last month the department investigated 11 homicid homicides. there were seven homicides over the same period last year. opd is now asking the community

for tips to track down those responsible for violent crime. officers say if you see something, say something. sonoma county might be the next county to find people who are not wearing face coverings or masks when they're out in public. today the sonoma county board of supervisors will vote on whether to put fines in place that could range from $100 for people to $10,000 for businesses. violators would get a warning first. marin, napa, san mateo counties already have mask fine ordinances on their books. sonoma county has seen its covid-19 cases go up. there are now more than 3,200inn the county but some of the state data might not be as accurate as possible. so, all this week we're helping you keep up in the classroom amid the pandemic. new this morning, the coronavirus cases continue to climb across the country. more children are also testing positive. let's bring in "today in the

bay" bob redell and, bob, most children make full recoveries but some are suffering from a rare syndrome that could be life threatening. >> correct, kris. coronavirus doctors are learning and so are scientists and a condition called multi-system inflammatory syndrome or misc. it causes severe inflammation in vital organs. doctors from around the world have now joined a consortium to study the impact they're having on children, particularly when it comes to their brain function and to see if it causes complications that could be life long lasting. >> our main concern is that a child will not continue to develop or could regress in development or be left with functional health, disabilities, that are life long. >> how scary did it get for you, tacia? >> it got fall out on your knees

"the examiner" is reporting the district is asking for $25 million in private donations. it's to cover computer and wi-fi costs for children of struggling families learning remotely. city leaders are hoping people in the city's tech industry can pitch in to help. the district needs some 25,000 devices and wi-fi access for some 14,000 students. now to something good on this thursday morning. and it might make you a little hungry. show al roker is kic

loop back here and head back west if you want to get on to treasure island. we have a follow up now and a new battle that is brewing in sacramento over recent public service announcement made by nfl players spotlighting the death of this young man stephon clark. the ad came out as part of inspire change campaign. clark died in 2018 when sacramento police officers fired on him mistaking a phone in his hand for a gun. this week, california's prosecutors asked the nfl to pull that psa saying that the case is being misinterpreted. clark's family members are now calling for sacramento county district attorney to be recalled in part they say because no officers were ever charged in that case. well, breaking this morning, what looks like some good news in the jobs front. first-time weekly jobless claims hit the lowest levels since the pan demidemic began. well below walmart expectations.

16 million additional americans filed for. new this morning a call to action to help unemployed californians. the department said it had a backlog of more than 1 million unemployment claims. maybe you were one of them. by next month, 80% of the claims will still be open. the edd received money to hire more than 5,000 people to help with that backlog but only 100 people have been trained to handle the claims. they are now demanding weekly updates and they're asking governor newsom to hold the edd accountable. on the federal level, negotiations aren't going well as congress debates new coronavirus stimulus bill. scott mcgrew, the president said he may take action on his own. >> yes, good morning. it is a little legally fuzzy

what the president can do because he does not control funding, congress does. but the president is saying, if congress and democrats in particular don't come to a deal, he will try to take action on his own. >> in the meantime, my administration is exploring executive actions to provide protections against eviction, eviction is a big problem. very unfair to a lot of problem. this virus came from a far away land, as well as additional relief to those who are unemployed as a result of the virus. >> we do think that the president could do something about evictions as housing and urban development is under his supervision. it is a good reminder, though, when it comes to federal laws and federal rules on eviction, this only affects housing that the federal government has some control over or money it contributes. it does not describe your

average apartment building. president trump says he's also considering executive action on cutting payroll taxes after congress refused to. it's not unusual for presidents to be frustrated with congress' inaction. not unusual to do things, the president to do things when congress says it won't. in fact, on the executive action, that's exactly what happened when president obama was president. he put daca through. daca was an executive action. other news we're getting information that the prosecutor in manhattan who wants trump's tax returns has gotten financial information from trump's bank deutsche bank. we don't know what information, but we do know trump's own attorney, former attorney, anyway, has testified before congress that the trump administration or organization rather would undervalue its own properties for tax purposes. that was followed up by a blockbuster "new york times" investigation that was showing much the same. you can follow me on twitter to see what is the latest.

afternoon. if you're about to lace up your sneakers and go out for a run or a walk this morning around oakland, pexpect it to still sty cloudy here and you may start out wearing a light jacket and later on today, we're looking at some sunshine. i think the sky should start to clear here at about 9:00. as we go through all of our microclimates, we're looking at high temperatures in santa rosa up to 86 degrees and then you head over towards oakland where it reaches 70 degrees but we will still have warm weather and more sunshine today as we look at the inland east bay reaching up to 88 degrees and livermore 80 degrees and some upper 70s for san jose and enjoying a little bit of time outside along the peninsula and san mateo. we're starting out with sunshine here and temperatures that will reach into the low 70s and start to cool off around dinnertime. so, as we go into the next several days, you can see that high pressure is the dominant feature here as it moves a little bit closer, we're not going to see much of the onshore wind flow, as well as that fog.
