today. i'm laura garcia, vianey is in for michael. but we're bracing for this hot one today. yes, we are. and i love that sunset posted yesterday. because of the radar this morning. a surge of tropical moisture and the rain is just off the coast and our coast air areas might see light showers but once that clears out, we are left with a high heat ramping up today. we have excess i've heat warnings in effect as we look at temperatures today. it is just painful to say it. 109 degrees today in antioch. we'll talk about all of this heat in the forecast and also our records for today, some of those records may fall. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. vianey, how is it looking this morning for the commute? it is quiet so far. but there is one overnight crash that we're monitoring closely as

the traffic continues to recover. this is an overnight crash along westbound 85 near the expressway, all lanes are now open but at one point we did have a couple of lanes closed which means we have slowing through there as far as our speed sensor goes. but aside from that, everywhere else looks good. cal fire is on high alert as teams begin to build to the triple-digits that kari was just talking about. meanwhile here in the south bay, firefighters are reviewing response plans for dry lighting and the pandemic playing a role in the fire threat so far this season. special preparation are in order for firefighters to social distance on the job like down in l.a. county where many of the resources are in the bay area. they are now on the ground to assist with the massive lake fire. let's talk more about that right now, marcus. that is the latest on two fires still burning out of control in

southern california. it is called the lake fire near santa clarita. has scorched 11,000 acres and only 5 percent contained. three homes are destroyed and a hundred structures were evacuation orders this morning. residents are forced to flee during the pandemic but think about it where do they go. our affiliate in los angeles spoke with a homeowner choosing not to leave. >> it is ironic how fire could do that but it is scary when it gets flames like that and it is high and hot. >> firefighters are batting the ranch fire in l.a. county. it is still 0% contained. with the excessive heat, you may not feel like being in the kitchen. but dining outside may not fit too well as well for you. so, it is unfortunate time as san jose just expanded the outdoor space for restaurants and hair and nail salons and the

gyms. kris sanchez is joining us with the latest blow for businesses trying to stay afloat here. >> reporter: hi, there, marcus. how often do you ever see this, it is 74 degrees and it is 4:30 in the morning. but by this afternoon it is not going to be hot and down right dangerously hot to be outside. now for some businesses serving outside is the lifeline for staying afloat. staying out of the kitchen not turning on the stove or oven might give customers time to dine outbut they'll likely feel the impact. one salon owner said the last thing she wants to do is call an ambulance for anyone. >> i'm going to attempt to work for a few hours in the morning and see how it goes. i have to cancel all of the

now investigators say justin silver was killed after he slashed two people with a knife and took off in a patrol vehicle in south san francisco back in april. he is also being investigated in connection to a homicide in san francisco where dismembered body was found in an apartment. members of the santa clara county jail plan to participate in a hunger strike. so they're protesting the death of george floyd and racism, bringing attention to the injustice. here we're continuing the conversation about race. and marcus, so proud of you, you're leading the charge in a great way with the race in america special conversation. you aired another episode last night. >> each one, you say, wow, that was really good. and we had a guest last night, jenny nichols, the chief impact

recovery in 15 minutes. good morning, i'm contessa brewer at cnbc business knew. wall street is shaping up to open in the red. down about 100 points given the implied opening. this is really because of the markets that were struggling to hold on to gains yesterday. in fact, the dow closed in the red. the s&p 500 closed in the red. even though it had briefly touched a record. but the broader markets couldn't get over the record line in february because investors seemed like they're concerned about the stalemate over the new stimulus bill in washington. still, yesterday was the 100th trading day since the market hit the pandemic march 23rd and the s&p is up 50% marking the biggest 100 day trading rise since 1933. today we look for reports on retail and productivity.

apple and google have yanked fortnight for the app store. so new players, you're out of luck. you could not download fortnight and existing players can't get the updates for the game. that is propertied the maker to file a federal law enforcemelaw trying to bypass the way they get paid with a direct payment future. apple could take as much as 30% in subscriptions and in app payments and analysts believe games are the biggest contributors to spending on the app store. a judge in california rules that amazon could be held liable for defective products even though they're sold on an flooin market place. they were shielded from liable because it is a service provider and in fact amazon has been sued many times over damage or injuries caused by defective

here we go on this friday morning. looking nice and clear out there. but it is a lot warmer than we're used to. this is a live look in downtown san jose. where we are going to see some hot temperatures today. oh, boy. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that for usch and kari, we are excited about what we're going to do this weekend but i'm staying in the house. it is going to be hot out there. yeah, it will be hot this weekend. i think movies is the best bet for us. and we also need to try to conserve this energy, too.

so with the hot weather we have coming in, that is definitely going to be an issue. let me show you the rain we have coming down this morning as' look at the radar, from half moon bay to martins beach, we're seeing some of the light showers moving in. and most likely weaken over most of the cruz mountains and then for the rest of the bay area, just feeling the surge of heat. let's take it hour-by-hour. just like yesterday, the high clouds will move in and continuing into the afternoon and that will not sto temperat livermore. we're at 95 degrees at noon. and san jose is at 94 degrees. concord at 97. and san francisco will be in the low 80s. into the middle of the day, it just continues to heat up. we're in the upper 90s for the south bay and up to 105 degrees in morgan hill. the temperatures in the

afternoon will be over 105 degrees for many of the east bay as well as the north bay. we're going to, in some spots, set new records today. even if you're making plans to go out later in the evening or during the overnight hours, not much of a cooldown as we come back to the 70s. we compare this to the records and our numbers for today, well santa rosa is 100 and we're forecasted 102. concord will reach up to 107 and the record is 104. most likely all will have new records set for today as we deal with the high humidity and extreme heat and unfortunately it just continues at least into the middle of next week. vianey, how is the commute rolling this morning? well, it's moving along nicely. but i do want to sort of bring an if update about an overnight crash, this was a deadly crash along westbound 85 near the expressway. they had issued a sig-alert

around 4:12 but now all lanes are open but if you catch slowing that is the reason why. westbound 80 toward the bay bridge is only 7 minutes. we'll have another update in minutes. now to a follow up on a story you saw here on "today in the bay." this morning we're hearing from the officer who pulled a man stuck in his wheelchair to safety. that is as the train was coming. this is body cam footage from the officer. this morning she said that at first she didn't know if she would be swift enough to pull him to safety. >> i wrestled him on the ground and i heard noises from the train. i thought at first i thought maybe i didn't get him. after that, i kind of looked back and i saw he was still there. >> wow! so the 66-year-old man, he did suffer a leg injury. the ol interview on

the "today" show right after "today in the bay" at 7:00. >> remarkable there. well new this morning, stanford is under fire over some new policies of how it handles sexual harassment claims. the policies will take effect today. they include procedures on how students and administrators should file a complaint. what is missing? apparently attempted rape is no longer on the list of offenses. acts have to be completed and students are no longer required to get consent from partners. backers of the new rule say it gives both sides due process but critics say stanford is trying to sweep sexual assault under the rug. stanford has been under scrutiny following the 2015 brock turner case. he sexually assaulted a unconscious woman on campus and served six months in jail. people were upset about how short of time that was. 4:53 this morning.
