fast-moving fire threatening thousands of homes in southern california. it is called the lake fire and burning just north of los angeles in santa clarita. brand-new video to show you, as well, into our newsroom shot by our sister station in southern california from their helicopter. kind of giving you that aerial view there. this fire has exploded in size from 400 acres to an estimated 10,000 acres in just a couple of hours. it all started yesterday afternoon and fueled by high winds and really dry conditions in the hillsides there. today temperatures are actually expected to be a little bit cooler so they're hoping that this will aid firefighters in their figre fight. officials set up shelters for people having to be evacuated from their homes in some of the where you can find games, news and highlights. parking lots but they're telling people that they have to stay in all in one place, right on your tv. their cars. the xfinity sports zone. we're continuing to follow what is going on as well as checking use your voice to search every stat, standing and score. in with our sister station in

empty independent workers and neither company wants to do that. they appealed the court ruling but say if they lose the appeal, they may stop operations in california until november when a proposition ending ab5 appears on the california ballot. president trump says he wants to end payroll taxes altogether but that is what pays for your social security. he doesn't want to end social security either and the funding for your social security checks will come out of the general fund. we'll talk more about social security as we talk politics coming up in a half an hour. now we just got the first-time jobless claims. the number of people telling their states they lost their job and they need unemployment assistance. it fell below a million people for the first time in 21 weeks. that is good news, unless, of course, you are one of the 963,000 people who lost their job last week. that's every day.

so, that's roughly the population of sunnyvale every single day. vmware in the south bay are going to add to that. they're laying off, figuring out how many people that is. vmware employs about 31,000 people. cisco says it needs to cut costs, as well. cisco one of the largest employers in san jose. in a conference call with reporters yesterday, cisco ceo said sales were down, but no specific talk about job cuts. and take a look at this, marcus and laura. this is rei's new headquarters in bellevue, washington, near seattle. the company has not moved in yet and now they're saying they would like to sell it because this idea of having your entire corporation in one giant building seems these days like maybe not a very good idea. even perhaps beyond the pandemic. we've already seen this with facebook, for instance. facebook told its employees not only should you come back until

get up and get those kids on the comput computer. whenever you have the breaks in home schooling few clouds and temperatures in the mid 60s and you can see how fast it heats up today and the early morning hours are best. you want to make sure you stay hydrated later today. as we look at the temperatures and all the microclimates we take it through lunchtime and 90 degrees already in danville and upper 60s along the coast and san francisco and during the middle of the day, the low 70s. but then you see 100 degrees in concord and san jose will be at 92 degrees. now, notice the clouds that will start to move in. this will be a surge in humidity coming into the bay area. so, tonight, our temperatures really don't cool off that much, in fact we're staying in the upper 60s and low 70s. we can see the wider view of the radar and satellite showing the rain surging into l.a. due to the remnants of a tropical system and all those lightning strikes off shore. we'll be watching out for a slight chance that there could be some dry lightning, but it

looks like much of the rain fizzles out before it moves into the bay area. but the clouds will remain and will start out tomorrow morning with a cloudy sky and higher humidity even as our temperatures will be surging up. so, look at our inland areas. we're reaching into the upper 90s today. but tomorrow we're talking about highs over 100 degrees. more widespread combined with that humidity, so, you really have to be careful in this kind of heat. the humidity starts to drop on saturday but we're still going to have hot temperatures. if you're thinking of going to san francisco or the coastal areas, it's also going to be warm there. we're looking at mostly some upper 70s in the city throughout the next several days. mike, what's happening right now for the morning commute? >> kari, honestly, still trying to figure this out. we'll show you the live picture for the san mateo bridge. west 92 slows obviously across the flat section heading over towards the flashing lights that you see over on the right side really jamming up. what happens is if the emergency

repair work of some sort because it's not on cal tranand not on the chp grid either and we saw that truck on the flat section. clear of the slowing and you do see it by the arrow across 92 and one easy way to avoid that backup because of the rest of the roadways in the area are clear. south of there, no problem. great recovery across the bay bridge. the metering lights are on slowly but the recovery just slows for 580 over towards the span. back to you. speaking of recovery, take a look at this video. it was after the massive explosion in beirut. it all happened at a hospital. there was a nurse taking care of premature babies. what she did for three of them, coming up to save their lives. made her a real hero.

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay waets and bay" and we have a story of hope amid all the destruction. remember the explosion in beirut. take a look at this. new video shows a neonatal nurse working in the maternity wing of the hospital during the explosion. it happens right there. through all the smoke and toppled medical equipment and broken glass, she managed to rescue three premature babies and carry them through the wreckage to safety. the nurse ended up walking more than three miles to find a safe

haven for them. the prime minister and his cabinet resigned last week after the blast that killed more than 170 people earlier this month. well, new insight this morning on how widespread covid-19 really is. our sister station in los angeles conducted an investigation by swabbing 75 surfaces that people touch every day. 11 of them including shopping carts, public bathroom doors tested positive for the virus. the cdc says the virus can live for three days on those types of surfaces. an epidemiologist says despite the findings, she does not recommend you wear gloves. >> just because wearing gloves really plays with our psyche of getting a false sense of security and can result in cross contamination. tt did not specify if the virus was alive at the time. the swab used in the study was made by san francisco based. coming up next on "today in

live camera. best i can tell re because i saw flashing lights and saw a sign truck on the right. right here the service lane closest to us follow it all the way down and you see a set of flashing lights making its way in the service lane over towards the high rise. maybe something else going on there. the map shows you slowing across the san mateo bridge for that short section and the dumbarton bridge a great alternate for you and there is a build over in the maze and we'll talk about bay bridge coming up. >> thanks so much, mike. breaking news that is happening in southern california where hundreds of homes are in the path of this fast moving fire. it's happening in santa clarita, which is just north of los angel angeles. these are live pictures from the blaze and just tearing up the hillside more than 10,000 acres, in fact, and it just started yesterday.

mekahlo medina filed this report. >> the fire about 10,000 acres and 0% containment and here where the fire destroyed a few homes. take a look behind me. continue to burn right now. this is the driveway of at least one of four homes we counted that have been destroyed by the fire. you can see power lines are down right now. our camera will turn around and show you what's left of this home. unfortunately, not a lot. we see the fireplace standing a couple walls and you can see the fire still burning inside the home here. we are told by fire crews this is the area where the fire tornadoes ripped through as firefighters tried to battle this thing just a few hours ago. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon and quickly burning up to 1,000 acres and now up to 10,000 acres. and then a few hours ago, this is where it burned the hottest and the closest to homes and residents. destroying at least the four homes that we counted so far now. the good news to report this

morning, if there is any, no one was injured because of this fire. that's certainly good news. one thing they're watching very closely as the day breaks the weather. how hot is it going to be. is that going to hamper firefighters as they continue the effort there and firefighting that does look like we're getting a little bit of rain. that could actually help out more for folks here in this area. once again, several homes, at least destroyed by this fire and 10,000 acres still 0% containment. i'm mekahlo medina. > back here at home for you this morning, you may have more dining, workout and personal care options in san jose. this as the city looks to expand the outdoor space available for businesses to serve clients outsi outside. buildings here. this is the parking lot for that area. it is one of the first places in san jose that is going to be open to businesses who want to expand their services outside. the city just offered that up to try to help them stay afloat during this pandemic. parking lots and other open spaces will be available to any business within a quarter mile from here and the other locations that are opening. that is a large number of restaurants and hair and nail salons, gyms, personal training studios along with retail businesses. now, there will be businesses that want to move their businesses outside. things like heat lamps and tables and what not but paying a city fee will not be one of those expenses. >> we're waiving all the fees for doing it and we're accelerating the process to help our businesses to be able to stay open and really to survive. >> so here are the areas now available in san jose under the city's new expanded al fresco plan.

all city-owned properties and downtown plazas and city parks larger than one acre. all the parks in the city except for two. surface parking lots like the one we're in this morning and even privately owned ones and street areas where many are serving customers outside. now, for some businesses it might not make total business sense. as one salon owner tells us, she can't take her business outside and offer her clients their favorite services like color or blowouts and some bay area cities are already starting to roll back some of their street closures because with more limited parking, the customers just weren't showing up. according to yelp, about 2,000 businesses are now listed as permanently closed. that is just san francisco and hayward. not the entire bay area. so we know that when we come out of the pandemic, things will look different. this is why the city of san jose is trying to give businesses an oppo lives. in san jose, kris sanchez,

"today in the bay." >> thank you very much, kris. new this morning, facebook launched a new online tool with the goal of getting millions of additional people registered to vote for the polls in november. "today in the bay" bob redell joins us live outside the company's headquarters in menlo park. bob, the company has been criticized for how it handled the last presidential election. >> correct, laura. facebook has been criticized to not stop russia from spreading misinformation on its website and even criticized now for not fact checking president trump's misleading post about the upcoming election in november. today the company has launched on facebook and instagram both platforms the so-called voter information center. this is a new tool designed to help americans register for the november presidential election. the goal is to sign up at least 4 million people. this new tool is in part to the

kids crowded in the halls. they had to shut that school down and hundreds of kids are now in quarantine. on wednesday, president trump said the federal government would distribute 125 million reusable masks to american schools and offered to send the cdc to whatever school requested it. his administration also offered guidance, really pretty straight forward among the guidance check for symptoms before coming to school. wash your hands, avoid groups, open windows, run fans and use masks. here's the secretary of educati education. >> we know that for students and their families, they can't be held captive to other people's fears or agendas. we have got to ensure that families and parents have options that are going to work for their child and for their children's education. >> president trump said several times yesterday that he wants to get rid of the payroll tax altogether. you remember he's suspending it

and i cannot stress this enough by just suspending it, you will still owe that tax come next year. but, by getting rid of it, well, that's what pays for social security. now, how would that work? president trump says social security would be paid for by the taxpayer out of the general fund. >> when we win the election, when i win the election, i'm going to completely and totally forgive all the deford payroll taxes without in any way, shape or form hurting social security. that money will come from the general fund. >> changing or even talking about changing social security used to be considered the third rail of american policy. just simply didn't do that. but then, again, president trump is an unusual politician and you heard him say, if i win, you don't owe them money. we'll take a look at that on twitter and find me on twitter and i'm @scottmcgrew.
