for us? it's going to be a little bit hotter for today and still some smoke drifting in but a very nice start to our friday morning as we head over to pleasant hill. upper 50s and then atcroclimate coming up. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? kari, overall green sensors for the commute routes. a lot of closures on our map as well. we're looking at the czu and the scu areas. we do have a new stall southbound across the benicia bridge. everything should be fine. i'll follow that. laura, you are following the north bay where we also have closures. cause for celebration for some affected by the czu lightning complex fire. more evacuation orders are being lifted meaning more can return home. what music to their ears. jackie ward is live in scotts valley. but there's still, jackie, a lot

of people in limbo out there right now. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning, laura. 20,000 people are home but that means about 50,000 remain evacuated. we are learning some incredible stories about the people who live around here. get this, one family from pescadero returned home with a new family member. lauren tippets tells us the night she and her family had to evacuate she went into labor and had her son. in the days leading up to her son's delivery she was already hard at work. she shared this photo with us of she and her husband spraying down their property and all their efforts paid off because fortunately their home remained unscathed. it wasn't the typical way of starting life with a t least. >> thursday nab and i had him. we were at the hospital for a few nights and then stayed with my in-laws over the hill. >> reporter: just to add craziness on top of the chaos

for sure. another cause for celebration for bridget after already surviving a fire years ago that burned down her home in the middle of the night, she was really hoping she wouldn't have to go through that heartbreak again. when she returned to her still standing restaurant yesterday she said she was more than relieved. she was downright giddy. who could blame her? yesterday at this time more than 23,000 structures remained threatened by the fire. after lifting some of the evacuations now there are a little more than 13,000 structures that remain threatened. still a high number but 10,000 less than at this time yesterday. cal fire is briefing us once again in just a little under an hour this morning and hopefully there will be more good news for more people to get back home. live in scotts valley, jackie ward, "today in the bay." a lot of people are excited about getting back home. thank you, jackie. to decision 2020 and president trump heading to new hampshire today for his campaign stop on the heels of his speech to close out the republican national convention. he says voters have a choice

between two visions -- his and joe biden's. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live for us in washington with that. tracie? >> reporter: marcus, good morning. good morning, everyone. the president, despite criticism, unabashedly did this speech from the grounds of the white house. he was accused of mixing politics with his job as president, nevertheless the president not only laid out the vision but also used this 1:10 second longest convention speech we've ever seen to really relentlessly go after joe biden. >> this election will decide whether we will defend the american way of life or whether we will allow a radical movement to completely dismantle and destroy it. >> reporter: meantime, kamala harris on the "today" show

talked about what she hopes will be one of her initiatives. she was sort of the democrats' prebuttal to the president's speech and says he hasn't done a good job at all dealing with covid-19. now she is suggesting that the country needs to focus on everyone wearing a mask. >> look, nobody likes to wear a mask. come on. nobody likes to wear a mask. this is a universal feeling, right? so that's not the point. hey, let's enjoy wearing masks. no. the point is this is what we as responsible people who will have our neighbor. >> reporter: harris accusing the president of standing idly by and making a deadly decision not to be more aggressive with his covid-19 response. marcus? >> those masks, a lot of people don't like them, but we must wear them.

election now 67 days away. you may have questions about casting your ballot. an interactive plan your vote tool. you can find that link on our website, nbcbayarea.com. >> happening today, thousands expected to gather at washington, d.c.'s lincoln memorial to march for police brutality. it's called get your knee off our necks march and coincides with the anniversary of the march on washington and the reverend dr. martin luther king jr.'s i have a dream speech. the reverend al sharpton organized today's march along with king's son and benjamin crump. fami police brutality victims including george floyd, breonna taylor and jacob blake will also be in attendance. laura, what's happening now is sparking a lot of conversations and we've been leading a lot of those conversations for the past few months now and we're going to continue that conversation.

our next one next month but all the past ones we've had, you can go to our website, nbcbayarea.com/raceinamerica. there you can find those conversations and start those conversations with your friends and family. laura? well, continuing our coronavirus coverage as well, a quick look at new confirmed bay area cases which now total more than 81,000. more than 1,000 people have died. health leaders have order add central valley foster facility to close. the facility is suffering a massive outbreak. 358 workers have tested positive for the virus. eight have died. that outbreak started back in june. the county says the facility ignored orders to increase testing and boost safety measures. foster farms has not issued a response. california counties may get clarity on how to proceed if they've recently been removed from the state's watch list.

here's an updated map on the counties on and off the list. in recent days napa and santa cruz counties have been removed, they're in limbo on guidance allowing businesses to reopen not to mention schools. the governor is expected to lay out new guidelines during his noon news conference. happening today in san francisco a section of hayes street near alamo square will be the latest to close to traffic on weekends. starting today at 4:00 p.m. this will allow people to have more room to do some social distancing and enjoy hayes valley restaurants and bars. and when they head outside there, kari, how is the weather forecast going to be as well as the air quality? that's been a big issue for a lot of us in the bay area. it has been. some drifts of smoke coming in and i'm already seeing worse air quality this morning. it shows our weather pattern is changing. as we look at some of the numbers now it's a moderate for many of our microclimates now.

better for parts of the north bay. as we go into the afternoon there's a possibility for the north bay and east bay. we'll see some unhealthy air quality as temperatures head into the low to mid-90s. for the south bay we're reaching 86 degrees and still some 60s in san francisco. we'll talk about the weekend forecast as well as the air quality coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? overall, kari, the commute looks great. we take a look at the maps. green sensors all along the edge of the bay which is the perimeter of the bay and across most of your bridges. 680 there's a disabled vehicle mid span heading down out of benicia and into martinez that may slow you down on the span but not enough to cause the sensors an issue. watch that if you are coming in out of the north bay. heading to the city from oakland, the bay bridge toll plaza is cleared as are all the other westbound routes. that is your commute direction. back to you. all right, thanks so much,

right now at 5:13 let's go to concord and check out our temperature trend for the morning. we will start out with upper 50s, a few clouds but then some sunshine today. the issue will be the air quality and slightly warmer temperatures. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. and, kari, we're looking at a smooth drive around the bay, the sensors look great. so does our view of the nimitz through frefremont. there's some smoke in various pockets. no problems for drivers reported

on chp. well, good morning and a very happy friday to you. the latest news of billionaires trying to change the world on this friday morning comes from elon musk who this afternoon will demonstrate something called neurolink. it's a device that musk eventually hopes will be able to read your mind and, yeah, he is very serious about that. the demonstration will be streamed live on the web this afternoon at 3:00 our time. musk promises a working demo. it probably won't read your thoughts but apparently you can use it to control devices, say, for instance, an electric wheelchair. musk has talked about piping music directly into your brain as well. now if i could read your mind, i'm not sure your thoughts would tell me you want toli, but i'm going to do it anyway. yesterday fed chairmanll announ worry less about inflation and

more about job growth. and that is a gross oversimplification but it is friday morning, you're trying to get the kids out the door. we'll go with that one. the fed is less likely to step in with higher interest rates if and when the economy recovers. now wall street loves that. in fact, today we are set to erase all of the losses in 2020 even though there was a pandemic. they're basically saying what pandemic? except, of course, for all that human suffering. futures call for the dow to jump more than 100 points on the open. this despite the fact we learned yesterday a million people had to file for unemployment last week. the second week that number was a million or higher. s&p 500 set a record for the fifth day in a row. i want to quickly mention derajpanday is retiring. he came to america with $28 and turned hundreds upon hundreds of everyday tech workers into

millionaires through his successes. it is a wonderful silicon valley story. and amazon is announcing the amazon halo. it's a bit like fitband, a band that works with an app on your phone. the band has no screen. it's just there to monitor you and it really monitors you, not just your steps or the quality of your sleep. the halo will listen to the tone of your voice during the day to determine whether you are happy. obviously mental health is an incredibly important part of health, but it is a little spooky to think of something on your wrist listening to you all day, hey, you might be prettier if you smile. >> imagine if we wore it, the stories we talk about all day, some are happy, some are sad. >> oh, that's true! >> that is interesting. >> that's a great point. >> alexa is w turning into our therapist. laura, i ordered you some ice cream. it seems like you need it.

>> what? what? thanks, scott. 5:16. united airlines plans to furlough more than 2,800 pilots unless it receives new federal stimulus money to cover the cost during the downturn. united tells pilots it will send notices to them the next few days with the cuts starting in october. united's numbers are higher than those recently announced by delta and american. airlines and other unions are lobbying for another $25 billion in aid. they say would help cover payroll the next six months. trending this morning this weekend is a great time, really anytime, to support black business. independent bookstore day is saturday. o, oprah magazine, shows black owned bookstores. while currently closed due to the pandemic you can support it

it warms my heart to see those two little girls just hugging right there. >> they're adorable. adorable. i miss that age. it goes so fast. >> it does. >> there were only two of them, laura. >> what's the phrase, the days are long but the years are fast. i have to remember that, too. >> true. >> well, today is friday. >> exactly. it's fri-yay. will we have a chance to take the kids outside today, kari? there will be times when we see a little bit of a blue sky, but then you'll look out and it may be that brownish hue we've gotten used to. you need to continue to monitor the air quality. when it clears up, it is safe to go outside, and so we're looking at now that view over the south bay as we look at our air quality. we're going to see still some unhealthy air quality in santa clara valley. what makes the difference is

that slight shift in the wind direction or the wind speed, and so we are going to, unfortunately, see that spare the air alert extended into sunday now. but there will be some spots where we get some clearing especially along the immediate coastline and parts of the inland east bay as well as the south bay. as we go into the forecast, we're going to notice some slightly warmer temperatures today as we reach up to 77 in oakland. 88 in napa today. and for the south bay we'll see high temperatures in san jose reaching 86 degrees with some mid-90s in livermore. as we go through this weather pattern and what's ahead for the next few days, more heat for the valleys as we are going to see this high pressure nudging in just a little bit closer and that will make all the difference as we'll s temperatures. so we're not going to see a break here. highs reaching into the low to mid-90s, even some mid-90s by early next week. temperatures peak on tuesday at

97 degrees in some of our warmest spots inland while the coastal areas go from the mid-60s to the low 70s. only subtle changes there. and, mike, you've been watching the commute. any changes for the morning drive? >> only subtle changes there. i think i heard that from someone very smart a couple seconds ago. over to the roadways though as we reference the speed sensors, we'll call out the bay bridge. no major problems and no slowing on our sensors. it's friday. we see the build there. later, if we see the metering lights on at all, as we drop south, no major issues. there is a build, a subtle change, the altamont pass, a little more slowing as does 84 through livermore and pleasanton. back to you. >> thanks, mike. ahead of our fire coverage as it continues with a shocking look at how many homes across the state are in danger.

welcome back. 5:24 for you this morning. and turning back to our wildfire coverage for you, this is new video showing an up close look at an air drop. since mid-august nearly 1.5 million acres have burned statewide. more than half of that includes the three bay area complex fires. according to a recent study

4.4 million california homes are in what's known as wui area. that's more than 11 million people and more than any other state. >> many of those families returning to their now destroyed homes and soon insurance adjusters will join as well. that's right. consumer investigator chris chmura says don't feel rushed. taking your time might be beneficial. >> reporter: if you're filing an insurance claim after a disaster like this, there is absolutely no rush to take the first offer from the insurance company. they'll send out an adjuster who will assess how much your home and its contents were worth. if you disagree with that number you don't have to accept it. in california you have the option of hiring a public adjuster, someone who can come out to the remains of your home and provide their own assessment of how much your home and its

covid-19 outbreaks despite the university mostly going online. athletes are in isolation after testing positive from off campus activities. new video to show you what's happening when a shark was lurking near a group of off-duty coast guard members swimming in the ocean. so those crews onboard fired into the water to hopefully scare away the sharks. they believe they were about seven feet long and they believe that the shark was not hurt. we do know no swimmers were injured in that situation. scary there. next for you, the top stories including ready to reopen outside. the businesses in two bay area counties that will get to resume limited operations today. plus, amid recent police shootings, protests breaking out overnight in sacramento. we'll have a look at some of the damage to the county buildings. and sports broadcaster kenny

alameda and contra costa counties. in alameda county personal services including nail salons can resume as long as they're operating outside. the same goes for outdoor pools. also in alameda county wineries with outdoor tasting rooms can reopen but they cannot serve meals. in contra costa county personal care services that don't include close contact with a face can reopen outside, places such as nail salons and massage parlors. the same goes for gyms and fitness centers. hotels and airbnbs in coco county can take in customers for recreational travel not just for business travel anymore. >> now is not the time to let down our guard. late august compared to early august shows the number of people hospitalized is stable and slowly decreasing from more than 100 per day to being in the

90s. >> reporter: now in spite of the loosening of restrictions alameda county is still requiring schools to do distance learning. contra costa county doesn't address schools in the new health order. we believe nothing has changed and those students also must be taught virtually from home. reporting live in pleasanton, bob redell, "today in the bay." the cdc is now backing away from that new policy that would cut the number of americans testing positive for covid-19. this did not go over well with doctors. you spoke with dr. deborah birx who leads the coronavirus white house team. that's right. and she was definitely walking that back yesterday saying states should test whoever it is they think is appropriate to test and certainly california we've already said that's going to include asymptomatic patients. i spoke over a video link, of course, and pointed out to her president trump repeatedly threatened to withhold funding

to states he doesn't like or states he doesn't get a lot of support. case in point he said he would forests. he said that last week. i asked her if we in california are getting our fair share of help in the battle against covid-19. >> i can assure you that we have taken a comprehensive public health approach across this country. >> and when it comes to our public needs we are not being treated any differently than any other state because we're california or are a blue state? >> we write very tough recommendations for every state independent of whether they're red or blue, and certainly our recommendations are for republicans, independents and democrats. >> the entire interview runs about seven minutes, too long to run on the morning show as you're trying to get kids out the door. so we'll put it on our social media on twitter and facebook as well. now yesterday i invited you, the

viewer, to send me questions i could then ask her. and, indeed you did. one came from a fifth grade teacher who asked how his students could best prepare to return to class. as a fifth grade teacher what can students do at home to be as prepared as possible for students to return to the classroom? >> i came across -- and that's the great thing about travels -- i came across a lovely booklet that the governor of arkansas had written with his staff on how to prepare children and the deep understanding of covid-19 written for both the parents and the child so they could read this to one another. and it covers all aspects of covid-19. i'd be happy and i'm sure the governor of arkansas would be happy to share that can californians. i think it's a really important booklet. it talks about how to prepare for school and it talks about the importance of a vaccine. >> we've posted that information from arkansas on twitter and

facebook as well. marcus and laura, dr. birx was key -- she's been controversial lately -- but has been key in the fight against hiv and aids, and i told her speaking for californians we thanked her for that because she's been working on that for decades. >> thank you so much, scott. 5:37 for you this morning. and as many continue to protest the shooting of jacob blake in wisconsin and many others across the country, many professional athletes are also showing their concern over police brutality in the form of protests, videos, and moments of silence. cierra has more on how athletes are expressing their sentiments. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. we'll start here locally. golden state warriors based right here, the latest team to express their support for racial injustice. we have that video. a 42-second video was posted to the team's social media pages that features steph curry, klay

thompson expressing black lives matter asking for change and sending their support to those on the front lines fighting for justice in kenosha, wisconsin. while that video makes its way around social media some of the players still living in the nba bubble are taking to the vets in front of their disney resorts. they hope to return to play today or tomorrow after several dressed in black shirts reading everybody versus racism. they made that message known yesterday. and one former nba player, a sacramento native, is hoping to take the demands for change a little further. a now retired matt barnes is suggesting a boycott of basketball during the 2021 season would make a bigger impact than canceling the nba playoffs. a commentator for tnt, kenny smith, a former player, walked off the set, unplugging his mic in solidarity with the players

supporting racial justice. take a listen to what he had to say on the "today" show just a few moments ago. >> we are black americans first. we are sports figures second. so anyone who is part of this, it's not a political group. we all have a voice and sometimes as a unit our voice can be loud. i think it should be paid attention to not about what is missing but why do you feel that way. >> reporter: and it's not just the nba and their commentators. the mlb also looking to make a statement. the game with the a's against the rangers was postponed yesterday while the a's took to twitter explaining that this is a moment to have continued conversation and they work to create a united front against racial injustice. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, cierra. new overnight sacramento police tweeting out a photo. the department says it shows damage to the county's district

attorney's office there. there's a shattered window and they say someone actually started -- tried to start a fire. protesters also caused the police later tweeted that no arrests were made. in the meantime out east the 17-year-old man suspected of opening fire at a black lives matter protest will be in court. kyle rittenhouse faces charges after tuesday night's shooting that left two people dead and a third person seriously injured. now to the man at the center of what started a lot of protests in wisconsin and across the country, jacob blake. he is still recovering in the hospital but his father now says that the paralyzed blake is in handcuffs in bed. that's what he's telling "the chicago sun ries are not commenting on the claim but wisconsin's governor was asked that yesterday about what's going on with that in the handcuffs. he answered by saying he doesn't understand why that would be necessary calling it counter

intuitive. the kenosha news, meanwhile, reporting that according to blake's father charges will be filed against his son. 5:40 right now. the massive firefight this morning back here at home. we just checked the czu fires has scorched more than 81,000 acres. it is 24% contained as evacuation orders continue to lift. some residents are returning home or in one case in pescadero going home for the very first time. one little member of their family. this fire alone has destroyed nearly 600 structures. this is video shot yesterday at a re-entry center in vacaville where families were checking in before they were going home. the lnu fire is now 35% contained. this fire system along with scu fires have each burned 370,000 acres. looks like the weather conditions over the past few days have actually helped out firefighters. it's nice to have a cooler start

to our morning. what are we in store for now, kari? we do have the cooler morning and the fog near the coast which is bringing us humidity. we are still looking at drifts of smoke and a slight change keeping that smoke close to the ground. we're seeing the worst of it right now as we look at our sensors in concord where it's just on that level of being unhealthy to people with breathing problems. we'll monitor the air quality throughout the day and weekend coming up. mike has an update on the morning commute. kari, the south bay we're looking at northbound 101, your usual spot, usual timing is friday. usually shorter lived. we'll watch for that and also a slower drive 121 for westbound highway 37. we'll have more after this break.

right now at 5:44 our microclimate weather alert continues due to the spare the air alert as we check out mountain view, still at times some drifts of smoke coming by with temperatures in the low 60s this morning heading into the mid-70s as we go into the early part of the afternoon. we'll take a look ahead to our weekend forecast as well as air quality coming up in a few minutes. and traffic is slowing for that friday lighter volume of traffic on your commute. we'll take a look at the san mateo bridge where westbound taillights do move. a couple flashing lights, no all right. we like to hear no problems out there. they've had some problems back

in parts of texas and louisiana. as the cleanup continues a little more than 24 hours after hurricane laura hit land in the gulf coast. >> "today in the bay's" jay gray is live for us in lake charles, one of the hardest hit areas with a look at damage and certainly a different view we have of you from yesterday. >> reporter: yeah, what was overwhelming yesterday was the wind and rain. now it's the damage left behind. you can see behind me this is what's left of a gas station here. you see the pumps right here. t. i've never seen that before in a raek. hurricane. we haven't seen where it is. this is the type of scene

unhealthy in parts of the north bay and santa clara valley. it's still going to be smoky in the north bay throughout the weekend but we'll see some improvements in the beaches and some of our coastline as we start to see more of a westerly wind clearing out the air just a bit in some areas. the inland east bay will stay healthy -- unhelp unhealthy for with breathing problems and that as well in the south bay. as we look at that we're looking at temperatures that come up slightly for today. let's take it hour by hour because at noon if you're planning to head outside for lunch, in oakland we're seeing temperatures around 70 degrees and some low 80s for the south bay but there will be a bit of a warm-up. you'll feel that this afternoon in the east bay as well as the north bay as we reach into the 90s today and then it cools down tonight as that fog returns to the coastline once again. our weather pattern getting slightly hotter as high pressure nudges it closer. it fights back that ocean breeze and we are also going to have that smoke capped near the surface as we go into the

weekend and early next week. we talked about containment. that means they're getting a line around the fires but they are still burning and putting more smoke into the atmosphere. as we go through the next seven days temperatures in the upper 90s, peaking on tuesday. san francisco will have a slight increase in temperatures but nothing too drastic here. it's nice we will still have some cool air in the city. mike, you've been watching the commute not just here but all around the bay area. kari, you're talking about the cool air in the city. let's take a look at the bridge into and out of the north side of the city, the golden gate bridge. the fog is starting to clear up but chp warned about that. they also warned about some wind coming across the span. mixed conditions. you can seep the fog moving there. that won't be a problem on our speed sensors as we take a look here, a smooth drive. the arrow shows the bay bridge. the toll plaza metering lights were turned on just a few minutes ago. this is still not even 6:00. that is unusual for a friday but no problem. there will be the build out of
