4:35 am
foster says they watched from above as the flames below grew day by day. >> it was like a movie. we were watching the fire just roar. you could hear propane tanks blowing up. we weren't sure if there were trees blowing up. it sounded like bombs were going off. i mean, i can't even describe it. it's just -- you're just hearing this massive force over the elements come in and create this devastating sound that sound like warfare and you're watching this orange glow just climb over the mountains. >> eventually foster and her husband were forced to also evacuate their friend's home and now are in south san jose. so far no word on her home's condition, but she says she's not giving up hope. it's a waiting game for thousands of people living in fremont this morning. the scu lightning complex fire is continuing to be destructive
4:36 am
and spreading to people living in the morgan hills area. now officials are telling people living in fremont to have their bags packed and be ready to go. some packing up for the first time in decades. >> i've been in the bay area for 20 years. this is the first time ever having to do something crazy like this. >> well, as of midnight the fire covered over 360,000 acres and is at 15% containment. so we've learned heartbreaking new details about three people who died in the fire up in napa county. last week 70-year-old mary hintemeyer died along with her boyfriend leo mcdermott and her boyfriend's son tom mcdermott. mary's son tells us she escaped to a roadblock but went back to the home to get her boyfriend who was in a whole chair. >> her biggest fear was actually
4:37 am
burning. she didn't want to be cremated. and that's pretty much the way things ended up. >> so sad. their remains were found in a makeshift fire shelter built into the side of the home yards away. more details now, bay area wildfires rage on, evacuation warnings are in place. they could change any minute. fema sharing a public service announcement on how you should prepare in case you are forced to leave. things like listen for local emergency alerts, use those n95 masks, and leave if you're told to do so. one survivor from the campfire last year says it's crucial to have a plan. >> have a five-minute plan, have a two-minute plan, a drawer in the house that's where you keep the most critical thing -- if there's one or two things you need to get out of your house other than your family and your pets, what are two things you

welcome back to you. you're watching "today in the bay." we continue to monitor all of the bay area fires. at this hour the very latest for you. the lnu complex in the north bay has burned more than 350,000 acres. it is now 25% contained. five people have died. more than 30 structures threatened. in the east and south bay the scu fire has burned more than 360,000 acres. it's 15% contained. 20,000 structures are in danger. in santa cruz and san mateo counselees the czu fire burning through the woods at a frightening pace has burned more than 78,000 acres, is only 13% contained. one person has died. 24,000 structures are threatened there. certainly a tough time. >> nice to see at least we're getting something on the containment numbers, finally. not huge but something. >> something indeed. and the thing about it, those fires still burning, the air
4:48 am
quality still unhealthy in a lot of parts of the bay area. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. it's just tough for a lot of people who have breathing and respiratory issues. absolutely. even if you don't have breathing problems, this is going to really start to bother you after several days this prolonged exposure to the smoke we've had. as we look at what's going on right now in san francisco we're starting out with some fog and what we have here actually some favorable weather conditions to keep those fires from spreading so quickly, higher humidity and coastal fog going to work its way in. the remnants of that tropical system that brought in that threat of lightning has now moved off to the north and east. and taking with it those chances of rain and a shift in the wind. even though the wind is light that may shift the direction a bit of where we are seeing those fires developing and growing.
4:49 am
a little bit of a concern there as we see the changes in the wind direction that could also change which direction the fire is moving. as we look at what's going on right now and where we're headed for today we're going to see those temperatures a little bit warmer in some spots, but also cooler for some of the low lying areas in the valleys as we see our temperatures in palo alto today reaching 83 degrees. we'll see a high of 85 in san jose. livermore reaching 90 degrees. we'll still see mid-90s further off to the north. as we go through this forecast no major changes in our weather pattern, which is great news. we need something calm that will help those firefighters get a more predictable pattern in our weather so that they will be able to tackle those fires a little bit better. as we look at our temperatures over the next seven days also holding steady but it does get slightly hotter as we head to the end of the week especially on friday with highs reaching into the mid-90s in the inland
4:50 am
valleys. but for san francisco looks like each morning will see the fog rolling in and temperatures that will reach into the upper 60s even into the weekend. mike, how is it looking for the major commute and the road closures? the major issue is the road closures because the evacuation zones expand the closure after folks are cleared from areas. watch for those areas. we have slowing still on highway 24 getting over to the circled area out of the caldecott that should clear up. it's starting to look better. no problem as far as the fire goes. watching for road closures and evacuations there as well as in the santa cruz mountains, again, highway 17 moves clearly over the summit. back to you. >> thanks, mike.
4:51 am

4:52 am
secretary of state mike pompeo is also expected to address the nation. the speakers last night called democrats radical and pray president trump's pandemic response. >> joe biden and kamala harris want a cultural revolution. >> democrats no longer view the government's job as protecting honest citizens from criminals. >> joe biden is basically the lochness monster of the swamp. >> the focus of the night is expected to be the first lady's speech. her 2016 rnc address received significant criticism for similarities to a previous speech given by former first lady michelle obama. now amid the pandemic across the state many people remain unemployed. still ahead on "today in the bay" this tuesday morning, the major backlog of claims the state is dealing with and the shocking number of calls it is unable to answer. happening now for you, rescuers are still searching for

5:00 am
firefighters hopefully get some containment. more favorable weather, clouds to start out this morning. but then as we go through the day, the smoke is thick or not we may not see much of that sunshine today as temperatures reach into the mid-80s. we will see a few spots reaching into the 90s today so we'll track that as well as our air quality. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commute? even though the live camera didn't show it, the map shows southbound 101 down towards the span for the golden gate bridge slowing. the construction crews scheduled to clear right about now. likely doing so. 24 recovers nicely. the caldecott tunnel was never a problem. the orange signs show the closures. many closures throughout the scu fire, down into san jose, and of course on the left
