"today" contributor elizabeth hikel joins us from her kitchen. i'd love to be there good morning how are you? >> hi. how are y'all? >> we're good. state fair, some of the best memories of my life. the kansas state fair. >> have you ever -- going down that midway and you have all those incredible trailers with all that fried food, honey if it ain't fried, we don't want it when we're at the state fair. that's what we're going to start with today these are fried apple pie corn dogs they could not be simpler. all you do, you literally take an apple pie that's frozen, premade. pick that up get all of the outside crust off of it. you don't want that. now we just have this frozen center we're going to wrap it in a

pastry dough and you can buy that at the grocery store as well. it comes in like one of those roles. and then we're just going to kind of fashion this it's supposed to look like a corn dog so you want to kind of go ahead and cut it, mold it. and then we're going in that oil. so the good news is when you're frying, you want it to be about 350 degrees. take a little piece of dough to test it. put it in. if it starts to bubble and sizzle, you know it's right where it needs to be >> wow >> so here's one i did a little bit earlier. so now we've got it in there it's been fried. we're going to take one of these skewers which i've hidden from myself there we go. we're going to stick that in the bottom of this a little bit of powdered sugar you could do caramel sauce on top of this. unbelievable and then look. i'm going to cut this so you can see. >> come on >> hello have you ever in your life i mean, that is the easiest thing in the world now, we could not have a fair

without a blueberry pie. i mean, the pie contest is, you know, so iconic. this one has balsamic. in here a little bit of corn starch and we've beaten up a few of these blueberries with this wooden spoon now we're going to add our cinnamon we're adding some sugar. just a little. we add vanilla we also have some honey which is going to be incredible so we've got that sort of acidic balsamic, and salt then i'm adding a bit of black pepper >> oh. >> yes it will be that thing you go, , honey mixture to it. wait what is that like, what is that you won't be able to put your finger on it, but you will certainly know it's there.

here are the rest of our blueberries. we're going to add that wonderful corn starch, balsamic, honey mixture to it. then we'll mix it up just a bit. and then this is going to go right into our dough now, the recipe which you'll see at today.com, it's simple. we used a food processer so you put all of your ingredients in it, whiz it around once it forms a ball, you know, you just put it in the fridge and sit for a bit. then we're going to roll it out. look there can y'all see that look at those blueberries. and this is the season this is the end of the fruit season you know we're going to be working into fall apples and all of that thing so let's go ahead and really get into it with our berries >> oh, my goodness >> because they won't be here long >> elizabeth, what does your house smell like right now >> oh, honey it smells like four dogs no, i'm kidding. it smells -- you want the honest answer no it smells absolutely incredible. i'm telling you. there's nothing like this.
