right to the breaking news this morning. situation across the bay area getting a lot worse for firefighters already stretched thin. this map shows you where the fires are now burning. in the bay area and santa cruz county. governor newsom declaring a state of emergency as some 30 fires are now burning across california. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson live in vacaville where the fires exploded and spread overnight. pretty active there. >> reporter: good morning. yeah. it is extremely active. since you came to us last you can tell that fire spread. i'll step out of the way to see that smoke has shifted and you can see that fire eating up that vegetation up over the hill. depending where you are when you woke up this morning you probably smelled smoke. i woke up 2:00 in the city and my apartment smelled like smoke and in the hallway of the building. 80 east you can see the smoke in
5:01 am
the air and from the freeway you can see the flames. we are at cherry glen and pleasant valley road and chp blocking that intersection only letting law enforcement, first responders in to try to prohibit that traffic to do their job. for hours folks have been working to evacuate, preparing to evacuate from this fire. earlier you heard from one of our own discussing how stressful it is. he said he could see the flames from his home and began taking photos of the belongings, photos of the home in case to document the damage. good advice in this vacaville area. may be best to prepare or get a plan together to leave. when we were here we were actually parked next to a car of a gentleman and his dog. they left their home seeking higher ground. take a listen to what some of these folks are going through as they prepare to leave this area.
5:02 am
>> been through fires before. i've never evacuated before but -- >> why this time? >> because it was -- it was coming hard and coming fast and winds were probably about 45 miles per hour. >> reporter: and i can tell you out here now it is extremely smoky and there is a lot of ash. several cars covered completely by ash but behind me that fire moving quite quickly. we'll provide updates for you. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> all right. thank you for the update. here's a look at the fires from the pg&e wild fire cameras. this is time lapse from mount vaca overnight. it nearly looks at one point that the camera damaged by the flames. you will see it come up here as that fire just rages over the mountain. this is that connect solano and napa counties there.
5:03 am
>> just how intense the fire is. one of the hundreds of people under evacuation orders is our own here. we spoke with photographer robbie beasom after highway patrol told him it was a good idea to evacuate and feels fortunate with the time to prepare but what he saw on the fire loons last night some were not so lucky. >> probably filmed like unfortunately like four or five homes going up in flames. >> wow. >> people just scrambling to get out, loading horses, wildlife running everywhere. it was just -- the firefighters are doing the best they can but it's just everywhere. >> you heard him there talking about the firefighters. kari hall is monitoring the conditions out there. kari, it is the intense heat from the fire and the temperatures to face in the area are really hot out there today. >> yeah. it has been so hot across the bay area.
5:04 am
and so, we have -- we are just watching that video of that camera overtaken by the flames in mount vaca. this is very close to where that camera is currently so itut bot vaca and this is a live view right now of a picture just captured. if you are in those areas where you need to leave or you're being told to leave or you can see the flames make sure you're ready to leave. grab that emergency kit that you should already have gathered, have the important papers, a change of clothes and maybe food, water and medication and of course all of the people in the house as well as your pets and enough of the pet food for next several days. the air quality is just horrible because of the smoke coming in, seeing ash falling across the bay area from san francisco down to the south bay. and so as we go through today make sure you're wearing your mask throughout the day,
5:05 am
whatever mask you have been wearing is better than nothing when the air quality is that bad. mike, how's it looking for the morning drive? >> kari, as far as the morning drive goes, it is great but portions because of the fires that you can't go. 128 up in the north bay behind me, marked red on the map. that section over toward atlas and then 121 parts. if you oar not in the area obviously get out. stay out of the area. if you have been evacuated stay away. over in vacaville, chp noting the fire very close to i-80 and concerned about to close parts of that highway or 505. laura, we have much more fire activity. back to you. >> there are so many fires, 30 in fact, right now akrosds tcro area. the santa cruz mountains, a fire

center is at pescadero high school. this is on top of the folks force out of the home overnight some of whom did not know that the fire was so close because they're in communities with limited cell service and very big trees. >> we are so deep in the redwoods you can't see the smoke that much. you can see up but not across. >> reporter: hopefully the folks ordered to evacuate around 10:00 lak night know that. that's the big basin fire protection district. the air is heavy with smoke here. we know that it's a difficult fire fight because of the high heat and because of the rocky ridges here and will continue this morning. we'll talk with cal fire just over there coming up at 6:00. hopefully they will have good news but there's no wind which is something that we really
5:08 am
dread to see in situations like this one. we'll bring you an update. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right. certainly check back with you. thank you so much. meantime a viewer sent us this video from austin creek where firefighters say two fires have burned more than 500 acres. these are fires believed to be part of the larger complex of fires in sonoma county. here's a map of that location to give you a better understanding. west of gurnesville. now despite the threat of rolling power outages, the bay area was spared but it's bringing attention to wind and solar power. they say it's not without the draw backs and in southern california it didn't help when the demand is at its peak. here's a uc berkeley professor. >> the fact is renewables are
5:09 am
great. wind and solar. they are super cheap these days. they are very green. but they are not controllable. entirely. >> on monday governor newsom signed an executive order to free up additional power capacity following the last week's rolling blackouts and calling for an investigation as to certain customers not given adequate warning. >> get weather alerts to the phone with the nbc bay area app. you can also get the latest on the fires and evacuations under way. it is free to download. now to decision 2020. it is official. democrats have nominated joe biden as their candidate for the president at the democratic national convention. and tonight we're going to hear from his running mate california u.s. senator kamala harris. former president obama and house speaker nancy pelosi are also set to speak. 5:12 am
highs over 100 degrees in the inland east bay and not seeing as many highs over 100 degrees for the north bay but it's still hot so that excessive heat warning continues for the inland areas. we'll talk about slightly cooler weather in the forecast coming up, laura. travelers beware. still ahead, what you need to know now if you're still considering an upcoming getaway to hawaii. it seems like we're living in the craziest of days, doesn't it? somehow the stock market continues to make new records. you are watching "today in the bay." experience the ultimate sports hub.

5:14. we take a look at the wind speeds this morning with numerous fires this morning, this is live video of the fire near vacaville. the lnu complex fire we see sparked by the lightning strikes a couple of days ago is causing this to really spread. we will have an update on this and more coming up in a few minutes. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. you know, if you had told me a year ago that i would be hunkered down in my home and every time i had to leave my home i had to wear a mask yet at the same time the stock markets would hit new records there is
5:16 am
no way i could have possibly believed you. not only will the s&p 500 open this morning at a new record, so, too, will the nasdaq. let's take a look at the numbers. the stock market is not the economy, the economy is not the stock market. broader economy nod doing well at all in a recession but those numbers are undeniable. it would be easy for us to throw up the hands and say that this makes no sense but when you dive into the numbers you do see that some things do make sense. airline stocks are way down and home friendly services, things like amazon and target and lowe's and netflix, those stocks are way up. to that you can add the fed which is making money very easy to get and a lot of it. in fact, working on the way it changes, it deals with inflation to make sure there's lots of cash flow. we get the minutes from the latest fed meeting today.
5:17 am
this afternoon. i know this sounds boring but to economists and investors it's super interesting because it's the fed that is keeping our economic lights on. the senate intelligence committee released its fifth and final volume of the report on the trump campaign and russia. we'll talk more about it with politics but detailed how russia interfered. nbc's andrea mitchell asked facebook's cheryl sandburg about the responsiblies in the face of the disinformation campaign. >> what we missed in 2016 we completely missed it. that's on us. the fbi missed it. homeland security missed it. was a new form of state interference. not hacking in but writing fake stuff to try to influence the electorate. we didn't know what that was in 2016 but now we do. >> you can watch that on msnbc. a reminder that today may be the last day that you can take a uber or a lyft. as of tomorrow the companies say
5:18 am
they may suspend service because of california's a.b. 5. >> oh well. >> that's okay. i'm not going anywhere but staying home and watching netflix these days. listen to this. what do you think about this, guys? why not take a chance and test a new shuffle button? it is located on the profile screen for netflix. click it and then hope it plays something you like. netflix says that the feature takes into account shows you watched before and those saved to the list. it is like when somebody else has the remote control, though, right? >> yeah. >> controls the radio in the car. >> yeah. i don't know how i like that one. >> watch out if the kids are with you and you don't know what will show up so be careful. >> maybe go to the kids profile. >> yeah. >> there you go. >> you know, i wish we could shuffle this forecast we have been having and the temperatures, oh, they have been up there, kari.
5:19 am
>> it comes down but not as much as we'd like but as we look at when's happening across the bay area with the fires burning we have the really intense flames. it was picked up on radar over the santa cruz mountains. we loop it. the past few hours. the ash picked up in the radar and being brought over to the south bay and waking up this morning to a koecoating of cash the cars and in san francisco. we can see the smoke in the air before the sun rises this morning. very unhealthy air quality. make sure you wear a mask all day and starting to feel a little sick you may need it inside the building even at home as we are going to see unhealthy air quality throughout today, numbers that have been really very high as the smoke continues to drift through so that matter in the air combined with the heat will make a lot of people not feel very well looking at the temperatures throughout
5:20 am
today. it is going to be another hot one and the excessive heat warning continues inland. already at noon the low 90s and the south bay and mid-90s east bay going into the middle of the day we'll see the temperatures reaching into the triple digits for spots like antioch and concord and still looking at the very warm weather and not much of a cool down as we go into tonight and expect more smoke today as well as tomorrow and our temperatures that will go from 100 degrees to the low 90s. we do have some more heat in the forecast into next week and san francisco will drop back to the low 70s which will be a relief, at least a very light ocean breeze picking up. heading to you, mike, watching the commute, how's it looking right now? >> the commute itself is fine, kari. the note is because of the fires we have of access cut off. look at green sensors with the speeds all around the bay but notice the bottom left side,
5:21 am
highway 1, not as extensive as it looks on the map but it is an issue because there is limited access there. highway 9 as well because between highway 9 where it says boulder creek and highway 1 is fire in the area. czu fire. the complex that kris sanchez was reporting. no closures for freeways over in mor dan territory and contra costa county but north bay with vacaville is hazard sign. 128, 121. we have that fire going on there. be careful. no problems toward the bay bridge. the toll plaza there is just fine. back to you. >> all right. good to hear something is fine out there. thank you so much. following a lot of breaking news for you. we have a live look from vacaville this morning. some people there injured as thac they have been trying to

5:24 this morning. a live look right here. this is the fire spreading in napa county to vacaville. there's been evacuations. we'll monitor the story in the morning. here's chris chmura with nbc bay area responds. >> good wednesday morning. when steven lamb is a doctor he'll have sympathy for a patient whose bill goes haywire. last year he had to go to the e.r. and when discharged the hospital billed him $550 for a deposit and told him they'd reimburse him when the insurance paid. but after six months of back and forth with the hospital steven still hadn't gotten the deposit back. he told us i aspire to become a compassionate and caring hospitalist physician and i'm disappointed in how the health care system is treating me as a consumer. the hospital took a look and then steven got a check for
5:26 am
$550. if you're canned to pay a depositive it for a procedure, cruise a credit card. make sure you get a printed receipt that states you are due a refund after your insurance pays. keep it and keep tabs. then if the hospital doesn't keep its word you can dispute the charge with your credit card company. that step will probably get the attention of the hospital finance department and hopefully trigger a refund. have a great wednesday. it is official. no sandy tours. out of state visitors without enduring the mandatory 14-day quarantine test. tourists would have been required to show a negative test result. major league baseball is starting to believe the -- like the idea of bubbles, may not be so bad after all. >> not doing trips in the season why not in the most important

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson live in vacaville this morning where homes are destroyed and hundreds vautded and people injured trying to leave the home. >> reporter: exactly. if you're just waking up with us i'm sure you can smell the smoke where you are. we are at cherry glen and pleasant valley intersection here in vacaville. the fire seems to have shifted so we don't have the same vantage point adds we did earlier but in the last hour it was glowinger and you could see the orange and coming in from the city on 80 east you could see that glow from the freeway and also smell that smoke. this morning many folks in the city, i know i did, could smell
5:32 am
the smoke in their own home miles away from where this is burning and folks working to evacuate. we had a photographer here in town for hours just getting those stories of folks wanting to evacuate, loading up their cars. the photographer himself actually was preparing to evacuate but take a listen to what one woman, her experience preparing to leave town and how it got a little dangerous. >> so my husband was driving the car and it burnt -- he got burnt and had to leave the car and it blew up so i was walking down by myself and me and i lost my sho. but i >> reporter: and this morning there were reports of several ambulances called because of people being injured and burned because of this fire. right now these are some of the folks to sit next to, they evacuated their home and they're

in the parking lot and behind that fire still burning but not as bright as it was the last hour because it's burned through some of that hill. those flames still very active here in vacaville. i'm cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> causing destruction in the path. thank you. we have one of our photographers who lives in that area robbie beasom joining us by phone. are you there? >> yes. good morning. >> good morning. you were told to be on stand by. do you have an update? >> not as of now. they just said they recommend everyone be ready to leave at a moment's notice. and it advice. i think there's a handful of people here. >> from where you live can you see the flames in the distance? >> i can't see flames themselves but i see like the orange glow.
5:34 am
chp told us that it's probably three or four blocks from our neighborhood. but it's moving at a southwest direction. >> and so, as you are evacuating, a lot of people -- some people have places to go, family members and things like that but have they told you anyplace to go for safety or do you have a designated that you and your family are going? >> they haven't told us a place to go and very brief driving down the street. we have planned, have a planned spot down the street that's an open parking lot and if that's packed we'll go to another parking lot further down i-80. >> we hear about the evacuations and what does a family go through in the moment having to collect everything in your home that you want to save if that fire potentially comes to your home? >> yeah. it is really surreal walking through your house looking at
5:35 am
what you prepare to take with you. you might not see again. i'm just lucky that i had the time to do it. i know people tonight didn't have that time. >> i know like you were saying a lot of people didn't have that time and you were working overnight and you saw a lot of these flames, some of the homes destroyed by the fire. talk to us about what you saw last night. >> yeah. last night it was pretty crazy out there on pleasant valley road. there was flames. the road, the car. a couple homes went up in flames. it just seemed like the fire moved extremely fast from like 12:00 to where it is now covered a lot of ground. >> we know -- look. robbie beasom, we are having our thoughts and prayers with you and your family and the neighbors out there in that area. >> appreciate it. have a great morning. >> you, too.
5:36 am
boy, it is really tough. the weather's so hot and now these fires and they can even create their own weather systems, as well. >> yeah. we were just talking about how we haven't had much wind but the vegetation is very dry and they can actually form clouds that go up high in the atmosphere. you get tornadoes that develop out of these systems and also the winds that they generate drawing in the energy and so this was a part of that complex that was over parts of napa county, spread over mt. vaca and we have cameras there. so we are watching for the possible conditions as it moves into vacaville that the fire is spreading rapidly. you can see the flames, smell the smoke. be prepared to leave. make sure you grab that emergency kit, the important papers, changes of clothes and
