now. and a good friday morning to you. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in just a moment. good morning to both of you. let's hear the forecast with kari. good morning. we are in our spare the air alert day. as we get a look live in san jose we are seeing still some smoke drifting by and our temperatures that will start out in the upper 50s but it will be a little bit warmer for this afternoon i'll be tracking that coming up. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? things are moving smoothly for the speed sensors. let's take a look at our maps. the freeways are moving nicely and green. we do have closures, those are the exceptions. the altamont pass where we

typically see slowing is starting to show anything below the speed limit. no problems westbound 37. the golden gate bridge coming up. thank you, mike. 4:31. happening today the east bay is relaxing its shelter at home restrictions. bob redell joins us live in pleasanton. >> reporter: in alameda county as long as those services are performed outdoors both alameda and contra costa county are losing their shelter at home restrictions because of the number of cases are leveling off. starting today personal care services including nails, skin care, barber shops and outdoor pools can start operating outside. wineries with outdoor tasting rooms can reopen but they cannot serve meals. in contra costa county personal care services that do not

involve close contact can open outside, nail salons and nail services. can also take in customers for recreational travel not just for business travel anymore. >> now is not the time to let down our guard. late august shows that the number of people hospitalized is stable and slowly decreasing from more than 100 per day to being in the 90s. >> reporter: now in spite of the loosening of restrictions alameda county is requiring distance learning. contra costa county doesn't address in the new health order. we believe those students in those schools must also still be taught virtually from home. >> bob, thank you.

as many continue to protest the death of jacob blake, many professional athletes are also showing their concern over poli police brutality. cierra johnson is live to explain how some local athletes are expressing their sentiments. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. many professional athletes in an array of sports are doing just that, using their voice to shed light on social injustice including the warriors right here in the bay area. take a look at this video, a new 40-second video released by the warriors on their social media pages features several athletes like steph curry, klay thompson expressing that black lives matter asking for change and they're sending their support to those on the front lines fighting for justice in wisconsin. while that video makes its way around social, some of the players still living in orlando's nba bubble are taking to the streets within the disney resort. the nba is hoping to resume play

today or tomorrow, that coming after several players dressed in black t-shirts reading everybody versus racism made their messages known on thursday. and one former nba player and sacramento native is hoping to take the demands of change a bit further. matt barnes is suggesting a boycott of basketball during the 2021 olympic games would make a bigger impact than simply canceling the nba playoffs. it's not just the nba looking to draw attention to the racial injustice here in the united states. yesterday's game with the a's against the rangers was actually postponed to draw attention to the shooting in wisconsin. the a's took to twitter explaining in part we need to continue to have uncomfortable conversations and work towards a unified front for change. we're live in san francisco. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." thank you, cierra. new overnight sacramento police tweeted out a photo. the department says shows some

damage to the district attorney's office. there was a shattered window. they say someone tried to actually light a fire. protesters also caused other damage all in response to the wisconsin police shooting. police later tweeted that no arrests were made. in the meantime out east the 17-year-old man suspected of opening fire to black lives matter protests will be in court. kyle rittenhouse faces multiple homicide charges after tuesday night's shooting that left two people dead and a third person seriously injured. to the man at the center of the protest in wisconsin and across the country, jacob blake, still recovering in the hospital and his father says the paralyzed blake is also handcuffed to his bed. that's what he's telling the chicago sun times. kenosha authorities are not commenting on the claim but wisconsin's governor was asked about this yesterday and answered that he had no personal understanding as to why it would be necessary calling it counter intuitive. kenosha news, meanwhile,

reporting that blake's father says that charges will be filed against his son. now to the massive wildfires burning here in the bay area, crews are still battling the wildfire battling near the san mateo -- we just checked and the czu complex fire has scorched more than 81,000 acres. it is 24% contained. as evacuation orders are starting to lift some residents are returning home. one case in pescadero getting to go home for the very first time. the tippets family welcomed son jonathon right after they evacuated. >> thursday night after evacuation i went into labor and had him. >> can you imagine that? wow. thankfully their home was left unscathed by the flames. lauren tippets and her husband spent a few days leading up to the evacuation spraying down their property. this fire alone has destroyed nearly 600 structures.

in the meantime in the north bay more families are being allowed back in their homes. this is video shot of a re-entry center in vacaville where families were checking in before going home. the lnu fire is 35% contained. this fire system, along with the scu fires each have now burned about 370,000 acres. the woodward fire near point reyes has burned more than 2,600 acres. more than 1,600 structures are still threatened this morning. the august complex fires, a group of 37 burning in mendocino national fire is now 17% contained. more than 200,000 acres are now scorched there. don't forget a great resource is our website, nbcbayarea.com. you'll find some really helpful maps detailing burn areas and videos from inside the fire zone. deadly hurricane laura

in the upper 50s but then lead into some mid-70s by 11:00 and it will be a warmer day. we'll check out the high temperatures coming up. and, kari, as an accurate meteorologist i will report what the chp says. while the conditions at the golden gate bridge, we take a live look. it might be foggy and it might also be windy. okay, so there you go. the golden gate bridge moves smoothly. we'll talk more coming up. good morning. i'm contessa brewer from cnbc. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open higher as the markets look to build on their record breaking rally. it was a choppy session yesterday with the s&p 500 closingality a record high for a fifth straight day. but the nasdaq ended in the red. the dow briefly wiped out its losses for the year today sitting fractionally below that break even level it looks like it's going to open and be in the green, so we'll be above that level.

investors reacting to a major policy shift by the federal reserve which signaled it won't preemptively hike interest rates to head off rising inflation as it continues to support the economic recovery. today cnbc is focusing on reports on personal income and spending and consumer sentiment. if you like to dance you're going to like this news -- or maybe not. tiktok's parent company has reportedly told engineers to make contingency plans if they have to cease u.s. operations. they have been ordered by president trump to celtsell tik in the united states. but oracle in a joint bid by microsoft and walmart are competing to acquire tiktok which has about 100 million monthly users in the u.s. sources say bytedance could choose a bidder in the coming days. and hyatt is offering a change of scenery. hyatt is offering a new extended

welcome back to you. 4:47 for you this morning. compared to where we were a few days ago we're breathing a little bit easier out there. looking at cameras across the bay area hazy in places. spare the air alert was supposed to expire today has been extended through sunday.

heading outside sometimes it's nice but other it all depends on how strong the winds are and the direction the winds are coming from. we are going to see the type of weather pattern where it pushes that smoke closer to the air. they extended it so we're not emitting more pollutants in the air along with the wildfire smoke. into the weekend we're looking at unhealthy air quality in the north bay and the south bay. elsewhere we're seeing moderate air quality meaning if you have breathing problems it may still bother you. as we go into the weekend and look at the air quality forecast it's still going to be unhealthy in parts of the north bay and santa clara valley. we will see some improvements at bay area beaches. once again our weather pattern will trap some of that smoke in and it could shift and change as we go throughout the day. looking at our temperatures concord at about 82 degrees.

temperatures in san francisco mid-80s. it will be slightly warmer this afternoon compared to yesterday as we'll see our 3:00 temperatures in the low 90s in some spots, up to 92 as well as in antioch and the tri-valley. in the north bay we'll see temperatures coming back to the 70s. santa rosa we're at 73 degrees around sunset and more fog moving in early tomorrow morning. this weather pattern will start to change as we get slightly hotter temperatures in here especially early next week and we're going to see our inland temperatures going up several degrees. so as we look at our seven day forecast in the mid-90s today. low 90s for the weekend, it doesn't cool off too much. then a change in our pattern that will heat up our temperatures into the mid-90s for the inland valleys early next week. san francisco is going to have a slight warm-up going from the 60s all the way up to the 70s. ?

>> about the same, 60s and 70s. 65 is the limit, though, folks. we are looking at the maps. obviously we still have closures around the complex areas. some of the areas are opening so do check with the local authorities and we'll map out where things are not allowed. a fire just off the carquinez bridge. on the hillside by there. if you know where the restaurant is you know the hillsides just off the bridge, no structures as far as i know are involved. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the cleanup continues in parts of texas and louisiana. it is now more than 24 hours since hurricane laura slammed the gulf coast, and we are beginning to get a better idea the magnitude of the deadly category 4 storm and the scope of the devastation. jay gray takes a closer look at the damage in lake charles, one

of the hardest areas hit. >> reporter: at first glance it has the appearance of a child's messy playroom, cars and trucks scattered on their sides. but a closer look and it's clear this mess is no gain. >> this is a disaster area. >> reporter: the devastation from laura stretches for miles. >> this was the most powerful storm to ever make landfall in louisiana. >> reporter: a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 150 miles an hour ripping apart homes and businesses, literally pulling trees from th scattering and twisting lines. most of the area still without electricity. communities and families cut to their core. at least six people killed in the storm, and officials fear that number could grow.
