convalescent plasma. the criticism is justified. we'll be watching, of course, what's happening today with the republican national convention. we'll be talking about it on the midday news as well and on twitter. you can find me @scottmcgrew. >> sounds good. thanks so much, scott. 5:49. new details. san francisco set to be way ahead of schedule when it comes to closing down the hall of justice. yesterday mayor london breed announced the closures should happen by labor day weekend. critics have called for the jail to close for years because it doesn't meet safety codes. leaders saw their opening last spring when the pandemic forced major inmate reductions. continuing our coronavirus coverage, california now has more than 673,000 confirmed cases. that's nearly 4,500 new cases since sunday. and 105 additional deaths. but, as the numbers increase, the overall infection rate fell over the past week. the governor says

hospitalizations are down 20%. he says he may soon announce plans for businesses to reopen statewide. and speaking of reopenings, on friday certain outdoor activities resume in alameda county. a new health order allows outdoor salons, barber shops, swimming pools and massage parlors to resume business. meanwhile in san francisco a section of hayes street near alamo square will be the latest to close to traffic on weekends. now this is to allow people more room to socially distance and enjoy hayes valley restaurants and bars. those closures begin friday at 4:00 p.m. here's some news niners fans probably didn't want to hear especially those season ticket holders, but they probably knew it a while back. the team now confirming that fans will not be in the stands when the niners kick off their season at levi's. the team cites distancing rules.

they're leaving open the possibility to add fans later this season if the situation improves. some teams do plan to have limited fans in the stands as the season kicks off including the chiefs 15 days from now right here on nbc bay area. laura, guess who is the hottest team in baseball right now -- the san francisco giants! yes, yes. you know it. they proved it again dramatically last night against the rival dodgers. tied at 8-8 in the 11th inning the giants walk it off with a two-run homer after battling back twice to catch the dodgers. the giants won that game, seven in a row. they are on a roll right now. we want to keep it hot, hot, hot. >> wouldn't it be nice to have a hot dog in the stands? >> yeah. okay, now i'm sad again. >> let's keep the positivity going. >> if we were in the stands,

kari, the air quality wouldn't be the best. probably better than some places but not the best certainly. better there than in the inland areas even across the bay in the coliseum, but we are looking at still some unhealthy air quality at times and a slight change in the wind brings in that smoke throughout today and the past few days we've seen that happen. even looking at the headlights in dublin right now it does look a little bit clear compared to yesterday and so that will be the trend as we go into the weekend. as we look at our air quality take a look at your microclimate and how that air quality, the colors change. yellow is moderate air quality. and so we are going to see at times it gets better going into the weekend but it has been improving especially for the bay and coastal areas where we've seen those fresh breezes coming in off the ocean is also helping to clear that stagnant air that we've had. as we look at our temperatures and the way we're trending for today we're starting out this morning mostly upper 50s and low
5:36 am
60s and then as we go into the lunch hour we're going to be in the low 80s for the inland areas. as we head over to the east bay, spots like concord and antioch as well as livermore will be in the upper 80s and maybe briefly touching 90 degrees. we're not seeing the high heat that we had. and also temperatures cool off a little bit more quickly as we go into the evening. once that fog starts to roll back in for the coastline we're going to see those temperatures in san francisco in the low 60s. you go over toward oakland, 65. and then for danville it's about 74 degrees if you're out taking a walk shortly before sunset and more fog building at the coast as we go into tonight. so what's happening here is exactly what we need at this point, just a steady weather pattern. we have meteorologists out there on the front lines with those fire crews and they're giving them updates on the best position to get in based on the winds, the temperatures, and the humidity. and so if it's more predictable in terms of our weather pattern
5:37 am
it helps the crews get in the right position to tackle those fires and get the upper hand. so we're seeing the steady weather pattern continuing. it does get slightly warmer though we're not seeing an increase in winds, a significant increase. we are going to see into the weekend some light westerly winds picking up, and that's all coming in from san francisco and the coastal waters along our bay area beaches. we'll see those temperatures holding steady with highs in th every morning. so improving weather conditions for the next few days. mike, have you seen any improvements on that traffic alert? i have, kari. the good news is that traffic alert has lifted, the last time i'll have to tell you that are to the altamont pass. a big backup, more folks will head over to the tri-valley, though, as we look at the map again, cleared for west 580. the tractor-trailer fire. it did set off a backup for 580 and 205 coming into the area. that's a problem for folks coming in from tracy and more
5:38 am
traffic heading into the dublin interchange. now better news south of there, south 680, that crash has also cleared. will still see slowing down from castle wood down to the sunol boulevard exit. again, all lanes are clear but once that slowing started and you got close to 6:00, it takes longer to clear as the volume builds for that portion of the bay. san jose slowing north 101 up to oakland road. there may be a crash further back at capitol expressway. i'm tracking that. last i heard there was a vehicle in lanes. marcus, better news up in the north bay, the command center. no new fire in vacaville and the backup at the bay bridge holds to the middle lanes. back to you. >> mike, we know a lot of people in the bay area said they just want to get away, maybe go to a beach somewhere. this might make you think twice. take a look at this. incredible video out of southern italy where swimmers and sunbathers weren't expecting this to happen. a tornado hitting the beach. take a look at this video. so you see right here, you can see people sometimes were
5:39 am
running for safety because this was all happening. that tornado actually started as a waterspout over the water and then landed picking up the sand and debris and making for a swirling vortex there. so out of all of that craziness there is some good news. no reports of any injuries. wow. pretty dramatic video there. much more ahead on "today in the bay" this wednesday morning. up next we're going to head out live to scotts valley for the latest update from firefighters on the czu fire burning in santa cruz and san mateo counties. and we've been hearing from evacuees as well wondering when they can return home. hopefully we'll get an update on that for them. stay with us. you're watching "today in the bay." so you're a small business,
5:40 am
5:41 am
or a big one. you were thriving, but then... oh. ah. okay. plan, pivot. how do you bounce back? you don't, you bounce forward, with serious and reliable internet. powered by the largest gig speed network in america. but is it secure? sure it's secure. and even if the power goes down, your connection doesn't. so how do i do this? you don't do this. we do this, together. bounce forward, with comcast business.
5:42 am
breaking news, no sign of letup in wisconsin. escalating violence in the protests over the police shooting of a black man. overnight two people gunned down. next what we're just finding out as this story develops. and back home we are standing by for an update from firefighters in the santa cruz mountains happening any moment now. we're going to bring that to you live plus the latest on the bay area fighters. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. and good wednesday morning to you am i'm marcus washington. i'm laura garcia. we'll get to the morning commute
5:43 am
with mike in just a moment. first we want to talk about the air quality out there, another spare the air alert day today. what are the temperatures going to be like, kari? well, the temperatures are still going to be quite warm as we look at our fire conditions, our weather conditions around all of those fires. and we started out with higher humidity this morning, cooler temperatures all around the bay area which, as we get that update, we're hoping they're getting some more containment and we're not seeing this spread as rapidly. we are still looking at warm weather near the lnu lightning complex as our highs today reach back into the low 90s. our interior valleys and upper elevations will still have some hot weather today. so we're monitoring that.
