today. and we do begin our look at the headlines with that shocking overnight news. chadwick boseman passing away at the age of 43, after a four-year private battle with colon cancer. the actor was best known for his role at king tchala in the iconic black banther movie. he also balleted jackie robinson, james brown, and thurgood marshall. the news shocking fans because boseman never publicly discussed his diagnosis and even filmed several movies while undergoing treatment. just remarkable. colleges across the country are still battling the coronavirus this morning as students return to campus. on friday, arizona state university announcing its total cases had tripled in just days with 452 students and 28 staff members all testing positive for the virus. but at least one school is seeing a decline. the university of notre dame will resume in-person cases next week thanks to a decrease in daily cases there.

the school had moved to remote learning for the past two weeks after hundreds of students tested positive. and the tour de france kicks off this morning after a two-month delay due to the pandemic. stage i of the 2,000-mile race kicks off in nice today and is set to end in paris on september 20th. this comes as france faces a new surge in coronavirus cases and has issued mask wearing mandates in cities all across the country. spectators will be limited at the start and along the route, which usually draws hundreds of thousands of people to watch. riders will be tested regularly and any team that has two athletes test positive will be expelled from the race. also this morning, nba playoff games are set to resume later today. days after the league's player's refused to play in protest of the shooting of jacob blake. and this morning, the nba is announcing some major changes to help in the fight for racial equality. nbc's erin mclaughlin is in los angeles with the latest. erin, good morning.

for that conversation, we want to bring in nbc's medical correspondent, our friend, dr. john torres joins us this morning. we appreciate your time this morning. this was such a stunning loss for so many reasons, but it does really raise new attention as it relates to colon cancer here. what are the warning signs that americans and individuals should be looking for as it relates to this awful disease? >> good morning. it's important they look for these warning signs, because the sooner you can treat colon cancer, like most cancers, the more successful it is and the easier it is to treat and the more likely you are to recover from it. here are some of the warning signs we look at when it comes to colon cancer. any kind of change in bowel habit. pleading, rectal bleeding, any blood in your stool. if you have cramping or fatigue or an unexplained weight loss, these are important clues that something could be going on. but one thing to remember, too, these are clues that happen once colon cancer gets to a more advanced stage.

you want to catch it earlier, if possible, and that's possible with screenings. >> there is new guidance from the american cancer society. when should people be getting screened? >> right, the american cancer society just cropped tdropped tr screening down to 45 or above. sooner if you have any of those signs, if you have a family history. the cdc still goes with age 50, but there has been some recommendations to lower that age, because we're seeing an increased rate of colon cancer in young people. even in as young as 20, we're seeing more cases over the last few years. not exactly sure why that's happening, but they want to try to catch those early on with these types of screenings. >> of course, chadwick boseman was just 43 when he passed, had been fighting this privately for about four years now. as we discuss this issue more broadly, does this happen more frequently in certain communities? it seems to happen more often in african-american community, right? >> it does, but overall, colon cancer is the third leading cause of karcancer in adults, t
