us off. brings us our natural air conditioning. by the end of the week the high pressure moves closer and that's going to fight off that natural air conditioning. coming down to the upper 80s, i should say, by the end of the week. mike, what's happening out there with the morning commute right now? well, kari, you showed the orange moon. i have the reddish glow. unfortunately, taillights or brake lights north on the nimitz. now we should start to see these break up north of where you're looking at 66. we do have hope for those sensors to take a look there. i've been scanning around the caltranscameras as well and i did find one that showed some construction to the north around 23rd and it does look like the crew there has cleared. the speeds should increase and they are showing a change from red to orange.

welcome back. many people in lake charles are now deal without electricity or running watt fer they have a home to come back to. the storms left half a million homes without power. 200,000 without running water and has prompted evacuations in hospitals and nursing homes. at least 15 people died in that storm. but survivors, they say they plan to rebuild. >> this is just a house. we'll rebuild. in louisiana we know that this is always a risk. our community is probably the strongest community that there is. and so everyone is helping everyone. >> the category 4 storm estimated to have cause d $20 billion in damage. foster farms plans to shut down its complex.

at least eight workers have died. some 350 more have been infected. the facility will shut down for six days to undergo deep cleaning and additional worker testing. about 2,600 people work there. nbc bay area responds to a fremont family that feared losing a couple hundred dollars in vacation money. >> they asked chris chmura and his team to help get the airline dispute off the ground. >> reporter: good morning. a family had $600 in hawaiian airlines vouchers. a trip to hawaii sounds great right about now, but two problems. first, hawaii still has a 14-day mandatory quarantine for visitors. second, the vouchers expire at the end of the month. she says she asked hawaiian airlines to extend them, but she

"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you. it is monday morning and we'll get you started with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and we have to talk about the air quality, kari. it's been pretty bad. at times we've seen the worst of the air quality in fairfield where it is very unhealthy for all people but elsewhere it is unhealthy if you have breathing problems. we'll be monitoring this as well as hotter temperatures in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute?

>> i also have red. north 880 and the coliseum is jammed up solid from 98 up past high street. the flashing lights, i believe, are indicating crews clearing up to 23rd. it's not scheduled for that side of the freeway but clearly that's causing the delay. back to you. thank you very much, mike. continuing our wildfire coverage it's now been more than two weeks since california's lightning strike fire ignited. at least seven deaths are tied to the fire. nearly 2,500 homes and other structures destroyed. more than half from the three bay area complex fires. the lnu complex fire in the north bay is now nearly 60% contained. thousands of structures are still threatened but none burned over the weekend. good news there. that fire has burned some

375,000 acres. now the scu complex fire is now 55% contained. that fire has burned almost the same amount of acreage with the number of structures destroyed now a little more than 1,000. and the czu complex fire in the santa cruz mountains is now 37% contained. that fire has burned 84,000 acres with close to 1,200 structures destroyed. a really great way to stay informed is through our free nbc bay area app. we've been sending out the latest evacuation updates and weather alerts along with other breaking news stories. 5:33 for you that morning. it is a big day for hundreds of small businesses across the bay area. they're going back indoors.

they're now allowing hair grooming outside. let's head outside to "today in the bay's" cierra johnson. i know you're getting an up close look on how many are making out. >> reporter: the folks here at a salon located in oakland, alameda county, we were talking off camera it's been five and a half months since they've been able to do their passion which is doing hair. they set up tents. i want to talk about how it's been. this is one of the owners. when you were able to open, what was your initial row action? >> when we were initially told we could open we thought we would be inside.

alameda county and san francisco and santa clara county were the only ones that weren't able to do outdoor services. so we had this announcement and opening and had to say, no, we're not going to be doing that. we just started on the days we were allowed to. >> reporter: you have two salons and several employees. talk about the process with both filing unemployment andotional can't help them at this time. >> my husband went through the whole process. >> the loans, all unemployment insurance claims, it was a bummer having to lay everybody off.

"the mercury news" reports even before yesterday had been fined $15,000. those are said to be the largest fines accumulated anywhere in the county which calls the

services a public health threat. in just a few hours state lawmakers will vote on an emergency bill aimed at blocking evictions until january 31st of next year. now the current statewide moratorium ends tomorrow. it will put into place due to the pandemic. we all know about that one. under today's proposal courts could force tenants to pay back rent through august 31st but can't evict them. for rent 25% of that by johnanuary 31st. happening today the post office says it will return mailboxes removed from downtown oakland. six mailboxes were removed due to ongoing protests. they will be returned until

after the presidential election. it is hazy due to wildfires burning. an air alert has been extended through tomorrow. meteorologist kari hall has been following that, tracking what we can expect today. how is it looking for us? we'll have a slight increase in temperatures and also with all of the high pressure we've had pushing that smoke back down into the bay area with the northerly wind that's the reason why it has been extended. temperatures are nice and cool. reach into the low 90s. we'll have more on that air quality coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? a ten-minute delay on b.a.r.t. heading over to antioch. to look at the roadways, a bigger delay.

checking on injuries and we'll see how that builds. north 880 is jammed solid up to high street there's a crash. the california senate will now require the state's top prosecutor to investigate all police shootings that kill an unarmed civilian. the senate passed the bill over the weekend despite opposition from attorney general xavier becerra. he called a previous version of the bill untenable and unreasonable because it would cost his office up to $80 million a year. the bill now heads to the final vote in the senate assembly before it would go to the governor's desk. decision 2020 and joe biden again condemning violence on the streets of america. but he's also calling for some new national policing standards. here is his vp nominee, senator kamala harris. >> when joe biden talks about reforming policing in this

patriots. president trump will travel to the other trouble spot, kenosha, wisconsin, on tuesday. a police officer shot jacob blake seven times in the back. the mayor and the state governor asking the president to stay away. the governor writing in a letter to the white house i am concerned your presence will only hinder our healing. i'm concerned your presence will only delay our work to overcomedy vision. there was a week ago president trump announced the fda would allow the emergency use of convalescent plasma in coronavirus cases. the head of the fda later apologized for some of his own claims. it is effective and has been used for decades in patients with infections. it's still early days but here is the american death toll in the week since the president's

their hair and the way it grows is just great. you can watch that. i'm at kari hall weather on instagram, facebook as well as twitter. now let's get to our forecast for today because we move on with this business. it will be heating up once again. a look at our air quality because that's been the main issue for us. at times it's been so smoky you don't even want to go outside so that unhealthy air quality will continue today. unfortunately as we get the northerly wind and that high pressure pushing that smoke down to the surface we're going to see that trapped in the bay area 83 degrees in napa and in san francisco we're in the upper 60s. we'll see temperatures heat up

as the high pressure builds and moves in and will be hot for the weekend. we're starting out hotter for the start of this week as well. some of our warmest spots, low 90s today and more of the same. a slight cooldown by the end of the week with upper 80s. check out the weekend forecast. it's going to get hot once again. hopefully over the next few days. we do continue to see progress with the containment as those fires continue across the bay area. as we look at san francisco this is where we have the morning start with fog each day. we are going to see temperatures slightly warmer in time for the week. mike, you've been keeping an eye on several issues popping up for the morning commute. we don't love this but it happens, the metering lights. they were turned on just after 5:30. notice the middle lanes are now

thousands of demonstrators taking to the streets of mexico city calling on president obrador to resign. protesters say he is unfit for the job citing the struggling economy and lack of action on stopping the spread of covid-19. obrador says the protests are elitist. fewer people are going to the doctor because of the pandemic, and that is leading to a drop in immunization rates and new worries about additional outbreaks. the california department of health says the number of vaccinations in april dropped more than 40% compared to one year ago. and that's despite state law requiring students to be immunized against diseases including measles, mumps. new for you this morning a ripple effect from california's stay-at-home order.
