skies and also some warming temperatures. as we check out our high temperatures for today we're still in the -- go to santa rosa, 88 degrees. 89 in concord with livermore reaching 87 degrees. in san jose as we look at some places you may be heading this weekend checking out the sierra. around lake tahoe it is going to be warm this weekend. we will see a few more clouds in the mix checking out monterey and some sunshine here. here in the bay area our interior valleys will reach mostly into the mid-80s today and then some 90s tomorrow. starting to come down a few

degrees and for san francisco and along the coastline looking at 60s and a mix of sunshine. we'll clear out for the afternoon. mike, you've been tracking a couple big issues for the east bay drive. >> we still have a couple issues. the big is the traffic alert for the dublin interchange west 580. it's been holding steady. the live camera we have a slower drive. folks are tapping their brakes. the map will show you the same thing. your right lanes are still blocked. they're asking for permission to use the shoulder. it looks like some folks may be -- there's a little slowing on pleasanton and north as well as 84 picking up the volume. and that's to be expected.

i'll see you tonight at 6:00. all right, the bay area is leading the state in responding to the 2020 census in part because we like that option of being able to respond online. so far the rate is 63%, 93 million american households. compare that to san jose which is 70% response rate. oakland at 65%. san francisco lagging a bit behind. the u.s. census population count will determine where federal money will be spent, $675 billion for housing, transportation, education and more as well as congressional seats and how many we get. so far bay area respondents are doing well but there's still work to do. >> there's still a lot of work to be done in san jose, san francisco and across the bay area. their time to respond is now. time is running out. next week we're going to start sending people door-to-door to

lives could be lost by christmas. let's get to cierra johnson. a lot of uncertainty going into the week. >> reporter: yes, exactly. when the state announced their latest numbers on thursday it was presented with the caveat that the cases may be higher than they're presented because there's been a glitch in the system used to gather that data and because of that data glitch the state is not adding any additional counties to the list and they're not taking any counties off of that watch list. now the watch list is made up of counties that did not meet the six metrics including case rates above 10 per 10,000, people over a 14 day period and hospital increase of 10% or more over three days. every county in the bay area is on that list and required to close gyms and malls.

they are not coming off the list despite the fact "the mercury news" reports san dmateo and santa clara is close to being off of it. >> we don't know if we can open one day, close the next day. we're just playing it by ear. >> reporter: right now no word on how long it will take the state to correct the system glitch. as many counties sit in the dark because they don't know the exact number of cases they have they're urging folks to fight the fight meaning with the warmer temperatures this weekend, keep to yourself, wear your mask and practice social distancing. >> can't stress it enough. thank you, cierra. because distance learning will

kick in, we'll continue our series "keeping up in the classroom" focusing on san francisco where teachers have reportedly reached a tentative distance learning deal for the coming school year. "the chronicle" is reporting the deal came together after a 16-hour marathon bargaining session wednesday. the union says it includes stipends for work from home costs and flexibility for teachers who have their own children learning from home. the deal will remain in effect through next june or until students return to in-class learning. continuing coverage of a story our investigative unit first uncovered. allegations at the santa clara county sheriff's office traded concealed weapons permits for campaign contributions. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live. a news conference for later today. what do we expect to hear, bob? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, kris. later this morning, a few hours from now, the district

attorney's office expected to announce the results of a grand jury probe. multiple sources tell us the investigation centers on whether or not sheriff laurie smith's office favored people who donated to her re-election campaign. our investigative unit analyzed five years worth of data and found contributors were about 14 times more likely to get a concealed weapons permit compared to those who did not contribute money to her campaign. the i-unit found 79% of donors were awarded permits while fewer than 6% of those nondonors were not. people like mark hinkle who asked sheriff's deputies what would it take to get a permit. >> every one of them said, well, if you make a substantial contribution to sheriff smith's re-election campaign you'll improve your chances. and, of course, i don't want to do that. >> reporter: sheriff smith has

declined to comment on this investigation. her defenders have said she has done nothing wrong. a news conference is scheduled to announce the results of an ongoing investigation. bob redell, "today in the bay." and through our special keeping up in the classroom series we look at ways to help make sure this very unique school year is maybe just a little more easy for families. today some good news, $7.1 million worth of outreach and technology. providing to help bridge the digital divide. right now the santa clara county office of investigation helped students who don't have the necessary tools at home. that money will be spent to buy laptops and provide wi-fi and hot spots. lack of technology is not a new problem in the bay area but is a
