"today in the bay" starts right now. and very good tuesday, goodness gracious, it's already thursday. only go back to see how far you've come. good thursday morning to you, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm in for marcus washington on this thursday morning. nice to see all four of you, kari. i know you have a forecast that looks gorgeous for the weekend. >> yeah and hot, too. we've been talking about how this weekend we're going to be heating up. excessive heat warnings will go into effect this saturday. so what we'll want to do is enjoy today because it's still going to be really nice as we ith temperatures in the upper 50s. as we go toward our lunch hour, take it outside. we'll be mostly in the mid 70s for many of our spots in the inland valleys. and then as we go into the afternoon, or this afternoon we'll see those temperatures in

the low to mid 80s. we'll talk more about this and that high heat ahead, that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commute? >> kari, we have a couple concerns. first a look at the san mateo bridge camera we have facing west. the taillights away from us going towards the peninsula and that's where the reports of a disabled vehicle somewhere along this flat section. about five minutes ago i saw flashing lights on the right side and i don't see them now. no slowing across mid span and the report is there from chp. oakland slowing now suddenly southbound and there is a crash and big rig and two sedans specifically blocking your slow lane through downtown and check on 16th coming up in the next few minutes. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. now to one of the most talked about stories of week. we continue to follow new developments in the illegal hair salon visit in san francisco by house speaker nancy pelosi, which the house speaker is

claiming was a set up. this morning we're hearing from the stylist and the owner of the salon. pete joins us live this morning. pete? >> the stylist agreed with house speaker pelosi that this was a set up, but the owner is, of course, disputing this set-up claim. she discussed that in an interview with tucker carlson on fox news that we'll get to in just a moment. here's video that everybody is talking about. this visit by house speaker pelosi to this salon. the house speaker receiving backlash for that hair appoi appointment and also wearing the face mask around her neck. now, jonathan dinardo is the stylist seen in that video and his attorney claims this was all a set up. statement with the statement with the attorney the owner of the salon has been illegally or claims that she has been illegally styling clients for months and also adding the owner gave denardo her approval for

said she is probably done at the location behind me due to what she calls backlash from the incident. reporting live, pete suratus for "today in the bay." >> certainly one everyone is talking about. thanks so much, pete. take a look at this this morning. bay area just saw the highest amount of covid-19 deaths in one day. there were 30 reported yesterday. the most recorded in a single day since the start of the pandemic. in the meantime, 87,000 covid-19 cases in the bay area. more than 1,000 people have died since the start. statewide, nearly 800,000 cases with more than 13,000 deaths. so, where do we stand? we want to look at the reopening tiers and where each bay area county currently stands. if you take a look at the nap, napa, san francisco are in the different colors and below that widespread risk. that purple color indicates widespread risk. now, "the chronicle" looked at

recent data and it appears santa clara and marin may shift from the purple tier and those tiers are updated once a week on tuesday. new advice from santa clara county this morning to businesses. if your customers don't follow health guidelines, lawyer up. santa clara health leaders say instead of appealing to them, businesses should seek legal counsel if people are refusing to wear masks or not social distancing. the counsel will help tell each business how they should respond. if businesses need legal help, they can call the county's business call center to point them in the right direction. churchgoers continue to gather at a south bay church despite health orders not to. the north valley baptist church in santa clara is racking up some pretty hefty fines. so far more than $50,000 in fines for holding indoor services. that includes a fine last night after about 150 people attended. this week the pastor posted videos saying there is not a

spike in cases locally and he is following the protocols. santa clara county think ay se differently. >> very sad we find ourselves in this condition that the county is basically shutting down a church. >> concerning examples of folks not following the public health directives and, as a result, putting not only their own congregations but, in fact, all of us at risk. >> the county said the church is one of only two buildings that continue to defy the health o order. the oakland a's are back home waiting to be cleared to finally return to the diamond. this is after someone in their organization tested positive for covid-19 over the weekend. no players have tested positive. the goal is to return to playing on friday. north beach first fridays are back this weekend. of course, we'll see covid-19 safety precautions if you go. handing out masks and hand sanitizer while restaurants are

it is 4:46 right now. we're looking out our window over oakland this morning. things will be smoothly on the roadways. seeing mercury moving along in the thermometer, as well. not like it is going to move like when we get to the weekend, kari. you're talking about quite the heat up by sunday. >> i'm so not looking forward to that. i know. we're going to have some really hot temperatures, once again, as if we haven't had enough of that this summer. all right, so, let's start out this morning while it's still nice and cool. we are seeing some clouds moving in this morning. and we'll see the clouds gradually clearing out today. we also had some improvements in our air quality, as well. we'll continue to monitor that as our spare the air alert continues. we'll see those temperatures in the south bay reaching into the upper 70s and some mid 80s for the south county.

as we move over towards the east bay, we're up to 87 today in pittsburg while oakland will only reach 70 degrees and then we go towards the coast line with palo alto reaching 76 degrees and for san francisco, it's mostly in the mid to upper 60s today. north bay high temperatures, nice and comfortable in santa rosa reaching 77 and still going to be hot in ukiah as we reach into the upper 90s there. let's head to the weekend. as we talk about where we will be compared to our record high temperatures. and we're looking at for spots like napa, we're going to be normally reaching 84 degrees, but the forecast is for 98 degrees. that is 14 degrees above normal and it's going to be even higher for concord above normal as we reach up to 19 degrees above where we should be for this time of year. so, here's what we're expecting. we are going to see those temperatures going up much hotter weekend and mostly temperatures over 100 degrees

for the inland valleys with some 70s and 80s for the bay and the coast. now, our winds will pick up heading into early next week and that will increase our fire danger. and we're looking ahead to monday night into tuesday saying could there be the potential of power outages. that's something we'll have to watch as the winds increase and we'll have hot temperatures but we are going to have, once again, a very hot weekend for the interior valleys. mike, what's going on for the morning commute? >> well, kari, we have a lot of activity over in the east bay. similar area. first, we'll talk about the quadrant showing the bay bridge and the approach through contra costa county. everything looks pretty good. circled a connector on to west 80, that is the bay bridge toll plaza approach. that connector has road crews that should be clearing any minute there. then we'll zoom in to the big red section with this slowing sensors down through oakland, the southbound 880 at 16th.

this crash blocking your slow lane and tow trucks still waiting for two of those here. big rig and two sedans and this fire just north of the bridge eastbound 80 to gilman off ramp is closed by a roadside fire. we know usually a homeless encampment there and some sort of fire that sparked up there. sounds bigger than what is usual. we'll track that, guys. back to you. new this morning, organizers of san francisco's pride parade will prohibit uniform police officers from marking next year's event. the board said this is in response to a clash between demonstrators and officers last year. several efforts the police have made to make changes within their department. police chief bill scott said in a statement in part that he was, quote, disappointed in the pride board's decision. growing signs of fraud and abuse are prompting an investigation into the state's employee development department. this likely will lead to a big emergency audit.

about 40 state lawmakers yesterday called for that audit. it comes amid signs social security numbers are being used without people's consent as hundreds of thousands of people still await their first delivery of jobless payments and also signs of people across the country receiving random letters with other people's personal information. it hopes it will more quickly clear up the mystery. the session is over for the state legislature but governor newsom says more. bill for pandemic relief and police funding. governor newsom is open to have lawmakers come back in the fall for a special session to discuss those bills. another cal state school halting in-person classes in the wake of a covid-19 outbreak. all classes at san diego state will be online only for the next month. after dozens of students became infected. only a few classes are being held in person, including labs.

francisco's 49ers team will and won't be doing when the season gets under way. and happening now as fire crews get a better handle on wildfires here in california, washington state is now dealing with a growing wildfire. thousands of people are now under evacuation order as the evans canyon fire grows in size. it burned more than 30,000 acres in yacama county. the cause of the fire is now under investigation. we'll be right back.

incentives for renters. a survey of apartments on zillow show 41% of rentals in san francisco had discounts. that's up from 16% in february. while in san jose, 40% of rentals offering some sort of concession. re aa is down about 1%, but that's compared to an average rent increase of 2% the previous five years. the nfl season kicks off 49ers cheerleaders will be among those following different game plans like most everything. this will be a season like no other for the gold rush.
