first let's check in with mike. vianey, we have our typical construction through oakland. as we look at your map and also the transition to the bay bridge. that's expected heading through the area. as you travel to the off ramp may be affected by a crash. back to you. to that extreme heat and power problems coming down the pike this holiday weekend. "today in the bay's" roz plater, a potentially dangerous combination of reasons why we might lose our power this weekend. >> reporter: yeah, there are indeed. they are already issuing and telling us ahead of time there will be a flex alert starting tomorrow afternoon and going all the way through the labor day weekend. unless there is a problem with some equipment, they do not anticipate having those rolling outages. that is the good news.

this labor day weekend is going to be a scorcher are temperatures anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees higher than they normally would be this time of year. they're asking everyone to pitch in and help with power. firefighters run the risk of fatigue and dehydration. >> we still have some active fire we're patrolling so with the increasing heat, decrease in humidity, those fires can get bigger. we're going to be actively patrolling that. >> reporter: here are some reminders how you can help out. set your ac thermostat to 78 degrees. avoiding any unnecessary lights or electrical devices. close your blinds and drapes. use a fan when possible and

postpone using your major appliances until after or off peak hours. the hours they do not want you to use excess power from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. that begins tomorrow afternoon and goes all the way through monday afternoon or monday evening. >> we also have breaking news on the covid-19 vaccine front. the world health organization does not expect widespread vaccination until the middle of next year. the w.h.o. says none of the candidate vaccines show a clear signal of ef kaes of at least 50% adding that phase three testing is chtaking longer. this happening despite u.s. health officials saying a vaccine could be ready for distribution as soon as late october. people are trying to get

the market, that sector suffered its worst day since march as investors sold off shares of companies that have been awaiting wall street's comeback the past six months. apple contributed the biggest chunk of those losses down 8%. the company lost $180 billion in market value. the largest one-day loss for any company ever. today we're focusing on the monthly jobs report. we get that before the opening bell while the economy likely added 1.3 million in august. companies may be hiring at a slower pace than earlier this summer. and lots of americans plan to get in some work over the labor day weekend, and i don't mean power washing the deck. a survey by home to go finds nearly 75% of adults say they'll do at least some office work while traveling. and workers are looking to go remote for searches for rural destinations. 91% last year. those destinations include the

it is going to be warm and this time around it will be dangerous heat which is above the 100 mark and that's something we have to look out for very closely. right now we do have a little bit of low cloud coverage into the coastline of san francisco. you can see this live look right here. we have some of that fog. you can see the city behind it. not as dense. that high pressure is already sitting over the bay area. that will make that fog making way for plenty of sunshine but also the heat. san jose right now a great start there. a nice view overall. our current temperatures probably the coolest at this point of the day and probably of the weekend. right now we're in the 50s and 60s in san jose. air quality will remain unhealthy for most of the bay area for the next 24 hours. we remain under a spare the air alert that was extended all the way through tomorrow because of the smoky conditions, so expect to see hazy skies. notice from the north bay at

build northbound 880 with those taillights heading up past high street and then as you get up to 23rd, 29th, you're down to one lane. you're losing one lane even as we show this camera shot. it should be picked up in the next few minutes. that's the good news. up to the bay bridge we still have the connector on to westbound 80. that may be closed for another hour, likely cleared within the next 15 minutes as well. schedule time for the maze and folks around richmond and the rest of the bay looks great. back to you. all right. let's hope it stays that way, thanks, mike. activists are sending a pretty clear message to san francisco police. protesters painted the words defund sfpd in yellow last night judd t outside the police station in the mission. they protested peacefully. the group called defund sfpd says members want city leaders to reduce the department's

budget and change policy. >> we're taking to the streets to honor black lives victims and survivors of police violence across the country and in san francisco. >> officers in riot gear were on standby during the demonstration but things remain peaceful. the city of san jose will not be pursuing charges against those arrested for breaking curfew during the summer protest following the death of george floyd. the city then enacted an 8:30 p.m. curfew. over the course of four nights officers arrested dozens of protesters for violating it. the acting city attorney said a court case regarding a curfew ordered during the rodney king riots in los angeles put the legality of the arrest made for san jose curfew violation question. a they can to lock down the three bay area wildfires. the latest containment for the fires, the lnu fire is now at 81% with full containment

expected next week. similar numbers for the scu complex fear. marin, the woodward fire is 71% contained. some evacuees may not realize they may be eligible for assistance from fema to cover emergency costs like evacuating, hotel and food. they are trying to get the word out for those who may be struggling because of the pandemic. the north bay deadline to apply is tomorrow. that deadline is not connected to property damage reimbursement either. smoke from those fires is still lingering in the bay area. as we look out our windows over walnut creek and san jose, today marks 18 straight days of spare the air alerts, the longest stretch we've ever had. this will be in effect until at least tomorrow. a great superhero once said why do we fall? well, to pick ourselves back up again. production on
