5:00 am
if you are not paying attention and you're being stubborn and you've gotten an evacuation order to get out, get out now. >> right now at 5:00, tens of thousands of people across the bay area out of their homes for a third night in a row. >> relentless flames continue to scorch thousands of acres, gaining ground in every county. the word of new deaths tied to those fires. it's going to be a long weekend for everyone. "today in the bay" continues right now. and i want to say a good friday morning to you, thanks for starting your morning with us, i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia, hour hearts go out to everyone's lives in upheaval right now. what roads to avoid and the
5:01 am
forecast with kari, another warm one ahead. >> we're starting out with warm temperatures again this morning. this is what we look at for those fire conditions. usually those early morning hours are critical and seeing some of the fire not spreading as rapidly and we're looking at still another morning start where we have temperatures in the upper 60s, not much of a wind, but at times we get these gusts up to about 11 miles per hour. as we talk more about this we'll get a look at how our trends change for today. that's coming -- mike, how's it looking for those routes? >> kari, we actually have a couple of traffic alerts we're watching. on the peninsula, getting more dale around the embarcadero exit. the speeds are okay on the peninsula but the big problem is the active traffic alert in san francisco for northbound 101. from 280 you see more slowing building up. half the freeway is closed right now because of a crash, a pickup truck reportedly hit the
5:02 am
hillside there and brought dirt and debris down on the roadway as well as the vehicle. maybe until 5:30 or 6:00 until that opens. meanwhile the rest of the bay, including the bay bridge is moving very smoothly. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, mike. we've got our team spread out across the bay area to bring you the very latest on all the wildfires. let's start in santa cruz county with a look at the czu complex fires. take a look at these photos showing wednesday night versus last night. the fires really starting to exploding. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live with more on all new evacuations that happened overnight as well. kris? >> reporter: we know that that fire continues to grow unchecked in the nighttime hours, then the daytime really isn't much better. the fire has 0% containment and firefighters are on the line but they are working doubles at this point because no reenforcements are coming in. we do have a critical evacuation to tell you about.
5:03 am
uc santa cruz ordered all of its students off campus and they told them to not expect to return for at least two weeks. the evacuation center for students and staff for ucsc, the coconut grove and the boardwalk in santa cruz. so many people have already lost their homes. the ones you're looking at right here, these are in boulder creek, cal fire's official count is up to 50. however, we're told that we should expect numbers in the hundreds instead. those are just the ones that are counted and confirmed. we were driving around yesterday through the evacuation area and we happened upon some homes burning in bonny doon, not counted at that point. 21,000 homes are under threat as we speak. some of them the homes of our nbc bay area colleagues. yesterday our crews also came upon people who were choosing to stay against cal fire's advice. they don't encourage people to do that. others were loaded up and headed to safety, urging people to
5:04 am
leave and help firefighters do their jobs. >> if you are not paying attention and you're being stubborn and you've gotten an evacuation order to get out, get out now. >> reporter: so with about 50,000 evacuees the county of santa cruz is asking all visitors and tourists who are here right now to pack up and leave so that they can free up those hotel rooms for the evacuees who are going to need them in the coming days. a lot of folks trying to avoid shelters. they're asking visitors to stay away this weekend. we know that there are also officers from other agencies here to help with roadblocks. those are not just for the protection of people who are evacuating and leaving. that's also to protect the homes once people are gone. so that looters or somebody who is just a curious onlooker can't get in. so if you leave be prepared to be gone for a while. and that is so that law enforcement can secure your home and make sure that nobody gets in there. we are expecting a cal fire update at 6:00 this morning.
5:05 am
we'll bring it to you live. in scotts valley, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> good advice to say over the hill. so many people are trying to get out right now. thanks for the latest. 5:05 for you this morning, and as california wildfire fight intensifies so does the war of words surrounding the fires between governor newsom and president trump. we have team coverage for you this morning, "today in the bay" tracie potts is live for us in wilmington, delaware with the spat between the president and newsom, and joe biden's big night. tracie? >> reporter: marcus, good morning from wilmington, good morning, everyone, as they're wrapping it up here we heard about the wildfires and how they're getting political. it came up as part of the dnc last night when governor newsom spoke and pointed fingers at president trump for trying to withhold funds for fighting those wildfires. he initially was not going to appear at the dnc but ended up giving remarks. president trump holding a rally
5:06 am
railing on a number of different things that the democrats were talking about here. but then governor newsom pointed out that the president tried to withhold those funds. here's what the president said and here was governor newsom's response. >> i've been telling them this now for three years. but they don't want to listen. maybe we're just going to have to make them pay for it because they don't listen to us. we say you've got to get rid of the leaves. you've got to get rid of the debris. you've got to get rid of the fallen trees. >> the president of the united states threatened the state of california, 40 million americans, that happen to live here in the state of california, to defund our efforts on wildfire suppression because he said we hadn't raked enough leaves. can't make that up. >> reporter: governor newsom staying in california speaking from a spot a mile away from one of the wildfires. meantime here in wilmington, right in that building behind me we heard from now officially the
5:07 am
presidential nominee for the democrats joe biden. he still needs to talk a lot more about policy details, some of his critics and even some democrats say. but last night was more of an inspirational big picture speech about his vision and about his opponent. >> he's failed to protect america. and my fellow americans that is unforgiveable. as president i'll make you a promise. i'll protect america. every attack, seen and unseen, always, without exception, every time. >> reporter: he also talked about coronavirus, saying he'd support a national mask mandate. we're obviously going to hear a lot more from biden on the campaign trail and of course next week as the republicans get their convention under way, we'll cover that one for you as well. live from wilmington this morning, i'm tracie potts,
5:08 am
"today in the bay." >> thank you very much, tracie, big political year. in the meantime, big fires in the bay area, we're continuing to follow. and the situation is very dire in the north bay as well where the lnu complex fire, it is still burning out of control. last night sadly we learned that three people died in a home in napa county where the hennessy fire burned nearly 200,000 acres. in all, at least four deaths are being blamed on the fires in the north bay so far. the flames overnight actually moved closer to healdsburg. we're going to have a live report from that area coming up. show you new video from overnight this morning. it's also from the north bay, time lapse from the pg&e wildfire camera showing the flames overtaking mount jackson, east of guerneville. you can see what appears to be fire crews working all night long to try to protect that area. >> wow, the intensity there, all right, thanks, laura.
5:09 am
new evacuation orders are in effect in the south bay, this is where the scu complex fire is burning. take a look at this right here. you can see right here, i want to show you the map, this as you can see those evacuation areas, the large part in the red. the people in the yellow areas, they're being told that they need to evacuate if the fire gets too close. this is in gilroy as well as morgan hill. "today in the bay's" bob redell live for us in morgan hill, in the yellow area. have authorities made a call yet? looks like we're having trouble there with his microphone this morning. a number of residents have already been told to get ready to evacuation and the people who live there are keeping an eye on the hills of morgan hill. right now we want to get a look at the forecast for you right now. you can see right here the smoke that is taking over so much of the bay area. step out your house. you can't help but to smell that
5:10 am
smoke. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring the air quality concerns we're seeing across the bay area. and kari, still not looking good out there for us. >> no, but let me show you something that has been a little bit more positive as we look at our weather conditions. near that scu lightning complex fire. so we look at our weather conditions from our center, mount hamilton. we are getting some cooler temperatures up there this morning as well as some higher humidity. that may stop the spread from happening so rapidly. but we're also going to see conditions changing throughout today. as we look at some of the fires burning farther to the north and the north bay, we're slightly cooler but notice how much change from the humidity to the temperatures as we're looking at some higher humidity in some spots. we're still starting out the morning at 70 degrees. the tridrifts of smoke continue. air quality will be unhealthy, right now some of the worst air
5:11 am
quality is in parts of the tri-valley and inland east bay. we'll have more on this and temperatures for the weekend coming up. mike, what's happening out there for the drive? >> well, kari, we now have two traffic alerts going on here, peninsula into san francisco. let's show you the maps so we can zoom in on the first one we're talking about, north 101 as you head toward vermont street and the exit in san francisco. there was a lot of slowing that showed up up to the scene shy of the skyway. it's kind of calmed down, i think some crews went to the area, again, lots of dirt and the crash itself blocking your two right lanes northbound, but two lanes are open. going to take you past 5:30, maybe until 6:00 until that clears. the second traffic incident is northbound 101 approaching the embarcadero exit. the off ramp covered in sand because a vehicle hit the sand barrels there. chp issued a warning for folks on motorcycles, which are popular during the hotter weather. use caution because right now they need a crew there to clean up the sand as well.
5:12 am
north 101, the embarcadero exit and marcus we have the general closures, stay out of the evacuation zones for all of our many fires. >> speaking of those evacuation zones we were talking to bob redell down in morgan hill. i know that's one of the areas they're being told to be on stand by if they need to leave quickly. >> reporter: correct, marcus, a number of people have been warned they might have to be evacuated so be ready to do that. what they're doing right now, they've told us through our cheryl hurd, they're keeping an eye on the hills behind me, the eastern foothills, the scu complex fire comes over the hill and down the slope. they feel their fate is tied to the wind, which way the wind blows, if it's going to push the fire into morgan hill or away from the city, which would be ideal. signs are up around town letting people know that only residents are allowed in certain areas.
5:13 am
as i mentioned evacuation warnings are in effect for a number of homes located close to those foothills. go to our website at nbcbayarea.com to find out if your address is in that warning zone. here's one family who's packed and ready to go. >> the photo albums. jewelry. just anything important. you know, heritage from the grandparents. it's already loaded and we've got the dogs ready. >> we're leaving because we live on top of a hill and i don't want to watch it burn. there's nothing here that is so important that arrive got to stay here. we've got the cool stuff loaded. and, you know, we'll get out of the way. >> reporter: the scu lightning complex fire is actually a series of around 20 fires burning in alameda county, contra costa county, down here in santa clara. it's consumed over 157,000 acres, only 5% contained and threatening around 20,000 structures. quick note about the containment. there are some fires within this
5:14 am
complex that have reached close to full containment but if you look at the big ones, a lot of those are burning out of control and that's why the containment number for the overall complex is so low. again, it's 5%. there's no estimated date on when they'll have full containment. reporting live in more dpgan hi bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. 5:14 right now, thinking of trying to escape the smoke and head to santa cruz? think again. the warning for beach goers and tourists as all these fires are raging on. what the mayor of half moon bay wants you to know. our team is helping you get -- with all this going on and updates on the wildfire, head over to our instagram page to watch, it's 5:14 for you this morning. we'll be right back. experience the ultimate sports hub.

5:17 am
right now at 5:17, let's get a look at our high temperatures for today, we reach into the low to mid-90s for the inland areas, 60s and 70s near the coast. hour by hour in our forecast coming up. and good morning, a very happy friday to you. you may have heard by now that uber and lyft are going to get you where you want to go tonight. they are no longer going to suspend operations after a court in california said they didn't have to reclassify their employees right now. they could continue to appeal.
5:18 am
originally a court had said that had to be today but the appeals court has delayed that deadline. uber and lyft are hoping they can run out the clock on this one, delaying until a november ballot proposition that would get rid of the law. the author of that law, assembly woman lorena gonzales points out uber and lyft have had years to get ready for the change but are now claiming it's all too sudden. the district attorney in san francisco, meanwhile, says don't forget about doordash. he's suing the company to force that change. doordash not commenting on that, but it does say this morning it is adding grocery deliveries to its app which will be very helpful in this time of pandemic. other news, mark zuckerberg is testifying under oath, deposition to the federal trade commission, talking about anti-trust issues. this is definitely a first. and marcus and laura, take a look at this, this is absolutely amazing video of bay area
5:19 am
company called x-wing, the totally autonomous airplane flight in history, no pilot in this grand caravan, all the way from takeoff to landing, which is incredible. it's like a robot car but in the sky. one of the first applications i can think of is let's get those things over the fires with water, you know, maybe not that small of an airplane. >> right. >> we could have that, that would be amazing. >> that would be good there. >> wow, they've been using those big 747s, filling them with water for the big drops. can you imagine? that would be innovative. we need it now. wow, that's amazing. thanks for that, scott. well, of course the fires is what everyone's talking about, it's our big breaking news story this morning, three complex wildfires now burning across the bay area. tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders, most of these fires with zero
5:20 am
containment. one of the biggest is burning in santa cruz county and ahead of the weekend officials are telling visitors you just need to stay away. they don't want you coming to beaches. they've got to keep the roads clear for firefighters and of course all the evacuees. in the meantime half moon bay's mayor as well says hotels there, they're actually filled up we vascul evacuees, people who have nowhere else to go. he's worried the narrow roads you find there, winding through half moon bay, they could become clogged and cause a lot of problems for all the people that need to evacuate those areas. so heed the warning, you know the weather conditions aren't good to be out anyway, everyone should just be staying home, kari. >> absolutely. the air quality has been so bad. when you look at san francisco and what's happening right now with the fog returning and even though we're not seeing smoke drifting in that direction, it's kind of just trapping in the smoke that we do have in the region so it makes the air quality worse over the city.
5:21 am
as we look of the our temperatures hour by hour we're starting out this morning a little bit cooler. we can see the fog near the coast. that will continue at least through noon in spots like half moon bay as you make your way inland for the south bay at lunchtime we're in the lower 80s. as we go into the rest of the day we're going to see the temperatures warming up for the inland east bay with temperatures in the 90s, 91 degrees in danville at 3:00 and 92 in santa rosa. the fog starts the roll back in later on this evening and may be more widespread for tomorrow morning butteer also seeing those temperatures for the inland areas still reaching into the 90s. we're going to have some hot weather and we'll watch for the potential of some higher humidity starting on monday, which may cause some more issues in itself. we'll talk more about that a little bit later. mike, how's it looking right now? people have road closures, heading to work, and people trying to leave their homes as well. >> kari, in general, i mean the evacuation zones, the closures
5:22 am
have been added because of the fire that's spread over here toward the coast, the santa cruz mountains, the scu fire and of course the north bay did actually have a little bit of progress with some of the highways opening. just watch for those local closures and do abide by the request for local authorities. now i've got a couple traffic alerts, north 101 getting into san francisco. the crash at vermont. the slowing has cleared up but the right two lanes still reported blocked there, north 101 approaching the skyway. north 101 in palo alto to embarcadero, the off ramp is blocked by sand after an earlier crash and across the bay this is not a traffic alert but a lot more slowing, south 880, someone hit a pane of glass and it's shattered all across your left lanes approaching 92. we'll be back withth more aftet this b break.
5:23 am
5:24 am
5:25 am
welcome back, 5:25 this morning, want to get back to that breaking news, wildfires are burning right now across the bay area. the czu complex fire burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties and right now more than 48,000 residents have been forced to evacuate. tens of thousands -- acres there, burned and several of those homes have been destroyed. in the north bay the lnu complex fire is 0% contained. at least four people have died there, three in napaed in a home and one in solano fire.
5:26 am
in the south bay, the scu fire is growing, east san jose foothills and east bay as well. this is 5% contained. now to the covid-19 pandemic, we have a look at where we stand county by county. santa clara county has well over 15,000 confirmed cases. alameda, more than 16,000. overall the bay area has close to 75,000 cases and more than a thousand deaths. santa clara county supervisor is faulting south bay medical groups for not performing enough covid-19 tests. he's telling the palo alto weekly the county is far outperforming private health providers on testing rates making controlling the spread more difficult. a county order requires large hospitals to provide tests to anyone at increased risk of exposure but he says they're flouting the rules. hospitals, meanwhile, say their hands are tied by a chronic
5:27 am
shortage of testing supplies. >> you know, poor air quality is having an impact on covid-19 testing in the east bay. alameda county health leaders say a pop-up testing site scheduled for this weekend at eastmont mall in oakland is postponed until further notice. back to our top stories, the wildfires that are on the move across the bay area. >> next here on "today in the bay" our team of reporters with the very latest overnight. >> reporter: we expect an update from cal fire. we know 50 homes are destroyed. that's the official count. we'll tell you how many more are under threat. >> reporter: and i'm cierra johnson in is-- coming up after the break i'll explain where the fire containment stands. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:28 am
5:29 am
5:30 am
everything we've worked for for 70 years could be gone in a matter of hours. thousands rushing out of their homes. >> that's the reality for many up and down the bay area as these wildfires rage on, you can see on this map how many there are, where they are and how they're threatening homes across dozens of communities. "today in the bay" continues our coverage right now.
5:31 am
first want to say good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we know there is a lot on a lot of people's plate right now but of course we want to get you up to date and informed. we're going to do this together getting you started with the day. mike keeping an eye on the commute for us but first we'll start with the forecast, kari hall monitoring that for us today. >> as we take a live look outside in dublin this morning as we get started on this friday we are seeing a lot of people already up and out the door, make sure that as you're driving to work this morning you're turning the air-conditioning on recirculate, the little round symbol you have there to keep from drawing in that unhealthy air quality. temperatures in the low 60s, and heading into the 80s by early in the afternoon, another hot day. we'll talk more about this, our air quality and what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike, how's it looking for the commute? >> well, kari, unfortunately we have two traffic alerts. i've got three crashes, let's get out to the roadways and we'll show you northbound 101,
5:32 am
the embarcadero exit in palo alto is closed right now because of sand across the roadway. chp specifically called out moirks that will have a hard time because a lot of motorcycles are out during the hotter weather. the traffic alert is in place, no openings were scheduled there. we have another maybe 15 to 20 minutes north 101 at vermont, there this also a traffic alert from an earlier crash. the right two lanes are blocked approaching the skyway. the bridge is unaffected. i'm circling hayward, another crash with glass on the roadways. the highways closed in the left corner, more of them because of the fire heading toward the santa cruz coast. other fires back to you. >> big part of our headlines this morning. three major fire zones across the bay area right now. sadly, at least four people have died. tens of thousands of people are out of their homes this morning and the bay area fire storm is a statewide emergency. we've done this all week here on
5:33 am
"today in the bay," our team is spread out across the bay area to bring you the latest on all of those wildfires. starting in santa cruz county where kris sanchez is for us. >> reporter: well, marcus we know the fire continues to grow unchecked. it has 0% containment. firefighters are not in control of any part of the perimeter of this fire. and it just continues to devour the landscape and also now we know it's devouring homes as well. we have a critical evacuation to tell you about, uc santa cruz is now under mandatory evacuation, and anyone living on campus was ordered out and told not to return for at least two weeks. so if you have kids in college at uc santa cruz, they're going to be home for a while. the evacuation center for students and staff is the coconut grove at boardwalk in santa cruz. so many people have already lost their homes. here these are boulder creek, but we found others in bonny doon yesterday.
5:34 am
cal fire's official count is up to 50 but they know the unofficial count is already in the hundreds. almost 21,000 homes are now under threat as we speak, some of them the homes of our nbc bay area colleagues. yesterday our crews came upon people who were choosing to stay, against the advice of cal fire. others packed up and left. >> we live in an extended family so we've got little kids in the house sp everything. we all loaded in trucks and we're out at my brother-in-law's house in santa cruz right now. everybody's on the floor with mattresses and we got what we could. >> reporter: 50,000 evacuees, the county of santa cruz is asking all visitors and tourists in town right now to please leave in order to free up hotel space for people who are out of their homes and they are asking visitors to stay away this weekend. and if you are in the area you will notice roadblocks all around town, that is not only to help the evacuees get out but that's also to prevent people from going into those evacuation areas. even the homeowners themselves
5:35 am
so that firefighters can do their work and also so that law enforcement can make sure that nobody gets into any homes and does anything they're not supposed to. we have a press conference coming up at 6:00 with cal fire. we expect to get an update. hopefully there will be some good news on containment and maybe less acreage as it was cooler overnight. in scotts valley, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. new daylight video i want to show you, the devastation in bonny doon, from a man who drove through the area of his childhood home. much of that area is destroyed by the fire. not much left. he says this is on braymore drive, so many homes in that area reduced to ash and rubble. >> just devastating but even harder is when there's been loss of life. and that is what happened in the north bay where we learned last night new deaths tied to the hennessey fire, hundreds of structures there have been destroyed by the complex of
5:36 am
fires burning there. "today in the bay" cierra johnson live in heel -- healdsburg this morning. one area that's been hit spaeshl hard. >> reporter: there have been fatalities from cal fire, four people were killed because of this fire here in heelsbur -- healdsburg. evacuation notices because of the high winds. if you don't have a plan, best to establish a plan. if you are allowed to stay in your home, do so. it's not too bad where we are but we have video taken by a photographer from a couple hours ago, extreme devastation can be seen throughout the area. right now we're learning that 20 acres here here in so noema county. crews worked to defend nearby
5:37 am
homes from the fire but at some point the winds made it very difficult to do that. take a alone to some folks in the path. >> removed the pots, even ceramics ones, sparks can get underneath and harbor there. pull everything away from the home and then rake all the leaves away. >> reporter: and i've been glued to the healdsburg city website at last check they say this fire is at 0% containment, like many of the other fires in the area. so difficult news to hear that. but as you drive around town you see scenes like this, this house has water, i guess, letting crews know that this would be an area they would be able to receive water from. so folks here just holding tight, hoping this fire is able at some point to be contained. we're live in healdsburg, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. we want to tell you about new evacuation orders in effect in the south bay. this is where the scu complex
5:38 am
fire is burning. want to show you a map that we have for you this morning. it is of the evacuated areas, you can see right here that's the area in the red. you can see this is a large portion of that area, but then you have the yellow. these are the people that are told to get ready if that fire gets close and you need to evacuate, to the north and the south of the evacuate orders. the areas to the south that's morgan hill and it is being told to prepare to leave if those flames get too close. "today in the bay's" bob redell has an update. >> reporter: what people are going to be doing once the sun comes up, something they were doing yesterday as well marcus they'll be keeping an eye on the foothills behind me, the eastern part of morgan hill which you can't see right now but to see if and when the scu lightning complex fire starts to creep over the ridge and come down the slope and into their town. if it does, obviously that's bad news and that's when they might have to evacuate. there are flashing signs up letting people know that only
5:39 am
residents are allowed in certain areas. evacuation warnings are in effect for a number of homes located close to those foothills. go to our website at nbcbayarea.com if you want to find out if your address is in that zone. here's one family, packed up and ready to go if need be. >> the photo albums, jewelry, just anything important, you know, heritage from the grandparents, it's already loaded and we've got the dogs ready. >> we're leaving because we live on top of a hill and i don't want to watch it burn. there's nothing here that is so important i've got to stay here. we've got the cool stuff loaded, and, you know, we'll get out of the way. >> reporter: people wo live here in morgan hill they feel like their fate is tied to the wind and which direction it pushes that fire. they're also concerned about getting horses and other livestock out. this is a very rural area, especially if you get closer to the hills, a lot of livestock out here. the lightning complex fire, which is burning through five counties, including santa clara county right now, i'm looking at
5:40 am
the latest numbers, just over 157,000 acres. those are numbers we got last night. 5% contained. threatening around 20,000 structures. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. i'm tweeting out the evacuation areas right now. in the meantime we're keeping our eye on marin county, firefighters holding the north and southside of the woodward fire, in a remote area of pt. reyes, but the smoke is spreading ind spreading into -- the fire is 0% contained. sadly fire damage at historical south bay park, home to the ancient redwoods when you drive through that area. rangers say there is actually extensive damage there and it happened to a lot of historic buildings such as the visitor center, the amphitheater, just
5:41 am
gorgeous areas to visit. the campgrounds also there have burned. well the smoke from the fires blanketing much of the bay area, we're currently having the worst air quality in the world. can you believe that? this is the reason why. take a look at your screen right there, on your left a view from space and on the right you can see how bad visibility got at times in san jose and san francisco. more unhealthy air could be in store for us five days or more right here in the bay area, kari, and that's something a lot of people have to get used to, at least for now. >> yeah, because we have so many fires burning. i wanted to show you this view we have from the alert wildfire camera from mount jackson west of healdsburg where cierra johnson was reporting on that fire and the evacuation warnings in effect for that area. temperatures are lower than we've seen this morning, favorable for crews out there as well as higher humidity as we
5:42 am

unforgivable. as president i'll make you a promise. i'll protect america. i will defend us from every attack. seen and unseen. >> biden also promised if elected he would work just as hard for those americans who do not support him. next week it's the republicans' turn, getting under way next monday in charlotte, north carolina. while much of it will be virtual as well, 300 plus delegates will gather in person to nominate their presidential nominee. the rnc runs through next thursday. if you have questions about when and how to cast your vote during a pandemic, we've got a plan your vote interactive tool from nbc news. find the link on our home page nbcbayarea.com. the head of the postal service will face some tough questions today about whether he's trying to slow the mail down. >> scott mcgrew, democrats are suspicious of louis dejoy's

plan. >> that's right. and the timing and the optics of his plan are really genuinely terrible. but he does say a lot of what is going on at the post office was pre-planned. it was before the election. and they're going to make some changes. they have nothing to do, he says, with any attempt to sabotage mail-in voting. dejoy will testify in the senate today, then face, no doubt, much tougher questions in the house on monday. he said he suspended plans to take mail sorting machines out of service and remove some mailboxes until after the election. again he's saying much of this was standard rearranging of equipment. but he's the trump appoint yee, and president trump has been saying out loud he thinks problems at the post office would hamper mail-in voting. here he is calling into fox business last week. >> they want $25 billion, billion for the post office. now, they need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of

ballots. in the meantime they aren't getting there. by the way, those are just two items. but if they don't get those two items that means you can't have universal mail-in voting because they're not equipped to have it. >> as laura mentioned the rnc begins next week. while joe biden was accepting his nomination thursday, president trump was in biden's birthplace of scranton, pennsylvania. pennsylvania's going to be a key state in this race. trump questioned biden's keystone state roots. >> he left. he abandoned pennsylvania. he abandoned scranton. he was here for a short period of time and he didn't even know it and today it's amazing, it goes around in a circle. he still doesn't know it. >> now, to be fair, biden left pennsylvania for a pretty good reason. he was 11. and his family moved to delaware. and he went with them. we're watching what's happening in washington on twitter. we're talking about it,

that anytime with the next updates they'll become tropical storms. here you are, laura, we're seeing this, that will be moving off towards the west and then marcus is over here, they're calling it marco but i'm going to call it marcus. this is something we have never seen, probably since 1933 time frame. we have all these meteorologists crunching numbers, when's the last time this happened. two storms in the gulf at the same time. as if our friends from florida to texas don't have enough to worry about. we could see these concurrently in the gulf as we go into the weekend, and early next week. so that's what we'll be watching there, possibly making history there as we look at our weather here in the bay area we're starting out with some fog this morning. it's really nice to see, although it may be trapping in some of that smoke and reducing the air quality in san francisco, we've also seen poor air quality as our temperatures head back to the 90s today in the inland east bay, with livermore reaching 93 degrees and upper 80s in the south bay

as we look at what's happening in the pacific, there's tropical storm genevieve. we're watching this. as it continues to weaken this storm may possibly get drawn into the bay area and bring another round of that tropical humidity, like we had this past weekend, that brought the lightning and the storms. it's moving up towards the north, and will be the possibility of producing more lightning as we head towards sunday and monday. so that's what we're watching here, possibly more history making weather. our temperatures will stay in the 90s as we go into the next several days, once again monday, that humidity may be cranking up. how's it looking right now for those traffic alerts, mike? >> kari, we have one fewer, one less. we crossed one of them off. the one in palo alto disappeared from the embarcadero exit. but we have the one in san francisco, 101 at vermont. there's hydraulic fluid spilled, that's a cleanup that's necessary as well. once they remove the cars.
